Participating paddlers obtained sponsor-ships per mile covered. All funds raised go towardsawareness,educationand therecruitment of potential bone marrowstem cell donors onto the South African BoneMarrowRegistry,inturngivinghopetopatientsdiagnosedwithlife-threateningblood disorders such as leukaemia. Monthsofseriouspreparationinpaddlingand running, as well as mental training,paidoffasthepaddlersvictoriouslycrossedthe finish line. Such physical conquestsunderpin the ethos of theMiles4Marrowcampaignwhichupholdsthat“mostthingsin life cannot be done alone”. Nottingham Road Fuel and Gas owner,Steve Bridgeford is doing his bit to clean up roads in theMidlandswitha recyclinginitiativestartedinOctober2015. Stevewantedtogivebacktothecommunityandhesawasimilarinitiativeonlinewhichsparked the idea. The idea is that for every bag filled with rubbish that is handed in,Steve gives away a litre of paraffin. Thisproject has encouragedpeople, especiallychildren, to pick up rubbish from the street in exchange for the paraffin. Children areselling or bartering paraffin to others tomake some money. Nottingham Road Spar also got involvedand is handing out cans of jam and fruitwith each bottle of paraffin. Since theprojectbegan, theyhavecollectedalmost 2000bagsofrubbishasofFebruary! Toaddtotheincentive,thechildwhohas
brought in the most bags of rubbish at the end of the month gets a cellphone. And overChristmastheygaveawayamountainbikeandacellphonetothechildwhohadcollected the most rubbish since October.
