THERAPYWith the warm and fuzzy (or in my case, hot and sweaty) feelings of the festive season but a distant memory, the start to 2012 has been a fl urry of book covering and back-to-working. Thankfully I no longer know what is fashionable in a grade 7’s eyes when it comes to book cov-ering, so I escaped having to ensure this arduous task! Who would have guessed that my suggestions for funky wrapping paper could be SO last season? Apparently they are… And did anyone else’s child throw the baby out with the bath water? My daughter “recycled” last year’s perfectly good atlas – no, she did not keep it to re-use this year, she literally binned it in the paper re-cycling with the used books, sup-posedly accidentally…Oh the joys of raising a 12-going-on-18er. But Feb-ruary is the month of love not war, so I have declared a cease fi re with immediate effect. If you hate Valentine’s Day for all it represents and the blatant commer-cial extortion of couples in love, stop reading right now – I would hate to be held responsible for your nausea. I happen to luuurve February, as my husband always improves on Valen-tine’s Day each year. It’s a bit of a love fest actually, and not the way you think! Last year my friend Carla and I planned a special Valentine’s evening (dinner and live music), but if you’re a regular reader of Mum’s Mail, you’ll remember the disaster that it turned out to be…so I am re-ally looking forward to the 14th of February this year, as the pressure is off me! Not the girls’ turn to plan anything! So here’s to a romantic and mooshy Valentine’s month. It’s the one day of the year you can give and receive those nasty little white bears holding red hearts that declare “I love you with all my heart”! Eeuw!

Obesity Traps Children are born inherently ac-tive and yet we are surrounded by inactive children. This, along with poor dietary practices, has seen an increase in obesity and associated health issues in children. These health issues were previously not seen until adulthood - high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, elevated blood cholesterol levels etc. Today, about one in three American chil-dren is overweight or obese; nearly triple the rate in 1963. South Africa follows the same trend. Parents are not prioritising their children’s dietary and physical ac-tivity needs. We say we don’t have the time but we literally cannot af-ford to make ignorant choices for our children. As a result of the in-creasing obesity crisis our children’s generation can expect to die at a younger age than their parents. Obesity Traps: • Increased por-tion sizes. Twenty years ago a burger comprised about 333 cal-ories. Today it is 590 calories! • Poor food choices. Conve-nience meals are high in sugars, fats and salt and low in fi bre. Did you know French fries are the most common source of vegeta-ble consumed by children today? • Eating out more, fast foods, res-taurants etc. These are one-stop shops for calorie-dense foods. • Our children are moving less. One in four American children does not do any physical activity and four to fi ve hours a day is spent in front of the TV or computer. The American Heart Association recommends that children under 18 years should be getting at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day. Make better food choices and up the activity levels!

Prepare for Emergencies In every household at some time or another you will be faced with an emergency - whether a medical or criminal one. The best thing you can do is to prepare ahead for these emergencies.

Here are some things to do:

• Discuss with family members what to do in the event of an emergency and assign everyone a role (e.g. who would do CPR, who would phone the ambulance, who could drive an in-jured person to hospital etc.).• Make sure you have a well-stocked fi rst-aid kit that all members of the family including your domestic worker know how to use.• Have all relevant emergency num-bers clearly displayed next to your telephone.• In case anyone ever needs to give directions to emergency personnel, write down a few brief directions on how to get to your house with prom-inent landmarks (this is very impor-tant if you have a domestic worker looking after your children).• Make sure you have attended a ba-sic fi rst-aid and CPR course and keep it updated.• Find out what medical assistance you could expect from your medical aid and check who their preferred suppliers are. This may be helpful after the emergency when the medi-cal bills start arriving.• On your car make sure you have your medical aid stickers clearly displayed as well as any towing as-sistance. Being prepared may just help you panic less in the event of an emer-gency as you will know what to do.

Low Milk Supply and PCOS Some mothers who struggle with low or no breast-milk supply may have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) - although a third of PCOS suffer-ers struggle with oversupply! Most of the time when mothers have low milk supply, it is due to various fac-tors such as baby not suckling effi -ciently, scheduled feedings, topping up with formula without expressing, mother not eating/drinking enough etc. But we are seeing an increase in women with PCOS, which is thought to be diet and lifestyle related, and which can affect breastfeeding since it affects the hormonal system.

In a study done by Lisa Marasco (MA, IBCLC), half of the women with lac-tation failure suffered from obesity and 67% from infertility. Both are side effects of PCOS. Many doctors, including paediatricians, do not know much about breastfeeding or PCOS and can unintentionally give mothers wrong advice that can also contribute to low milk supply. So choose wisely. After baby’s birth, if the milk came in, PCOS may be due to a secondary issue. If the milk didn’t come in at all, it’s probably a primary issue. For the best possible outcome, start working on the problem immediately, before or during pregnancy. PCOS can cause too little breast tissue to grow to ful-ly support breastfeeding if nothing is done. You should see breast growth and “veining” on the breast during pregnancy. Ask your doctor about Metformin, Fenugreek or Goat’s Rue, which may help. Even if you are not producing enough breast milk, some breast milk is better than nothing at all, so don’t give up. There are ways to supplement your baby by still feeding directly from the breast while working on supply issues.

How the Internet Can Help Your Child

The Internet is a valuable research tool for school-aged children. How-ever, parents need to equip their chil-dren to use the Internet effectively as well as put in place some protec-tion mechanisms. Carolyn Holgate, MWEB Connect General Manager, says parents should look to put mea-sures in place to ensure their chil-dren have a healthy and benefi cial relationship with the Internet before giving them access. For example: • Agree times for Internet access with your children. • Place the home computer in a visible area of the house so you can easily and quickly see what your children are looking at. • Put software such as antivirus and Internet fi ltering software in place to protect your children. • Parents also need to show their children how to safely register for services online, how to protect their personal information and the ins and outs of belonging to social networks and creating online profi les.

Once that is done it’s important that parents teach their children skills on how to search for content. Apart from showing their children how to either limit results pages to South Africa or search internationally, par-ents can also teach children how to use Google Advanced Search and the symbols used to narrow a search down: • Inverted commas for an ex-act phrase. • A plus sign to ensure content has both words/phrases. • Star to fi ll in the blanks. • A minus sign to exclude a word or phrase.

Once parents have taught their chil-dren how to search, they need to teach them how to evaluate the ac-curacy of information they are look-ing at. For example, some of the articles on Wikipedia are factually correct and very well written, while others are not.

Educated Life

Special Parents Special education mums and dads should be given special thanks for all the extra things they manage to do for their children. Every mother is special but mothers of children with learning diffi culties are uniquely special. If you have a child who has a disability of some sort, you’re al-ways on the lookout for new and dif-ferent ways to help your child and to make your child’s life an easier and happier one. This means you seldom have time for yourselves.

Thank you mum and dad for supporting your child by:

• Putting your own interests to one side when helping with homework. • Caring enough when your child is ready to give up. • Be-ing the most important teach-er for your child. • Assisting in turning limitations into growth. • Having the courage to work with people who do not always have your child’s best interests at heart. • Dealing with comparisons and crit-icisms from family, friends and ac-quaintances who do not necessarily understand the value of differences. • Being able to guide and sup-port your child through his educa-tion until education can be man-aged alone. • Providing support and understanding through the minefi eld of social experiences. • Developing the strengths and nurturing the talents which shine through. • Having the strength to be at peace with who your child is and not to wish otherwise. • Being wise enough to let go when necessary so your child can meet his own challenges. • Creating a loving and supporting home. • Continuing to provide a home that supports the rest of the family without disabili-ties and allowing for their nurturing and growth.
