    - A monophonic melody with a flowing-unmeasured vocal line and is the liturgical chant of the Roman Catholic Church.

    - Early monophonic settings of the words of the two main liturgies or services of the Roman Catholic Church

    Music of the Troubadours and Trouvers

    - Includes various musical and poetic forms, usually sectional in nature. - Performed by Troubadours and Trouvers - LISTENING EXAMPLE: Le Jeu de Robin et Marion by Adam de la Halle

    - A commemoration of the sacrifice of Christ on the corss. It consists of some texts to be sung and others to be recited.

    - Could be divided according to texts that remain the same throughout the liturgical year (Ordinary) and texts that change according to the day of the Church year on which the mass is sung (Proper).

    ORDINARY PROPER

    1. Introit (Sung during the entrance or the priest)

    2. Kyrie (prayer for mercy)

    3. Gloria (joyful hymn of praise, glory be to God on high)

    4. Gradual

    5. Alleluia (praise the Lord) or Tractus (for requiem mass or lent and ember days)

    6. Credo (longest part of the mass, I believe in one true God)

    7. Offertory

    8. Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy, and ends with a Hosanna)

    9. Agnus Dei (lamb of God)

    10. Communion

    Madrigals

    - A fixed secular form with two or three verses with the same music followed by a stanza with contrasting music (AAB)

    - Texts may be concerned with love, philosophy, the beauties of nature, or similar themes.
