WHY HAVE I CHOSEN JAKE NAVA?Jake Nava directed Beyoncé's ‘Single Ladies’, one of the most influential songs I believe in the music industry. Her and Nava’s ideas of keeping it simple created a massive impact on the great choreography. As the video was focused on her dancing, when the song is played most people’s reactions or dance moves will reflect those in the video. This dance is now iconic to Beyoncé.

Nava said that on the day the video was shot, the song was divided into three parts. He deliberately used lengthy shots so that viewers "would connect with the human endeavor of Beyoncé's awe-inspiring dance".

Beyonce’s video was inspired by a routine by a woman and two other women on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ called Mexican breakfast.

NAVA’S BIO

Jake Nava is an English born music and film director. He was born in Hackney, London and attended the University of Westminster. As well as being a music director he has filmed commercials for companies such as HSBC, Clinique, L’Oreal, Rimmel and more. He has worked with many artists in these commercials such as Beyoncé.

NAVA’S SIGNATURE STYLE

One style I have noticed of Nava is that he makes his videos very dark. It’s as if he wants to give this seductive feel to add to the sex appeal of the artists. The darkness also amplifies the artists lyrics which links into the mood of the videos. Mark Morrison’s ‘Return of the Mack’ is a good example and well as Mis-teeq’s ‘Scandalous’. He uses a very dark and seductive settings with just spot lights focused on the artists.

NAVA’S WOMEN

From researching Jake Nava I have noticed that he has worked mostly with women and only a few men. I think this is because Nava can film these women in a beautiful light but in a dangerous one at that. His close ups of the women highlights how famous and important they are in the industry such as Beyonce, Shakira and Britney Spears.

NAVA’S GENRE

Nava’s music videos range in genres. He works with rock to pop to hip hop to soul. His videos are mainly around women’s pop and r’n’b but it looks as if he likes to experiment and is very good at directing all sorts of genres.

MY FAVOURITE WORK OF NAVA’S

Researching Nava has been fascinating. As Beyonce is my favourite artist of all time, it was probably because of the great videos. I love “Naughty Girl” the settings are amazing and the way it is shot is brilliant. The great and iconic video “Milkshake” by Kelis is also one of my favourite works of his. He made it so well to give such a good double meaning which makes the song even better than it is.
