BNI Africa Middle East Continent Conference

BNI (Business Network International) is the largest word of mouth referral organisation in the world. It offers members the opportunity to share ideas, contacts and most importantly, business referrals. The mission of BNI is to help members increase their business through a structured, positive, and professional word-of-mouth programme that enables them to develop long-term, meaningful relations with quality business professionals.

The BNI Africa Middle East Continent Conference 2014 will be held in Durban from 11 to 16 August at the Durban Country Club, with a gala dinner on 15 August at the Hellenic Hall in Durban North. The conference will feature world-class speakers. All proceeds from the conference and the gala dinner will go to The Sunflower Fund. The Sunflower Fund’s main function is to grow the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) so that patients in need of a bone marrow stem cell transplant can search successfully for a suitable donor. To be able to help all patients the Registry needs to grow! To achieve this The Sunflower Fund creates awareness and educates donors and also pays for the costly blood test. To raise money for these tests they hold numerous fund-raising events throughout the year.

Healthy Life/Beautiful Life

What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)? OCD is among the most common psychological disorders. OCD is a type of anxiety disorder that effects 2 to 3% of the population. It can overwhelm a sufferer’s life, making them unable to work, socialise or enjoy family life. An obsession is an intrusive and recurrent thought or idea that seems beyond the person’s ability to control, for example, doubting whether you have locked the doors and windows or may contract a deadly disease. A compulsion is a repetitive behaviour (e.g. hand-washing) or mental acts (such as counting) that the person feels driven to perform. Compulsions are strategies that a sufferer will use to relieve the distress caused by the obsessions. Most compulsions fall into two categories: checking rituals and cleaning rituals. The obsessive thoughts or compulsive rituals often take up many hours in the day. For example; a person afraid of dirt may wash their hands over and over again. Typically the relief is only temporary and

the person with OCD realises that their thoughts and behaviours make no sense but they are compelled to do it anyway. Sufferers often hide their symptoms from family and friends due to embarrassment and shame and they are afraid to be seen as “crazy”. Sadly this is unnecessary as OCD responds well to treatment.OCD can be treated most effectively through a combination of psychotherapy, medication, group and family support. The

earlier the person gets help, the better their chance of being symptom free.

Women’s Gym Gives Back

Women-only gym Curves Pietermaritzburg has reason to celebrate twice over as it recently completed its move to new premises, and also marked another successful Curves Food Drive as part of a national initiative among participating gyms. Curves Pietermaritzburg, now in its 9th year, recently relocated to Maritzburg Arch in Chief Albert Luthuli Street. “Curves is all about improvement – improving women’s quality of life, self-esteem and even our services. The relocation is an exciting change,” said Carmen Haldane, owner of Curves of Pietermaritzburg. The donated food went to Abrina Esther House. All new members who made a donation of R200 with which food was purchased, joined Curves without paying the usual joining fee.

In its 16th year, the Curves Food Drive has globally collected and donated more than 34 million kilograms of food to thousands of needy institutions in a myriad of communities surrounding Curves clubs throughout the world. The Curves programme incorporates an aerobic and strength training workout in 30 minutes. The facility uses easy-to-learn hydraulic resistance machines that have no weight stacks to change or manage and are specifically designed for women. Join Curves Pietermaritzburg before 31 July 2014, and stand a chance to win 10 Thailand holidays and prizes worth R2.8million. Set up your weight-loss and fitness consultation now at Curves Pietermaritzburg to find out about claiming your share of the R2.8 million prize bonanza. Terms and conditions apply.

Educated LifeMiss Earth Finalist Gives

Back to Local Schools Kwa-Zulu Natal’s Miss Earth regional finalist Lara Botha donned her gardening gloves and got up to her elbows in compost in pursuit of the “crown with a cause” this week. The Westville beauty (23) donated 10 indigenous trees to the new Hayfields Primary School in Pietermaritzburg as part of her campaign in attempt to reach the final lineup. The aspiring conservationist carefully showed eager grade R learners how to plant and care for the trees. Joining in with the cause are composting specialists, Farmyard Organics who donated compost, kraal manure and mulch, all excellent growing mediums for trees. Anusha Rajpaul, the deputy principal at Hayfields Primary School expressed her gratitude to Lara and Farmyard Organics for their generosity. She said that the

project afforded the children an excellent opportunity to be involved in and learn from the tree planting process and at the same time will help to enhance the environment at Hayfields Primary School. Hayfields Primary was not the first school to benefit from the earthy beauty’s projects. With additional backing from Farmyard Organics, Lara planted 10 trees and built a vegetable garden at Kwamyeza Primary school in Mpumalanga Township in Hammarsdale last month and prior to that, a food garden at Lyndhurst Primary School in Kloof.

Tiny Life/Young LifeHelping a Mama Out:

How the Humble Refuse Bag is Feeding Families

The humble refuse bag has become the unlikely hero for approximately 100 previously unemployed women in KwaZulu-Natal. Thanks to the vision of Supa Mama founder Thina Maziya, hundreds of waste collectors now earn a weekly income that helps to feed their families. The competitively priced Supa Mama refuse bag uses recycled plastic to produce recyclable bin bags. Available to purchase in Spar, Shoprite/Checkers, OK Foods, Game and other Masscash stores around KZN, buying the Supa Mama refuse bag means shoppers are ensuring work for hundreds of women and saving 5 tonnes of waste from reaching landfill each week. Maziya’s innovative business model allows her to cut out the middleman and deal directly with the ‘Mamas’, ensuring she is able to pay them the best price for their recycling efforts. “We realised that the Mamas were walking far to collect their plastic, and could not carry the waste collected over long distances, so we set up collection points around the province to assist them in increasing their volume. We’ve also set up a safe SMS weekly payment system via Absa CashSend so our Mamas don’t have to carry cash,” said Maziya. Supa Mama aims to provide work for over 500 Mamas, and will look to start a Mama-owned fleet of trucks to service the growing logistical needs of the firm. “We could set up a logistics team, but we want to give the Mamas the opportunity to grow with us,” said Maziya. Read more about the Supa Mama story on www.supamama.co.za or find Supa

Mama on Facebook: Supa Mama.

Blue Marlin Hotel

Free Holidays for Children

The 120-room Blue Marlin Hotel is idyllically situated overlooking the Indian Ocean in Scottburgh, just 40 minutes from Durban.

The hotel and restaurant incorporate the finest amenities and state-of-the-art facilities, while still maintaining a homely atmosphere. There is access from the hotel onto the beach and children love the super-tube and mini golf.

Blue Marlin is now being totally renovated to a level which will meet international resort standards, and this multi-million rand upgrade will enable the Blue Marlin to provide first class accommodation, while continuing to offer a family-friendly hotel with that personal service for which it is renowned.

The first phase of the upgrade is complete and includes improvements to the

bar, dining room, swimming pool area, children’s play room and games room. Phase 2 will start later this year and will focus on upgrading bedrooms Special offer for Mum’s Mail readers: Blue Marlin is running a promotion to give guests a chance to see the new renovations before they complete the refurbishment of the rooms. Children 12 and under stay and eat for free until the end of September (one free child per adult paying normal tariff, sharing a room). A deposit is required to confirm bookings. When booking please tell them you are a Mum’s Mail reader to qualify.

My family spent a weekend at the Blue Marlin recently and we loved the newly revamped entertainment and lounge areas. The kids’ play area is another win! We look forward to going back to see the end result of the massive room revamp that is being undertaken.

Tutu by Bianca Bianca Mantzios’ daughter turned one recently, and she wanted to make her birthday special and dress her up. She went hunting on the Internet for some first birthday ideas and came across a tutu that she fell in love with. She made the tutu for her daughter.

Then a friend’s daughter and Bianca’s nephew had birthdays, so she made a tutu for the friend’s daughter as a gift and a t-shirt with a train and her nephew’s name on it for him. Bianca’s family and friends loved the tutus and t-shirts she made and encouraged her to turn it into a business, as she is a stay at home mum. And so Tutu by Bianca was born.

“I enjoy making tutus and there is such a variety out there. I now make Petti tutu skirts as well,” said Bianca.

You can order your tutu directly from

Bianca and they are also available at Play Days in Pietermartizburg.
