Choosing the Right Scissors or Shears for the Job

• To clean blades, wipe them aftereach use with a clean, soft cloth;

do not use water.

• Use the right scissors or shears for each job.

• Oil the pivot screw on scissorsand shears every few months.

Place a drop of oil on the screw,

open and close a few times and

wipe off excess oil.

• Never force a cut. If scissorscannot complete the cut, stop

cutting. Cut heavy materials

near the pivot, not near the

tips of the blades.

• Cut carefully; hitting metal orplastic objects can cause nicks

in the blades, damaging them

and minimizing their cutting

effectiveness.

• Handle carefully; dropping scissors can knock them out

of alignment, reducing cutting

accuracy.

• Store in a pouch or wrap in aclean cloth in a safe, dry place to

prevent accidents and damage.

• Do not sharpen pinking shearsby reworking the zigzag profile

of the teeth; a simple edge

grinding is sufficient.

• Blades should be sharpened ifthey do not cut evenly from

pivot point to tip. Check

a Lifetime of Performance

Properly cared for, qualityscissors and shears will last formany years. Here are a few tipson the care and use of Mundialscissors and shears.

Dressmakers’ Shears: • wide range of cutting tasks • able to cut through fabric of many weights • designed with bent or offset handles so that whatever is being cut

does not have to be lifted off the cutting surface • ensures the shears do not harm the cutting surface

Sewing Scissors: • light to medium cutting tasks such as trimming and clipping seams and loose threads

Embroidery Scissors: • light work that entails close detail • blades are slim and sharp with fine, precise points

Thread Clips: • quick snipping and tight seam stitch cutting • ring fits over the ring or middle finger and the clip rests in the hand • thumb and index finger work the spring action blades

Pinking Shears: • finishing seams with a resistant jagged edge • prevents the threads in the fabric from coming undone and loose • decorative appliqué cutting

Buttonhole Scissors: • opening buttonholes without stretching or damaging the stitches • features an adjustable screw so all buttonholes can be cut at an

even length

Appliqué Scissors: • trimming excess fabric or loose threads in layered applications • trimming sheer and delicate fabric in lace insertion • designed with one narrow and one wide blade; wider blade protects

the fabric underneath while the narrow blade makes the cut

Quilting Scissors: • cut easily through heavy quilting material • features stainless steel blades with a special knife edge
