2014 sees the 99th anniversary of the immortal landing of
Australian and New Zealand Forces on Gallipoli and plans are well
underway for a huge 100th commemoration ceremony in 2015.
For anyone keen for an early start at this years’ Anzac
commemorations in Gordonvale will commence at 6am with a
parade assembly beside the cenotaph in Norman Park, followed by a
breakfast at 6.30am in the RSL Hall where all service and ex-service
personnel are invited to attend.
For those who need a sleep in the second March and Parade will
commence at 9.30 am with people from the different organisations
assembling outside the Gordonvale Primary School in Shephards
Street at 9am. At 9.30am the contingent will march to the Cenotaph
in Norman Park, via Shephards George Street, Cannon Street,
Norman Street and entering the Park via Gordon Street. Roads in the
centre of town will be closed from 9am until 11.30am.
This year will see many current serving and ex-serving members of
the defence force marching alongside students from Gordonvale
State High School and primary school as well as members of the
emergency services. Once at the cenotaph a number of people will
address the parade, followed by a wreath laying ceremony. After the
parade everyone is invited back to the Gordonvale RSL for a get
together. Food and drinks will be available on the day from the RSL.
Commemorative Merchandise is available for purchase from the
Gordonvale RSL Sub Branch with more lines becoming available in
the near future. Volunteers associated with the Sub Branch will be
visiting local shopping centres in the lead up to ANZAC Day to assist
in the fundraising efforts.
Don’t forget that meals are available from the RSL on Friday nights. In
the lead up to ANZAC Day the Gordonvale RSL will once again this
year be holding its annual ANZAC Dinner on Saturday the 5th of April
at the RSL Hall in Gordon Street. The Guest speaker for this event will
be Brigadier George Mansford. This event kicks off at 6pm with pre
dinner drinks and guests are asked to be seated by 6.30pm for a 7pm
start. Dinner will be a three course alternate drop meal. Cost of the
evening is $50 per person and tickets are available by emailing the

50th Anniversary MemorabiliaGordonvale State High School is seeking memorabilia for the
50th anniversary celebrations. If you have anything that you
think would be of interest, please bring it to the High School
office. Make sure you have your name on all items that are
brought in so that they can be returned to you. Examples of
memorabilia could include: school uniforms, report cards,
programmes from events such as Speech Nights, musicals and
art exhibitions, old school magazines, badges, subject note
books, old text books, photos from your school days etc.
In 2015Gordonvale Highwill be celebrating its 50 yearanniversary.
In the lead up to the celebrations, there will be a profile of a student
and/or teacher (past or present). This month the past student is Jane
Porta (nee Gregory) who was in the first year 11 class in 1965.
Kevin Murgatroyd was one of the first teachers at the 1965 GSHS
campus. In 1963 I commenced secondary school as a sub-junior
student at the then Top High at the Gordonvale Primary School.
We were the last class to complete Scholarship (Year 8) which I did at
Hambledon State School and the first class to begin secondary
studies at Gordonvale. It was all very exciting for both students and
staff. The move up to the High School for our junior year felt very
special and the fact that we were always the oldest in the school
made us feel quite important.
Friendships made have stood the test of time and made schooling
fun- except for discipline which involved a bucket, a pair of pliers and
a field of sensitive plant.
My favourite subject was English where we tortured Shakespeare’s
plays in an effort to become actors! Lunch time basketball games
became a ritual with everyone getting a chance to play because of
the small numbers of students.
Swimming lessons at the Greenpatch were an exercise in crowd
control for the teachers and a trip to Green Island was a wonderful
but rare event. After leaving Gordonvale High, I attended the Kelvin
Grove Teachers’ College and graduated as a Primary School teacher
in December 1968.
I commenced teaching in 1969 at Yungaburra State School then onto
Gordonvale State School in 1970. In 1970, I married John Porta, a local
cane farmer and together we have raised two sons and a daughter
and have become doting grandparents to our five granddaughters.
I continued to teach throughout the years and retired five years ago.
My years at Gordonvale High were extremely happy and the
positiveness and approachability of teachers instilled a great love of
learning and consequently teaching.
Keep Saturday the 17th of May free as the Gordonvale Turf
Club is proud to present the JPMI Roy Marsh Memorial race

The five race program will complimented by fashions of the
Field, a Fun-e-farm and Jumping castles for the kids, as well as
other entertainment. There will be local and southern bookies
present on the day. The feature race on the day will be worth
$10 000.

Lions Youth of the Year
Closing the GapOn Friday the 21st of March Gordonvale commemorated Closing
the Gap Day with a number of events around the township.
Starting off the day were two breakfasts, the first was a “Mens
Breakfast” held at Gordonvale primary school in conjunction with
Mission Australia which encouraged men to come along to the
school, have breakfast and associate with the children of the school.
A healthy breakfast was also hosted by the Gordonvale National
Australia Bank for people of their way to work as part of the day.
In 2008 The Council of Australian Governments set specific and
ambitious targets for closing the gap. These included to:
To close the life-expectancy gap within a generation.
To halve the gap in mortality rates for Indigenous children under
five within a decade.
To ensure access to early childhood education for all Indigenous
four years olds in remote communities within five years.
To halve the gap in reading, writing and numeracy achievements
for children within a decade.
To halve the gap in IndigenousYear 12 achievement by 2020.
To halve the gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous
and non-Indigenous Australians within a decade.
A lunch was later hosted by Indigenous Community Links at
Gordonvale where elders and community members discussed ideas
and strategies to help with closing the gap. The day was a great
success and plans underway for next years event.

This year, eleven students from Gordonvale State High School
entered the LionsYouth of theYear competition.
Once again, our school had the highest representation of
competitors in the region. Lions Youth of the Year is a competition
that is not designed for people who are not willing to embrace a
challenge. There are a number of hurdles that students must face in
preparation for this exciting event.
Unlike public speaking competitions, Lions Youth of the Year is
broken down into several dimensions. The first encompasses a
comprehensive application form, outlining their sporting, academic
and community achievements. This is followed by a gruelling
interview on current affairs and the aspirations of applicants.
Students are interviewed and judged by three adjudicators before
they deliver two impromptu speeches and a five minute prepared
speech on a topic of their choice.
Our students presented very stirring addresses that kept audiences
thoroughly engaged and interested. The competitors were Brie ,
Jimmy Baker, Thomas, James, Amy, Nicole, Jake, Claire, Jess, Alex
and Billy who was named the best public speaker and overall winner
of the Gordonvale Heats.
Billy will be representing our school at the zone finals on Saturday
night and will be competing against regional winners. All entrants
should be commended for a tremendous effort and we wish Billy the
very best of luck. LionsYouth of theYear .

In the age of technology, mental maths calculations are
replaced by scanners and computers in shops, accounting
programs at work and calculators on mobile phones.
However there is some merit in being able to recite by heart
the times tables.
Memorising the times tables also helps with division and
more complex mathematical calculations such as addition of
fractions with different denominators.
Children who have difficulty with maths may benefit from
learning with visual and kinaesthetic aids such as pictures,
graphs and Cuisenaire rods.
Approximately 5% of students in Australia have dyscalculia -
a complex learning disability involving a wide range of
problems with maths.

Young pups no match for the old dogs!
In a result that even surprised the crowd, the Far North District police
AFL team took out match honours at the inaugural Coppers vs Colts
AFL match at Gordonvale on March 8.
The Pyramid Power Junior AFL under 17’s team made up the Colts side,
their quick legs and boundless energy however was no match for the
wise tactics and years of experience in Coppers team. The knee braces,
deep heat and excessive stretching before the game tagged the police
team as the underdogs from the get-go. To the surprise of most there
on the day, including the police team themselves, the Coppers
emerged triumphantwitha72-45 defeatover theColts.
The Police team will concede that their team numbers were boosted
by past and present Pyramid Power players that added some much
needed skill to the forward line. Whilst the crowd was entertained by
the Colts hard fought contests and quick pace, the standouts on the
police team was Acting Senior Constable Dan Mc Entee with his
sharp goal kicking skills and the surprising agility and distances
covered by Dog Squad Officer, Sergeant Dave Raymond.
The first quarter was evenly matched but as the muscles warmed up
the police team got their game-on. Senior Sergeant Glen Horan and
Sergeant Dave Holmes displayed ball skills that were hard to contend
with along with the tactical positional displays from Constable
Nicole Barnes. The event was coordinated by Edmonton Police
officer, Sergeant Michael McGarry and Pyramid Power Junior AFL
President Brett Kennerley. With the aim of promoting a positive
relationship between police and local indigenous youth the event
further advocated choosing a healthy lifestyle through sport.
“Despite some aching muscles the day was a huge success and was
thoroughly enjoyed by players and spectators alike. The game
helped develop a mutual respect between police and the players.
The final score has spurred on the Colts to take out the title next
year.” said Sergeant McGarry.

Council CornerWHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND THE REGION
(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum)
Early settlers from Denmark played a big part
in the pioneering of North Queensland. Nils
Petersen was one of those Danes.
In 1879, Nils travelled to Australia in the hope
of carving out a new life for himself and his
family. For a while he lived in Townsville with
his wife and children and then moved further
north to the newly opened shanty town of
Cairns. Very different from today, the
settlement of Cairns was struggling for
existence, on a couple of sandbanks in a
mangrove swamp on the shores of Trinity
Inlet. Nils had travelled to the area across the
Mulgrave River and is credited with opening
up and naming the locality, Aloomba, which
is the aboriginal name for the magnificent
red cedar tree. Cedar once grew in
abundance along the nearby Mulgrave River,
but early settlers on the Mulgrave were
timber getters and they admired the
beautifully handcrafted canoes that the
native aborigines had. The aborigines would
hollow out a huge cedar log with fire and
stone axes.
It is impossible by today’s standards, to
imagine the family’s trip into the unknown
from Cairns to Behana Creek. (Named after
the surveyor, Tom Behan) There was no road,
no bridges where the Bruce Highway runs
today. In the wet season, the swamps and
flooded creeks cut the settlers off for days
and weeks. Once the Petersen family was
settled, they began to grow their own
vegetable produce and when they took it to
Cairns to sell, the route was across the
Mulgrave River at Aloomba to Packer’s Camp
on the first day; next day was to Woree for
another night stay. On the third day, produce
would be carted into Cairns and the family
would return to Woree to stay overnight.
They could not stay in Cairns as there was no
pasture for the horses.
Hans Rasmussen was another Danish early
settler in Aloomba. He and his brother
landed in Townsville and met his fellow
countryman Nils there and later married Nils
daughter. Hans chose land on Vohland’s road
in the Aloomba district. He built his house
and stocked his farm with cattle, pigs and
poultry all shipped from Townsville. Like
most settlers, Hans also grew his own
vegetables, fruit and kept a few bee hives.
In the great flood of 1891, the Rasmussen
homestead was completely flooded and the
family with their two young sons had to leave
everything and attempt to ride to safety.
Lightening and thunder frightened the
horses, so they had to let them go. They both
set off on foot, each carrying a precious
bundle and finally made it to the safety at the
Walker homestead, where the Aloomba hotel
stands. The Mulgrave River and Behanna
Creek had broken their banks, joined
together and flooded the surrounding
countryside. Nils also had great tragedy; he
lost 200 head in the 1891 flood. He needed
every bit of courage to keep going, as along
with the loss of his cattle, he was constantly
on guard from angry aboriginals, who bitterly
resented his coming to their hunting
grounds.

Edmonton Pool Earns RetirementThe ageing Edmonton Pool will be retired from public service on
June 30 as Cairns Regional Council looks to establish new
recreational opportunities in the immediate area.
The current management lease for the pool complex expires at the
end of the financial year and the lessee has indicated that an
extension will not be sought.
"Use of the pool has been declining and the complex itself is
deteriorating," Mayor Bob Manning said.
"Inspections in the past couple of years have found that many of the
components are nearing the end of their serviceable life. To bring this
40-year-old complex back up to scratch for the management
contract to be put to tender would come at a considerable cost, with
the likelihood being that the usage would remain low.
"There is no swimming club based at Edmonton. Alternative learn-
to-swim classes are held privately within the area and we encourage
residents to support these local businesses."

Welcome to this month’s Editorial and all things
Real Estate.
ARE WE THERE YET? This question pops up from
time to time as people wonder when the property
market is going to recover in Cairns. According to
the experts, we are moving from the bottom of the
market towards a rising market.
I have noticed an enormous difference in
Pre Approved Buyer Activity since the December
Quarter with almost all my properties going under contract with
multiple offers, close to list price, in the past 2 months.
As many of you would be seeing in the media, Auctions are driving
good sale prices and turnover in the southern cities. We are also
seeing a good clearance rate in Cairns.
Auctions are the most transparent real estate transaction as buyers
put their offers into the public arena. Another successful strategy in
this current market is the Tender Process.
If you would like information about this or any other advice about
your real estate needs please phone Robyn Hawley-Whitton - 0488

Edmonton Pool has the lowest patronage of any of Cairns Regional
Council's swimming complexes, with an average of about 120
visitations a week. The majority of visitors are learn-to-swim
participants who can be catered for at several other nearby venues.
"This facility has served its community well in years gone by, but we
now believe it has reached the end of its lifespan," Cr Manning said.
Division 2 Councillor John Schilling said the multi-million-dollar
redevelopment of Sugarworld Waterpark resulted in reduced use of
Edmonton Pool, as the new waterpark has become the hub of
recreational activity in the area.
"Sugarworld Waterpark is just up the road and other Council-
operated pools at Gordonvale and Woree cater to the more serious
swimmers," Cr Schilling said.
"When you add in the opening of the Edmonton Leisure Centre as a
PCYC venue with a range of recreation and fitness activities, the
need for Edmonton Pool has been drastically reduced.
"Further to this, work will start next financial year on the Walker Road
sporting precinct and with the closure of pool, we can now look at
further developing Fuller Park to provide even more recreational
options for Edmonton residents."
In the longer term, Council is investigating the option to include an
additional pool within the Sugarworld Gardens precinct.
GHS fundraiser2014-2015 entertainment memberships are coming soon
Gordonvale High School P&C is pleased to be selling the
Entertainment Books again in 2014 as a fundraising venture,
which will run until the 3rd week of June, to help fund a variety
of projects around the school. The books are $55 each and with
each book sold, $11 goes directly back to the school. This year,
customers have a choice to purchase a hard copy book or
download the digital format to their smart phone.
Entertainment books are full of discounted coupons for
restaurants, accommodation, activities and shopping for the
Cairns area. There are also books available for other areas within
Australia and New Zealand.
I bought the book and I only had to use it twice and I got my
money back. The book launch date is 7th April, 2014, but if you
pre-buy before 1st April, The Entertainment book people will
give you a bonus offer of 6 vouchers out of a choice of 20 which
you can use straight away. By clicking on the following link
www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/27038w4 you
will automatically be taken to the ordering page. There is a short
video, which will explain how it all works.
Books will be available at Gordonvale High School after the
school holidays on 23rd April. Purchase your book at the school
tuckshop by cash or credit card or over the phone (4043 3229)
and on proof of purchase, customers can pick their copy up at
the school office. If you would require a book during the
holidays, please contact me on 4056 5739.
