Parry – I was GladLyadov – The Enchanted LakeFinzi – For St CeciliaMussorgsky, arr. Ravel – Pictures at an Exhibition
This concert showcases twentieth-century music from England and Russia, beginning with Parry’sfamous anthem, written for the coronation of Edward VII and performed earlier this year at a certainroyal wedding! The University Chorus will continue the English theme with a triumphant celebration of‘universal song’ in Gerald Finzi’s homage to St Cecilia, the patron saint of music. By contrast, Lyadov’sshort orchestral work of 1909 evokes a watery stillness, its delicate instrumentation and iridescentharmonies anticipating the music of the French impressionists. The second half of the concertfeatures Mussorgsky’s musical promenade around an exhibition of paintings by his friend VictorHartmann, enhanced by Ravel’s vivid palate of orchestral colour.
Tickets £13 (adults), £7 (students), £4 (balcony-standing) available from the GulbenkianBooking Office, T: 01227 769075. Online bookings www.thegulbenkian.co.uk
