Rossella Matamoros performs the ritual of artistic creation. Her work celebrates the simultaneity of movement and mark, a moment frozen in time, the record of an action. The works on display in this exhibition are testament to the artist’s will to make the performance, the creative act, as equally important as what remains, the art object

Matamoros has been immersed in the performative throughout her career. In the late 1980s she spent hours in the National Theater watching and drawing rehearsals. Dance too became an important aspect of her work in the 1990s. As stated by the artist, “Through dance, I have learned about the instantaneousness of movement and its relationship to the gestural drawing and the line, which requires a mental and physical synthesis sustained by memory. Thus, in a few seconds it is possible to capture the image and feeling of the dancer.” By the year 2000 and to date, Matamoros is dedicated to performance art, often incorporating others in the creative act, from hired performers to the art-viewing public. These staged performances have a basic structure, yet they are intuitive, not scripted. They go with the flow, as the artist herself likes to say. The artist’s painting and mixed media work follow these same precepts. Within the work there is an underlying motivation, which in turn yields to the subconscious gestural act dictated by the medium and the artist’s emotion.

It is an honor for Museo Islita to present a selection of Rossella Matamoros’s paintings and mixed media works and we hope our viewers become absorbed and inspired by the artist’s gestures.

Rossella Matamoros se desenvuelve en el rito de la creación artística. Su trabajo celebra la simultaneidad del movimiento y la marca, un momento congelado en el tiempo, el registro de una acción. La obra exhibida en esta exposición es testamento de su deseo de hacer performance, el acto creativo, igualmente importante a lo que permanece, el objeto de arte.

Matamoros ha estado inmersa en lo preformativo a través de su carrera. Hacia finales de los años ochenta pasaba horas en el Teatro Nacional observando y dibujando los ensayos. La danza también se convirtió en aspecto importante de su trabajo en los años noventa. Como ha dicho la artista, “Por medio de la danza, he aprendido de la instantaneidad del movimiento y su relación al dibujo gestual y la línea, que requiere una síntesis mental y física sostenida por la memoria. De este modo, en pocos segundos es posible capturar la imagen y la emoción de la bailarina.”1 Ya para el año 2000 y hasta la fecha, Matamoros se dedica al arte de performance, a menudo incorporando otros en el acto creativo, tanto intérpretes profesionales como al público que acude a sus eventos artísticos. Estos performance tienen una estructura básica, pero son intuitivas, no siguen un guión particular. Ellos van con la corriente, como a la artista misma lo sugiere. El arte plástico de Matamoros sigue este mismo precepto. Dentro de la obra hay una motivación subyacente que a su vez produce un acto gestual subconsciente dictado por el medio y la emoción de la artista.

Es un honor para el Museo Islita presentar esta selección de pinturas y obras de técnica mixta de Rossella Matamoros y esperamos que nuestro público se logra absorber e inspirar por los gestos de la artista.

Museo Islita nació de la convicción que el arte puede mejorar el mundo. Este proyecto inició con un encuentro de artistas invitados por el Hotel Punta Islita a intervenir espacios públicos con la idea de embellecer el pueblo, mejorar la calidad de vida de sus habitantes, engendrar un destino cultural para turistas en harmonía con la naturaleza, y aumentar la sensibilidad hacia el arte y la sostenibilidad dentro de la comunidad. Esta experiencia también estableció los cimientos de varios grupos de artistas locales fomentados por el Museo y capacitados por artistas invitados. Doce años después la iniciativa es fundamental en la vida de los artistas locales, además de ser central dentro del concepto de sostenibilidad del Hotel y de la Fundación Villafranca-Zürcher. El principal resultado, la prosperidad de un segmento de la sociedad previamente poco beneficiado en zona rurales, jóvenes y mujeres, para quienes el quehacer artístico significa fuente de ingreso, mejora en autoestima y sentido de propósito vital. Exposiciones como esta también son parte de nuestra misión de compartir más de la cultura costarricense con personas de la zona y aquellos que nos visitan.

Islita Museum was born out of the conviction that art can better the world. This project began with a gathering of artists invited by Hotel Punta Islita to intervene public spaces. The intention was to beautify the town, improve the quality of life of inhabitants, engender a cultural destination for tourists in harmony with nature, and increase awareness of art and sustainability within the community. The experience also helped establish various local artists groups, trained by visiting artists, that are fostered by the Museum. Twelve years later, the initiative remains fundamental in the lives of local artists, and is integral to the sustainability strategy of the Hotel and Villafranca-Zürcher Foundation. The main result: prosperity of youth and women, both marginalized segments of rural society, for whom art signifies a source of income, self expression, improved esteem and a life purpose. Exhibitions like this one are another way in which we fulfill our mission to share Costa Rican culture with people in the area and those who visit us from afar.
