A year of Séamus Ennis Centenary Celebrations, will be launched by it’s curator, Ronan Browne along with special guests.

Born 100 years ago, Séamus Ennis transformed the lives of those lucky enough to have known him. A world-class musician, singer, raconteur, mimic andlinguist, he was unique as a folklore collector in that theculture-bearers he visited felt as honoured as himself.

In a society rapidly becoming culturally indifferent, where the collection of surviving folklore was ofparamount importance, the 23-year-old Séamusembarked on his first field trip for the FolkloreCommission with little more than pen, paper, tin-whistle and bicycle. He continued to collect (andbroadcast) songs and music from Ireland, England,Scotland, Wales and Cornwall, firstly for the FolkloreCommission (1942-47), then Raidió Éireann (1947-51),the BBC (1951-58) and finally intermittently as apresenter on the newly-founded Teilifís Éireann. Séamuscontinued to perform in public up to his death in 1982.

“Séamus Ennis is my mentor. He made me realise musicis magic and a spiritual experience. It cannot be taughtin any university. It is beyond that.” Tony MacMahon

Our 1st centenary performance is a warm and relaxedevening of song, music & chat with Brian Mullen,Ronan Browne & Jimmy O’Brien Moran.

Brian MullenDerry singer, broadcaster and expert on Irish song,Brian’s life-long interest in traditional songs has seenhim collect a varying repertoire from great singers likeEddie Butcher, Joe Holmes, Geordie Hanna, Seósamh Ó hÉanaigh and many more.

Ronan BrowneDubliner Ronan took up piping in 1972, eagerly soakingup music of the old masters of Irish music. He nowstraddles that difficult divide between pure traditionalmusic and the modern world, in his solo playing and celebrated duet with Peter O’Loughlin, withpowerhouse trio CRAN, making soundtracks for film & television and as original piper with the Afro CeltSound System and Riverdance.

Jimmy O’Brien MoranAn engaging performer with a great sense of humour,Waterford piper Jimmy fell in love with the pipes in theearly 1970s. His great influences were Willie Clancy andSéamus Ennis, whose recordings he hungrily consumed.Jimmy’s recording career began with the classic 1978album of young pipers, “The Pipers’ Rock”; a stint withSonny Condel and Scullion followed as well as anencounter with the saxophone!

Music and Madness Ronan Browne in Conversation with Ivor Browne.

Ivor BrowneBorn in 1929 (when Séamus Ennis was a mere tenyears old) Ivor Browne has achieved more for thehealth and contentment of Ireland than others canimagine. A wild, barefoot, Jazz-trumpet-playingurchin, Ivor stumbled into medicine and psychiatry, from where he transformed Ireland’s mental healthsystem with his characteristic open-heartedinnocence and ‘can-do’ attitude. Throughout thisamazing career, Ivor held a deep love for all forms ofmusic but especially Irish music and Jazz. A closefriend of Leo Rowsome, Willie Clancy, Tommy Reck,Denis Murphy & Tommie Potts, Ivor was particularlyclose to Séamus Ennis.

Ronan BrowneA serial musical collaborator, living in Conamara,Ronan has travelled the world sharing Irish music inhis own open-hearted way. When Ronan metSéamus Ennis in the mid 1970s, he was immediatelytaken under Séamus’ musical wing and eagerly methim on every occasion possible.

Ardal O’Hanlon warms up for his 2019 Ireland andUK tour, ‘The Showing Off Must Go On’. Where hecomes from - the border - there’s nothing worse thanshowing off. So why does he persist, apart from notgetting enough attention as a child? Well, just whenhe thought he’d made sense of the world, when hewas about to stop airing his dirty linen in public, theworld went and shifted off its axis. And clearly needssaving. In an age of raging populism, MeToo, the endof truth, peak avocado, and terrified of being on thewrong side of history, Ardal is forced to saddle hishigh horse again and ride fearlessly into the wars(with a white hankie in his pocket just in case),comedy as ever being the best emergency responsemechanism to extreme events there is. See the star ofFr Ted and Death in Paradise do what he does best.

Jim Page was born in California in 1949 and grew up inthe 1960’s in the San Francisco Bay Area. Politics and social awareness were a part of everything that wasgoing on and it has stayed that way in Jim’s music eversince. Jim got his start in the bars and coffee houses ofthe lower Bay Area in 1966. On New Year’s Day of 1970he headed to New York City by thumb, arriving onefrozen day in January with a broken fleece lined jackedand 34 cents in his pocket. He soon borrowed a guitarand started hitting the clubs of Greenwich Village, sometimes playing as many as three in the same night. It was in Ireland that Christy Moore first heard Jim’s song“Hiroshima Nagasaki Russian Roulette,” and made it apermanent part of his repertoire. Jim continues to writeand to perform and to experiment with form andensemble, and his songs continue to be pertinent andexpressive of our times. To quote the late Utah Phillips: “If you’re ever going to get the message, this is themessenger to get it from.”

Thirty-one years ago, a small group of Irish musicians made their way to Estonia to take part in one of the most extraordinary, not to mention one of the first, albeit unofficial recognitions of Estonia as a (potentially)independent nation.

Join us at the SEAC as some of the Irish Artists reunite with their Estonian counterparts for a celebration of thisunique musical collaboration.

Jaak Johanson has been the leader of the folk movement inTallinn, Estonia for years. Krista Citra Joonas is a saxophonistand flute player, who added to her skills in India andSwitzerland playing the Indian bamboo-flute. FeaturingJaak (guitar, vocals), Kärt (vocals), Mart (guitar, vocals), Ants(bouzouki, vocals);

The Johansons' music, but even more their way of thinking, their way of living has been influenced on the one hand byEstonian traditional songs, by the choir-singing activities oftheir parents and themselves, and on the other hand by thefolk and traditional music revivals that have spread in wavesover the world since their childhood in 60’s and 70’s.

Over the years, along with Néillidh Mulligan (Uilleann Pipes)some other Irish Artists who have taken part in the Irish-Estonian initiative include Seán Gilrane (Flute), Seán Garvey(Singing), Séan Ó Broin (Flute), Vincent Woods (Poet),Breanndán Begley (Accordian) & Peadar Ó Ceannabháin(Singing).

Max is a veteran wedding planner who is thinking aboutselling on his business. For now, however, there’s somethingmore pressing to worry about: organising a lavish weddingin a 17th century chateau. It’s no small task: there’s dozensof people to manage, unreliable electricity, a last-minutemusician change, and an increasingly demanding groom.Soon, things start going very wrong indeed. Can Max andhis team sort everything out without the guests noticing?

The latest film from ‘Untouchable’ directors Olivier Nakacheand Éric Toledano is a gloriously manic French comedy. It hitsthe ground running and barely takes a breath as weddingdisaster after disaster unfolds. With larger-than-lifecharacters and laugh-out-loud set pieces, C’est La Vie! is a delight.

“Co-directors and screenwriters Eric Toledano and OlivierNakache (Intouchables) pull another magical trick out of the hat with a ruthlessly-plotted breeze of ensemble goodhumour.” Screen International
