Members, Artists & Collectors Socialize at Ab-Ex / Re-Con Preview Party
Art history was made at the exciting members preview of our Abstract
Expressionism exhibition. Fritz Bultman’s monumental 1961 work, Blue Triptych, was seen in public for the very first time. Bultman’s son and grandson were present
for this great moment. Also at the party were Stan Brodsky, Judith Godwin and Rita
Rogers, the three living abstractionists who each had focused installations within the
exhibit. As always, members of the Museum saw the show first. To find out how to
receive invitations to these and other exclusive Museum events, call the
membership department, (516) 484-9338, ext. 23, or log onto
nassaumuseum.org/membership.
Board Member Dr. Todd Cohen loaned aDiebenkorn work to the exhibition. He is shown withEdith Seligson, Board Member and past BoardPresident Alan Seligson and Board PresidentClarence F. Michalis.

Visitors Tour Museum’s WoodsWith naturalist Rich Kelly and Museum
Senior Educator Jean Henning as
guides, a large group hiked along the
Museum’s ravine and pinetum trail,
looking along the way for early spring
wildflowers. Like many of the Museum’s
most successful public and school
programs, A Walk in the Woods was a
collaborative activity, organized and
offered with the North Shore Land
Alliance.
Grasslands RestorationThrough a matching grant from The
Barker Welfare Foundation, we retained
Andrew Gladysz of LI’s Gladysz Farms to
mow more than eight acres of fields that
were overgrown with invasive porcelain
berry plants. As a result, parts of the
property that had been impossible to
walk through are now accessible. By
continuing restoration projects like this,
we hope to restore our nature preserve
and wildlife habitat.

SECOND FLOOR GALLERIES
June 29 through October 13, 2013
The Museum’s Second Floor Galleries feature work by five contemporary artists:
Nina Chanel Abney, Justin Craun, Wendell Gladstone, Erik Parker, and Tom Sanford.
Each artist will be shown in a focused installation.
The exhibition is organized for the Museum’s Contemporary Collectors Circle by CCC
co-chairs Elaine Berger and Alison Wolfson.
The five artists in the show, aged 31 to 44, represent a movement of young artists
involved in the use of very strong color. They share an interest in combining figurative
and abstract elements in new and innovative ways. The famed art collector Hubert
Neumann called it “an asymmetric aesthetic for a fractured asymmetric world."

Peter MaxOctober 26, 2013 through February 23, 2014
This exhibition takes the first in-depth
look at the original drawings of Pop artist
Peter Max, juxtaposing portfolios of his
mostly black-and-white drawings on
paper against many of the artist’s larger
and more color-saturated works in a
variety of media. Covering a wide range
of subjects, these never-before-seen
drawings result in one of the most
recognizable and commercially
successful artistic practices of our times.

The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby may just have been one of the best parties on Long Island since the days of Jay Gatsby himself. Guests got
into the spirit of the fabled Jazz Age with flapper dresses, headbands, feathers, and mountains of sparkling jewelry. The lavish
tented pavilions for the cocktail hour and dinner similarly evoked the extravagant décor of Long Island’s Gold Coast history. The
Museum Ball is the museum’s major annual fundraising affair, raising significant support for exhibitions and educational
programming. The 2013 Ball was chaired by Museum Board Member Angela Susan Anton, the publisher and owner of Anton
Community Publications. The Journal Committee was chaired by M. Patricia Janco-Tupper, senior vice president, wealth advisor
for Wells Fargo Bank; and Rebecca Creavin, senior vice president, private banker for Wells Fargo Bank. Congratulations to our
chairs and committee members for a very successful and beautiful event.

EDUCATION
Celebrate Earth DayThe Museum’s Earth Day celebration attracted more
than 200 children and adults to a day of activities in
the galleries and on the grounds including
construction of a large-scale sculpture. Paint was
thrown, dripped and rolled in the creation of abstract
art works. The Science Museum of Long Island was on
hand with a delightful group of critters including a prickly hedgehog, a most
colorful snake and a tortoise boasting a gorgeously-detailed shell.
Life in a Gold Coast MansionIn one of our more unusual family programs, the
Museum’s historic mansion revisited its Gold Coast past,
a time when it was the home of Childs and Frances
Frick and their children. Sally Hirschwerk charmingly
portrayed Martha Frick, reading a letter that Martha
wrote to her grandmother in which she shared news of
the estate’s impressive menagerie, including even an
alligator. The day also featured a fun scavenger hunt
throughout the galleries, doll making with artist Pamela Koehler and time to play
some games popular during the Gold Coast’s 1920s era.
Glen Cove Teachers Visit MuseumTeachers from Glen Cove’s Deasy Elementary School
recently toured the Museum as part of a professional
development day, sponsored by the New York State
Council on the Arts, that focused on ways to integrate
the Museum’s exhibitions and resources with classroom
learning. The teachers used Niki de Saint Phalle’s SnakeTree sculpture to explore line, shape, color and patterns.
Glen Cove Children Tour Museum Participants in the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club, the Glen Cove Youth Bureau, and
the After 3 Program, visited the museum with Victoria Crosby and Irina Sushko of
the Glen Cove Arts Council and enjoyed a private gallery tour followed by a hands-
on art activity creating art works inspired by the Museum’s exhibition of abstract
expressionist art. The Glen Cove Arts Council introduces youth to the arts through
scholarships and visits to museums, theater, ballet and opera.
As portrayed by Sally Hirschwerk,Martha Frick writes to hergrandmother.
Autism & the ArtsGavin puts the finishing touches on his abstract art collage. He is a
participant in Autism & the Arts, a program in which art therapists
use the visual arts to spark communication. Autism & the Arts is
funded in part by the North Shore Autism Circle.
