Students shouldn’t be the only ones to enjoy a Spring Break. This year, my family and I spent my sons’ Spring Break enjoying the wonders of Florida’s
West Coast. Just a few hours from home we were able to spend an afternoon riding roller coasters and coming face to face with jungle creatures at Busch Gardens, only to spend the evening watching the sun set over a beautiful beach. That brief getaway was just what I needed to recharge my batteries.
I came back to the office full of energy and memories of quality time spent with my family.
Wherever your travel plans take you, now or in the future, don’t forget to bring along a copy of Our City Weston or Town Times magazine. Send us your picture posing with the magazine and you could be our Photo of the Month winner.
In the coming weeks we will gather with our loved ones to celebrate the Easter and Passover holidays. For many of our readers, the holidays will not be a joyous time. They fear for their families as tensions rise in Venezuela under the communist dictatorship system. Please support our many Venezuelan neighbors and friends near and far as they fight to bring the current govern-ment regime to an end and let democracy rule.
Sincerely,
Sven Budzisch, Publisher/Owner

The MiraMar Police dePartMent becaMe the latest South Florida law enforcement agency to distrib-ute free SmartWater CSI kits to residents in order to
deter property crime and improve public safety. Hundreds of Miramar residents received their free kits at the United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 8th. The kits were paid for by Broward Crime Stoppers.
Known for reducing theft in local communities, SmartWater CSI provides a forensic coding technology in which residents or business owners mark their valuables with a clear, non-hazardous liquid. The liquid is invisible to the human eye, except under ultraviolet black light. Law enforce-ment officials can then take the smallest micro-fragment of SmartWater from stolen property and send it to their forensic laboratories where it can be analyzed to identify the owner.
Each resident received a small bottle of SmartWater, which they were told was enough to mark 60-70 items. They were also given a statement of registration to complete. Once registered, the Miramar Police Department and Crime Stoppers coordinate with SmartWater CSI to ensure all par-ticipating households are entered into the official SmartWater database.
“This is a critically important step because it is only through the database that police will be able to identify the owner of the stolen property if it is marked with SmartWater,” said Tania Rues, Public Information Officer for the Miramar Police Department.
SmartWater is guaranteed to remain on any item for at least five years and is virtually impossible to remove during
that time. Anything of value can be marked but the liquid is
most commonly used on jewelry and electronics since these items are most commonly stolen.
Longtime Miramar resident Frank Sampson said he is grateful to Crime Stoppers and the Miramar Police Department for implementing this program. “Although I have never been a victim of crime, quite a few of my neighbors have been,” said Sampson. “I sure hope this SmartWater reduces the crime in Miramar.”
Marvia Aitken, another Miramar resident, agreed. Aitken, who came to pick up her free kit with her three small children, said her home has been burglarized in the past. “I’m very happy to try SmartWater and hope that it makes a difference,” Aitken said.
Residents in Miramar who reside in the area bordered on the north by Pembroke Road, the east by the Florida Turnpike, the south by County Line Road and the west by University Drive can still pick up a kit at the Miramar Police Department. In order to receive a kit at no charge, proof of residency will be required (a driver’s license or utility bill). For more information on the product, please visit http://smartwatercsi.com/.

M iraMar will host its relay For Life event this month and organizers are still looking for
teams to come and join the annual over-night cancer-fighting effort. At least 25 teams, most comprised of City employees, are already signed on so there is still plenty of room for teams from other walks of life. “We are really trying to engage more teams from the community,” said Alexandra Rousseau, a Relay For Life Specialist with the Broward office of the American Cancer Society. “We are look-ing for teams from businesses, schools, clubs, churches, and families and friends.”
The 12-hour Relay For Life of Miramar will be held May 9-10 at the Ansin Sports Complex, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Teams will have the option of working within the event’s “Heroes” theme this year, mean-ing they can decorate their tents with their favorite superhero motif. It will be just the second time that Miramar’s Relay has not been held in coordination with stu-dents at Everglades High School, which was expected to hold its own relay earlier in the month. Rousseau said separating the events makes it easier for members of the community to become involved.
The Miramar Relay For Life will begin with a Survivors Dinner, which will be followed by the Survivor and Caregiver lap to help celebrate their victory over cancer. Rousseau says they are still looking for additional survivors to join them.
There is also a Luminaria Ceremony later in the evening to honor those who have been lost to the disease, or those whose fight continues.
Relay for Life got its start In 1985 when a Tacoma, Washington physician named Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society. A year later, 340 supporters joined him in the effort and it has grown ever since. Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries take part in the over-night community fundraising walk, which encourages teams of people to camp out around a track. Throughout the night, members of each team take turns walk-ing around the track.
The events are family-friendly and include food, entertainment and camara-
derie. Rousseau says it is never too late to sign up and join in. “We hope the com-munity comes out and supports the event. We would love to get more participation,” she said.
The Relay For Life of Miramar is scheduled for May 9-10 at the Ansin Sports Complex, located at 10801 Miramar Boulevard, 33025. Opening ceremonies will start at 6 p.m. The Survivors Lap will kick-off around 6:30 p.m. For more information about joining the Miramar Relay for Life, contact Alexandra Rousseau, Relay For Life Specialist at 954-200-7522 or email her at [email protected]

By cycling, or by running and walking, thousands of people came together recently at Miramar Regional Park to stay fit for a great cause. The 5th Annual Tour de Broward, presented by
z-Motion, returned to the park February 23.The five fitness and recreational event, which helped raise more
than $375,000, was held in support of the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood which helps both children and adults battling congenital heart disease. “Each year, we are pleased to see new supporters come out to participate in Tour De Broward,” said Kevin Janser, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer, Memorial Healthcare System in a written statement. ”We are grateful that our community continues to embrace this cause, which helps our pediatric patients who suffer from congenital heart disease.” “We’re proud to have been involved in such a wonderful event in support of a very meaningful cause,” added Eyal Lalo, president and CEO, Invicta Watch Group. Since the event’s inception in 2010, Tour de Broward has raised nearly $2 mil-lion dollars.
As many as 750 cyclists rode in the 50K and 100K cycling challenge, while the 5K Run drew 900 runners. An additional 1,000 people took part in the 3K Family Walk—many of whom were Heart Institute patients and their families. Aniqua hendricks, 18, has long been afraid of heights, but that didn’t stop her from doing a few high-wire moves on a 23-foot tall flying trapeze last summer. The high school senior from Miramar was the winner
of last year’s Ringleader Scholarship Program, which sent her for a two-week summer camp stint at Florida State University’s “Flying High” Circus program. “I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn another form of the arts and I was excited to try it out,” said Hendricks, a student at Archbishop McCarthy High School who’s interested in dancing, singing and poetry.
This year, the City of Miramar and UniverSoul Circus have expanded the unique scholarship program and will now offer scholarships to two 10th and 11th grade students who live in Miramar. Now beginning its second year, the “Mayor’s Ringleader Scholarships” creates an opportunity to benefit a prospective colle-gian while promoting the Circus as an art form. “It is absolutely a thrilling oppor-tunity for a student who has a high energy level, interest in physical opportunity and maybe interested in the performing arts because the UniverSoul Circus is not just animal acts and magic show. They are a number of cultural presentations within the performing arts arena too. It gives students another exposure to the performing arts,” said Valerie Williams, Education Program Coordinator at the Miramar Cultural Center.
Applications for the scholarship must be submitted no later than April 30. To apply, students must write an essay on the theme “I am a Ringleader: Becoming the Person Others Want to Follow.” The essay must be original work of the student and be under 500 words. The essay will be judged by a panel of four people on originality, organization, mechanics (spelling, grammar, etc), pertinence to the topic, terminology, clearness of topic presentation and word count.
At stake, a chance for the scholarship winners and one chaperone for each to be provided round trip air-fare and hotel accommodations with breakfast for 13 days. During those two weeks, the winners will attend the “Flying High” Circus camp in Tallahassee, learning acts that include flying and static trapeze, trampo-line, juggling, rope swings and more. “I was surprised I had the chance because so many people applied,” said Hendricks. “But I’m really glad I did it.”
Entries are limited to students in grades 10 or 11 who live in Miramar and who will not be 18 years of age before August. Applications must be submitted before April 30th. For more information, call 954-602-4521 or email [email protected].

Let’s Clarify the BB&T Proposal As of late, there has been a lot of misinformation spread about the BB&T proposal. It’s time for a clarification! The Broward County Commis-sion decided that it wanted an arena and a professional sports franchise 20 years ago.
To pay the debt service on the BB&T Center, a two cent
sales tax was levied on tourists who stay in our hotels. An agreement was reached to guarantee that at least $8 million per year from the tourist development tax would go towards paying down that debt of over $450 million. This tourist development tax has nothing to do with property taxes on Broward County residents. These funds are from visitors who come to Broward County and pay taxes on local hotel rooms.
In addition, the arena operators were to pay $4.6 million annually of the debt service, as well as revenue share for any profits made over $12 million at a rate of 80 percent for the arena operators and 20 percent to Broward County. Broward County owns the BB&T Center; therefore, the remaining $250 million debt is ours, not private inves-tors. The Broward County Commission hired the arena operators to manage the daily operations of the building, coordinate shows and the professional sports franchise, the Florida Panthers.
The arena operators have stated that they have been losing $35 million per year and expressed that level of financial loss could not be sustained by the team’s new operators. Because of this, they requested changes to some of the agreements and economic terms in order to “create a sustainable model for the BB&T Center that is comparable to other NHL venues, significantly reduce losses on a consolidated basis, and provide for a com-petitive hockey team and first class concerts and shows.”
Their request asks the County Commission to allocate an additional portion of the tourist development tax to-wards their portion of the debt service. This would allow them to be more profitable, thereby having the ability to revenue-share with the county sooner. The team would also repay loans from the county immediately and con-tribute to the local convention and visitor’s bureau.
The arena operators have also asked Broward County to bring the insurance for the arena under the county’s umbrella policy to save $1.7 million per year in insur-ance cost. We requested guidance so the commission agreed to have an outside consultant and auditor review the proposal to see what’s in our best interest to protect our asset; that will take 60 to 90 days. No decision has been made in terms of the proposal.
The BB&T Center is the largest arena in Florida and the second largest in the southeast. The arena is a major economic driver for our county; creating jobs, tourism, sales tax, support for charitable causes and support for local businesses. I understand that arguments can be made for and against
using public money for a professional sports franchise. However; this argument usually takes place before an arena is built. In Broward County’s case, the County has already built the arena for a major league sport and is less than halfway through the economic life of that investment.
Whether we have the Panthers and arena operators there or not, we will still have to pay for the building. Broward County must ensure the continued economic viability of the arena to ensure payment of outstanding bonds that were issued to finance the arena’s construc-tion. In addition, the expectation is that without the sports team there it would devalue the building 73 percent to $60 million and the BB&T Center could be empty for six months out of the year. The negotiations are ongoing and I will ensure a decision is made that is in the best interest of Broward County.

Later this Month, the city of MiraMar will Play host to soMe of the finest track and field athletes in the Caribbean and the U.S. As many as 1,000 athletes are expected to come together to compete in the 3rd Annual
South Florida Multicultural Games, an annual event designed to highlight both world caliber runners and the City’s renowned athletic facilities. “Every year, our event grows,” said Billy Neal, the Athletic Coordinator with the City of Miramar.
Sponsored by Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis and the City of Miramar Parks & Recreation Department, the 3rd Annual South Florida Multicultural Games will be held April 28 at the Ansin Sports Complex. The event will feature athletes from the University of Technology, Jamaica, which has an impressive list of alumni including Olympic champions Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell. Neal says students from FAU, FIU, University of Miami, Bethune-Cookman University, Florida Memorial, Canada and China and others will also compete. For anyone who loves the sport, it will be an event to remember. “Spectators who come out can expect to see some of the top athletes in the world competing against one another,” he said.
In addition to showcasing the track and field athletes, the event also puts the
spotlight on Miramar which is determined to draw new international events to its athletic facilities. “Miramar continues to make its mark upon the track & field world with premier events such as this taking place on our world class track at Ansin,”
said Miramar Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis. “I have no doubt that Miramar someday will witness a world record performance on our track. The event truly highlights the caliber of athletes through-out the Caribbean and in the U.S.”
The games are being held immediately after the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania, the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States. Neal says the City planned the date of their Multicultural Games to entice teams who are heading through South Florida on the way home to come and participate. Down the road, they also hope to incorpo-rate other athletic components, including soccer.
The 3rd Annual South Florida Multicultural Games will be held April 28 at the Ansin Sports Complex, located at 10801 Miramar Boulevard. The Opening
Ceremony will start at 3:00 p.m. Field events will begin at 12:00 p.m. and track events will start at 4:00 p.m.. Admission for spectators is free. The Process of getting your hoMe ready to be listed for sale on the market goes beyond the two most important aspects of simply finding the correct Realtor
to sell your home and setting the price right. Sellers generally want their home to sell quickly and, in the process, maximize the amount they receive for the property. However, very few of these sellers even think about prepping their home for that
“easy sale.” Sellers have a great deal of control over how their property is perceived. There are quite a number of things that
you as a seller can do to prepare your home for sale and to maximize its value in the eyes of prospective buyers. Below are just a few tips on preparing to sell your home.
Before preparing your home for sale, prepare yourself first. Learn to separate your emotions from the selling process. I admit this is very difficult to do; however, it is best if you totally disconnect. You should not look at this as your home, but as a product that you need to market and sell for the highest possible price. Do not take Realtor and prospective buyer opinions of the home personally.
While getting accustomed with the mindset of detaching your emotions from the sale, it is also best to start thinking of de-personalizing the property. This may seem harsh, but a buyer tends to visualize the property as his or hers, and not yours. This can be accomplished by removing family portraits, personal photos and other personal items that could distract the buyer that is viewing the property.
Another selling advantage is to totally de-clutter. Buyers want to get a good feel for the layout and space within the house. Cluttered closets and garages are a big turn-off to buyers.
Beating your competition with condition is another important factor. Repair everything that needs maintenance, from the leaking faucet to repainting to cover the nicks and scratches on the walls from the everyday wear and tear. A com-plete home inspection is recommended, so that you can identify any issues and repair them beforehand.
Now, let’s revisit the number one aspect that counts in selling your home. A seller needs to get real about the pricing. Today’s buyers are very educated about the market and the comparable sales within the area, which heavily influ-ence the fair market value of your home. Have your Realtor do a comparable market analysis and price the property right from the onset. The old adage of sellers pricing above the fair market value to leave room to negotiate just doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it? Price it correctly so that you can have the maximum amount of interest and possibly create a situation where you will have multiple offers on the property.

Every year, over 3 Million school days in the United States are missed because of conjunctivitis – also known as “pink eye” – according to a recent study.
Conjunctivitis is the term used to describe inflammation of the thin, clear membrane that covers the inside of your eyelids and the white part of your eye (the sclera). Pink eye can be caused by viral infections, bacterial infections and allergic reactions.
Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis can be quite contagious, and both are easily spread through contact with nose or eye secretions, usually through hand-to-eye contact or poor contact lens care. Pink eye is often spread in school and day care settings.
Good hygiene and hand-washing can help prevent the spread of conjunctivitis. If your child is infected, make sure they wash their hands often, avoid touching their eyes and don’t reuse towels. Pillowcases should also be changed frequently. Viral conjunctivitis can last one to two weeks before disappearing on its own. For bacterial conjunctivitis, an eye care physician typically prescribes antibiotic eye drops to treat the infection.
Our Miramar office now has a brief test done in-office to determine whether or not your child may have contracted pink eye (known medically as adenoviral conjunctivitis). If caught within the first couple of days, the chance of eliminating the infection is significantly increased with proper treatment.
If you feel that your child may have contracted pink eye, contact Dr. Michael Chesen at 954-437-9733 so he can properly evaluate their ocular health status and to determine the correct course of action.

flat feet in adultsBy roBert h. sheinBerg, D.P.m., D.A.B.P.s., f.A.C.f.A.s.
The arch of a Person’s foot is the Main suP-porting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are
strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops.
CAUSES:Loose or weak ligaments of the arch are the most common reason.Bone abnormalities that may be hereditary or acquired from injury (tarsal
coalitions or fractures).Trauma to tendons and ligaments on the inside of the arch and ankle
may cause the arch to slowly or acutely drop (posterior tibial tendon dysfunction).
SYMPTOMS:Pain in the arch, feet, ankles and legs aggravated by standing, walking and
running.Leg cramps and pain at times during the night.Premature fatigue during activity or simple walking.Weakness in the legs during running.Stiffness and pain in the lower back, especially in the morning.Lack of interest in participating in sports or activities that require running.Poor cardiovascular fitness.
SIGNS:Flat arch when standing is most common. The arch may look normal off
weightbearing. Many arches appear normal when standing but the front part of the foot
points out compared to the rearfoot. This is a foot that functions like a flat foot and may be a problem.
When looking at the feet from behind the heel bone appears to turn out.Knock-knees.Feet and ankles look abnormal. Bulging of the bone on the inside of the
ankle and foot.Abnormal gait with the feet excessively turned out.Abnormal shoe wear.People usually are overweight due to lack of exercise.
RELATED PROBLEMS:Development of bunions, hammertoes, heel spurs, neuromas and sagging
joints.Knee and leg problems.Severe collapse of the foot necessitating reconstructive bone surgery.Limited activity causing weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness.Muscular tightness in the foot, legs and back.Osteoarthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back.Back pain, especially in men over 30.
TREATMENT:History and physical examination to identify areas of pain and underlying
causes.Proper shoe gear to support the foot.Orthotics (insoles) custom molded to the foot to support the foot and entire
extremity.Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and stretch tight muscles.Short period of cast immobilization to stretch excessively tight muscles that
may be aggravating the condition.Surgery if all efforts at conservative care have failed to alleviate a person’s
problem. Failure to consider a surgical alternative may condemn an adult with severe deformity to continued pain, suffering and poor health.

supporting our Veterans
Dear MiraMar residents:Of all the occupations that cross all racial, religious
and gender is that of the military veteran. They are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, best friends and neighbors. In fact, I seriously doubt that any one person cannot say that their lives aren’t touched by someone in the military, whether active duty or retired. Everyone can point to someone in their past and in their pres-ent life who was or is in the military. In fact as the school year
ends and high school graduation approaches for thousands of young men and women, many of them are contemplating on serving their country by joining the military. And as honorable as serving one’s country, there is the stark reality that many will become wounded or will have lost their lives for their country. While we will always honor those who have given their lives through military service, we must also honor and, most generously, help those who come home wounded. It is incumbent upon us to ensure that these wounded veterans receive the care that they deserve and the services that can improve the quality of their lives. The unfortunate reality is that there are many wounded veterans who need our help.
About 2.5 million U.S. service members have served in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 according to the Department of Defense. Of those, more than 50,000 have been wounded in more than a decade of war. Of those 50,000 many call Florida, Broward County and Miramar their home.
It is for this reason that I am sponsoring a “Resource Fair for Veterans and Older Adults.” This exciting event will be held on Wednesday, April 30th, 2014 from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex, located at 6700 Miramar Parkway, Miramar, FL 33023. This year’s Fair is FREE for the veterans and seniors in our community and is sure to get them on the road to better health! I encourage you to come out and take advantage of information for veterans’ assistance, health screenings, educational displays, community resources, and demonstrations. For more information regarding the Resource Fair, please contact Stephanie McNeil at 954-889-2701 or via email at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>.
Know that we can all serve our country by providing care to those who have made great sacrifices in the service of their country. So if you have a military person in your life, please take them to the Resource Fair so that they can access services that will make their lives a little better.
Warmest regards,
Lori C. MoseleyMayor

S ince june 2013, when the florida legislature aPProved addi-tional funding to clear the huge backlog of residential foreclosures, major changes have occurred to the time in which foreclosure cases are brought
to trial. Previously it would take anywhere between 18 months to two years before a foreclosure case was completed. Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or final judgment within 6-8 months. The goal is to erase the statewide foreclo-sure backlog by 2016. Based on these state time limits, it may appear that judges in South Florida are more concerned with eliminating the backlog than with dispensing justice. If you are in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure, how can you combat against “light speed” foreclosures?
The most important tool you can use to defend against our courts’ quests to drain the dockets is to hire a qualified and experienced foreclo-sure defense attorney to guide you through the minefield of valid defenses to a foreclo-sure action. First, don’t settle for anything less than an initial face-to-face meeting with the attorney. Let’s face it, if they are too busy to meet with you person-ally to review your case, they will just be
“too busy” to actually help you with your case. Also, make sure that the attorney has plenty of litigation and trial experience
(at least 15 years), and that the attorney regularly practices in the county where your case is pending. Finally, make sure the attorney has a proven track record of outstanding results and satisfied clients. Ask the attorney to refer you to at least three satisfied clients. If they refuse to provide you this information, thank the attorney for her time, don’t waste another minute of your time, and leave the office.
Another critical tool to defend against “light speed” foreclosures is to ensure that the law firm you hire to defend your case has established loan modification and consumer bankruptcy departments. This will give you the very best oppor-tunity to save your home. If your legal defenses to the foreclosure case are not accepted by the court, you can process a loan modification, reinstatement, or short payoff of your loan. If all else fails, right before the foreclosure auction of your home takes place, you can file a consumer bankruptcy and attempt to com-plete the modification within the bankruptcy proceeding.
The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have more than 40 years combined litigation and trial experience, and we are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same office. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients, so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm.
Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team.
If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with an attorney (not a paralegal or assis-tant), or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.
