Welcome

Hello mums!

It’s the Summertime again!! Yes mums it’s that time of year which either fills us with sheer panic on how we’ll get the kids through a whole six weeks off school or we’re whoop whooping at the respite from the school run chaos!

Well I hope you’re all well and enjoying your munchkins - I use that term loosely as my ‘little munchkin’ so to speak is running me ragged and already outwitting me, having tantrums very regularly and constantly launching anything that is to hand if he’s not happy! It’s made me realise how conditoned we become as adults though as he actually does all the things I’d love to do when my world isnt playing ball but I guess I also stopped all that at munchkin age!

Anyway - here we are! The Summer Holidays edition - all you need to help you survive the six weeks off - with What’s On to keep you in the loop and craft and activity ideas for a rainy or sunny day.

Kids don’t remember their favourite day of TV...

Despite adoring the autumn and winter and loving an excuse to wrap up warm and get outside, I have to say I’m loving this sunny weather we’re having – partly because sunshine makes life SO much easier when you have a toddler that wants to spend his entire existence outside!

What it made me realise though is that hours really can fly by and if you’re anything like me you’ll make a mental note that 3 hours ago you were going to put the washing machine on, pop to the shops, make a start on the tea and all the other chores we’d be on top of if we didn’t have the distraction of a two year old finding absolutely everything really exciting and wanting to share it with you.

I do like that he loves being outside but it brings some welcome challenges too - it makes cooking tea for instance a tad difficult when Jasper’s insisting I lie on the ground in the garden and help him to find wiggly worms – however I do know that in the blink of an eye these moments pass so I try and cherish them whilst abandoning any notion of any housework getting done.

Last week I made a point of doing as many things outside as we could for a couple of days and we hear it all the time but the simple things in life are often the best and cost us next to nothing!

So here’s a few ideas that my little man instigated that may come in handy over the summer...

Picnics... Having lunch or tea outside on a blanket was really good fun and ironically Jasper ate far better when he could up sticks and run off at his leisure than at the table. I didn’t even need to go into ‘mum mode’ either and have a massive buffet on show that I think entails a picnic – I put a few plates out and titbits on each and the lot was wolfed at my little mans leisure!

Mud Pies... No picnic is complete without a mud pie being made for it! We hear all the time how having such clinically germ free homes nowadays is playing havoc with our children’s immune systems – well problem solved! A dish, a big spoon, a mound of mud and a few pebbles as garnish and mud pie is most definitely on the menu with no additional charge for worms!

Bug Hunts... Talking of worms – this is most definitely the favourite adventure currently and you can forget Christmas – show Jasper a woodlouse and he’s in heaven bless him. Still being at the enthusiastic stage of life that seems to have eluded us grown ups a little, he jumps about and shouts that he’s excited and it’s all over a bizzy bee, a ladybird, an ant or even a Mr Skinny Legs as Peppa Pig named the spider in their house so we have to do the same. My main challenge here though is that he’s so loved up with the bugs I have to spend lots of time making sure he doesn’t actually kiss that bee that he wants to give a little peck to...

Cloud Watching... Lying on your back watching the clouds go by and making up stories for the shapes you can see is one of my favourites – I love seeing what Jasper sees that I haven’t perceived the same way, then hearing a little story unfold and spill out of his head (little being the operative word here) and don’t tell anyone but just the opportunity to lie down next to him and get some fun ‘us’ time feels like stolen moments!

Making Dens... Strategically placed sheets on the washing line can make a fab den – a word of warning though it’s not very conducive to having clean laundry if combined with the mud pie activity! Admittedly it wasn’t a den for very long as Jasper preferred running through the sheets and nearly pulling them off the line but hey ho – the den lasted a good 3.5 minutes!

Using our Senses... Again another opportunity to see what children notice that we overlook. We all know the phrase ‘Stop and smell the flowers’ as we often overlook all the beauty in life in our hurry - but just lying or sitting and seeing what you can see, smell, hear, touch and be careful with taste obviously, but this is a great way to see what interests little ones – a plane, a bee, a bird, different textures on their fingertips are all learning opportunities too.So it just goes to show you can have a whole afternoon packed full of mini adventures, great communication skills, fun and bonding without even leaving your garden.The funny thing is though - if an adult was to ask us what have you been up to today we’d probably say ‘oh not much’ They’d get an entirely different answer if they had asked the toddler though...

Exotic Zoo’s Scott Adams might spend his days surrounded by little monkeys but now it’s not just the little monkeys you send off to school (and Scott then visits to teach them all about wildlife and the environment!) now Exotic Zoo is home to some amazing monkeys all of their own.Introducing our 3 very special pygmy marmosets. The 3 adorable and very tiny marmosets are sisters that have just arrived from another education centre / zoo and will be making themselves at home in Exotic Zoo’s indoor rainforest at the education centre. They happen to be the smallest monkey in the whole world, weighing in at around 100 grams and measuring only 4-6 inches, and while they might be teeny tiny,

they can certainly hold their own! They will be bouncing around the canopy at Exotic Zoo hopefully being spotted by the students who are visiting to learn about the rainforest and the animals that live there.

Rosy and Ruby are our two common marmosets who have a slightly different story… they spent the first 7 years of their lives as pets, but after their elderly owner became ill, these middle-aged monkeys found themselves at a vets due to be put to sleep.

“After a last minute call to Exotic Zoo the lucky 2 monkeys were saved and found a new home at the centre!”

Having turned up scared and not in the best condition, the monkeys soon settled in and started to eat the finest marmoset diet including specially imported acacia gum, which forms part of their specialist diet.

These little characters will eventually find their forever home at Lakeside Animal Park in Priorslee who Exotic Zoo are currently working with to open a new educational wildlife park available to the community - with onsite classroom and animal therapy centre to work in conjunction with the Donnington wood site.

At Exotic Zoo we are currently finding new ways to keep our cheeky monkeys busy and happy. Ingredients300ml double cream250g Strawberries,stalks removed150g icing sugar

Easy Strawberry Ice Cream(without a machine)

There’s no better way to encourage your children to eat than to involve them in the preparation of their food as they absolutely love it - even my two year old wants to help to cook at the moment The guys at Green Fields Farm Shop offered these great ideas to try with the children this summer..

Blend the strawberries until you have a smooth puree.

Whisk the cream and icing sugar together until you have soft peaks then stir through the strawberry puree. You can mix in fully or partly for a ripple effect.

Put into a Tupperware container and into the freezer until set. Take out of freezer every few hours and mix with a fork.

Add indulgent lumps of berry goodness by adding whole or halved strawberries to the mix before freezing

Fun KebabsSuch a simple way to eat!

Simply cut up your chosen ingredients into nice big chunks and slide onto wooden skewers - obviously mind the spike!

No-Bake Summer Lasagne

I don’t know about you but I always end up cooking the same meals when I’m in a hurry so this recipe is great as it’s so quick and easy - no oven needed and it’d be easy to substitute the ingredients - especially if you haven’t had time to do your food shopping again today (too busy doing bug hunts and making mud pies again I suspect!) Enjoy!

Ingredients1/2 cup ricotta or soft cheese3 tablespoons grated Parmesan3 tablespoons olive oil2 teaspoons olive oilCoarse saltGround pepper8 lasagne sheets, broken in half1 small garlic clove 2 pints chopped tomatoes or passata2 large courgettes thinly sliced(or other veg of choice - about a pound in weight - all thinly sliced)1 tablespoon torn fresh basil leaves, plus more for serving

In a small bowl, combine ricotta, Parmesan, and 2 teaspoons oil and season with salt and pepper.

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook lasagne sheets according to package instructions and drain. Meanwhile, in a large pan, heat 2 tablespoons oil on a medium heat.

Method

Serves 4Preparation Time 25 MinsNo Cooking Time to add

Add garlic and tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring, until slightly broken down, about 3 minutes. Transfer tomatoes to a bowl.

Add 1 tablespoon oil and courgettes to pan and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring, until courgettes are tender, about 5 minutes.

Transfer to another bowl and stir in basil.

Place some tomatoes on four plates; top with a pasta sheet and small spoonfuls ricotta, courgettes, and more tomatoes. Repeat layering twice.

Top with remaining pasta and tomatoes. Garnish with basil.

There’s nothing like spending time as a family enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. You don’t even need to go far. Why not head out to the garden, light a fire in a fire pan and make yourself a homemade barbeque! You don’t even need to spend a fortune on food; the fun of cooking is what it’s about.Here are a couple of simple ideas to cook on your fire using minimal equipment....you can even save on washing up and eat your saucepan afterwards!!!!!! Take a pepper. Cut the lid off and scoop out the insides. Crack an egg and pour it into the pepper. Find a little spot in the coals of the fire and put the lid of your pepper back on. Mix it around every now and again (make sure you wear a heat proof glove!) and wait until your egg is cooked. Now take it off the fire and devour it, saucepan and all!!!! Delicious! What’s for pudding you say? Take an orange, cut off the lid. Scoop out the insides (mix the strained orange juice with some soda water for some make shift orangeade!) Fill the bottom 3rd with some chocolate muffin mix. Put the lid back on, wrap in foil and nestle into the coals of your fire. Leave for about 20 minutes and eat. Fresh hot chocolate orange muffins! 26 to 27 JulyAlice’s Adventures In WonderlandCome to Blists Hill Victorian Town dressed as Alice in Wonderland or another character from the much-loved book over the weekend of 26 & 27 July for an event based on the Victorian novel by Lewis Carroll.

Take part in the Hatter’s Mad Tea Party, join the Queen of Hearts for a game of croquet and follow a clue-led trail around the town to find the Cheshire Cat. Then watch cameo mimes and scenes from the book performed by costumed characters from the Kaleidoscope and Sundial theatre groups. There will also be hands-on activities for youngsters such as colouring Alice themed illustrations.

There will be a competition to find the best dressed person in a costume from the book. The judging will take place at the Tea Party and the prize will be a portrait by the Town’s photographer.

Home Farm Attingham is a working family that is also farm open to the public. As well as being able to look around the historic farm and feed our animals, visitors are able to visit the tearooms and try our home made cakes.We also have Merlin the robotic milking machine which is the only one in the country that anybody can come and see milking the cows all by its self!We are open every day in the local school holidays from 11am-5.30pm

Summer had just begun. Animals and insects scurried about, enjoying the summer sun. “Summer’s here! The best time of the year!” the Grasshopper sang. “Warm sun, lots of fun!” he added to his song.

A line of ants marched past the Grasshopper, carrying small seeds and bits of food. As they walked along, some crumbs fell to the ground. Before the ants could get them, the Grasshopper had eaten the crumbs.

The ant at the end of the line walked up to the Grasshopper. “We’ve worked very hard to gather this food,” said the Ant. “You should have helped us pick up what we dropped.”

“That’s what’s wrong with your summer song,” the Grasshopper sang. Then he said, “You’re always working. Summertime is for play, not work.”

“Summertime is for planning and gathering,” said the Ant. “It’s time for getting all the food we will need for the winter.”

“Winter is so far away, I think I’d rather go and play,” said the Grasshopper. He was about to hop off when the Ant stopped him.

“Wait! What about the food you took from us?” the Ant asked.

“Oh, yes. Thank you.” The Grasshopper pointed toward a field. “And over there is a whole field of wheat to replace your crumbs. I like cornfields better myself, but that might be too far for you to walk.”

And the Grasshopper hopped off to the cornfield. The Grasshopper quickly forgot about the Ant and leaped onto a cornstalk. A soft leaf gave him a bed. Above him, another leaf gave him shade.

And within reach, smaller, tender leaves gave him food. There was even an ear of fresh corn nearby. “Those ants can gather and work and store. I’ll just snooze right here and snore.” He fell fast asleep.

Meanwhile, the Ant lined the tunnels of his home with seeds and other foods. “When the snow is on the ground, we will be nice and warm in our nest. We will have plenty of food to eat and plenty of time to play,” thought the Ant.

All that summer, the Grasshopper watched the ants. When he saw them going to a picnic for crumbs, he hopped along to eat his fill. While they carried food back to their nest, he slept in his cornstalk bed.

Then one day, the Grasshopper heard a loud noise. The farmer was coming to harvest the corn! The Grasshopper jumped into the grass. “Close call, all in all,” sang the Grasshopper. “I just lost my bed and food!”

A line of ants was marching past and heard the Grasshopper. The Ant stopped. “The days are getting shorter, my friend. But there is still time for you to store food and find a winter shelter.”

The Grasshopper thought about the Ant’s suggestion that he store food for a second. “Not today, I’ve got to play,” he sang and hopped his way through the grass.

When he found a toadstool, he said, “This will put a roof over my head. So I’ll just eat later instead.” The Grasshopper had just fallen asleep when he heard a plop! The next thing he knew, his toadstool was falling over.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” chattered a squirrel above him. “My paws were so full of nuts that I dropped some. You can have them if you like.” The Grasshopper hopped away. “No, thank you. I don’t like nuts, no ifs, ands, or buts.” All throughout the fields and in the forests, he saw squirrels gathering nuts.

They chattered to one another, “I found more!” “Have you heard? This winter is going to be snowy!” and “I have a bunch of nuts, but I want to be sure. It will be a long winter!”

All this work was making it very hard to play, and to sleep. In the hay field, the Grasshopper found a warm, sunny rock. He was just settling down, when the ants began marching by again.

“You again!” he said to the Ant. “I thought by now you’d have enough. You can’t eat all that stuff!” The Ant smiled, but he did not stop to talk.

“It’s always better to have a little extra than not enough,” he called.

The Grasshopper frowned. The sun had moved, and the rock was cold. In the distance, the farmer was cutting hay. “Doesn’t anybody here know when to play?” he asked aloud.

He hopped off to the apple orchard. Most of the leaves were gone from the tree. But the Grasshopper found a few small apples on the ground. He munched on them until he was full.

Then he settled in for a nap near the root of the tree. The Grasshopper shivered. He looked around for a sunny spot, but the sun was already gone from the sky. “Someone needs to tell the sun that its working day is not done,” he sang unhappily.

The sun was one thing the Grasshopper didn’t mind seeing at work. With each day, though, it seemed to work less and less.

The ground seemed colder, too. One day, when the Grasshopper tried to nibble an apple, he found that it was frozen. “I don’t like my apple in ice,” said the Grasshopper. He was so chilly that it was hard to think of a second line to his rhyme. “Ice, nice, rice, mice. . . .”

The Grasshopper tried to think of something nice. “A warm place with lots of rice,” he sang in a shivery voice. He didn’t really like rice, but he was getting hungry. Then he thought, “Maybe I’ll visit my friends, the mice.”

The Grasshopper crept into the home of the field mouse family. It was warm inside. There was no sign of rice, but the Grasshopper was sure they would have

something else nice.“Thank you for visiting, Mr. Grasshopper,” said Mother Mouse. “I would invite you to stay, but all of my sisters and brothers are moving in for the winter. Isn’t that nice? Oh, here they are now!”

A crowd of mice rushed into the nest. It was nice to see them hugging each other. But the Grasshopper wanted the kind of nice that meant he had a place to live and something to eat. He was out of luck at the Mouse house.

The Grasshopper hopped back to the orchard. The ground was so cold that it hurt his tiny feet. “Where are those ants, now that I need them?” sang the Grasshopper.

Suddenly snow began to fall. It covered the Grasshopper. With a jump, he fluttered his wings. He had to get inside or he would freeze!

Hopping as fast as he could, the Grasshopper raced to the Ant’s home. “Is anybody home?” he called as he stepped into the tunnels.

“Why aren’t you out playing in the snow?” asked the wise Ant. The Grasshopper wanted to say that he had just come by for a visit. But he could feel the cold wind on his back.

Sadly, the Grasshopper sang, “I should have listened to what you said. Now I’m cold and scared and unfed.” It wasn’t his best song, but he hoped the Ant would understand.

The Ant did understand. But he wanted to be sure that the Grasshopper understood, too. “We got our food for the winter by working hard. If you stay with us this winter, you’ll have to work hard, too.”

The Grasshopper gulped. What if it was a long winter, like the one squirrel said? But then he remembered the ice and snow.“Your job here will be to sing for us. Every day.” Then the Ant laughed. “Because winter is our time to play.” In exchange for food and a place to stay, the Grasshopper entertained the Ants all winter long.

All that winter, the Grasshopper sang for the Ant and his huge family. And the next summer, the Grasshopper sang a song as he helped to gather food. “Summer work is slow and steady. But when winter comes, I’ll be ready!”

moral of the story...Living for the moment is fun and it’s much easier to enjoy what you are doing right now without thinking about what lies ahead. As we get older we learn that we sometimes need to plan for times of necessity.

A good example of this is that putting away your toys after you play with them keeps them nice and ready for the next time you want to play.
