McDonnell Creek Schoolto Celebrate 100 Years

October 19 2013 sees the celebration of McDonnell Creek State Schools’ 100th birthday.

Since opening in 1913 the school has gone through three name changes, commencing with Macdonalds Creek State School before changing in 1915 to McDonnells Creek State School to conform with the spelling of the creek and railway station.

In the 1990s it was modified to McDonnell Creek State School however the Department of Environment and Heritage were able to confirm that the area and school is named after Henry King MacDonnell from MacDonnell solicitors fame, and when officially recorded the ‘a’ had been left out.

The school boasts a number of high profile students, the most famous being the late Tom Pyne who joined the school in 1940 and later become the Chairman of the Mulgrave Shire and later the Mayor of Cairns.

The school is located 17 kilometres south of Gordonvale on the highway and is currently home to 24 Students from prep to year seven, including some from as far away as White Rock. These students are supported by 8 teachers and support staff.

Saturday October 19th is the big day, commencing with markets in the morning from 8.30am and entertainment from local clubs and community organisations throughout the day.

There will also be many photos and memorabilia on display. A book entitled Celebrating 100 years of Community Spirit will also be on sale during the day.

This is a special event for McDonnell Creek State School and the local community and everyone is invited the help celebrate a wonderful achievement.

Gordonvale skaters put the new Kenrick BMX and Skate Park to the test on September 12 at the official opening of the upgraded facility for Cairns' southern residents.

Division 1 Councillor Steve Brain officially launched the new look park with a free barbecue, visit from the Cairns Taipans, a skate competition, "shoot the hoop" challenge and music by DJ KDogs.

Cr Brain said the much-needed upgrade to Kenrick Park was a result of extensive community consultation following recommendations in Council's Skate and BMX Strategy.

"Last year, Council adopted a region-wide Skate and BMX Strategy, which identified a lack of skate and BMX facilities in the south and highlighted Kenrick Park as a Priority 1 project," Cr Brain said.

“Council added seven new concrete freestyle skate and BMX elements plus new seating to Kenrick Park, some of these elements include a spine ramp, quarter pipe pieces and a 45 degree radius bowl."

French born Gordonvale local, Margot Lodzinska-Detourbet is an experienced French Teacher and Tour Guide who lived in Paris for 20 years.

September has been an eventful month for Gordonvale State School with three sign unveiling events highlighting the genuine partnerships the school has with community organisations.

On the Sheppard Street side of the school oval, Curtis Pitt, Member for Mulgrave; Councillor Steve Brain and community members joined Gordonvale State School and partner agencies to celebrate the culmination of two Excelsior student projects.

The aim of the Excelsior Program’s O’Leary’s Creek Restoration Plan is to restore O’Leary’s Creek as much as possible back to its natural state.

One of the steps in achieving this was to increase the public awareness of the presence of O’Leary’s Creek with the underlying objective to encourage a more caring attitude towards our creek. Both of the student projects did just this.

With the assistance of the Mulgrave Settler’s Museum and other community members, the history of O’Leary’s Creek was researched by Year 7 students, Summer Wiley, Abbey Smart and Kelsie Gammie.

This resulted in a sign being erected on the Sheppard Street side of the school oval highlighting some of the historical events surrounding O’Leary’s Creek. The students discovered the uniqueness of the creek through its colourful history.

Excelsior student, Soraya Houghton assisted by Matt Birch, Land Management Officer from Cairns Regional Council and Lisa O’Mara, Natural Resources Assistant from Mulgrave Landcare, undertook a weed study of O’Leary’s Creek.

This investigation resulted in the production of an educational sign which was erected in the school grounds beside the history board.

Another Gordonvale State School student, Satria Curmi, identified the Green Patch, a popular local recreational spot as a high litter area. Through working with Cairns Regional Council and Mulgrave Landcare, Satria designed a sign to develop a community understanding of the need to respect and care for the Greenpatch.

All three projects demonstrate the great outcomes that can be achieved through working with organisations from our local and wider community.

The Herberton tin fields of the early 1880’s required a port for export of the mined tin and wolfram (also known as tungsten, a well sort after metal). Led by pioneer Edwin Crossland, Redbank and Edithvale, soon became bustling communities to service this need. Edithvale comprised of stores, cottages, brickworks and a kiln run by John Greenwood. The packers, with their teams of mules, carried goods which have been brought from Cairns to Redbank landing by steamboat. The packers journey took them past Nelson (now Gordonvale), Alley’s Riverstone Hotel and Blackwell’s Hotel at the foot of the range, then over the range via Robson’s track (roughly, the Gillies Highway), to Boar Pocket and eventually to Herberton. On the return trip, they carted tin and wolfram for export down this rugged and treacherous Robson’s track, fending off hostile aborigines and competitive packers from other areas. The work was hard and dangerous and on one trip, August (known as Gus) Hoffman, lost horse and goods over the tracks edge.

August and his wife Ernestine Hoffman and their 3 daughters and friends emigrated from Germany in April 1883. They travelled on a royal mail ship, sailing at 10 knots through the Suez Canal to Batavia (Dutch East Indies) and then on to Brisbane. They caught a coastal trader and arrived in Cooktown firstly, then decided to travel south near Cairns. They rowed up the Barron River to Smithfield. The Smithfield settlement had almost become uninhabited because of the relentless flooding, so they all moved to Cairns, where there 4th daughter was born. Sometime over the next year they moved to Packers Camp, Edithvale (near Redbank) where August became a packer.

Gus and Ernestine had two more daughters a total of 6 and they were very proud of them all. Ernestine taught all her daughters to play at least one musical instrument, they attended Black Fellow’s Creek School (now Hambledon State School) and the youngest daughter attended Gordonvale State school in 1903.

Gus enjoyed a great reputation as a pack horse teamster by the other pioneering families in the district and all the Hoffman girls helped their father maintain his teams upon his return home. The three older girls, particularly Martha who was capable of controlling her own team of mules, made many trips over the range to Herberton. Gus would not allow bad language in the camps when his daughters were with him and imagination easily paints a picture of what this life might have been like for the girls. Not only were they performing the difficult manual tasks, there was bread to bake and stray mules to find.

Unfortunately, Gus 50 met his death after a being thrown from a horse and then kicked, paralysing him from the shoulders down. He was buried at the Gordonvale cemetery on 3rd January 1907. Ernestine and her daughters kept the pack-horse business in operation for a time afterward. His youngest daughter Lena, cared for Ernestine in her late years at Tolga, where she died on 9th January 1928. She is buried in front of Gus at Gordonvale Cemetery.

Queen’s Guide Award WinnersMonday night, July 1st 2013, saw three Gordonvale District Girl Guides receive the Peak Achievement in the Youth sections of Guiding by receiving the Queens Guide Award.

Katelyn Chalk, Chantelle Gaskon and Marlee Kruger were presented at Government House Brisbane by Governor Penelope Wensley along side 15 other Guides throughout Queensland watched on by their families, leaders and other Guiding members.

The Queen’s Guide Award is the peak achievement award for youth members of Girl Guides Australia. The Award is recognised in the community, and thus it is expected that recipients uphold the standing of the Award in everything they think, say and do.

The award criteria comprises of 7 challenges based on the fundamentals of Girl Guides, an interest to develop and extend and a Focus Challenge in which is presented to the Girl Guides of Qld Youth Awards committee.

Gordonvale recipients selected the Outdoors Focus and the Special Design Focus undertaking water expeditions, and camping weekends completing their specified criteria and achieving the Trefoil 3 level.

The girls are now extending their role within the Guiding community and encourage any girls who are looking for that extra challenge to consider Girl Guides.

Oh what a night it was, in late August in 2013. Gordonvale celebrated student talent and achievements, cultural heritage and all things Gordy on 28 August.

The VIVD festival has traditionally been an arts festival, however, 2013 was bigger and better with the entire school getting involved.

The hall was chock-a-block full of staff and stalls from the Science and Math Departments with everything from chickens, bees and honey, to a forensic lab, parachute making, lego robots and bottle rockets!

Over in M Block there was storytelling in 'The Story Corner' with thanks form students and staff from the English Department.

The Indigenous Leaders of Tomorrow had boomerang painting, hospitality students cooked and brewed up a storm with help from the staff from the Special Needs Department.

The HPE staff had visitors eagerly trying to out-do one another with their fitness tests with the leader board proudly displaying the physical feats of the competitors, Whilst the Art Gallery was filled with the amazing work of our students from years 8 through to 12.

It wasn't just the work of our high school students we were displaying. Over the last couple of weeks we have been lucky enough to host year 6 and 7 students from Gordonvale State School who had been coming and working on projects for VIVID.

There were intergalactic travel ads, Chinese lanterns, and some absolutely amazing Japanese cuisine.

A massive congratulations goes out to those year 6s and 7s who participated and who came on the night to showcase their great efforts.

Also throughout the night the stage was ever filled with performance after performance from out outstanding students.

The evening was started with a bang with dancers from the Torres Strait Islander dance troupe wowing the audience with their traditional pieces.

What followed was a feast of drama and music performances with the choir, stage band, solos and duets, a variety of gut-busting hilarious drama skits, our very own Psycho Circus, and never too far from the spotlight our Indigenous Dance Troupe who closed the night in style. It truly was an amazing evening, and we are so proud to have seen our students rule the night with their bravery to stand up in front of an audience and perform to such a high standard.

Not taking away from those students who helped through the day and night either running stalls or helping teachers, to simply being there to be a part of the atmosphere.

As always, thank you must go out to the teachers who put weeks and months of effort into preparing for the evening and ensuring it was a smash hit that will be hard to top next time!
