Ein Hod was founded in 1953 by and a Marcel Janco the Dada artist

group of artists and remains the only artists’ village in Israel, and one of few of its kind in the whole world. We found ourselves taking a 150year step back into history.

Upon entering the museum we found one large room filled with scores of fine wood boxes and a small area cordoned off for concerts of original gramophone fro 1900’s. Immediately we realized we were standing amidst one of the richest collections of antique mechanical music machines in the Middle East.

Nisan took us from the music boxes that played one song per spool, to ones that held 9 songs – a clever precursor to computer programs. As we progressed from the hurdy gurdy to the street organ, the oldest mechanical music device, we enjoyed the hands-on experience that defines this museum

US-born former documentary film maker Nisan Cohen began his captivating collection of small and large music boxes, hurdy gaudies, hand-operated automatic pianos, gramophones and a host of other antique musical instruments about 40 years ago. Cohen traveled the world during a filmmaking career that began in the 1950s

The collection, which was accumulatedover 40 years by Nisan Cohen, the founderof the Nisco Museum, contains musicboxes, hurdy grudges, an automatic organ,a reproducing player piano, a collectionof 100 year old manuals, gramophones, hand operated automatic pianos andmany other antique musical instruments.

A musical box (UK usage; music box in us English) is a 19th century automatic musical instrument that produces sounds by the use of a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder or disc so as to pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb. They were developed from musical snuff boxes of the 18th century and called carillons à music. Some of the more complex boxes also have a tiny drum and small bells, in addition to the metal comb.
