Dr Lal PathLabs is focus-ing on “inorganic gro-wth” to expand its foot-
print across India, particularlyin the southern and westernregions where the diagnosticschain has little presence.
Inorganic growth arises fr-om mergers or takeovers ratherthan an increase in the compa-ny's own business activity.
The company’s strategy co-mes as the sector faces a tem-porary slowdown owing todemonetisation and increasedcompetition. Its other initia-tives include value-added ser-vices to customers, such as thecollation of test results of last10 visits and a focus on pre-ventive healthcare checks.
Seventy per cent of Dr LalPathLabs’s business comes fr-om north India and around 15
per cent from the east. Its busi-ness in south and west India islimited, and the company isdrawing plans for expansion inthe two regions through acqui-sitions. “We continue to look atinorganic growth, and our teamsare working very hard on that,”said Om Manchanda, chief exec-utive officer, Dr Lal PathLabs.
“Our presence in south andwest India is not consumer fac-
ing. It is B2B focused now, thatis we pick up samples fromhospitals and send it to our labin Delhi. We will look at inor-ganic growth in the south andthe west to increase our foot-print,” Manchanda said. Dr LalPathLabs is the oldest patholo-gy lab chain in the country.Currently, it has one central lab,in Delhi, and 179 laboratories, most of them in north and east
India. “We have built this busi-ness organically and will con-tinue to focus on that,” he said.
A second central lab will belaunched in Kolkata in Sep-tember, and another one inLucknow by the end of 2018.
Manchanda said his teamswere also working to increasethe number of hospital man-agement contracts, sensing abig growth opportunity fromthe segment. Currently, it hascontracts with 22 hospitals acr-oss the country. “Lab manage-ment contracts are not a way oflife in healthcare. But over aperiod of time, it will becomeone. It is a large opportunity forus,” he added. Manchanda saidthe business faced a temporarydip in the third quarter of 2016-17 following demonetisation. While in the first two quartersthe business grew by over 20per cent, it slowed down in thethird quarter.
