Museum Partners
• Dedicated curator and collections policy • Ability to provide artifact descriptions and
video scripts• Collection Management System - all
museums used Past Perfect, but fields utilized were different
• Museum partners participated in teacher workshops and worked with teachers to select artifacts
• What in the heck is metadata?....oh, we do that already!
• Library language vs. Museum language
• Language variance even among museums - we use different fields for that than you do
• Copyright and ownership of digital images and videos
Museum Component
• Standardized on Library of Congress Subject Headings and Thesaurus on Graphic Materials II
• Description of items for display on the web vs. description of items in Museum databases
• Participation in Teacher Workshops and Focus Groups aided in the selection of artifacts
Museum Component
• Year 1 – Focus Groups– 10 Focus Groups Held – Agenda– Who participated?– How we arranged for participants– How the participants’ feedback
changed Year 2
K-12 Component
• Year 2 – Teacher Workshops– Logistics – who, what, when and
where?
• Year 3 – Teacher Workshops– Logistics – who, what, when and
where?– What we did differently and why
K-12 Component
• Prepare for staff changes. • No Homework for Teachers--
Remember--they just give it! • Require recommendations for
workshop participants. • Screen participants in order to include all
areas of the curriculum.
Lessons Learned
• Teachers + Input = Ownership Ownership + Valuable Resources =
Success• Lesson plans are great, but lesson
activities are wonderful
• Plan workshops regionally to include all areas of your users.
• Promote, Promote, Promote!
Lesson Learned
• Museums aren’t the same - standards vary
• Museums often have very small staff
• Outsourcing can often save time and money BUT competing demands many change your timetable
• Successful digital projects can help create digital programs
Lesson Learned
