CURLIN COLT TOPS FASIG-TIPTON SALEBy Ron Mitchell and Claire Novak
There were no surprises July 19 when Fasig-Tipton
kicked off the yearling season with its selected sale in
Lexington as the 8 1/2-hour sale mirrored results seen
at most North American sales the last two years: strong
demand for the better offerings and weakness at other
price levels that led to a high buyback rate.
Fasig-Tipton reported 183 horses were sold for
gross receipts of $15,756,500, down 21.2% from the
$20,005,000 paid last year for 205 yearlings. The $86,101
average represented a decline of 11.8% from 2015 and
the median fell from $77,000 to $60,000. The 110 horses
that did not sell represented an RNA rate of 37.5%, com-
pared with 28.8% last year.

Curlin—Franscat colt tops the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale at $475,000
BLOOD-HORSE DAILY PAGE 2 OF 17WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2016Download the FREE smartphone app
"Buyers are selective; that is no surprise," said
Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. "There is tremen-
dous competition on the horses they perceive as the
better and best offerings and there is less competition
than you would hope on the horses they perceive to be
not highly desirable."
Browning said the high RNA rate also reflects the re-
alization by sellers that there are fall yearling sales they
can point to or wait for 2-year-olds in training sales or
even race their buybacks.
The sale-topper was a son of Curlin purchased by
Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds for $475,000. Con-
signed by St. George Sales, agent, the colt is a half
brother to stakes winners Swinger's Party and Hubba
Shake and from the extended female family of Ogygian,
Honour and Glory, and Lookinforthebigone.
The colt was bred in Florida by Miller Racing. Randy
Hartley said the colt will be owned in partnership by
Hartley/DeRenzo with Mike Hall and Sam Ross of Breeze
Easy Stable. The colt will be consigned to the 2017
Fasig-Tipton March selected 2-year-olds in training sale
at Gulfstream Park and if he does not bring a price with
which the partners are comfortable, he will be raced.
"We knew we were going to have to pay a lot for
him," Hartley said. "The sale is getting pretty strong here
at the end. He's got the whole package."
A bay colt by Tapit from a stakes-laden female family
was bought by Cromwell Bloodstock for $450,000 as the
second-highest priced purchase.
The colt, consigned as Hip 263 by Ashview Farm, was
bred in Kentucky by Ashview and Colts Neck Stables. He
is out of the stakes-placed Bluegrass Cat mare Ithinki-
sawapudycat, a half sister to Canadian champion Spring
in the Air.

Rather than trying to pinhook him into a 2-year-olds
in training sale, the colt will be raced by a partnership
that will be put together, Bell said.
While some buyers found the bidding to be compet-
itive, Aron Wellman, one of the leading buyers through
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, said the July sale is an
effective place to buy.
"I think that this is a great opportunity to buy quality
horses because people tend to keep their money in their
pockets waiting for Saratoga and (Keeneland) Septem-
ber," Wellman said. BH

FROMMER GOES BACK TO UNCLE MOBy Alastair Bull
Fresh from some big successes at the Florida
2-year-old sales, South Carolina pinhooker
Cary Frommer had a busy day reinvesting in new
stock at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale.
Frommer topped the buyers' list at the sale,
spending $750,000 on eight yearlings.
Her most expensive buy was a $250,000 Uncle
Mo—Flowers Athefinish filly from the Dromoland
Farm consignment.
Frommer has had great success with Un-
cle Mo colts this year. One that she bought for
$150,000 last year sold for $1.3 million at the
Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale, and her
$90,000 yearling purchase by the same sire sold
for $1 million at the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale.
Close behind Frommer was Hartley/De Renzo
Thoroughbreds, which spent $740,000 on three
purchases, including $475,000 on the sale-top-
ping Curlin—Franscat colt. BH

DEEP IMPACT PAIR TOP FOAL SALEBy Myra Lewyn
A pair of foals by Deep Impact each sold to the same
buyer for ¥280,000,000 ($2,724,400), the overall high-
est price of the two-day JRHA select sale, which closed
July 12 with records in overall gross and average price.
There were 390 yearlings and foals sold from 479
offered July 11-12 at Northern Horse Park for record
receipts of ¥14,942,100,000 ($147,437,068), an increase
of 13% on last year. The overall average rose 15% to a
record ¥38,310,000 ($378,044). The clearance rate came
in at 81.4%.
Eclipsing the highest yearling price of ¥260,000,000
($2.6 million) for a son of Deep Impact the previous day,
a colt by the leading sire out of French classic winner
Elusive Wave, born March 18, was sold to Hajime Satomi,
who later struck for a paternal half brother out of mul-
tiple Argentine group I winner Malpensa, born Jan. 28,
equaling the sale-topping price.
Both colts were offered by Katsumi Yoshida's North-
ern Farm, as was Monday's session topper. Satomi is
chairman of computer company Sega-Sammy.
Satomi outbid Coolmore's M.V. Magnier for the colt
out of 2009 Prix d'Essai des Pouliches (Fr-I, French Two
Thousand Guineas) victress Elusive Wave, who has
produced five foals, including two winners from three
foals of racing age. Her first foal, Brandybend (Galileo), is
listed-placed in England.
Magnier bought Elusive Wave for 800,000 guineas
($1,309,896) as a 4-year-old at the 2010 Tattersalls De-
cember mare sale. Yoshida later acquired her in a private
transaction and she was exported to Japan in 2013 in
foal to Frankel.
Satomi's other top-priced purchase Tuesday is the
fourth foal from Malpensa, a daughter of Orpen who
won three group I events in her native Argentina. Her
first foal, Satono Diamond, won a group III stakes at Kyo-
to in February before two classic placings for Satomi. He
was third in the Satsuki Sho (Jpn-I, Japanese Two Thou-
sand Guineas) before finishing second by a nose in the
Tokyo Yushun (Jpn-I, Japanese Derby).
Tuesday's third highest price of ¥240,000,000
($2,335,200) was for a son of Deep Impact out of Man-
dela, an Acatenango half sister to English and French
group I winner Manduro, bought by Ryouichi Ootuka
from Northern Farm. The foal is a full brother to multiple
Japanese group winner World Ace, runner-up in the 2012
Japanese Guineas.
Northern Farm also presented the day's best-selling
filly, the first foal from Dylan Thomas' Italian group I win-
ner Final Score. Hidenori Futagi bought the daughter of
Deep Impact for ¥155,000,000 ($1,508,150).
Gross and average at the foal session was up 12%
and 19%, respectively, compared with last year. There
were 173 foals sold from 232 offered for total receipts of
¥6,811,500,000 ($66,131,068), an average of ¥39,372,832
($382,261). The clearance rate was 74.6%. BH

With the effort, Power Jam earned
a 122 Equibase Speed Figure, the
top number for any runner this past
week.
The 4-year-old Concord Point
ridgling, trained by Bob Baffert, has
improved his speed figure in each
of his three races but he's had long
breaks between each of those starts.
After a debut win Feb. 14, 2015 at
Santa Anita, Power Jam didn't race
again until Nov. 8 at Del Mar. After
finishing a close second in that start,
Power Jam didn't make his 2016
debut until his July 10 score. Power
Jam has been the favorite in each of
his starts. BH
POWER JAM DAZZLES AT SANTA ANITA PARKBy Frank Angst
If Power Jam can bounce back from his recent splen-
did sprint win July 10 at Santa Anita Park, a stakes
try figures to be on the horizon.
In the final race of the Santa Anita spring meet,
Kaleem Shah's Power Jam showed good early speed
racing along the rail and then responded when
tested in the stretch by Rocket Fuel and Gutsy Ruler,
drawing off in the final furlong of the 5 1/2-furlong
allowance-optional claiming race for a 1 3/4-length
victory under Stewart Elliott. Power Jam completed
the race in a track-record time of 1:01.71.

BROTHER TO SILVER WAGON SEEKS FIRST WINBy Alastair Bull
Silverdollardreams has some family history to live
up to when he contests a 2-year-old maiden race
at Indiana Grand Race Course July 13.
So far the Wagon Limit—So Ritzy mating has pro-
duced two stakes-winning colts, who both showed
some serious longevity on the racetrack.
Silver Wagon won the Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) at 2,
was graded-placed at 3 and 4, won a grade III race
at 5, and returned at 6 for another top-level success,
the Carter Handicap (gr. I). He won seven races in all
and earned $1,162,193.
Silverdollardreams' other stakes-winning brother
Rehoboth didn't win above listed level, but he was
the epitome of toughness. He raced every season
from 2 to 8 and won 16 races from 77 starts. He won
in all but his 4-year-old season, and took five races as
an 8-year-old. Bred in Florida by Mr. and Mrs. Leverett S. Miller,
Silverdollardreams is owned by Warner Thorough-
breds and trained by Michael Maker. He finished
second, beaten by a head, behind Crackin Jon at Bel-
terra Park in his debut June 23. He is a 7-2 morning
line chance for Wednesday's race, in which Fernando
De La Cruz will ride him.
Favored at 7-5 is Stage Show, a Salute the Sarge
gelding trained by Steve Asmussen. Southern Equine
Stables bred Stage Show out of Show Me the Stage
(Slew the Surgeon), a winner of four grade III races.
To date, Show Me the Stage has produced seven
winners from eight starters, including the stakes-
placed Show Elle Thestage. BH

MORE CHANGE TO PA BREEDING FUND LEGISLATIONBy Tom LaMarra
The Pennsylvania Senate has passed a bill that in
part restores earlier language that governs the
state Thoroughbred breeding fund.
The measure was sent to the House of Represent-
atives and assigned to the House Rules Committee.
The House, by a 193-2 vote June 30, approved an
amended version of the bill that would give breeders
a larger percentage—50% and 30%, respectively—of
awards money for Pennsylvania-sired and -bred
horses that finish first, second, or third in any race in
the state.
The Senate Rules and Executive Nominations
Committee July 11 amended the bill yet again to
revert to its original language, which gives breed-
ers 30% for Pennsylvania-sired horses and 20% for
Pennsylvania-bred horses sired out of state.
The Senate version also directs the Pennsylva-
nia Horse Racing Commission, which falls under
the state Department of Agriculture, to continue
contracting with the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders
Association to oversee the breeding fund. The House
version of the bill changed the language to allow
the racing commission to contract with any entity it
chooses.
A window to alter the breeding fund splits opened
because language in an omnibus horseracing reform
bill signed into law in late February was deemed
problematic by the Department of Agriculture. BH

STAR FILLY HAS STRONG TURF PEDIGREE
Not content with conditioning Tepin, who
underlined her status as the best older turf
female in the country by winning the Queen
Anne Stakes (Eng-I) at Royal Ascot, trainer Mark
Casse affirmed that he also has the top turf
3-year-old filly with Catch a Glimpse in the Bel-
mont Oaks Invitational Stakes (gr. IT), her eighth
consecutive victory since breaking her maiden in
a Woodbine allowance event last August.
Catch a Glimpse served notice she might be
something special by
leading throughout
to land the Natal-
ma Stakes (Can-IIT)
by five lengths and
confirmed that sup-
position by taking the
Breeders' Cup Juve-
nile Fillies Turf (gr. IT).
The chestnut kicked
off the current cam-
paign with victories in
three grade III events
against her own sex
but stepped up to
defeat colts decisively
in the Penn Mile Stakes (gr. IIIT). The Belmont
Oaks—Catch a Glimpse's first grade I start since
the Breeders' Cup—set a new challenge, the 1
1/4 miles being her first beyond 1 1/16 miles,
one she proved capable of meeting.
Champion 2-year-old filly and Horse of the
Year in Canada last year, Catch a Glimpse followed
Eclipse Award winners Dayatthespa and Work All
Week as the third North American champion in
the space of two years for her sire City Zip. As that
indicates, City Zip has come a long way since retir-
ing to stand in New York at a fee of $7,500 in 2002.
Relocated to Lane's End Farm following the
deeds of his half brother Ghostzapper, City Zip
has turned out to be not only very successful,
but also more versatile than might have been
anticipated from a quick glance at his race-re-
cord. One of the surprises, perhaps due to the
influence of his broodmare sire Relaunch, is
how well his offspring have taken to grass. On
that surface he's responsible for not only Dayat-
thespa and Catch a Glimpse, but also grade I
winner Personal Diary and graded winners Alert
Bay, City to City, City Style, Get Serious, Unzip
Me, Gitchee Goomie, Acting Zippy, Gleam of
Hope, Stays in Vegas, and Workin for Hops.
Catch a Glimpse's distaff pedigree strongly
suggests turf would be her forte. Her dam Halo
River, by European
turf runner Irish
River, was a stakes
winner on the grass
and had previously
produced turf grad-
ed winner Old For-
ester. The second
dam All Hallows is
by another signifi-
cant turf influence
in Halo out of Leap
Lively, a Nijinsky II
daughter who was
a group winner
and placed third
in the Epsom Oaks (Eng- I). Leap Lively is also
dam of Forest Flower, heroine of the Goffs Irish
One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I), and fourth dam
of 2014 Qipco Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I)
victor, Night of Thunder. BH
