TO THE DIRECTOR

The music Sammy Nestico composed for the Count Basie Orchestrainspired countless jazz musicians, educators and students. When BasieStraight Ahead was released in 1967, Muhlenberg High School banddirector Henry “Hank” Hoffman shared it with his students. In fact, everychart that Nestico wrote for Basie remains in their library.

Inspired by Sammy Nestico’s charts for the Count Basie Orchestra, nat-urally this chart kicks off with a piano solo. The pianist can play the writ-ten solo or improvise their own as long as they maintain the minimalapproach of Count Basie. The saxophones introduce the melody in uni-son at measure 9. As always, pay close attention to the tuning and theaccidentals as there may be a few surprises! The trumpets pick up themelody on the bridge in unison along with harmonized rhythmic punch-es from the trombone section. The role of the bari saxophone shiftsfrom playing with the trombones, to playing with the saxes, to its ownsolo moments. Listen for those moments and bring them out.

The tenor saxophone has a solo over the bridge, but could also beplayed by the trumpet. The chord changes are easy and fun to playover, however, written solos have been provided.

The music of Count Basie is famous for a tight ensemble sound and alaid back feel. Often the tempos are actually faster than they sound.The horns should play with a relaxed feel paying close attention to notrushing the downbeats. It’s common for young musicians to anticipate afigure that should hit squarely on the downbeat. The rhythm sectionshould keep a driving steady groove and don’t allow the horns to causethem to drag.

Saxophonist Andrew Neu has toured the world with Bobby Caldwell, DianeSchuur and Smokey Robinson. His arrangements have been recorded by mem-bers of The Airmen of Note, Bernie Dresel and Dave Stahl.
