Akbar: Akbarnama 22/A223/C11

The illustrated pages of the V & A’s Akbamama came from a deluxe manuscript prepared for the emperor Akbar (r. 15561605) which was probably broken up in the 19 th century. The

Akbamama was a chronicle written between c1590 and 1598 by the court historian and polymath, Abu’l Fazl, and includes a detailed account of the reign. The miniatures are thought to date from between 1586 and 1589, though the original colophon has been lost. The events illustrated in the V & A’s pages took place between 1560 and 1577 and most are inscribed with the name of the artist or artists who worked on them. Many of these are in Abu’l Fazl’s list of the finest artists of the age and include Basawan, Kesu, La’l and Miskin. Others, such as Mansur, were junior artists who became renowned during the reign of Akbar’s son, Jahangir.
