According to a statement of the ministry of power, a total of 13,174 villages have been electrified under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojna. RIL may dethrone TCS as India’s most-valued firm BS REPORTER Mumbai Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Indus- tries (RIL) could overtake Tata Consul- tancy Services (TCS) as India's most- valued company as early as Friday (April 7). Currently, the difference in the market capitalisation (m-cap) between the two companies is only 1.1 per cent, or ~5,206 crore. With shares of RIL showing strong momentum, thanks to the optimism around its telecom foray, and the outlook for technology stocks dimming due to a stronger rupee, market players expect RIL to pip TCS in the next few trading sessions. LS passes Bill to make excise Acts compliant with GST PTI NewDelhi The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed a Bill that would ensure continuance of levy of excise on petroleum products and abolition of cess on some other items following goods and services tax roll-out from July 1. The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2017, seeks to amend the Customs Act, 1962, the Customs Tariff Act, 1975, the Central Excise Act, 1944, the Finance Act, 2001 and the Finance Act, 2005. Google offers grants worth $8.4 mn to 4 NGOs PTI NewDelhi Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, on Thursday announced grants of $8.4 million to four non- governmental organisations (NGOs) offering technology-based learning solutions in India . The NGOs include Learning Equality ($500,000), Million Sparks Foundation ($1.2 million), Pratham Books StoryWeaver ($3.6 million), and Pratham Education Foundation ($3.1 million). They will receive the grant for two years to expand and scale the work they are doing. Office space leasing up 8% in Jan-March: CBRE PTI NewDelhi Office space leasing rose by eight per cent during the first quarter of 2017 at nearly eight million sq ft in eight major cities — Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata and Kochi, according to property consultant CBRE. Spending on PCs, phones to hit $600 bn: Gartner PTI NewDelhi Consumer spending on devices like cell phones and personal computers (PCs) is expected to grow two per cent to about $600 billion this year, from $587.2 billion in 2016, as they opt for new gadgets at higher average selling prices, research firm Gartner on Thursday said. The spending is expected to rise further to $627.16 billion in 2019, Gartner said in a report. However, shipments of PCs, ultra- mobiles and mobile phones are projected to be flat this year at 2.3 billion units compared to 2016. RBI household inflation survey sees prices rising PTI Mumbai The Reserve Bank’s latest survey on households' inflation expectations has found a majority expect prices to go up in the June quarter for all products. Around 74 per cent of the respondents expected general level of prices to increase by June, with about half of them saying prices will rise at more than the current rate across all product groups. ANEESH PHADNIS Mumbai,6April D r Lal PathLabs is focus- ing on “inorganic gro- wth” to expand its foot- print across India, particularly in the southern and western regions where the diagnostics chain has little presence. Inorganic growth arises fr- om mergers or takeovers rather than an increase in the compa- ny's own business activity. The company’s strategy co- mes as the sector faces a tem- porary slowdown owing to demonetisation and increased competition. Its other initia- tives include value-added ser- vices to customers, such as the collation of test results of last 10 visits and a focus on pre- ventive healthcare checks. Seventy per cent of Dr Lal PathLabs’s business comes fr- om north India and around 15 per cent from the east. Its busi- ness in south and west India is limited, and the company is drawing plans for expansion in the two regions through acqui- sitions. “We continue to look at inorganic growth, and our teams are working very hard on that,” said Om Manchanda, chief exec- utive officer, Dr Lal PathLabs. “Our presence in south and west India is not consumer fac- ing. It is B2B focused now, that is we pick up samples from hospitals and send it to our lab in Delhi. We will look at inor- ganic growth in the south and the west to increase our foot- print,” Manchanda said. Dr Lal PathLabs is the oldest patholo- gy lab chain in the country. Currently, it has one central lab, in Delhi, and 179 laboratories, most of them in north and east India. “We have built this busi- ness organically and will con- tinue to focus on that,” he said. A second central lab will be launched in Kolkata in Sep- tember, and another one in Lucknow by the end of 2018. Manchanda said his teams were also working to increase the number of hospital man- agement contracts, sensing a big growth opportunity from the segment. Currently, it has contracts with 22 hospitals acr- oss the country. “Lab manage- ment contracts are not a way of life in healthcare. But over a period of time, it will become one. It is a large opportunity for us,” he added. Manchanda said the business faced a temporary dip in the third quarter of 2016- 17 following demonetisation. While in the first two quarters the business grew by over 20 per cent, it slowed down in the third quarter. Dr Lal PathLabs eyes growth via acquisitions After 27 years, Paes dropped from Davis Cup squad PRESS TRUST OF INDIA Bengaluru,6April Ace tennis player Leander Paes was on Thursday dropped for the first time in 27 years from India’s Davis Cup squad, as non-playing captain Mahesh Bhupathi picked Rohan Bopa- nna instead for the tie against Uzbekistan. The Asia/Oceania Zone Group I tie begins here on Friday. Bopanna will pair up with Sriram Balaji in the sec- ond round doubles tie. Bopanna is ranked 24th in the world, 29 spots above Olympic medallist and multiple Grand Slam winner Paes (53rd). Ramkumar Ramanathan will spearhead India's singles chal- lenge in place of injured Yuki Bhambri. Justifying his decision to pick Bopanna over Paes, Bhupathi said the Bengaluru lad is serving and seeing the ball well and also had a good start to the year. "Yeah, like I said the conditions obviously are very quick here. Rohan is serving well... That was the basis of the decision," Bhupathi said. Paes, who made his Davis Cup debut against Japan in 1990 at Jaipur, has been dropped from the Davis Cup team on form — or the lack of it — for the first time in nearly three decades. Bhupathi said it was a tough decision to drop his one-time doubles partner. When asked if it was end of the road for Paes, Bhupathi responded in the ne gative. “Not at all, I made it clear to everyone involved, including Leander, that this is by no means the end of the road. His being in the team is invalu- able, the experience, the ener- gy he brings to Davis Cup ...,” he said. Fight against corruption will continue: Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the fight against corruption and unaccounted money would continue. “C orruption and black money have destroyed Indian democracy, eating into it like a termite. But, due to your blessings, the fight aga- inst corruption and black money will continue,” Modi said at an event in Sahibganj. During his interaction with some local youths, the Prime Minister said the new genera- tion wanted to work with hon- esty and it was a good indica- tion. Pointing out that it would be 75 years in 2022 since India got the Independence, Modi said if every person in the country took a step ahead in all these five years, then the country would move at least 1,250 million steps forward towards development. Modi, who symbolically gave away a few smartphones to sakhi mandals (self-help groups) as part of the Raghubar Das government's decision to give 100,000 smartphones to SHGs, said he was surprised when he got the right answers from the vil- lagers of remote areas about the usage of smart phones. — PTI, Jharkhand Dr Lal PathLabs 8 REST OF THE NEWS MUMBAI | FRIDAY, 7 APRIL 2017 1 > STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA LIMITED Bhilai Steel Plant Bhilai Steel Plant Bhilai Steel Plant Bhilai Steel Plant Bhilai Steel Plant 1) Advt.No. B 1) Advt.No. B 1) Advt.No. B 1) Advt.No. B 1) Advt.No. B SP-03/ P-03/ P-03/ P-03/ P-03/ 17-1 7-1 7-1 7-1 7-18, Dt. 0 8, Dt. 0 8, Dt. 0 8, Dt. 0 8, Dt. 06/0 6/0 6/0 6/0 6/04/20 4/20 4/20 4/20 4/2017 Bhilai - Dist.
