PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
There was a point in time, when I
thought I should throw my rain
gauge out, as it only just ever filled
with dirt & cob webs- now I think I
need a bigger one! and I can’t mow
the lawns as it is too wet & boggy-
but am I complaining- absolutely
not!!!
It is well worth a drive around the
district just to view the wonderful
over flowing creeks & rivers. The
grass is almost a fluorescent green
and they should certainly have a
great show for the Festival of
Gardens. Bendigo Gardens are
currently a mass of tulips and look
absolutely splendid- a must for all
to see.
We were to have Barry Lacey talk
on Bonsai at our General Meeting
in September but he was fortunate
enough to gain a lucky place on the
surgeons operating list and alas was
unable to do the talk- we trust you
are having a good recovery Barry!!!
Fortunately for us Barry organised
his own replacement, Trevor
Wheeler who brought many of his
delightful plants for us to look at
while he gave a very hands-on
talk about potting and shaping
of these interesting forms of art-
Many
Thanks Trevor.
I have decided that I am an over
feeder (after all a bit more won’t
hurt????) Unfortunately, you would
think that I would have learnt from
this- but no! My mother would often
over feed her plants- the grass being
a good example- rather badly burnt
by too much fertilizer.
A couple of weeks ago I said to Rob
let’s get out there quickly before it
rains and feed the roses so the rain
will help it soak in- out we went and
diligently cast off a cup here and
there onto all the roses- which
looked very healthy indeed- alas a
near disaster! The next day all the
new shoots looked very sad and
some had even died- I was then in
damage control to remove the rose
food with the trowel- a very close
shave for my poor roses!!
Some reminders- there are so many
events coming up so don’t forget to
check MULCH for this list. Please
also remember that we are often
very light on for helpers and
desperately need assistance.
We have Maroopna Garden Club
visiting Tuesday 18th October- we
need to show our hospitality with
a good afternoon tea- please contact
Marion Cooke 0n 5473 4050 for your
services!!! A sponge or two would be
great! Or anything else!
Also Judy Eastwood is taking names
and deposits for the
Christmas Function at ASQ
Butterfly House Tuesday 15th
November-
we can even do some Christmas
shopping there if we wish

New Member
Welcome to Bev Tozer
Club member and Bonsai enthusiast, Barry Lacey was unable to give a presentation at the September meeting so he kindly arranged for fellow Bonsai expert, Trevor Wheeler, to give a talk on the topic. Trevor and his wife, Helen, founders of the Goldfields Bonsai group, brought along a number of Bonsai together with various tools and books related to this form of gardening.
Trevor explained that Bonsai is a Japanese art form using trees and other plants grown in ornamental pots. The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and bonsai practice focuses on long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees growing in a container.
Trevor makes his own ornamental pots and uses a variety of tools to shape and trim Bonsai specimens.
Soil preparation is very important and a sieve is used to remove excess dust and other bits and pieces from Bonsai potting mix, before sand is added to the mix. Soil needs to drain well but also be able to retain moisture. Bonsai need to be re-potted and fed with special fertiliser at appropriate times of the year.
Club members enjoyed Trevor's talk, asking many questions with some thinking they may give this art form a try!
