Summary

The Library and Learning Commons has been undertaking revised opening hours andimproved services delivery both in term of learning space and reading materials under theMonash Student Experience Questionnaire (MSEQ) Action Plans 2009. As it has been ayear without any major change being carried out, a decision is required as to the wayforward.

Background

In recent years many improvements and developments have been undertaken in the libraryservice including:

1. Additional front line staff recruited

2. The Library opening hours have been implemented /extended as follows:

Note:Normal hours: 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Weekdays); 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

(Weekends); Public Holidays: Closed

Mid-semester break: 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (Weekdays); Closed (Weekends);

Extended hours (3 weeks before exams): 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. (Weekdays);9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Weekends); Closed (Public Holidays);

End of semester: 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (Weekdays); Closed (Weekends &Public Holidays)

3. Relocated shelves to create more study space. New additional furniture delivered.

4. Multifunctional printer has been added to Level 1, total number of printers is 3. Level2 has 1 small printer and 1 medium size printer. Level 3 has 1 small printer.

5. Completed rezoning of quiet areas.

Introduction

A survey was carried out since the 21 st September 2010 till today to gauge the feedbackfrom the students ’ in regards to the proposed 24 hours library.

The web address of the survey is http://www.survey.monash.edu.my/lib-opening-hours/.

Sample of the questions asked are as follows:

As of 17 th October 2010, a total of 254 students took part in the poll. With the following asthe results:

Evaluation:

From the result gathered, it can be deduced that majority of the students surveyed arerequesting for the library and learning commons to be opened for 24 hours, seven days aweek.

In item (1), 87% of the 254 students surveyed thinks that the current library opening hoursare too short to accommodate to their learning demands. The remainder thinks otherwise.

There is a great demand for library to be opened for 24 hours especially during theweekdays with 109 students supporting this claim.

It should be noted that in item (3), the opening time selection was limited to 12am only, as

we took into consideration of the staffing in weekends. However, the library should go 24/7nearing exam period, especially from Week 10 onwards as noted in item (4).

54% of the respondents have tried booking tutorial rooms for studying. Of these, thenumbers of people who are satisfied and dissatisfied with the service are almost equal. Mostof the respondents has not use the service before, 46% in item 5 and 49% denoting notapplicable in item 6.

89% of the respondents think the library should become 24/7 for some weeks. Based on thesurvey, recommendable is from Week 10 onwards. However, some requested from Week 7onwards as the second waves of assignments, presentations and essay usually starts fromWeek 7 onwards.

Item 8 denotes to what extend should the library to be opened if it does goes 24/7. Majorityof the respondents would like first two floors to be opened (67%). The reasons due to mostof the study tables and work stations are located in these two floors. However, we dorecommend that the third floor to be opened as well, at least the study area, but not thediscussion area.

Of the 254 students taking apart in the survey, 105 are from School of Business, the highestamong all. 68 are from School of Engineering, 39 from Science, 16 from Jeffrey CheahSchool of Medicine and Health Science; 12 and 15 are from School of Arts and SocialSciences and IT respectively.

Conclusion:

From the findings, it can be concluded that the demand for a 24/7 library is substantial forthe committee to consider. The LLC is considered the heart of all students’ learning and as aconducive learning place that inspires learning through collaboration and discussion.

Recommendations:

1. Operating Hours for weekends and weekdays should be made 24 hours, 7 days aweek from Week 7 onwards.

2. All floors are to be opened for students to use, minus the References and AudioVisual (Multimedia) area at Level Three.

3. Staffing issue- to be discussed in the committee.



As a reference, attached is the University of Leicester Library Opening Hours. SomethingMonash University Sunway Campus can emulate.
