Make-Up Designory (MUD) was founded over a decade ago by

accomplished professional make-up artisans. Today we immerse

students in the fundamentals of make-up artistry for the entertainment,

fashion and retail cosmetics industries at bi-coastal campuses in Los

Angeles and New York or in MUD Studios around the world. Our

state-licensed instructors have years of professional expertise in their

respective fields of film, television and fashion. They can train you in a

variety of subjects and help you discover your own unique style.

MUD programs and courses are designed to teach a wide range of

practical and specialized skills. We review and update our curriculum

on a regular basis to make sure you’re learning the latest techniques.

MUD students also have access to ongoing career advising, networking

opportunities and continuous career placement assistance. We’ve

created an environment where you can gain the skills, the vision and

the discipline to work alongside the very best in your industry of choice.

What’s your dream? Our programs are designed to help you achieve it.

MUD Studio

Make-Up Designory has created a series of part-time courses. These

courses are held conveniently at MUD’s main campuses, MUD Studios

and Partner Schools throughout the country and internationally.

MUD Studio courses are based on the same great educational

methodology and teacher training that has helped to make MUD a

bedrock in make-up education. The courses are pulled from the same

curriculum that comprises the longer programs at MUD, but are broken

up into smaller modules. These modules can be taken separately or

combined, allowing the student to transfer their education to one of

MUD’s main campuses. For more information see page 36 >>

MUD instructors have years of professional expertise while working

with some of the biggest names in film, television and fashion. These

Housing Available for International Students

Our bi-coastal campuses are located at the epicenters of the

entertainment, fashion and cosmetics industries. The MUD LA

campus maintains safe and affordable housing for international

students at the Avalon Burbank Apartments, located across the

street from the facility. The furnished student dorm-style apartments

include elegant floor plans and amenities to make students feel right

at home. Combine that with its excellent location and you get a truly

great living experience.

International Students

Make-Up Designory proudly welcomes international students from

all over the world. As make-up artistry is a visual art, there is no level

of English language proficiency required. MUD is authorized to issue

I-20 documentation for M-1 visas for students who are enrolled at

the school. The school’s I-20 document is only valid for an M-1 visa

and can only be provided for the period of time during which the

student is registered at MUD.

Graduates of MUD have moved on to amazing roles in Hollywood,

Broadway, the runways of Europe and beyond. Building your own

dream isn’t easy, but with the strong foundation of experience,

students are well on their way to building their very own custom

made aspirations.

“Special Make-up Effects” is one of the most creative, challenging and technical forms of make-up artistry. The term itself was coined to classify make-up techniques that go beyond the traditional “paint and powder” methods used in the film and television industry. Specifically, this refers to the application of materials and / or “appliances” that change the shape of an actor’s face or body.

Silicone

To create the cut we used Third Degree, a silicone molding

compound that is safe for use on skin. The product has two

parts, A and B. Dispense two equal amounts of part A and

part B onto a clean palette and mix thoroughly. Be cautious

of cross contaminating the container with a dirty palette knife

or the wrong lid. This will cause the material in the containers

to cure prematurely. Once both parts are mixed together,

the product takes about ten minutes to thicken. For this

demonstration, we let the product sit a few more minutes to allow for a thicker consistency

which makes the build-up of the scar, or laceration a little faster. Once the product reaches the

desired density, use a palette knife, to apply the silicone to the face.

SculptTo begin sculpting, we recommend building up one side of

the wound at a time. This helps prevent using more product

than is necessary to create the effect. For our claw mark, we

created the largest wound first, then, the smaller wounds.

Layer the material so that one side of the applied silicone

blends into the skin and make the other side a bit more. The

jagged edge is going to be the inside of the laceration. We

decided to make the lacerations irregular, with each “scratch”

starting at a different point on the face, to simulate the closing

of the claw as it struck the flesh.

Work quickly with the silicone, as there is a time limit on how long it will remain pliable.

Once the general shape of the injury is laid out, use the palette knife to remove any of the excess

material making sure each laceration is completely self-contained and that each one blends into

the skin. Typically, this type of make-up is used in films and television shows when it doesn’t

need to be duplicated it over and over. If this effect needed to be applied on multiple days, we

recommend using a prosthetic appliance instead.

TextureJust prior to the silicone solidifying, we used a MUD Orange

Stipple Sponge dipped in 99% alcohol to add texture to the

smooth lines. The sponge can also be used to help blend

the silicone however, be careful not to smooth out the nice

jagged edges.

Cut SpongeIn order to apply sealer to the silicone, cut an orange sponge

into a small round applicator. We round the sponge to keep the

sealer from creating an edge. The sealer will ruin the sponge,

so cut just what is needed.

SealThe sealer is a plastic material that allows us to use regular make-up on many different types of special make-up effects materials. Regular make can be used on silicone, but the silicone is so smooth that the make-up may have a hard time sticking to it. Stipple the sealer on with the orange sponge. Start in the middle of the wound and work outwards, toward the edges of the injury. This will help keep the edges as thin as possible. We made sure the silicone was well blended so that we are not creating a thick edge with the sealer. Two layers should be sufficient for this type of application.

FoundationOnce the sealer dries, the claw wound is ready to be painted.

Even though the silicone is clear and allows the skin to show

through, we recommend starting off with a thin amount of

foundation. In this demonstration, we used MUD’s cream

foundation in four different shades that matched the shades

in the model’s face. We used MUD’s 910 brush made with a

synthetic blend that flares out nicely as we smash it against the

palette This allows the product to be deposited as small dots

of color onto wound.

Skin ColorIn order to achieve a realistic appearance to the flesh wound,

apply the foundation with a very light touch while turning the

brush. In addition to the foundation we also used a small

amount of MUD’s Cream Cheek Color in Sweet Cheeks for a

touch of warmth.

CFX WheelsMUD’s CFX Wheels, which stands for Character Effects, are cream

products used to create a variety of special make-up effects. The

products are used to create the redness and bruising.

BruisingWe want our female character to still look strong despite the

ghastly wound on her face, so we are using a subtle amount of

red to create the initial bruising. The bruising could be really black

and blue, due to the large size of the injury. However, we wanted it

to look like she might be winning. We added maroon into red just

as an accent. For the deeper shadows, we used a combination

of red and blue for a deep purple color that was applied into the

shadows under her cheek bones and into her temple area.

Inside Cuts & DepthWith bruising looking very fresh and new, we went inside the

lacerations with black. The black is used along the edges of the

opening to create separation

from the cut to the edge of

the skin. This area is filled

with a mixture of thick and

thin blood, so the black will

become extremely subdued.

Add BloodAs a final touch, we add blood to the injury. When on set for a

film, we would add a small amount of blood to the injury and

wait until we are on set to add large amounts of blood.

As with all make-ups, remember to come up with a plan first

and never panic. It’s just make-up and we can very easily add

to it or take it away. Nothing is permanent.

Welcome to injuries 101. Paul Thompson, Director of Education for Make-Up Designory, has over 20

years of experience as a professional make-up artist and over 15 years in education. The following is his

demonstration of a step-by-step process for creating silicone cuts and lacerations scars. While this ap-

plication demonstrates how to create a laceration, it is also commonly used in film and television when

creating scars and other effects. This effect is designed to be built up on the actor as it would have been

done traditionally with wax. However, these materials and techniques are much more durable and long

lasting. With a little creativity and just a few products you can create almost anything.

Whenever you are planning an injury, it is important to consider the storyline behind the wound. Consider the cause of the lacerations, perhaps the weapon used. This demonstration

reflects the story of a beast attack on a woman’s face; the claw marks are deep and savage.

Grand OpeningMilano

MUD Italy

ilan, the anticipation is over! MUD Studio Milano has

officially opened its doors to those who share the

same creative passion for make-up in one of the most

vibrant fashion capitals in the world. The international

school for professional artists originally created by makeup artists

in New York City and Los Angeles, has finally arrived in Milan. The

inauguration of the beautiful

new studio took place on June

13th, proudly marking the birth

of MUD Studio Milano. As the

evening progressed, immense

enthusiasm and creativity filled

the air until the studio came

alive. Filled with journalists and

editors from the world of beauty,

along with students and make-

up junkies, the doors opened

to a crowd of artists eager to

experience the new facility.

Located right in the heart of the illustrious Navigli canal (Via Casale

3/a), an eclectic neighborhood filled with trendy shops, artists and

restaurants, the MUD Studio Milano marked its ground for the very

first time in Italy. The studio itself has an ambient, creative atmosphere

with modern MUD visuals and a brightly-lit classroom, fully equipped

with industry standard tools.

MUD Studio Milano had been brewing in rich creativity, cured with

passion to share a unique experience with those who want to

explore their artistic skills and make-up talents. The new studio is

looking forward to continuing the legacy of MUD by extending the

development of artists and industry professionals as well as the

modern woman who wants to learn how to look her best. The MUD

journey begins with courses that focus on basic beauty techniques of

the industry. The next level ventures out to more unique styles.

With the support of MUD Europe’s talented team of artists and group of

unforgettable students, MUD Milano completed its first PRO I course

(Level I) held June 17th - 28th, with more enthusiasm and passion

than ever imagined. As the School Director of MUD Studio Milano,

Carlo Mazzarella described the

mood and essence of the first

complete course.

“A big international family, with

whom I feel right at home,

amongst close friends. I felt an

incredible atmosphere of deep

passion shared by those who

worked and learned together.

A real camaraderie of newly

formed friendships and lasting

memories for us all”.

The cross cultural philosophy that MUD Milano shares does not only

include the international MUD team of make-up artists and instructors,

it also brings students from all over the world. For the upcoming

session of PRO I in July, MUD Milano hosted students from Egypt and

Switzerland among its local natives.

Upon the exciting completion of the first Pro I course at MUD

Studio Milano, one student shares her emotions on Facebook:

“The MUD team Milan made me fall in love! You are the best! I

thank you for these two intense weeks of PRO I. It has been the

best course that I have done so far and now I can recommend

it to everyone who is passionate about the art of beauty as a

makeup artist or for themselves by knowing how to execute a

look properly.”

M

8

Page 9: MUD ART newspaper fall winter 2013

The positive responses of the studio don’t end there as MUD

Milano continues to receive an overwhelming amount of support

from established make-up instructors, beauty editors and industry

professionals that have expressed an interest in using the MUD make-

up line. Whether being used on set or featured in the media, MUD

cosmetics has gained the attention of many beauty influencers.

Many of the same beauty experts attended a very special product

introduction in early July, where they had the opportunity to experience

the product line and learn more about it. This key branding event

helped to create buzz about the studio’s upcoming arrival.

In the few days before the next sessions began, MUD Studio Milano

was contacted by superstar personalities such as global fashion show

organizer Jessica Minh Anh, model and entrepreneur phenomenon

of J Model Management. The MUD team of artists had the pleasure

of making up Ms. Anh for her television interview for X-Style. The

gorgeous star was scouting a location for her next extravagant fashion

show production and recognized Milan to be a city of particular interest

because of its mood and appetite for fashion and architecture.

The editor of Canadian Phabrik Magazine also selected MUD Milano

for an on-location shoot in the streets of Milan. Between the amazing

opportunities and inspired beauty of the city, it’s the perfect place for

artists to form relationships with others in that share their passion.

The upcoming sessions are open to all ages and skill levels for

the same ojective - of experiencing the love of make-up at the

MUD Studio while being surrounded by exquisite splendor for a

little added inspiration.

the best make-up artists know that when it comes to making

your dreams come true, you’ve got to have the talent, the

knowledge and most of all, the gut.

For Meagan Hester, it was the opportunity to finally land a spot on

a reality show, while Brittany Martin has toured all over Europe on

various assignments while becoming an entreprenuer.

Meagan, a contestant on SYFY’s Face Off competition for special

effects artists, transitioned from a student in training, directly to working

in the entertainment industry as a make-up artist. Her most memorable

lessons learned at MUD was the importance of professionalism and

etiquette on the job. “MUD gave me the encouragement to go into the

world of entertainment.”

While learning to be bi-coastal between Los Angeles, still the mecca of

FX and New York, Meagan has begun to receive notoriety for her work

and her colorful personality that shines through at every assignment.

Working in the make-up industry since 2006, Brittany

graduated from MUD and immediately began working as a

make-up artist. She later attained her business degree while also

opening up her makeup studio, catering to an eclectic clientele.

Recently winning TheKnot’s “Best of Weddings” two years in a row,

Brittany has picked up sponsorships from companies such as Anastasia

Beverly Hills, House of Lashes and Hair Addiction Brushes UK.

Overseas, Brittany worked to expand her clientele base in the fashion

market. With an avant-garde themed shoot in the UK, a meeting with a

cosmetics company that she periodically writes blogs for and assisting

Norah Nona at London Fashion Week for the Bernard Chandran

show, this artist is making a path for herself like no other.

As an artist, she continues to represent several make-up lines, will be

featured in the newest Illamasqua Magazine for Sephora and is gearing

up for a special business-filled event with the CEO of Market America,

Loren Ridinger in New York.

These MUD graduates are proof that with the right skills and a ton

of determination, your dreams can become a vibrant reality with no

limits on creativity.

Ghent – MUD’s 2nd Studio in Belgium

A School Tucked Within the Walls of a Mansion

ight months, that’s how long it actually took Make-Up Designory to decide on opening up another MUD Studio in Belgium. The first studio opened in Kortrijk (Belgium) in October of last year, but when recieving a lot of enrollments for the PRO I (Level I.)

course from nearby cities, it was clear that expansion to a more centered location was needed. On the first day of June, Make-Up Designory Bel-gium was happy to announce its second opening in Ghent.

Welcome to Ghent

We could mention that National Geographic Traveler Magazine has listed Ghent as the most

authentic and historic city in the world that’s full of life, or the fact that Lonely Planet has called

the city “Europe’s best kept secret and a must-see destination.” We could even boast of the

city’s architecture and hospitality, but the true reason is that the major city is accessible to all

nearby cities like Brussels and Antwerp while only being a 50-minute drive from the national

airport. With the need for a make-up school in the area, Ghent was the obvious choice.

The beginning of a new experience

The Open School Day was intended for potential students

to come by and ask about the MUD training program, but

it soon turned into more than a simple meet and greet.

Exceeding all expectations, the Red Riding Hood themed

event took over the city, creating buzz all over town. While

visitors were treated to special make-up effects and beauty

demonstrations, along with airbrushing, the biggest hit was

a surprise performance from a national soul and blues choir.

Over 200 guests were able to speak with MUD instructors

and showed interest in the new arrival of Ghent’s new

fairytale location.

It’s more than just an education

A MUD education is an experience of its own, especially

in Ghent. The studio hosts two classrooms, a student

shop, photo studio and lounging area for students. Still not

impressed? Well check out the school’s Alice in Wonderland garden located near the river,

the perfect place during the summer months. You can also take a break with fellow students

and teachers at the upscale lounge area.

Products also available

Make-Up Designory now has two studios in Belgium, both located in architecturally

phenomenal locations for students to enjoy. But for the general consumer, making MUD

products available to them is a key component to the success of the MUD Studios. With

this in mind, a pop-up store in Kortrijk from September until December makes getting

product a unique experience for everyone. Go to www.makeupdesignory.be for details.

Beto França

Brazilian artist shares his MUD experience

am a lover of academic teaching and was delighted to study and learn more about the

art of make-up. With a watchful eye and never-ending curiosity, I seek to learn new and

modern techniques and follow those artists in the world who continue to produce work

that is so incredibly wonderful. I follow the evolution of cinema and its ceaseless art of

creating and re-creating amazing effects and technology. It was on this quest in search for

the “new and current” that struck the impulse to leave my country and to look more closely

at what great things there were yet to learn.

In 2005 on a trip to New York, I listed some schools I wanted to visit and the first on my list

was Make-Up Designory on West Broadway Street in Soho.

I came to school and found a beautiful girl who greeted me with a big welcoming smile. Not

to mention, I hardly knew any English at all. So, with difficulty, I asked if she knew Spanish.

She answered with a beautiful smile, “I unfortunately only speak Portuguese.”

Rita Botelho, the beautiful girl who later became a great friend, gave me a tour of the school and

explained the courses and products and the possibility of returning to study. Passionate about

what I saw and following through with a goal I previously set, in 2006 I took my first course in

Beauty. It transformed the way that I worked and provided a significant career change. Since

then, I returned to MUD for a new course and to revisit great friendships built. This year, in 2013,

MUD offered me the opportunity to realize one of my greatest dreams in life as a make-up artist;

taking a course in special effects, in Los Angeles, the cinema capital of the world.

I prepared myself for almost a year to experience something so special in my life, living in LA

for two months and devoting myself exclusively to learning one of the most complex areas of

make-up. I have shared nearly the entire structure, the teachers, the direction and its friendly

staff who work together to make it possible to provide an excellent learning experience to

help students become great professionals.

In spite of 20+ years of experience I have as a professional make-up artist and MUD with

its philosophy passed through the fantastic teaching staff, inspired me to revise many of

my concepts by using the information and technology I learned while modernizing my

techniques. It certainly raised my vision as an artist and teacher.

Besides all the learning, I had the opportunity to show some of my work on two occasions:

The Makeup Show LA and NY and IMATS. This is where I put all of the practice and

knowledge acquired and added to my experience.

I have to thank everyone, especially Tate Holland who gave me this special experience and

the honor to meet the entire MUD family and opening the doors for me to experience and

understand how everything is so beautifully perfect.

Thank you MUD Family, for the teachings, for this transformation - both professional and

personal, for the opportunity to meet you and for the great friendships which we built and

solidified, that I keep dearly in my heart and in my memory.

Miriam Jacks

Brazilian artist shares his MUD experience

hy did you choose MUD for education?

I originally wanted to attend Hasso von

Hugo Make-up School in Berlin, but they

were very expensive. I was working for a

family locally that suggested that I trained in the States

since I wanted to work internationally. At the time, there

was no New York MUD campus

so I decided to move to Los

Angeles to study and it was the

best education I could imagine

for myself.

Please describe to me your

career in Germany.

After moving back to Germany

in 2004, I moved to Cologne

to freelance while sending my

work to production companies.

My first agent, Nina Klein helped

to steer me in the right direction

by finding me industry jobs that

I really enjoyed. I got really lucky

when Nina added me as an artist

in my first year of my career. I

don’t recommend young artists going directly to agencies

without a great portfolio. Once they look at your work and

don’t like it, it’s hard to get a second chance. After three

years of building my portfolio, I began working for even

bigger productions, international editorials and celebrities

like Peter Lindberg and Karl Lagerfield. I knew that I wanted

to be more than just another make-up artist in a sea of

thousands, but I also loved everything about my job. In

2008, I had something new in mind, a beauty concept store

and so I moved to Berlin.

Could you tell me something

about your shop concept.

I started JACKS beauty depart-

ment in the area called Prenzlauer

Berg in May 2009, we sell

international beauty products

and offer a professional make-

up and hair service. Of course,

Make-Up Designory was one of

the first product lines I imported, I

am still working with the products

on all of my jobs for the last 9

years. I especially love the Make-

up Palettes, they are so great

and convenient for all skin types.

Next to MUD we sell products like

Korres, butter LONDON, Cosmetics a la Carte, Tokyo Milk,

Tweezerman and we have a huge stock of accessories like

lashes, bags and brushes. I start last year my own brush line

called JACKS beauty line. The brushes are all handmade

by me and my team. We paint the brush handles with

acrylic colors, so every brush is unique. I want to add more

accessory products to the line, such

as colourful set bags and tools. As

you can see, my work is never done

and I’m full of ideas every day.

I heard you are also face of

L`Oréal Paris?

Because of the store, I gained a

lot of press presence as a beauty

expert. So when L´Oréal Paris

casted me as a Make-up Artist, I

was contracted as the National

Artist for L´Oréal Paris in 2011. For

me, it was a new era, switching

from behind the camera to in

front of it. As the ambassador for

the brand, I am the official press

person for magazine interviews,

tutorial productions and even a small television that airs

once a week.

What are your plans for the future?

I am planning my first franchise store and the development

of my beauty line. Mareike Joerdens an old friend and

partner from the beauty industry is opening a JACKS

beauty department in Munich this August. I’m very proud

that we have already got to this point without working

with big investors. I am still looking

for more partners in other cities

and looking to continue growing

the business at a healthy rate. A

beauty concept store like mine is

still very rare and my biggest wish

is to spread the stores so that more

and more women get to experience

the joy of having a personal Make-

up Artist.

Even after working for such a long

time as a make-up artist I never

stop doing free work for my own

creativity. I think if you choose this

job it is not only about making

money, but more about loving

what you create.

hen we asked husband and wife make-up art-ist team Gil and Kumara Romero how they met, they both answered that it

all started at MUD. Both drawn to make-up from an early age (Gil remembers “watching ‘The Making of Thriller’ over and over again until the tape wore down and snapped,”) their journeys eventually led them to Make-Up Designory’s flagship school in Burbank, California.

Both began their careers as MUD students, with

Gil enrolling in a Special Effects course in 1998 and

being asked by founding instructor Karl Zundel to

“We were both amazed to hear how the class grew

from 3 students to 8!” Kumara took her first tour in

December of 1999 quickly enrolling at the start of the

new year in 2000.

The couple met in 2001, when Kumara was hired to

assist her future husband in the MUD FX shop with daily

operations. What’s it like working together as husband

and wife? Gil and Kumara don’t work as closely as

they once did, but their relationship continues to grow

alongside their careers.

“Working with MUD, our careers and personal lives

have become so intertwined, but together we’ve each

become part of something bigger than ourselves.

We’ve become part of MUD, and we share the bond

of friendship and family with others who have a career

within our organization.” says Gil, now the Director of

the Los Angeles Campus.

Their plans for the future? Kumara, now the Warehouse

as an individual. I strive to learn and problem solve and

find it important to always pave a better path for our

future together.”

Precious About Make-up

We spoke to Kate Benton and Jan Sewell, professional London based make-up artists who are also directors for PAM (Precious About Make-up). PAM is a pro make-up shop based in London who now stock MUD.

When did you get the idea for opening a make-up pro

shop and when was PAM established?

J. Both Kate and I wanted a “one stop shop” which sold

products for both hair and make-up. At the time, the pro

shops only sold make-up.

K. We got the idea of opening the shop in 1995 and it took a

year to find premises and to organize.

How long have you worked as a make-up artist?

J. 36 years!!

K. Too long!! All my working adult life... but loving it!

Who or what inspired you to become a make-up artist?

J. I was watching a BBC period production called ‘I Claudius’

which had lots of aging and I thought ‘’I want to do that’’

K. Art... the idea of changing people... a living canvas...

Which areas of make-up are you currently working in?

J. I mainly work on feature films, applying make up, hair and

prosthetics.

K. Very scary... live Saturday evening shows with changing

celebs, as well as a period drama with Jon Hamm and

Dan Radcliffe.

What characteristics would you say that a professional

make-up artist must have to be successful?

J. You have to like people and have stamina.

K. You must be artistic, empathetic, calm-or at least on the outside.

What are the most important attributes of professional

make-up products?

J. Versatility. Make-up artists will often change the use of

products, we will mix and match colors and uses... just

because it says lipstick on the label doesn’t mean we will

only use it as a lipstick!

K. I would say products that actually do what they say

they will do.

How and when did you decide to launch MUD cosmetics

in your store?

J. Just this year I met MUD at UMAE and straight away I

realized the potential of the products in the film industry.

I was so impressed by their quality and versatility. MUD

was also looking for a representative for the UK and I think

they understood and shared our passion for education

and training.

K. After hearing from make-up artists that have used

the products and wanted us to have it available, we were

convinced that it was a good fit.

What is your favorite MUD product and why?

J. This is difficult because I like so many... I love the colors for

face shading and the clear Brow Fix, if you mix it with any eye

color, you have a mascara of that color... genius!

K. Right now I am currently in love with the Highlight/Shadow

palette. We are doing major transformations including gender

change looks so this is an invaluable part of the kit.

Tell us about your most challenging project?

J. I was asked to take over the film Agora, a period film

with Rachel Weisz 3 days before principal photography

was to start. I received a phone call from the producer

offering me the job on a Thursday evening. My agent

did the deal on Friday. I packed to travel to Malta for 5

months on Saturday. I read the script on the plane on

Sunday, and shot with principle actors and a thousand

extras on the Monday!

I had to play catch up for the next 5 months, which would

have been more difficult had it not been for my amazing

make-up team and the brilliant Spanish assistant director

department. Even though it was stressful, I had the best

time. To top it off, I won a Goya (Spanish Oscar) for my

designs on the film.

K. For me, the most challenging project feels like the

one I am working on at the moment. We only get 5 days

to change 6 characters into well known singers which

involves wigs, teeth, contacts and prosthetics.

What celebrities have you had the opportunity to

work with?

J. I’m so lucky to have worked with so many. I’ve made up

Jennifer Lawence in X Men, Kevin Bacon also in X Men,

Rachel Weiz, Thandie Newton, Vanessa Redgrave, Charlotte

Rampling and Toni Collette, just to name a few.

K. I really enjoyed really enjoyed working on A Young Doctor’s

Notebook with Daniel Radcliffe.

Do you think professional education is important to

become a make-up artist or is it primarily about the

talent and practice?

J. I think professional education is vital. There are so many

skills you need to know, straight make-ups, period make-

ups, application of small prosthetics haircutting and wigs.

There is also an etiquette required when working on film

sets and in make-up trailers that you can only learn from

the right training.

K. I agree, all of these things are important!

What advice would you like to give young starts in the

make-up world?

J. You have to be passionate as you have many skills to learn.

If you want to work in the film and television, hairdressing is

just as important as make-up.

K. It’s a great job that’s both rewarding and challenging. In

order to be successful, you must persevere.

interviews

Bernarda Oman Milena Zupancic

October 11th, 1959

After high school in 1981, Bernarda was accepted to the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television to study stage acting and the art of speech in Ljubljana. She completed her studies with the role of Ekspeditorica and Jacinta in Ivan Cankar’s Scandal in St. Florian Valley under the study of professor France Jamnik in 1985, graduating the following year.

Her first job at Prešeren Theatre in Kranj, Oman was a part of the Ljubljana City Theatre ensemble for twelve years. She has played in around 60 plays, movies and a host of TV drama series.

As an actress she impresses her audience by expressing a whirlwind of emotions raging within each character with little effort, while also playing a range of roles within a variety of genres. Working with different directors, Bernarda’s experience covers numerous award-winning characters.

November 15th, 1951

In her almost 40 years as an actor, Jožica Avbelj has performed in more than 90 theatre plays, over 20 films and in numerous series and radio plays. In 2006, she became a stage acting and artistic word instructor at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana, where she has been teaching since 1996.

Jožica Avbelj has never, not even in her early performances, played non-serious roles, but has always taken on characters of a complex and complicated nature.

When she was awarded with the Borštnik ring in 2001, Jernej Novak, a theatre critic, wrote: “Jožica Avbelj’s art of acting is fierce and full, always well-rounded into a meaningful whole. It seems that the actress’s life path is also such. This year’s Borštnik gathering, the first in this millennium, started off with a show that launched the first generation of Jožica Avbelj’s students. It is no coincidence that the day’s event was concluded by presenting the ring to an actress, whose art was born for the new millennium.”

December 18th, 1946

Milena Zupančič has played a variety of leading roles in film and theatre for over 40 years. Among numerous awards, she has been presented with the Pula Golden Arena, Borštnik ring (1999) and Prešeren award for sustainable contribution to development of Slovene culture (1993). This star actress of Ljubljana National Theatre Drama and UNICEF ambassador still carefully chooses her roles while fans have already considered her an icon of Slovene acting. “If acting is art, being an ambassador is life”, says Milena (source: portal Viva; www.viva.si)

“Being an actor is a privilege of nature, especially on stage where it’s very magical and changes you completely. Once you tread on them, you become a new person. Throw away the mask of every day, embrace all your differences, all that you hide and are ashamed of. When the magic is over, when theatre lights turn off, you once again put on your shell to hide your soft and sensitive core.” (Milena Zupančič for Jana magazine, June 12th, 2012)

Page 17: MUD ART newspaper fall winter 2013

When we were scheduling this interview, you were quite busy...

In the fall, I will play at least two if not four plays from the last and some previous seasons. I have filmed a short movie with the working title Where and a short TV play. At the academy, we are working on three productions: Maids, Caligula, Chairs (Unesco). In Croatia and Bulgaria we are doing a guest appearance with the theatrical realization of Storm. In Sofia, we will perform Comedy with Women, which is based on Heiner Müller poetry.

Your acting often extends over your national borders. What is your best memory as far as guest appearances or filming abroad?

Acting has given me a chance to visit many countries and encounter various cultures. I have been to Canada, USA, Australia, all over Europe. Memories that I keep closest to my heart are from recent guest appearances. I remember Paris and Napoli, where I played the leading role of Maria Calas from the melodrama Tosca. Director Matej Filipčič received an award for this play. Each country, each audience and each person I meet, leave a mark on me. I like being among people and communicating with them. I would point out Vienna as a cultural capital - there is always a lot of artists there, which for me is a special experience.

Best compliment ever received?

At our Tosca performance in France, the first row was reserved for children in wheelchairs. There was a boy accompanied by his parents. He could hardly sit in his chair and was making a disgruntled sound; he had serious balance troubles. At this point I was already on stage and had already made up a plan: if he continues to feel so uncomfortable, I will take off my flower broche that I had pinned on my dress, give it to him and chat with him a bit during my performance. But, when the play started, he calmed down completely and was at peace the whole time. After the show I met him and he said: “more, more.” This was the greatest award for my job.

Chemistry on stage? That can be a mystery. Is it something that just happens or can it be controlled?

Most of the time it just happens. Like love. But it can be influenced. You get partly prepared for it already at the academy and later in life you just try to stay as open to it as possible. It means you do not judge your co-actor on basis of his acting abilities. You perceive him as a person, a complex personality and take what he offers. I remember acting with a person who hated me. We played a couple who was in love. After the show there were many remarks that it was obvious, how well we got along. When you are acting a strong emotion, it does not matter what it is. This can be used well by acting. Usually, if you get along with the co-actor, the chemistry comes along easily. You only need to be open up and be receptive toward all feelings, positive or annoying. The audience will also feel this chemistry.

Were you drawn to any other career before you decided to become an actress?

I wanted to be a captain of a large ship. I was so sure of this that my father once brought home a mayor and claimed that at the time, Yugoslavian women could not be captains. Despite his professional arguments, I knew he was not telling the truth. I read an article in the newspaper about a woman, who became a captain and made all the news. This was one of my great disappointments. My parents probably had good intentions, since that is a very long and demanding study a very tiresome job.

How much does stage make-up help you get into the character?

It helps a lot. Exploring what make-up should be like is already a part of the process. When the actual interaction with the make-up artist starts, that is when nirvana starts for me, like meditation. When the artist starts working, you connect with the character. Make-up and hair are an important part of sliding into the role as well as during styling.

What does the time in the mask mean to you and that last glance in the mirror before facing the audience or camera?

This means I am ready. There is a new person in front of the mirror. I exit my life and enter the theatre. Usually, I am not rehearsing the script during this. By this time, I am ready for it. It often happens, that director changes the script right before the show. But, since I am already this person, on with the character, I remember it easily.

What are the characteristics of a good make-up artist?

I have met many make-up artists and was really lucky - some of them were exceptional. Her or his hands are magic. I can instantly sense whether the person is interested in me. You can see our connection on photographs. Most of the people in this profession are really great, regardless of the occasion - photo shoot, film, television. At the theatre we are also very lucky to cooperate with professionals, who teach us to apply make-up, so we can do it ourselves. I see myself through the eye of the make-up artist. This is something most intimate - to let somebody change your image. This change ignites courage in me over and over again.

Make-up is a part of your everyday life on the stage. How much do you use it in your private life?

I used to like it a lot. I still have a lot of it at home and I also carry it with me. But I have realized, I can also feel good without it. It is not about freeing myself, but about loving myself. My face is something special, boring but very grateful. When I wear make-up, everybody notices and is surprised how much it changes me. This makes me happy. I am glad my face responds to all kinds of make-up. I do like myself, so I do not take this boring look as a drawback. I feel great without make-up. I am not one of those who needs to wear it to leave the house. But there are certainly days when I want to dress nicely and apply make-up. I like how alterable my face is. I agree it is chameleonic.

What does it take for a woman to remain attractive at every age? What are your secrets?

There are no secrets, I will tell you everything. It is great if you have a person you love and loves you back. I’ve had this person for 38 years. Mutuality is the key. It is important that you love your job, and I do. Undoubtedly, you must do something for yourself. I have been practicing yoga occasionally, from the beginning. I am not obsessed to the extent of having to do it every day. I do Pilates, tai chi and chi gong. It is important to feel good. The sense of strength and my chi balanced is crucial. Since my health is stable, I am obviously doing something right. Work itself also gives me energy. It does, however, happen that there is a lot of work and sleep is sporadic. This can be exhausting. That is when there are a few stressful days, but with the love I feel for this profession, I get over it fast. The roles you play also give you a chance to cleanse yourself of negative energy. To return to the beginning of my answer - this cleansing reflects in good partner relations. I throw out negative emotions on stage and I come home freed.

You are known for strong, decisive, complex women roles… are these also your off stage characteristics?

I don’t know. I can be really stubborn and annoying, but I can also be very pleasant. I am extremely introverted. Due to my work I have learned to be more open. When I have a chance, I like to be in peace. I like painting. I love travelling, though my husband often has to remind me of it since I really like to stay at home when I have time off. Through the years I have calmed down and have accepted myself completely. Thus, I do not unnerve myself with what others think of me. Just take me as I am. I do not burden myself with as much work as I used to and I do not let anybody else burden me either. I wish to have my own chapter. I plan to still experience a lot, but in my own tempo. I have chosen comfort, which I want to enjoy.

Bernarda Oman

To me, stage make-up is the link between my private life and stage acting.

Actors are usually very busy. Are you rehearsing for anything now?

June is already semi-holiday for actors and for the first time in 30 years, I’m not rehearsing so this month has been a gift. I have performances and guest appearances and I will travel to Israel, but at the time I am not studying for any new plays, which means I will also be partly free in September. I can’t remember this ever happening to me before. I hope to make the best out of this spare time.

At my age, I am somewhat less busy as I used to be. An actor cannot influence this individually, since directors and artistic directors make decisions about roles. Also, women characters for my age are not in abundance.

Which of your roles, so far, are you most proud of?

It is difficult to choose one, but I can name a few that I really loved to play. These are Yelena Andreevnain Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, Marianne in Bergman’s Scenes and Emma in Pinter’s Betrayal. For all of these, I can say I am satisfied with what I was able to bring to the performance.

Your acting often extends over our national borders. What is your best memory as far as guest appearances or filming abroad?

I have filmed a lot in Croatia, in Zagreb. I always felt well in the former Yugoslavia, when I was working with, at the time, Jadran film in Belgrade. Unfortunately, since the country has disintegrated, acting in this area has diminished considerably. I was young then and felt I could have still done a lot there.

Chemistry on stage? That can be a mystery. Is it something that just happens or can it be controlled?

It happens, but you have to control it. If it doesn’t, you can always act it out. Sometimes such emotions happen unwillingly. You can fall in love with a co-actor, but you professionally tame it-but this rarely happens.

Have you ever thought about directing? Were you drawn to any other career before you decided to become a theatre actress?

I was never interested in directing, not even today. I was always drawn to everything that has to do with people; psychiatry, social work, health care, working with children. I fulfill these interests through acting. Every character I play, I want to analyze and argue all the states the characters go through. My choice for acting was swift. I was in a circle of young people who suddenly decided to enroll at the Academy (Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television) and luckily, many of us were accepted.

How much does stage make-up help you get into the character?

Personally, a lot. It slowly sets me into the character and guides me to the beginning of the play. It directs me. I can’t imagine coming to the theatre and directly stepping onto the stage. That would be too much of a switch and I would be disrupted.

To me, stage make-up is the link between my private life and stage acting. When filming, make-up is even more important and lasting because an actors’ look is taken care of by a make-up artist. That gives me time to relax and let my thoughts wander. In the theatre, we often have to put make-up on ourselves.

What does the time in the mask mean to you and that last glance in the mirror before facing the audience or camera?

I have always had a very personal relationship with the make-up artist, so this time means a lot to me. It relaxes me. It is a kind of nirvana, allowing me to concentrate solely on the character and role.

What are the characters of a good make-up artist?

Professionalism is most important to me. At the beginning of my career, I worked with the late Berta Meglič – she was a great make-up artist for that time in former Yugoslavia and abroad. She showed me the importance of a great attitude and how to behave in the make-up room. I know that when the make-up starts, I have to take care of her or his work. I only drink with a straw, never eat heavy food, I do not lean my head on anything so I do not ruin my hair… Before the shoot I try to get as much sleep as possible. Berta taught me how to get rid of negative thoughts.

Make-up artists can calm me down and give me confidence. I ask them to look at my shots and comment on them - but of course, only if the artits are good and I trust them. When filming bigger roles, I always relied on make-up artist’s opinions. Even when others thought the take was fine and done and just the make-up artist was not satisfied, I asked to do it again. I could say they took care of me all day and I enjoy having their particular attention.

At shorter film and photo shoots I often meet make-up artists that are not very skilled with little experience. When they don’t bring a comb or cape, it seems very unprofessional to me. While many artists think they are make-up artists because they know how to apply make-and many of them do, they actually eat away the work for real professionals because they are hired at a lower rate.

Your team however, has completely fulfilled my expectations and gained my trust.

Make-up is a part of your everyday life on the stage. How much do you use it in your private life?

Off stage I use make-up moderately. I hardly leave the house without foundation or tinted face cream. I always define my eyebrows. I find it nice to emphasize beauty with make-up, while not overdoing it. At home, I never wear make-up.

What does it take for a woman to remain attractive and feminine through all stages of life? What are your secrets of graciousness and youthful looks?

There is no recipe. Internal satisfaction and calmness within is key. It is important to remain open and positive and to be able to cope with situations that come your way. The work that I love doing brings me personal satisfaction. Being in a bad mood and ignorance surely doesn’t help.

You are known to have played various character roles. When off stage or camera, are you also so slick in reacting to different situations and adaptive?

My acting profession does not help me in this. Sometimes I’m able to avoid something, other times I don’t. It depends on my daily mood so I can’t really say I knowingly transmit my professional skills into my personal life.

“”

Page 19: MUD ART newspaper fall winter 2013

When we were scheduling this interview, you were quite busy. Are you rehearsing for anything new at the moment?

In this profession it always happens that suddenly you are so busy you can hardly hold on to yourself and then a calmer period follows. At the moment I am in the busy period. I should not complain. In theatre, I’m rehearsing for a new show, which is to premiere this September. I play with two great Slovene theatre names, Boris Cavazza and Radko Polič. Preparations are quite demanding, due to extensive script. What seems simple at first glance, turns out to be the exact opposite. Same goes for this show. Recently I did a guest appearance with Croatian national theatre in Spain with the show War and Peace. I also worked on some short films. Actually there is so much acting that I can hardly keep track.

Which of your roles, so far, are you most proud of?

I can’t say because I was lucky to have had many good roles, which I have and would do again the same way. There was one however, that has moved me the most and touched my heart. It was Šeligo’s Wedding, the role of Lenka, simply because everything came together in perfect timing. It was a wonderful role, an extraordinary show and above all, I was pregnant. I was fulfilled as an actress and as a woman during my greatest moment.

Your acting extends over your national boarder. What are your best memories of guest appearances or filming abroad?

In this case, too, I was lucky enough to have worked everywhere. I performed a lot in the former Yugoslavia. I have a hard time remembering all the places I have been to, but I do remember Mexico, Korea, USA and all of Europe. I can’t name my favorite because I enjoyed every place I visited. I am the kind of person who decides ahead to have a pleasant time, no matter where I go and I like meeting new people while getting to know new places.

Best compliment ever received?

One must be very careful with compliments and accept them with a humble attitude. Of course, some are very memorable. A certain Russian critic wrote that a theatre with such an actress as me is blessed. In Mexico, a critic brought a poem devoted to me to a press conference. Praise flatters me, surely. After all, an actor’s profession is not hidden behind four walls.

Chemistry on stage. Is it something that happens or can it be controlled?

I say that it happens and that it can be controlled. I found that who you work with is very important. You know exactly who you have stage chemistry with. You feel when your co-actor has that chemistry with you; he simply suits your skin. There are no rules here. This energy either exists or it does not. It is inexplicable. The chemistry between stage and audience is also important.

How much does make-up help you get into the role?

I used to do my own make-up for a considerable time in my career. That to me was useful, because it was a kind of transformation for me. For the last few years I have had a make-up artist in the theatre. Make-up is even more helpful on film than in theatre. I had a splendid make-up artist, the late Berta Meglič. I have learned so much from her and we had a wonderful relationship. She never missed a single take behind camera and just looking at each other we could tell each other a lot. With her doing my make-up I could slide into my role completely. A few times, the make-up didn’t really work well which is quite unpleasant for an actor. Besides good make-up, the lightning is also important. I often tell young actors they should, more than with the director, bond with the make-up artist and the lightning technician.

What does the time you spend in make-up and that last glimpse in the mirror, before facing the stage or camera mean to you?

The time in make-up is pure pleasure to me. I can read over the script in my mind or with my co-actors, if the situation allows it. It’s also time for me to get calm and concentrate. With my last glimpse in the mirror I make sure my make-up is impeccable. But, it is no longer the time for inspiration; it is the time when I am absolutely ready to face the stage or camera.

What are the key characteristics of a good make-up artist?

A great make-up artist must feel that each face and person is different. They can tell what looks good on someone, cover up the imperfections and make the beautiful features stand out. On the contrary, less experienced artist simply reuse the same methods, which doesn’t make you feel very best. The lack of skill also can be seen if they use the same make-up for both young and older actresses since older skin requires less layers and a more delicate application.

Make-up is part of your everyday life on stage. How much do you use it in your private life?

When you are young, you basically don’t need make-up. It is sad to see young women, covering up their youth and freshness. The older you get, the harder you face the public with a bare face. I at least use mascara. I would point out the Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann, known for her beauty. Still today she defies her age successfully. Without surgeries, which I don’t oppose to under reasonable extent, her special glow still resonates real beauty.

What does it take for a woman to remain attractive at every age?

It is crucial to remain curious; that’s what keeps you interesting. A cheerful face, even when not feeling great, is the key. I have travelled a lot through countries, where people live hard lives. It is wonderful to see them smiling constantly. This attitude positively affects me, too. Every woman should know that later in life, what’s most important is your posture, your attitude and your behavior. She should be mindful of what she accepts and how to divide the world around her.

Film or theatre?

Both are equally interesting. If I really had to choose, I would say theatre, because you can create more. You are the author of your role and are with her at all times, even when the director is already gone. I often say it is rare for a film actor to become a good theatre actor. There are exceptions, but they are rare.

Have any of the bigger Hollywood productions shown interest in you? Have you ever dreamt of Hollywood?

When I was much younger, films I played in were often presented at big festivals. These opportunities brought on such invitations, but honestly, I had no need to accept them. I had a lot of work, I was not missing anything and I was happy. I never expected circumstances like the Yugoslavia disintegrating to change so much. For us actors, this was a real tragedy. Suddenly a 20 million audience diminished to 2 million.

You were very well known already at the beginning of your career. How did you cope with this fame? How much has it interfered with your personal life?

I have always felt the responsibility of having been chosen. It was clear to me that at least five actresses want the same role. When the director chose me, I had to justify his trust. I also feel responsible when expressing public opinion. I have never been politically active, but as a publicly known figure, I have never hidden my point of view. I have received some offensive anonymous messages, but you get used to it eventually. I would say I am a people’s person and that I like socializing. Since I am in this profession, I am also ready for people to stop me in the street and usually I like that. Although, sometimes I wish I were invisible - but only sometimes.

It is crucial to remain curious; that’s what keeps you interesting.

contouring, but of course, with more intensive application

you can add more drama to every look. And it’s not only

about contouring the face, I highly recommend you to

try it as an eye shadow. It brings perfect balance with

other colors and gives a natural fresh shading. Needless

to say, this wonderful bronzer will wake anyone’s face in

Artist's favorite - Mascara

One of my favorite and most versatile MUD products that I use both on fashion sets and clients is the MUD Volumizing Mascara. It is a cream

based mascara that adds intensity to the lashes. It’s buildable and creamy texture is perfect for giving the eyes a touch of drama. The most unique

feature of this product is its functional tube packaging. The design of the tube allows for the product to be easily squeezed out onto the MUD

stainless steel palette for an easy and hygienic application. My favorite way to apply is with the #500 Mini Fan Brush, which easily applies the

creamy product evenly from the lash root to tip.

FACECaring for your brushes

Few tips to help care for your brushes:

1. To preserve brushes, clean regularly with a professional brush cleaner.

2. While cleaning brushes, only dip the bristles in the cleaner and wipe off the product with a tissue.

3. To prevent the glue under the ferrule from loos-ening, do not let the brush cleaner go beyond the bristles or set the brushes in the cleaner for a long period of time. Shape bristles back to the original form and lay flat to dry.

4. To preserve the shape, lay brushes against the skin rather than pushing bristles directly onto the skin when applying product.

Description: Beauty Essentials is designed as an introduction to beauty make-up with an emphasis on the techniques required in today’s multi-faceted industry. Regardless of which area of make-up inspires your passion, mastery of beauty make-up is a must.

In this course you will start by learning facial analysis, base matching and application, correction, contours and highlights. You will then move on to color, focusing on eye and lip application. The course concludes with complete make-up applications ranging from one hundred percent corrective to natural make-up.

The Beauty Essentials course acts as a pre-requisite to the High Fashion Make-up Trends, Avant-Garde, Bridal Make-up, Studio Make-up and Airbrush courses. Please be advised that this course, when taken on its own, does not lead to an occupational outcome.

Level I. Studio Courses

Beauty Essentials

Recognizing the need of working make-up artists and other industry professionals to be able to broaden and increase their knowledge, Make-Up Designory has created a series of part-time courses. These courses are held conveniently at MUD’s main campuses, MUD studios and Partner Schools throughout the country and internationally.

MUDJoy Prom in Las Vegas

The true stars of the night couldn’t be found on the

Vegas Strip, but instead at the M Casino and Spa at the

4th Annual Joy Prom. This event celebrates those with

special needs with a prom of their own-and this isn’t just

any prom. It’s truly a night of glitz, glamour and smiles

that make you warm inside. A night to remember, Joy

Prom is special for disabled individuals who may not

have been able to attend their own prom because of their

disability, and has become so popular that the attendees

are chosen through a lottery process.

MUD participated in the festivities by giving the ladies a

boost of confidence with a makeover, a tiara and a few

products to touch up their look throughout the night.

The MUD volunteers pampered the ladies just before the

attendees walked the red carpet. The gentlemen weren’t

forgotten as they were presented with a top hat and a shoe

shine from the University of Las Vegas football team. Once

the participants hit the red carpet, they were cheered on

by the UNLV dance team, a local cheerleading squad and

photographed by professional photographers. They were

then greeted by various beauty queens, including Miss

Wheelchair, just before they hit the dance floor. From TV

crews to the Las Vegas Fire Department, every volunteer

couldn’t help but smile as the excitement filled the room.

IMATS 2013/ Kazuhiro Tsuji

Make-Up Designory kicked off the 39th International

Makeup Artists Trade Show in Pasadena, New York and

London, unveiling the latest works of Kazuhiro Tsuji. If you’re

not familiar with the name, you’re definitely familiar with his

work, which has been part of award-winning films such as

Planet of the Apes, and the unforgettable characters from

How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

A short documentary film, “Dream Out Loud,” directed by

Deverill Weekes and Juliet Landau, Miss Juliet Productions,

gave a touching insight into the story behind the artist.

Shortly after the documentary, guests were escorted in to

get an up close and personal view of the finished product of

his latest work, an Abraham Lincoln bust. Guests marveled

at the works of the humble artist that could only express

how much he loves what he does for a living.

Make-Up Institute Prague

Make-Up Institute Prague is considered a ground-breaking

institute providing the highest quality and largest education

centers in the industry. With an immense love for art, aesthetics

and the philosophy that emphasizes conceptual deepening of

observation, it is a hub for imagination and creativity.

All courses are delivered by top make-up artists in the field that

combine both make-up techniques and the unique styling.

Make-up studies are the central focus at the school while

preparing students with the skills needed for the industry

and labor market. There is an established agency that also

provides the placement service for graduates when searing

for opportunities for private events, television, productions,

fashion shoots, plays and movies.

For a long time, they had been searching for a quality make-

up product that would meet their regulated requirements as

an educational leader in the Czech Republic.

“When we first encountered MUD, we had the feeling we

found what we were hoping for. Our staff’s response to

MUD’s quality make-up products and its connection with

make-up studies, made us realize that this is the product

we want to work with. We try and do as much as possible

to give our students a sense of belonging even after

graduation - the feeling of family. And that is the feeling we

get from MUD.”

MUD Germany

MUD products are now also available throughout Germany.

Products can be found in the retail as well as in the

professional market in Germany. A growing number of make-

up artist schools decided to use our products for their classes

as well. Our products went through the approval procedure

of the German National TV and are now used in live shows

as well as in the movie production. We are very intensively

working on the market in order to make the products

available for everyone in every major city. If you are interested
