Charitable Life• GiveITback rents or sells complete computer labs for schools or businesses because “IT belongs to everyone”. They also stock specialised accessories for those with dis-abilities. This includes “learnerboards” – keyboards specifically designed for younger children and/or those with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. Ekukhanyeni Special Needs School in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, was recently sponsored a fully equipped GiveITback lab valued at R160 000 by S.A. Airlink. The lab has Internet access, print servers, file servers, brand new workstations, learnerboards, educational software and maintenance built in. The lab also included the physical preparation of the class-room. The launch day on 17 May was a celebration of the opening of the lab, and the school’s way of thanking GiveITback and Airlink. Airlink and GiveITback are going to replicate this success in Nelspruit and look at other destinations thereafter.Contact: Jonathan Michael, 073 985 8738, [email protected].

Oscars As the owner of a small business, I watch with interest how other small enterprises develop. I discovered Oscars Butchery while glancing through the classifieds in the newspaper. Every week Oscars Butchery offered specials that were worth the visit to this well-kept secret in Havelock Road. A wide range and variety of meats on offer, as well as cooked meals, cheese and eggs almost made for one-stop shopping. The shop became so popular that expansion was necessary and Oscars slowly spread across a few buildings. Move forward a few years and Oscars have definitely pimped their pig! Roger and his brother have been in this business for many years, something originally started by their father. As with any successful business they are always reinventing themselves. Their range of cold meats, burgers, smoked cheese beorewors, ribs and posh ribs are always popular. Oscars products can be found in most grocery stores across KZN so you can enjoy that Oscars taste wherever you are. Oscars have now opened a second shop in Roberts Road as well as a restaurant and pub decorated in a rustic German style. Daily evening specials, like Rib and Chips on a Thursday for R35, or Home-made Pie and Chips are on the menu. The pie I ordered was full of superb, tasty and well-cooked meat. Offered on a Sunday is a good old-fashioned roast with all the trimmings. This includes starters (a selection of cold meats and salads), followed by rare roast beef, cauliflower cheese and plenty of gravy (a must-have for Dad as he has gravy on everything!) and a selection of desserts.

Contact: Oscars, Roberts Road, 033 – 342 2059.

Why Should I Go To Gym?

“Why would anyone go to gym?” was the question asked by an octogenarian re-cently. Truth is, in this lady’s young days life was a great deal slower and more physical just to get ordinary stuff done.

With more sedentary lifestyles and a busy world, exercise in some shape or form has become a “have to do”, not a “like to do” if we wish to have the best shot at ageing better.

Our bodies now produce stress hormones in response to much of our normal every-day lives and we don’t use them up by using our bodies. Not everyone likes exercise. In fact, some people actively dislike exercise. We all put petrol in our cars for no other reason than we don’t wish to run out of petrol and have to deal with the consequences. Filling up with petrol is not an emotional wow. We put in petrol because it has to be done. Exercise is human petrol. Just something that has to be done for a long list of rea-sons. Exercise takes so many forms and any form is better than none. However, the trick is to raise your heart beat high enough, for long enough, often enough to get the real ben-efit for heart, brain and other major organs.

The other important aspect is to develop muscle strength to strengthen bones, pro-tect joints and raise metabolism. Going to gym ticks all the boxes and makes walk-ing, gardening or doing housework easier. Curves is a facility specially designed for women and Curves works because it gives you a complete cardio and strength-train-ing workout in just 30 minutes three times a week at a time that suits you.

Breastfeeding-Friendly Hospitals in S.A.

Choosing a non-mother/baby-friendly hos-pital to give birth in, can have lifelong im-plications for your baby’s health! And now, according to the recent Tshwane Decla-ration of Support for Breastfeeding in South Africa, ALL public and Private Hospitals are to be Mother/Baby Friendly accredited by 2015! This means that all hospitals in S.A. need to implement and follow the ten steps to successful breastfeeding accord-ing to the Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI). The BFHI was developed jointly by the World Health Organisation and UNI-CEF in 1991 and is a global effort to pro-mote, protect and support breastfeeding through The Ten Steps to Successful Breast-feeding for Hospitals.

The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding for hospitals are:

• Have a written breastfeeding policy and routinely communicate this to staff. • Train staff to implement this policy. • Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding. • Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth. • Show mothers how to breast-feed and how to maintain lactation, even if they are separated from their babies. • Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breastmilk, unless medically in-dicated. • Allow mothers and infants to re-main together 24 hours a day, “rooming-in”. • Encourage breastfeeding on cue, whenever baby is hungry. • Give no dum-mies/pacifiers or artificial teats to breast-feeding babies (causes nipple confusion). • Refer mothers to breastfeeding support groups on discharge. The start that you and your baby have can make the world of difference to your baby’s health for life, so encourage the hospital of your choice to become baby-friendly!

Amla Bats for SMJSMJ Bever-ages South Africa re-cently ap-p o i n t e d H a s h i m Amla, the world’s top-ranked crick-et batsman, as its brand ambassador. The partnership will see Amla promoting all the soft drink brands manu-factured in South Africa. The partnership will also include collaboration on future product lines, as well as endorsing the full range of products manufactured by SMJ Beverages S.A. (Pty) Ltd.

Ismail Kajee, CEO of this leading global beverage manufacturer in South Africa said, “We are extremely pleased to have Hashim Amla become SMJ’s brand am-bassador. SMJ and Hashim share a com-mon, mutual desire to improve people’s lives and contribute to society. In addition to manufacturing truly great soft drinks with a great taste and unique value for money, SMJ Beverages takes to heart our mission to enrich people’s lives through unique corporate activities and to grow our company in unity with society. We look forward to collaborating with Hashim on a number of corporate social responsi-bility programmes around the country.” Hashim Amla said, “I am honoured, and excited, to have been appointed as the brand ambassador for such a global company. Chubby and Busta are great brands with strong roots in the West Indies, a region known for its relaxed and exciting approach, very much like South Africa.” Based in the West Indies, SM Jaleel & Co Ltd, the parent company of SMJ Bever-ages SA (Pty) Ltd, has long been a major sponsor of cricket over its 88 year heritage. The company, through its kids’ snack drink brand, Chubby, has made a substantial contribution to the development of youth cricket in the West Indies.

mr. FuntubblesSince I’m always looking for something different to do with my niece and nephew, the three of us gave mr. Funtubbles at Liberty Mall a whirl. My brother, the children’s Dad, joined us as well. mr. Funtubbles is situated in the entertainment area for kids at the restaurant zone of the mall and is enclosed, so can be used in all weather.

To make life easier for parents, a card is bought and loaded with credit. The kids can then go on each ride by just swiping the card. Kelsey and Judah started by spinning around on the carousel which turns at some speed.

Next it was on to the bumper cars where my nephew delighted in bumping into his sister! This was so much fun that they swiped their card again, dragged their Dad along and raced around the square with shrieks of delight - not for the faint hearted!

Next on the circuit was the Shooting Star which throws you up and down at vary-ing speeds. This was also popular, but I have to say for their Aunt sitting watching, I felt quite green! In between all these rides we had ordered and eaten brunch at one of the surrounding restaurants, so a ride on the Shooting Star assisted digestion!

The last ride we tried was the Tug Boat, which swings you back and forth. Being able to chat and catch up with my brother Robin with no interruptions from small voices was brilliant. In short, the young siblings had a ball and the old siblings got to catch up, which does not happen too often. So mr. Funtubbles at the Liberty Mall is a win win for all family members!

Piggly Wiggly Country Village

What started out as a humble farm stall, Piggly Wiggly has developed into one of KZN’s premier eat-shop-play destinations. This progress was recognised by others, when, on 24 March this year, Piggly Wig-gly was given an Eat In DStv Food Network Produce Award.

The Eat In DStv Food Network Produce Awards aim to acknowledge and cel-ebrate outstanding, independent South African producers for putting South Africa on the international food map with their integrity, passion and innovation.

These are producers (of which Piggly Wig-gly is one!) that deliver a consistently high quality product that is South African grown or developed using primary produce from S.A. Due care and consideration for both the environment and workforce are essen-tial criteria.

Of course, an outlet is a vital connec-tion between the producers and public, which is why the awards also recognise the stores, shops and markets for their vital role in the process.

Situated on the Highgate Wine Estate in Lions River, just outside of Howick, Piggly Wiggly Country Village is proving, once again, that the Midlands has it all. Gifted Children with Learning Difficulties

One group of children we don’t often consider are the gifted with learning disabilities. Gifted children are those with an excep-tionally high I.Q. They have high potential to achieve at school and yet they struggle to reach their full potential. They know that they are not achieving and this leads to further difficulties.

Common characteristics of children with high intelligence scores include: • Ability to think creatively and laterally. • Use of lan-guage and vocabulary is advanced. • Above average memory. • Ability to problem solve. • Always questioning. • Sensitive and with a strong character.

Some of the characteristics that accompany children with very high potential but with learning difficulties may include: • A low frustration thresh-old and low self-esteem. • High abil-ity in one area and frustratingly low abil-ity in another, e.g. exceptional skill in maths and poor comprehension skills leading to poor examination results. • Lack of organisational and motiva-tional skills. • Concentration difficulties. • Behaviour difficulties due to boredom. • An awareness of lack of achievement.

These children are often able to work logically through problems and complex ideas and gain a clear insight and under-standing and yet they find it very difficult to express their feelings and ideas either on paper or verbally. They often find it dif-ficult to comprehend what is being asked of them especially in tests and exams and fail to answer effectively.
