Graduate Audition Requirements Piano

SIGHTREADING:Wewillprovidepianomusictobereadatsight.Youwillbegiven1minutetolookatthemusicbeforeyouplay.Sightreadingisrequiredforallprospectivepianostudents.SCALESANDARPEGGIOS:Werecommendthatprospectivestudentsknowandthoughtfullypracticeallmajorandminorscalesandarpeggios.Wewillnot,however,asktoheartheseduringtheaudition.PREPAREDMUSIC*MMPianoPerformance:

• Aminimumofthreecontrastingworksfromdifferenthistoricalperiods.Mustincludeacompletesonataandavirtuosicwork,bothfromanyhistoricalperiod.Thecompletesonataisconsideredonework.Memorizationisrequired.

MMCollaborativePiano:

• Artsong:Threecontrastingsongsfromdifferenthistoricalperiods,representingtwoormorelanguages.

• Aria:Oneariafromanyhistoricalperiodrepresentinganylanguagenotincludedabove(orthesameasabove,ifthreelanguagesarepresented).

• Instrumentalmusic:Thefirstmovementofaninstrumentalsonataorothermajorworkfromanyhistoricalperiod.Lengthshouldbeapproximately5-10minutes

• Solo:Amajorsoloworkorfirstmovementofasonatafromanyhistoricalperiod.Memorizationisrequired.Lengthshouldbeapproximately5-10minutes

AUDITIONDATES:Graduateauditionsarearrangedonanindividualbasisanytimethroughouttheyear,includingtheofficialSchoolofMusicauditiondates.IfyouwishtobeconsideredforaGraduateAssistantship(seebelow),youmustcompleteyourauditionandhaveallapplicationmaterialsinbythefinalauditionday(typicallytheendofFebruary).RECORDEDAUDITIONS:Ifastudentisnotabletoauditioninperson,arecordedauditionmaybesubmitted,withfacultypermission.Itishighlyrecommendedthatallstudentsauditioninpersonwheneverpossibleforthebestchanceofbeingadmittedandtoreceiveascholarship.InternationalStudents:ItisunderstoodthattraveltoMTSUforaliveauditionmaynotbepossible.Therefore,recordedauditionsforinternationalstudentsareacceptedandhighlyencouraged.Allrecordingsshouldadheretothefollowingguidelines/formats:
