That’swhy the Volvo FE is equipped with an entirely new high-torque,common-rail 7.2-litre engine producing 280 and 320 hp.It responds instantly to the throttle, so you quickly reach cruising speed and can pull powerfully in high gears even on steep inclines. There’s also high torque from low revs, delivering as much as 1200 Nm across a wide rev range.

Entry to the Volvo FL and Volvo FE is effortless via two steps, which may be equipped with optional stairwell lighting. The steps have an anti-slip coating; the door opens wide and the entry grab-handles are positioned for maximum convenience.

A pneumatically adjusted steering wheel operates alongside all the controls you use most frequently. Gently curving around the driver, the instrument panel is accessible and clearly visible. The instrument panel features easily readable analogue gauges, and a digital display window that shows menus and automatically generated information readouts.

In safe handsWith a secure anti-theft system, your truck is in safe hands when parked, and when you spend the night on board. An alarm can be specifi ed either with or without a starter inhibitor and can be operated by remote control.

Safe visibility all roundFor extra visibility, a rear window can give a commanding view over the cargo platform (optional). All the windows are available with tinted, heat-refl ecting glass and both the rear-view mirrors and the windscreen are available with heating. Steering wheelA comfortable, grip-friendly steering wheel comes with integrated controls for functions such as the cruise control, retarder and navigation stalk for driver information. Pneumatically controlled steering wheel adjustment makes it easy to fi nd the perfect driving position.

ClimateA powerful climate unit with air conditioning keeps the temperature at the right level. It can be equipped with an extra cabin fi lter to enhance the driving conditions in demanding environments.

ManoeuvrabilityThe Volvo FL and Volvo FE are easy to manoeuvre even in congested spaces. Wheel defl ection of about 50 degrees gives the truck a small turning radius.

Four cabsThe Volvo FL and Volvo FE offer high-class comfort, with comfortable seats and plenty of interior space. Choose between four cabs depending on your transport assignments and needs. The Day cab (L1H1) is intended for short distances and offers maximum space for the load platform.

The Comfort cab (L2H1) is a comfortable alternative for somewhat longer transport operations. The Sleeper cab (L3H1) is only available with the Volvo FE and is the ideal choice if you want plenty of space on board and also require overnight accommodation in the truck. The Crew cab (L4H1C) is unique to the Volvo FL.

Crew CabVolvo’s Crew cab has been developed to cater for a work crew of up to seven people. The cab features arm rests for the passenger in the middle, a foldable table in the back seat, extra rear-view mirrors and an additional passenger seat. Two foot-steps and carefully positioned entry grab-handles makes it easy to get in and out of the cab.

The FL Crew cab has an injury-preventive design featuring energy-absorbing material that effectively shields the driver and passengers. The outer seats in the front and rear are equippedwith three-point seat belts and the central seats feature two-point seat belts. FUPS (Front Underrun Protection System) is fi tted as standard.

A 12V power socket is fi tted as standard. There is also theoption of a 24V socket on the passenger’s side. On all trucks,the interior trim is tough and dirt-resistant and the roof hatchlets in light and air.

2008 EMISSIONSAND ONWARDVolvo takes its environmental responsibility seriously.

Stringent emissions standards are achieved using Selective

Catalytic Reduction (SCR) which is environmentally sustainable

and provides customers with the best transport solution for

their needs.

SCR – High performance. Low fuel consumption.SCR technology is based on the after-treatment of exhaust gases.

The main components in Volvo’s SCR system are a tank and an

injection system for AdBlue, as well as a catalytic converter. It

is a robust system with few parts and high reliability. Once the

exhaust gases leave the engine, all that remains to be done is to

reduce the nitrogen oxides. This is done with the help of SCR, an

effective and thoroughly tested method of cleaning up exhaust

gases. The heat of the exhaust system transforms the urea into

ammonia, which reacts with the nitrogen oxides in a catalytic

converter, transforming them into harmless nitrogen gas and

steam - substances that occur naturally in the environment.

AdBlue – Safe and easily accessibleAdBlue is a stable, colourless, water-like fl uid. 32.5 percent of

its content is urea, the rest is deionised water. AdBlue is non-

toxic and is not classifi ed as hazardous to health, nor is the

fl uid fl ammable or explosive. It is not subjected to any special

restrictions for handling or transport.

AdBlue is quality-assured and must meet the recently announced

ISO 22241-1 standard. The amount of AdBlue required to meet

ADR 80/02 is around 3-4 percent in relation to the amount of

fuel used. The enhanced combustion effi ciency of the new SCR

equipped engine range helps improve fuel consumption by up to

2 percent over current Euro 3 Volvo engines. The onboard AdBlue

tank comes in two application specifi c sizes: 50 or 70 litres.

SCR technology is ready for ADR80/03 (Euro 5) regulations,

which come into affect in 2011.

Cleaner Exhaust GasesOver the past 10 years, exhaust

emissions from heavy trucks

have decreased considerably.

The step from Euro 3 to

Euro 4 means that emissions of

particulates and nitrogen oxides

will be cut by 80 percent and

30 percent respectively. With

Euro 5, emissions of nitrogen

oxides will drop even further.

HOW THE SCR SYSTEM WORKS1. The AdBlue tank is placed beside the

vehicle’s regular diesel fuel tank.

2. AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gases

in the form of fi nely atomised spray. Precise

metering ensures the optimum blend for

every application condition.

3. In the SCR catalytic converter, nitrogen

oxide is transformed into harmless nitrogen

gas and water. The catalytic converter is

completely integrated into the silencer.

On Board DiagnosticsA monitoring system (On Board Diagnostics) is also provided as part of the SCR package. It alerts the driver if the level of air pollutants in the exhaust gases is too high, and when it is time to refi ll the reservoir with AdBlue. In the event that the AdBlue tank runs dry or the AdBlue is not to the correct specifi cations,

the driver receives an initial warning that nitrous oxide emissions are at an abnormal level. If nitrous oxide levels further deteriorate, the available torque from the engine will reduce the next time the vehicle becomes stationary, unless the defi cit is corrected. If the truck runs out of AdBlue, the truck will not stop nor will any damage occur.
