    MUSIC 6 REVIEWER MAJOR AND MINOR TRIAD

    Major triadthe 1st

    (root) , 3rd

    (major third), and the 5

    th( perfect fifth) note forms a triad

    first note

    the root

    second note ( the third) - count 4 half steps from the root position

    third note (the fifth)- count three half steps from the second note

    Minor triad - the 1st (root) , 3rd (minor third), and the 5th ( perfect fifth) note forms a triad

    Remember a major third is 4 halfsteps from a note

    minor third is 3 half steps from the note

    So: A major triad consist of a major third ( 4 half steps) then followed by a minor third ( 3 half step)

    A minor triad consist of a minor third ( 3 half steps) then followed by a major third ( 4 half steps)

    Also remember: A triad is named after its lowest not which is the root note

    A major triad can be changed to a minor triad by lowering the 3rd

    by one half step.
