The Accredited Ballycastle Museum is housed in the town’s eighteenth century courthouse and market building. Visitors can explore the fascinating history of the Irish Homes Industries Workshop and the important role it played in the Arts and Crafts Revival in Ulster. Highlights on display include the Liscolman pot – an early Bronze Age food vessel – glass, and a tram axle associated with Boyd’s eighteenth century industries and the magnificent Taise Banner from the first Feis na nGleann in 1904.

Ballymoney Museum is located in Ballymoney Town Hall and offers visitors the opportunity to explore the vibrant history of the people and places of the Ballymoney area with a particular focus on local motorcycle road racing. The Accredited Museum also explores the story of the area since early times through its Victorian collection which includes the enigmatic Derrykeighan Stone from which the museum takes its logo. Visitors can also research local and family histories from across the Causeway in the resource area.

Coleraine Town Hall, built in 1859, is Coleraine Museum’s Accredited exhibition venue. Coleraine Museum at Coleraine Town Hall is open for over 6 months of the year. Visitors can begin to explore ‘Irish History Starts Here’ with its story of Mountsandel – the first settlement in Ireland nearly 10,000 years ago, and the history of Coleraine as the first Planted town 400 years ago. With an extensive collection supporting a rich and important history, different themes from the collection are explored through a range of temporary exhibitions. In the absence of a permanent museum venue for visitors, an appointment can be made with Museum Services to explore other parts of the collection. The iconic listed building in the town centre also houses the Visitor Information Centre and other community cultural events.

METALS, WEALTH & WAR EXHIBITION6 February - 21 April Admission Free

Gold, jewellery, fine clothes, personal protection, battles for land, destruction of forests, industrialisation… all may sound familiar from today’s headlines. However, our fascination with material possessions and the resulting power struggles began in prehistory. Bronze Age communities have not only left us with metal weapons, ornaments, tools, and elaborate pottery, but their way of life left a mark on the landscape and the genetic makeup of modern Ireland that is still visible today. This exhibition surveys the Bronze Age in the Causeway area, and explores some of the most recent archaeological discoveries.

This exhibition commemorates the centenary of the Royal Air Force, from its formation on 1 April 1918. The history of the RAF is explored, including its role in Ulster during WWII at Coastal Command Airfields in Aghanloo, Limavady, Ballykelly and Mullaghmore.

This new exhibition tells the story of the people and places of the NW200, showcasing a rich selection of photographs from the Chronicle and Constitution archive, covering the years 1987 to 1997. This exhibition will also explore the importance of the emergency services; while a rich display of bikes, leathers and NW200 memorabilia will be on show.

Museum Services’ NW200 Capture the Moment photographic competition returns for another year. Amateur and professional photographers alike are invited to help us take a snapshot of race week 2018. Photographs must be taken over the period 12 - 20 May inclusive, and should be submitted to Ballymoney Museum by 3 June. Entries will be exhibited in Ballymoney Museum and then stored in the Museum Services archives as a captured moment in time.

Exhibition dates:4 May - 20 June, competition entries from 2017, including winners in all categories will be on display.

Wars of the seventeenth century, Penal Laws imposing civil and religious penalties, Scottish immigration, economic challenges and the introduction of new industries all impacted on the Causeway area in the early eighteenth century. This was the background of the first organised migration from Ulster to North America – the 1718 Bann Valley Migration. This exhibition explores the people and places of the Causeway area, connecting local people and places with bigger national stories. Discover what was happening, why it happened, and what the 1718 Bann Valley Migration was all about.

Among the Great War tragedies, battles and deaths, there arose a flurry of white wings – the nursing sisters’ caps and veils. Sister Molly McGinnis MM, from Faughanvale, is one of those unknown stories local to the Ballykelly/Greysteel area. This talk by the Roe Valley Ancestral Researchers (RVAR) details their search for Molly and the story of courageous service while volunteering in military hospitals in Etaples, France. RVAR’s search for Molly McGinnis is part of the PEACE IV Understanding Our Area programme (see pg 23 for more details).

ONGOING PROJECTS

This project is engaging community groups across the borough with the rich material contained in the Sam Henry Collection. Sam (1878 – 1952) is best known as a folklorist and recognised for his ‘Songs of the People’ series of songs collected locally and printed in the Northern Constitution. As well as this, he was a keen photographer, writer, radio broadcaster and much more. Subject to funding, community outreach projects will be running alongside the Sam Henry project.

ONGOING PROJECTS

PEACEIV Understanding our Area is a cross community programme to increase the understanding and expression of our history, culture, people and places through museum collections, historic sites and cultural heritage. The initiative is part of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s PEACE IV Local Area Action Plan, funded by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, which is providing £3.5 million for community projects across the borough.

A range of community-led projects will be supported by Museum Services, along with a range of events, showcases and resources exploring the history of the Causeway area. The following projects have been accepted as part of the programme:

BALLINTOY ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, by training up their volunteers, will create an oral history archive of local people telling their stories about everyday life in the Ballintoy area. Supplemented with material from various collections, these stories will be shared in a DVD with accompanying booklet.

BALLYLOUGH LIVING HISTORY TRUST will co-ordinate a training programme looking at aspects of local history, archaeology and built heritage. It will cover various elements from genealogy and archiving practices, to archaeology, living history, and arts based interpretation, in order to build capacity within the local community.

BALLYMONEY ROYAL BRITISH LEGION will record the history of the Ballymoney branch. They will also tell the story of the development of the RBL in the wider Causeway Coast and Glens area through stories of the people and the buildings. They will share this story in various ways with the wider community, demonstrating how, since its formation, the Royal British Legion has locally supported ex-servicemen and their families.

CAREY HISTORICAL SOCIETY are developing a fieldnames project for the parish of Culfeightrin, near Ballycastle. By holding a series of mapping days and interviewing local people, they will record and publish the landscape names of the area.

COLERAINE ULSTER SCOTS REGENERATION GROUP will tell the story of the people from the Bann Valley who migrated to America in 1718 – who they were, why they went, where they went, and the contribution they made.

CUSHENDUN BUILDINGS PRESERVATION TRUST will explore the history of Cushendun as a visitor destination since its development as a bathing resort in the 19th Century. They will use postcards, photographs, hotel visitor books, and oral reminiscences to paint the picture of life for locals and tourists to the village, which will be shared through an exhibition and digital archive.

DERVOCK AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION will develop a heritage trail and book highlighting the rich and diverse heritage of Dervock and the surrounding area, people and places. By recording oral histories they will reflect on the language, the history of the local linen industry, as well as farming traditions and horse fairs.

DROMBOUGHIL COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION aim to explore the heritage of the local area by engaging with the local community to record oral stories – including memories from some of the local schools in the area which are now closed – and archive old photographs. They will share this by producing a book and holding a community event at which the photographs and local historical artefacts can be displayed.

GLENSHANE CARE ASSOCIATION will, while assessing how accessible sites and collections are for adults with physical and/or learning disabilities, explore the heritage of their local area and the wider Causeway Coast and Glens. They will produce a publication detailing their findings which will allow others to make informed decisions regarding the accessibility of these sites.

HERVEY HERITAGE GROUP are working to place markers along a heritage trail of sites on the Causeway Coast identified with the Earl Bishop Hervey. This will provide an opportunity for people, locals and visitors alike, to learn about this colourful eighteenth century character.

ONGOING PROJECTS

KILREA DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION will develop a walking tour of Kilrea including the local churches and historic buildings, which will be accompanied by a brochure giving detail on each site. As part of their project they will equip group members with the necessary skills to guide visitors around the sites, and to assist with genealogical research.

MOUNTSANDEL DISCOVERY AND HERITAGE GROUP will share the story of Mountsandel, increasing the awareness and understanding of this significant prehistoric site. They will employ a number of methods, including a comic style booklet, interactive interpretation, and exhibitions, and will explore ways to further engage people with the site and its history.

PORTRUSH HERITAGE GROUP plans to conduct a geophysical survey of Antrim Gardens, Portrush, which will build on the findings of the 2005 excavation. They will share the heritage of the site, its contribution in the history of Portrush and links to the wider area in a series of community events.

RATHLIN DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION will deliver a programme of training workshops covering history, archaeology, and aspects of archiving such as oral histories, genealogy, curating, and the design and delivery of presentations and exhibitions, with the aim of building capacity on Rathlin and leaving a skills legacy on the island.

ROE VALLEY ANCESTRAL RESEARCHERS will tell the story of Sister Molly McGinnis, a nurse from Ballykelly from a nationalist family, who was awarded the Military Medal while working as a V.A.D. during World War I.

LOAN BOXESTHE ACCESSIBLE HERITAGE regional project, in partnership with RNIB, is designed to allow people with sight loss to gain hands-on access to different aspects of the borough’s past, and highlight how they experience history in these places. The group aims to produce an accessible heritage guide for the borough.

THE LORE OF THE LAND regional project, in partnership with Clanmil Housing Association, aims to engage with older residents of the borough to stimulate reminiscence and discussion of local folklore, including participant’s own experiences. The aim is to produce a book exploring and sharing cultural heritage through the folklore of Causeway communities.

HISTORY RESOURCE AREABALLYMONEY TOWN HALL

The History Resource Area has a selection of books and history research files available for use, covering family histories, World War I and II, local histories of Ballymoney, Coleraine and Ballycastle, archaeology, and much more. With church records dating back to 1770s, local graveyard surveys, the Ballymoney Workhouse register, and local school and electoral registers, this is also a great place to start researching your ancestry or the local area.
