Be the Pack LeaderPuppies are naturally hard-wired to follow a pack leader. A pack leader is, by definition, strong, stable and consistent -- traits many new puppy owners forget. Many of people are strong leaders in their jobs but when they come home, they turn to mush with their dogs. Then they are puzzled as to why their dog won't behave.

Puppies sense our confidence levels and will take control if they perceive us as weak. When this happens, bad behaviors -- such as excessive barking, chewing, leash-pulling or anxiety -- will develop.

The most important thing you can do is become your puppy’s pack leader. This role doesn’t begin when your dog is six-months old or when he’s bad -- it should be maintained throughout the entire dog training experience. For your new puppy to grow into a healthy, balanced dog, you must demonstrate leadership from day one!

HousebreakingAll dogs become conditioned never to eliminate in their dens. From two to four months of age, most pups pick up on the concept of housebreaking quite easily since it is part of their natural programming.

In the early days of housebreaking, you want to make sure the puppy has a place to relieve herself where she feels safe -- a place that seems and smells familiar. First thing every morning, bring your puppy outside to the same general area. It is important to remain consistent throughout the process so your puppy can learn the habit.

Once your new puppy has successfully gone outside, it is impor-tant to reward the good behavior. It doesn’t have to be a big, loud celebration but a simple quiet approval or a treat can get the mes-sage across of a job well done.

And be sure not to punish your puppy for an accident or do any-thing to create a negative association with her bodily functions. Stay calm and assertive and quietly remove the puppy to the place where you want him/her to go.

As adults, those of us lucky enough to pass through our teen years without braces, we wonder why some are now seeking orthodontic treatment. In the past 20 years, there has been large increase in the number of adults wearing some form of braces. We are about to find out why. Enter Dr. Camille Walker, DDS, and owner of Walker Orthodontics in Murrayhill. As a high school student, Dr. Walker knew she wanted to be an orthodontist. After interviewing a number of people in the health care field, she focused her career choices and chose dentistry. By becoming an orthodontist, she would see her patients often and have the opportu-nity to develop relationships with the people she served. She learned that she could make a meaningful differ-ence in people’s lives and improve their self-esteem by resolving bite issues and creating beautiful, confident smiles. Growing up in rural Washington, Dr. Walker chose Washington State University where she received her degree in business while taking pre-requisites for dental school. She knew that she would one day own her own practice and she wanted to be ready. Immediately after graduating, Dr. Walker headed off to the University of Minnesota where she earned her Doc-tor of Dental Surgery. While register-ing for school, her father, who had driven with her to Minnesota, noticed a flyer for an information session on scholarships within the military and encouraged her to attend. She learned that the Navy provided scholarships in exchange for a com-mitment to active duty service. The

decision was easy. She now had complete freedom to focus on dental school without worry about the cost. Once she completed dental school, it was off to the Navy where she served three years as a general dentist and a commissioned officer. The Navy gave her the experience she needed to pursue specialty training in orthodontics. She received her Certificate in Orthodontics from Montefiore Medical Center, teaching hospital for Albert Einstein University in New York City. Completing her three-year residen-cy in 2011, she stayed on the East Coast and worked with other orthodontists to gain additional experience. As for the Navy, she earned the rank of Lieutenant Commander and transferred to the Naval Reserves and stayed until 2013 when she needed to devote more and more of her time to her orthodontic practice. From rural Washington to New York City, she developed a love of the big city but always planned to return to the Pacific Northwest. It was either Seattle or Portland and Portland won. She first moved to the Pearl District because of the vast array of incredible res-taurants and activities. Seeking her own practice, she soon found herself in Murrayhill where she met Dr. Mark Shoger, DDS. He had owned his successful Murrayhill practice since 1991 and was ready to retire and turn his practice over to a new generation. Dr. Walker and Dr. Shoger instantly hit it off. Dr. Walker purchased the prac-tice shortly thereafter and Dr. Shoger stayed on for several months ensuring a smooth transition. Dr. Walker’s practice is a mix of all ages. Forty percent of her patients are adults who have either been referred by their dentist or come seeking a better bite and an aesthetic smile. From her youngest patient at age seven to an 81 year old woman who needed her teeth aligned, it’s never too late. Dr. Walker sees huge changes in her patients in terms of better job opportunities and self-esteem. She isn’t sure if it’s because their teeth look and feel better or they just have more self-confidence. Correcting the bite is her goal and a beautiful smile is an incredible side benefit. Dr. Walker explains that teeth that don’t fit correctly can wear out over time and cause problems with the health of the gums.

A healthy bite and good tooth alignment can reduce problems with cavities and gum disease because straight teeth are much easier to keep clean. She has never had a patient regret getting their teeth corrected. Dr. Walker believes that systemic health and dental health are interrelated. She recommends that all children be seen by an orthodontist as early as age seven. Most children do not require

and will just be monitored until the time is right. For a select few, early intervention allows detection and treatment of issues such as impacted permanent teeth, problems with jaw growth or jaw alignment and harmful habits. It’s more effective and much easier to correct these issues when the teeth and jaw are still developing than later in life. Dr. Walker finds that adults are seeking better smiles in increasing numbers. She also finds that many adults who had braces early in life are returning for treatment as their teeth have shifted over the years. There are so many options for correcting teeth now that we no longer need to fear the metal mouth of yesterday. The stigma of braces is pretty much gone. to her practice and to become part of the amazing Murrayhill com-munity. She and her partner, Brad backpack and hike from Mt. St. Helens to Mt. Hood. Cycling favor-ites are Crater Lake and the scenic Painted Hills Bikeway loop. Both foodies, they indulge in the Portland restaurant scene with standby fa-vorites including Ken’s Artisan Pizza and Nodoguro on SE Hawthorne for sushi. At home they hit up the local farmers’ markets and relish time in the kitchen cooking together. When asked for a favorite travel destination, Dr. Walker’s face lit up as she described hiking the Inca Trail in Peru, traveling through Panama, Nica-ragua, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Thailand and all over Europe. These days it’s harder to be spontaneous as her schedule with clients is booked sometimes weeks out. But it’s okay. She loves her patients and wouldn’t have it any other way. Dr. Walker is Board Certified in Orthodontics – this is a voluntary certification that is held by only one of three practicing orthodontists. The process requires the orthodontist to demonstrate actual accomplishments in patient care with detailed case

reports on the treatment provided for a broad range of patient problems. It exemplifies Dr. Walker’s commitment to continue to keep abreast of the latest advances in patient care and to deliver the highest quality care available. As Dr. Walker beams her beautiful smile, she reminds me that it’s never too late to see an or-thodontist. America is in the middle of a pumpkin craze – pumpkin lattes, pumpkin beer, pumpkin ice cream, and more have become fall staples. We love all things pumpkin, yet every year millions of pumpkins are thrown away after Halloween. While obvious ways of repurposing pumpkins are in the kitchen or at a pumpkin chunkin’ event, this year try something new!

PuMPkin DéCor Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Instead of using a boring old cornucopia, reuse small pumpkins to create a unique, seasonal centerpiece. Paint cute designs on your pumpkins or paint them all over with a metallic hue for a more sophisticated look. Move aside, uninspired name place cards! Use a paint pen to write your guests’ names on tiny, décor-sized pumpkins to adorn each place setting. Small pumpkins are also great candleholders; remove the stem and cut out a shallow, circular cavity large enough to hold a tea light. To take your centerpiece to the next level, place the lit pumpkins in a glass bowl of water to create floating candles! It’s sure to impress your relatives come Turkey Day!

PuMPkin PrETTyPumpkins are rich in antioxidants and loaded with Vitamins A, C and E and zinc, so do your skin a favor and treat your face to a pumpkin facial! Add exfoliating brown sugar and a splash of milk to pumpkin puree and apply to your face for 20 minutes. It’s good for your complexion and smells great too. Relax further by taking a cue from Martha Stewart and making pumpkin pie potpourri. Prepare your pumpkin as you would for a Jack-o-lantern, except instead of a face, carve out holes all around the pumpkin’s sides. Then rub cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice on the inside of the pumpkin; place a lit candle inside and top with the lid to enjoy the sweet, spicy fragrance of fall for up to six hours.

PuMPkin PATCHPumpkins are a symbol of the harvest, so it makes sense to use leftover pumpkins to replenish the earth. Pumpkins enrich soil with zinc, iron and phosphorus, so they make excellent fertilizer and compost. If growing flowers is your fancy, use medium-sized pumpkins as planters. Fill a hollowed-out pumpkin a third full with potting soil. Place a hardy fall perennial inside, and add more potting soil and water. Enjoy your charming planter for several days and then plant it in the ground – pumpkin and all – so the decaying pumpkin can nourish your plant.

Whether it’s for décor, beauty or gardening, prolong the ambi-ence of autumn by repurposing those pumpkins!
