EuropeanBroadcastingAgreement

Stockholm - A surprise ogre, ment on guidelines for cross -frontier broadcasting in Europeemerged from a meeting ofgovemment ministers in the cityat the end of last month. ThcCouncil Of Europe agreed to

drop its insistence on the WestGerman system of advertisingblocks.

A compromise agreement allows one commercial break infeature films and drama lasting45-90 minutes; two breaks in a90 -minute film and three inprogrammes of more than 110

minutes. This is less than current-ly allowed in the UK. News andcurrent affairs shows of less than30 minutes cannot he interrupted.

A French proposal fora 60%quota of European productionwas abandoned, The European -Council's draft policy on broad-casting only calls for `n majority'of programmes to be made inEurope.

These guidelines could beratified by a European conventionin 1989.1.

London - Super Channel's court -appointed administrators ToucheRoss have called for a meetingwith the creditors and share-holders by mid -December to dis-cuss a reduced debt settlement. Ifan agreement is reached, SuperChafed can start from scratchwith its assets but no debts.

Touche Ross are awning for amore advantageous realisation ofassets rather than straight liquida-tion. Whether this happens is de-pendent on how much the mainshamholder - Italy's Beta Televi-sion - is prepared topay, and howmuch the creditors are preparedto lose. The EBU's Rules OnRadio Sponsorship

by Thomas Alexanderson

The impact of the new codegoverning sponsorship on radiowhich was drawn up by the Euro-pean Brgoadcasting Union(EBU) is not expected to be feltuntil next year. But the code, adopted in May, signifies achange of attitude among mem-ber organisations to sponsorship.

Despite the understandabledifference in views between thosepractising sponsorship and thosewho do not, broadcasters agreeon certain basic principles whichhave resulted in the followingguidelines.* The code is designed not tohamper either programme ex-changes or other joint schemes.* It is based on the principle oflive and let live; broadcasterswho am authorised to practisesponsorship should be able to doso, but only so long as those whocannot are not negatively affect-ed. When a programme isretransmitted in a country otherthan the country of origin, themmust be no obligation to transmitany sponsored message.* Originating broadcasters amnot allowed to offer, as pan ofEBU exchanges, programmessponsored by tobacco companies, alcohol manufacturers, phar-aceutical manufacturers, politi-

cal parties, trade unions or reli-gious organisations.* The possible sharing of spon-sorship between relaying andoriginating broadcasters must beagreed between the parties caseby case. The broadcast of thesponsor's message must occurbefore or after a programme toavoid the risk of a message 'leak-ing' into a country where spon-sorship is not permitted duringlive transmissions.* The maximum time of a spon-sored message is five seconds It

should assume the form of en an-nouncement only and not havethe character of advertising. Therules should apply to co -

productions and other projectscarried out jointly bye number ofEBU members as part of EBU ex-changes.

The larger audiences and theabsence of language barriers willalways make television mom at-tractive to sponsors than radio.Visually and graphically, a TVsponsor can communicate to alarge audience, even a rmdtina-lineal one. In radio, transnationalsponsorship is limited to a givenlanguage region - Anglo-Saxon,Francophone, German, Dutch/Flemish, Scandinavian etc.

But these differences mayrepresent an advantage for radio.Sponsorship is less likely to havean immediate impact on radioand is therefore less likely to up-set those who oppose it. It is

more subtle and, with less moneyat stake, it may arouse lessprotest.

The decision to create a newcode on sponsorship resultedfrom an EBU questionnaire dis-tributed last year. Replies from 21European radio organisationswere received. Some 11 said theywere authorised to practise spon-sorship, two said they would beable to in the near future and foursaid it would be possible at a laterdate. Restrictive legislation wasthe most frequently quoted obsta-cle to sponsorship, but a fewbroadcasters also cited corporatepolicies.

Progress OnThere am new developments inthe long dispute over digital audiotape (DAT) with a meeting be-tween equipment manufacturersand international record compa-nies scheduled to take place inLondon last week.

The meeting follows an ap-parent agreement by some

DAT Disputemanufacturers, led by Philips andSorry, on the incorporation of ananti -copying device (copycode),which allows a DAT player tomake only one copy of a CD. Themusic industry has been againstthe new DAT hardware pendingsettlement of the copyrightquestion. II

"It is just a sub-tle rhythm guitar part, no thrash-ing chords," explains McAloon.

The LP is currently on releasein Italy, Spain and France wherethe band recently made 11 TVappearances in one week. Mean-

while in the US, the album hashad enthusiastic reviews but littleairplay.

"The CBS companies arevery committed to the band andwe have worked solidly this yearbuilding up a good sound base"The only stumbling block is

Joshua GiveTo Ha

New Meaningrd Rock

by RoBert Lyng

From the group's beginning in1980, it was dear that Joshuawere on the way up. Their first al-bum, The Hand Is Quicker ThanThe Eye, made it into Bdlboard'sAlbum Greats' list, and the videoto their debut single, BmkenDream had heavy rotation onMTV, The second LP, Surrender, was released in Europe and putthe group on the intemationdmap in 1986.

But then it was time for achange and, with an entirely newfine -up, the LA -born guitaristand songwriter, Joshua Perahia, was ready for bigger and betterthings.

Catching the eye and ear ofDieter Dierks, West Germany'slegendary godfather of hard rockand Scorpions -mastermind, the

new Joshua was offered a contract

with Breeze Music. It did not takelong before the group made theirway to Cologne where, togetherwith producer Frank Mono, theyrecorded their third album, In -sense Defense, in Dierks' Studio.

The energy generated by Per-ahia (guitar), Rob Rock (vocals).Greg Schultz (keyboards), EmilLech (bass) and drummer TimGehrt is due to their breast -beating rhythms and snaringguitar solos.

Whether it is their optimisticanthem Reach Up, the heart-rending ballad RememberingYou, or the passionately orches-tral &and Alone, Joshua give newmeaning to 'hard rock made inGermany' - a mark of qualityrecognised around the world.

Soldat Louis - DistinctivelyCeltic Sound

by Held Ellison

Two bagpipe players give a dis-tinctly Celtic sound to SoldatLouis' self -titled album whichwas released recently by CBSFrance on its new label, Squats. This influence is due to the Brit-tany origins of most of the group. And for good measure, bass play-er Brad Donald Scott was import-ed from Scotland.

Dimmer Marc Pouliquin, bassist Patrick Le Berquier andguitarist/lead singer Serge Danetwere formerly in the band Noth-ing Plus, winners of the GolfDrouot Award. After that groupbroke up, they reformed as SoldatLouis (Danet's nickname), along

with Scott and bagpipe playersBruno Le Rouzic and Loic Taille-Mist. The well-known Frenchpop singer Renaud introducedthem to Peer -Southern Publish-ing, who signed them.

Soldat Louis' music has ahealthy seafaring sound, with ti-des like Du Rhtan, Des Femmes(Rum And Women) and EncoreUn Rhum (Another Rum).

CBS is promoting the groupwith appearances on French tele-vision stations F123, TFI and An-tenne 2. Soldat Louis were thesupport act for Renaud during hisrecent three week show at Paris'Zenith.

by Marc Mae s

VTM, the first Flemish commer-cial channel, has announced thatit will screen a weekly chart showwhen it goes on air next year. 'TVTop 30' will be broadcast weeklyas from February 4.

The slow will be hosted bysinger Koen Wouters and will fea-ture hits, clip classics, tour datesand background information onthe stars.

VTM has decided not to usethe official SIBESA chart for `TVTop 30' because, as the nationalBelgian list, it covers both Wallo-

nia and Flanders. Instead, thenew show will base its chart sole-ly on Flemish areas.

Jos Van Oosterwijck, formerMusic Director for BRT's 'Mike'TV show, came up with the ideaof how VTM's chart should be.compiled. "We will try to give anexact survey of the average tasteof our audience. That is why wewill use sales figures from about50 retailers in the Flemish territo-ry, plus the playlists of a numberof private radio stations."M

Fate Go Cruisin' For A Bruisin'

Currently touringEurope and having just

launched theirenergetic third LP,

'Cruisin' For A Bruisin;the Danish EMI -signedrockers Fate are ready

to leap into theEuropean charts.

Fate formed in 1984 and have

made their way into the in-ternational hard rock scene,

helped by their previous albumsFate (EMI) and A Matter Of Atti-tude (EMI). The band are knownfor their melodic, often keyboard-oriented approach, but theirdefiant looks and attitude clearlyadd to their kind of hullabalooimage - a vital component of theirappeal.

Their latest LP, Cruisin' For ABruisin, has just been releasedby all European EMI companies. It will be released in the US,Canada, Japan, Australia, Braziland Southeast Asia within thefirst quarter of next year. Mean-while the fust single from the LP,Lovers, ismceiving increasingsupport on the airwaves.

On the new LP, the hand'sline-up has changed considera-bly. Frontman and lyricist Jeff`Lox' Limbo (lead vocals), BobLance (drums) and Pete Steiner(bass) have stayed, but guitaristHank Sherman has been replacedby The Mysterious Mr Math whopreviously played with Danishrock band Purple Haze. Anothernewcomer is Flemming Rothauson keyboards, originally a

drummer.

by MeterDe Brup Kops

The 21 -year -old Moth, an ad-mirer of Simi Hendrix, is oftenpraised for his excellent fingertechnique. He is tuned in more torock than heavy metal, whereashis predecessor, Sherman, espe-cially favoured the latter style. Sothere is a clear swing to a moredirect and rocking stance. ButFate's melodic side has not beensacrificed. However Americanthey may sound at times, theyfind it very important to keeptheir Scandinavian roots alive, which for them means melody.

The importance the band giveto their appearance may be hestillustrated by quoting Limbo. Hesays; "We were in need of a key-board player, but the right lookwas important. In Nicolai Squarein Copenhagen, in a snowstorm, Isaw this guy with sunglasses, long hair, threadbare jeans andcowboy boots. I immediatelywent to him and offered him a jobas the keyboard player in Fate. Heaccepted and came along for re-hearsal. It went just fine. Not un-til later did he tell us that he wasactually a drummer. What theheck! Flemming rushed down tobuy some gear, and then we hadourselves a keyboard player."

Cruisin' For A Bruisin' has 10tracks, all written by the group -though some are still co -creditedto Sherman. Simon. Hanhartproduced. The LP was recordedin Puk Studio, Sweet Silence Stu-dio and Hookfarm Studio entirelywith real instruments. Limbosays: "We have even used mara-cas." The band regard the new LPas the first real Fate album - theresult of four years of trying tofind their own style.

Fate are currently on tour in

Europe, as special guests onSwedish guitarist Yngwie Malm-steen's tour. This includes 18

major cities in the Benelux,France, West Germany, Italy,Switzerland and Scandinavia. The tour ends in mid -December.

Reel Kruize, Senior Director

A&R/Marketing of EMI MusicEurope, has great confidence inthe hand: "Fate have got thelooks, the songs, the sound, theattitude, the energy and the driveto go cruisin' for a bruisintEnough to have faith in theirfuture."'

les A Small WorldFor Huey Lewis

The albums 'Sports'and Tore' by HueyLewis & The News

went multi -platinum intheir homeland, the

US. But now the bandhope their latest

release 'Small World;on Chrysalis, will open

up Europe to theirhumour layered R&B.

Thanks to the soundtrack ThePower Of Love, from the

film 'Back To the Future, HueyLewis & The News made a namefor themselves in Europe. With asmile on his face Huey LewisCregg, 38, predicts the decline ofWestern civilisation because ofthe way computers have takenover from people. It is also thetheme of Perfect World from theirfifth album, Small World.

Lewis: "We play to drum

machines in the studio and 1 wantit to sound like we rocked in thereand played live. On this album weplayed a lot mom than on Foreand I feel better about it.

"I probably should not saythis but it is not as commercial mthe other one. It is not sort of ra-dio ready. Some people have evenpointed out that there is some jazzon it. That is the kiss of the legen-dary Stan Getz on part 2 of the ti-tle track." The LP was recordedat Studio D Recording in Califor-nia and Bob Brown was Execu-tive Producer.

After the hand finish the Eu-ropean leg of the Small WorldTour they are likely to withdrawfrom the pop front for a while.Lewis wants to watch his childrengrow up, however he is consider-ing mom acting after his cameoappearance in 'Back To theFuture'.

Lewis: "I would like do tosome really heartfelt stuff. Itcould be fun and it enables you tostay home a little more."

After spending years in the wilderness, withlittle or no home-grown talent and a backwardmusic industry, there is new Life in Spain's en-tertainment sector. Much of the energy iscoming from Untie companies that have beenset up by entrepreneurs who have worked farthe major labels.

A good example of this new energy is inthe publishing sector. Teddysound is based inBarcelona and was formed when ex -musicianJoaquin Alfonso bought an old publishinghouse. At that time the company owned 800copyrights, all of them traditional Spanishmusic. Since then Teddysound has added 100mom Spanish titles and, more significantly,300 foreign copyrights.

These include quite a few Italian artistslike Den Harrow, the Pull Time catalogue, the latest LP from US soul/jazz singer andsaxophone player Rosa King, Sempre

Sonpre by Al Bano and Romina Power, and

MEIfrom Belgium, Hithouse's extremely suc-cessful Jack To The Sound Of The Under-ground. In the last year Teddysound hasplaced more than 150 masters of internationalhits in the domestic market. It has also scoredseveral home-grown hits with NanaMouskouri's Soledad, Fiesta by La DecadaProdigiosa and El Chiringuito by GeorgieDann, which has since been releasedthroughout Latin America.

Teresa Alfonso, Teddysound's Interna-tional Manager: "Them are a lot of new in-dependent labels, especially in Barcelona be-cause Madrid is dominated by the majors. They am small but highly active and it is thesecompanies that we usually work with, partlybecause we often find the majors just don'twant to co-operate."

The offshoot of all this activity is that in-dependents are now springing up all over thecountry. In towns and cities from Seville toBilbao, where them simply were not anylabels, what happened in Barcelona is beingrepeated.

In an attempt to capitalise on this, Teddy -sound is organising a Spanish delegation forthe next MIDEM conference in Cannes. Al-fonso says: "We hope all these labels willstick together so that we can compete with themajors. Together we have a lot of muscle andwe should use ittl

SINGLE OF THE WEEK

FreiheitKeeping The Dream Alive CBSThe talented German five -piecehave come up with a gentle midhighly melodic song from theAmway LE. Produced by ArmandMilker, the band's outstanding1Beatlesque1 vocal hamonies arewrapped in a tasteful orchestral set-

ting. provided by The London Symphony Orchestra and the Jack-son Singers. This grand pop ballad will appeal to a wide audienceand its makers will be around for a long time.

ALBUM OF THE WEEKLes Rita MitsoukoMarc & Robert - Virgin

This wayward French duo are stillexperimenting in an 'avant garde'direction. They mix up theirFrench roots with weird. but im-mensely catchy effects. Every sngis filled with quirky instrumenota-tion, haunting vocals and strong

r by hoes. Two of the 10 tracks, Hip Kit and Singing In The Shower.w,re ri,unied with the Marl Brothers from Sparks. Highlights:Tongue Dance and Peri, Fills

Rick AstleyTake Me To Your Heart BMGRCAAn unmistakeable SAW produc-tion with a strong melody and anadmirably sparse arrangement.

London Beat9AM - BING/Anxious

Their best bet yet for that elusivefirst hit. Great harmonies, a

strong tune and loads of charm. What more could anyone want?

Cliff Richard.Mistletoe And Wine - EMIA Christmas song complete with

peace and goodwill sentimentsd a cast of thousands on the fi-

nal chorus.

Bill WithersAin't No Sunshine - CBSLoads of atmosphere and a care-ful build-up on this Ben LiebrandRemix. Here Withers sounds likea younger B Caft.

Alexander O'NealThe Christmas Song - TabuA faithful rendition of this MelTorme classic. Very 40s orches-tration mil a good Nat King Coleimpersonation by O'Neal.

Pet Shop BoysLeft To My Own Devices -ParlophoneCan these people do anythingwrong? They certainly have nothere, an infectious song that putsmost of the rest of the competi-tion to shame.

BlondieDenis (The '88 Remix) arySerA severe, electro-driven faceliftthat completely denies the flair ofthe original 1978 recording.Apart from Harry's vocals, theoriginal backing has virtually dis-appeared M favour ofEighth Wonder -like machine.

MarillionFreaks (Live) - EMIOnce the flip side of the 1985 hitLavender, the song now returnsin its full glory as a majestic andheartfelt live version.

BrosCat Among The PigeoriSilent Night CBS

A brooding shuffle, coupled witha lush, acoustic -based renditionof the standard Christmas song.Slick production by NickyGraham.

U2Angel Of Harlem - IslandDedicated to Billie Holiday, thisousing number with its Stonesr -

influenced riff, is sure to beanother mega hit.

Art MangoLes Parfums De Sa Vie - CBS

Underpinned by a bouncy andattractive bass line this songshows what a highly expressivevoice Me go has. Strong, easy-going pop

Die Toten HosenEintleinetirden Horrorschau

Post punk pop that is enter-taining, economical and likely tosell in vast quantities, at least inthe German speaking countries.A record full of energy and greathooklines, such as on HierKommt Alex, 180 Grad and 35Jahre.

Lyle LovettPontiac - Curb

Great voice, great haircut and awonderful collection of acousticbased songs that flirt with coontry & western. Lovett's lyrics arenever less than good and occasionally truly inspired. This i

simple and direct music of thehighest quality, full of wit andcharm. Good enough to makeyou go out and buy some cowboyboots. Try Give Back My Heart,IA County and Simple Song.

TiffanyHold An Old Friend's Hand - MCA

On this second LP from the now17 -year -old American girl thematerial is again produced byGeorge Tobin. He has once morecombined the singer's raunchyand enthusiastic vocal delivery, with sparkling, if slightly pre-dictable, pop rhythms. The resultis an array of hit candidatesincluding Radio Romance (notethe resemblance to Spector'sBe My Baby), W2Ik Away WhileYou Can, It's The Lover and thetide cut.

West & ByrdWest & Byrd VirginEx-Comateeris West & Byrd havedelivered an album of melodra-matic, lightweight pop songs.Lyn Byrd's voice has more than ahint of Grace Bones about itwhich, combined with these un-fussy songs would seem to indi-cate a fair degree of hit potential.Check out Stay With Me andWinter.

Ellis Beggs & HowardHomelands - BMG/RCAIf you were expecting an album ofmaterial in the style of Big Bub-bles then you are in fora surprise.Much of the LP is actuallysophisticated and entertainingFM oriented rook, the son ofmaterial that always goes downwell in the US. A very promisingdebut effort. Bad Times. Ju JuGoodbye and Say A Prayer areamong the highlights.

Milli VanilliAll Or Nothing HansaBMG,Chrysall's

This duo's debut album is full ofdanceable potential hits on whichproducer Frank Farian has fullyexploited the 'The Girl You KnowIt's True' formula. Recommend-ed are: Pm Gonna Miss Ibu; AllOr Nothing: a version of theBoney-M hit Ma Baker and thenew single Baby Don't Forget MyNumber.

Jim CapaldiSome Come Running Jaws/Island

After a four-year silence, theformer Traffic drummer returnswith a strong, straight -from -the -heart rock LE The eight songswere largely co -written withPeter Vale and Miles Waters, whoare also in the impressive backingband. Other contributing musi-cians include George Harrison,Eric Clanton and ex Traffic com-panion Steve Winwood.

WET WET WET

Wet Wet Wet, unlike many new bands preparingto record their first album, knew exactly what theywanted. To retain and develop their strong soulinfluences and record with their hero; Al Green'sproducer Willie Mitchell otitis studio in Memphis.

Luck smiled on our boys and they spent 21/2months with Willie at his Royal Studios, returningto London, album proudly in hand. However, somewhere between the ancient 24 track studio inthe Tennessee backwoods and the slick technol-ogy of the English pop market that album.wasfiled in the closet to celled dust while the bandstarted from scratch re-recording the album thatbecame known as "Popped In, Souled Out

`The Memphis Sessions' (as the original albumbecame known) stayed alive in the bands heartdespite the phenomenal success of their 'debut'.Success further enhanced those sunny days inMemphis and Wet Wet Wet pledged that their realfirst album should see the light of day.

So finally, 18 mon ountless affords and morethan 2 million alb s worldwide later here theyare, 'The Memphis Sessions.' Some songs you'llknow, although they sound very different, othersare brand new including one "This Time" writtenespecially for them by Willie Mitchell.

So enjoy the first fruits of the labour from a once`unknown' Scottish band Wet Wet Wet: The Mem-phis Sessions.

20 YEARS OF BOUDISQUE

From Record ShopTo

Multi -Faceted CompanyBoudisque, the leading

distributor ofindependent product inthe Benelux, celebratesits 20th anniversary thismonth. Music & Media

profiles the multi-faceted company which, according to its founder

Ruud Jacobs, "began inthe 60s as a strange

little record shop in thecentre of Amsterdam':

Rcud Jacobs, 40, is a crea-

tive. off -beat entrepre-neur whose business

acumen i matched by his love ofthe trade.s He runs the company

relaxed butzany head office which overlooksAmsterdam's 11 river.

Jacobs first showed his en-trepreneurial flair working in aphotography supplies store in

Amsterdam where he managed todouble turnover in a year. Theciwners of the store recognised hispotential and offered him thechance to expand the business.Jacobs presented them with a

business plan for a record shopand on December 18 1968, Bou-disque was born.

In 1969, Boudisque began toimport records from the UK anda year later from the US - the firstDutch company to do this on aregular basis. Until then, the

Dutch record buying public hadbeen starved of the latest develop-ments in pop and rock. Jacobssays demand easily exceeded

supply: "There used to be oneweekly consignment of imparts, trriving at Schiphol airport everySaturday morning. People used tobe queueing outside the shopwhen I left to pick up the records."

Boudisque hit the news head-lines. in 1970 when it releasedthree bootleg LPs (two by BobDylan and one by the RollingStones) on its me Hobo labelwhich was set up especially forthe occasion. "We really did notknow it was illegal," says Jacobs."We were very naive and actuallymade inquiries about payingmechanical royalties. The albumssold really well and we got a lotof publicity."

The business never lookedback. Boudisque began import-

At the beginning of the 80s.Jacobs began to look for aboutDO I million in new investmentto set up the company's own dis-tribution network and recordlabel. The company had alreadystarted to manufacture locally un-der licence for Rough Trade andFactory Records, as it could nolonger supply dealers by importalone. Nick Powell, an old friendof Jacobs who had helpedRichard Branson set up Virginand who had just left the compa-ny, bought a majority stake inBoudisque.

"Boudisque offered me theopportunity to keep my hand inthe record business which for

contractual reasons I could not doin the UK:" Powell says. He is notinvolved in the day-to-day run-ning of the company, concentrat-ing on his own Palace group ofcompanies which specialise inthe production and distribution offilm and video. "For a long time the company wasmainly a wholesaler but now the accentis definitely on exclusive distributiondeals, mainly for the Benelux."

Boudisque now imports anddistributes singles. LPs, CDs andvideos worldwide with a com-bined weekly turnover of about15.000 units. This year, the com-pany signed an important distri-bution deal with CBS in whichthe major company will promoteand distribute Boudisques more

music industry with a source ofnew talent which majors usuallymiss the first tints around. TheRamones, Schooly-D (UK hip -hop smash) and the Beastie Boysall began on obscure labels."

Boudisque presses a largeproportion of what it distributesand has its own record labelswhich release about 80 new titlesa week. Elinom Hamaker co --manages the company's label ac-tivities with Laurens Meijer.

Hamaker: "Boudisque set upthe small indie label Megadisc in1982 and began manufacturingunder licence for Rough Trade

d F story Records. Althoughwe had some successes such as

launching The Smiths and ScrittiPolitti in the Benelux, it was afinancial disaster. And we had tosell it off.

"After a while we decided tosty again and made licensingagreements with UK labels suchas 4AD (Cocteau Twins), Beg-gars Banquet and Blast First(Sonic Youth). This time it reallytook off and we now have a teamof seven people, including a plug-ger in Hilversum."

Eighteen months ago, Bou-disque acquired the Beneluxrights for UK dance label RhythmKing. After initial heavy invest-ment, the label is now providingBoudisque with chart success

such as recent singles by S -Ex-press and Bomb The Bass. Othercurrent successes include LPs bySonic Youth (an old favourite ofBoudisque) and Belgian group

Boudisque presses mostmaterial on its Torso label whichhas become a major independentwith a catalogue of 100 albumsand about 50 singles. It also hasthe Palace Records label for discomaterial and products such as analbum and CD by opera singerLuciano Pavarotti, which wasscheduled for release at the end oflast month. As well as this, it hastwo smaller labels: Megaton forheavy metal and Mushroom fortrash metal.

The company received a se-vere blow six months ago when itlost the exclusive European rightsto produce and distribute the fa-mous US indie label Enigma, which it had owned since 1983, toVirgin. However, Hamaker is op-timistic about the future and saysone of the company's strengths isits location.

Following Nick Powell's in-volvement in Boudisque, the

company expanded into videodistribution. Four years ago,

Boudisque received the licencefor the Benelux distribution of thewhole PolyGram music videocatalogue - a major coup. And itmade a number of exclusive dis-tribution deals with smaller com-panies, which had the rights to hitclips such as Michael Jackson'sThriller This year it acquired theBenelux distribution rights forthe EMI catalogue. Both Jacobs and Powell arekeen to develop Boudisque as ageneral entertainment company, unwell es moving into music pub-lishing. Powell, "I am very keento see Boudisque become in-volved in film production anddistribution in Holland.
