Child Welfare Given a Helping Hand from Hirsch’s

Hirsch Pietermaritzburg was recently ap-proached to help those less fortunate in the Pietermaritzburg area. “PMB Child wel-fare was in dire need of a tumble dryer as cold weather caused a delay in dry-ing the children’s clothes. We managed to find them a refurbished tumble dryer,” said Hirsch PRO Victoria Laubscher. “Gen-erous customers often donate old appli-ances when purchasing a new one and PROs in store distribute to those in need. If anyone has an old appliance, they are welcome to bring it to Hirsch’s and we will distribute it”.

Treasure Your Friends As women we often take on more than we should. Most of us have full-time jobs, run households and take care of children. Some of us are lucky to have spouses who provide lots of support. But school-going children make so many demands on our time that we often have to rely on other people, sometimes the most unexpected of people, for help.

I am part of such a group – five friends who are all so different. Despite the differ-ences, our alliance is unquestioned and solid beyond reproach and I am eternally grateful for how each one enriches my life. Within every group of friends there needs to be a matriarch – someone so kind and gentle that you marvel at their capacity for kindness. Our beautiful Sally is one such gem – a nurse by profession and stay-at-home mum by choice.

Our other saint is young Gail. A Comrade’s runner and a mum who busily runs three different businesses.

I, thank goodness, bring a sense of ratio-nality to the ladies. I am very business-minded and see things logically for what they are.

This is directly contradicted by Margot and Lisa. Margot is our resident psychologist who will gently explain the rationale be-hind our wackiest thoughts and urge us to deal with these issues.

Last but not least is the lovely Lisa. At the age of 38, Lisa surprised us all with the ar-rival of young Jack – we can’t recall life before him now! Lisa is our resident party animal and karaoke singer who manages a busy household of cyclists. Who would ever have thrown these five women together? In nearly every way we are different but I am lucky to have en-countered and embraced these wonder-ful friends.

Terbodore distributes its coffee beans throughout South Africa to retail outlets, the hospitality industry and the individual coffee lover.

Speaking of coffee lovers, when Marian Macaskill started the business, the idea was to have a facility where customers could come and taste the coffee. An old tractor shed on the property was used for this purpose. The general public started coming for a cup of coffee and then wanted something to eat with the coffee. And so a chicken run was turned into a restaurant. The restaurant was opened in 2010 and is now open six days a week for breakfast and lunch (closed on Wednesdays). Since the roastery is situated at The Coach House in Curry’s Post, accommodation is also available (the Coach House was originally built as an overnight facility for the coaches en route be-tween Durban and Johannesburg). And when it comes to the actual coffee, Terbodore won the best Cappuccino for the Midlands, Pietermaritzburg and Underberg area in the Sunday Tribune Cappuccino competition. In 2011 they came second in the same competition. Apart from the usual blends, Terbodore offers a popular range of flavoured coffees such as French Vanilla, Amarula Cream, Dutch Chocolate, Hazelnut, Irish Cream, Kahlua Fudge, Car-amel Cream and English Toffee. The blended coffees are available in beans or can be freshly ground to suit the coffee machine used.
