PRESIDENTS REPORT The second half of our Rotary year started with a very interesting presentation by Captain Dick Lowry from the Fastad Group. Dick outlined via his personal experiences , how much the merchant navy has changed in the last 50 years, from the earlier post war cargo vessels to today’s modern high capacity container ships. Dick , having being raised in a family with a strong traditional merchant navy background, worked his way from a deckhand to Master Mariner. His story was fascinating in the way that it described how much

technology has changed and the consequent impact on all facets of sea freight. This week we celebrate Australia day with the traditional address, this year from Retired Brigadier Neale Bavington. Please RSVP to Keith this Monday as I am expecting a full house for this important dinner meeting. Remember, this month only, it is a 6:00PM for 6:30PM start . Remember dinner is now $22.00. Please help Keith by having the correct money. We are starting a busy six months. The Good Friday Golf day planning is underway, as is MUNA 2014. As I mentioned some months ago, PE Rhonda and I are keen to involve new members in these projects to understudy the members who have run these events for several years. Pete Rees will be involved in MUNA 2014 and also the Good Friday Golf day with Lou Paola. Romi Joher was quick to volunteer to help with the Golf, but unfortunately had to leave our Club, so we are looking for a replacement to assist under the handover guidance of Ron Thorpe and Don Guest. Please let me know OOB Wednesday. Please don’t forget that our District GSE organisers are looking for home hosting help. Please let me know if you can help or if you want to know more about it. I will see you on Wednesday. Terry ___________________________________________________________________________ Request from Monash Rotaract Club for assistance. Can you help please? “Hi Terry, I am the current chairperson for the Australian Rotaract Games committee. In a few weeks (Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th February) the Monash Rotaract club in conjunction with Diamond Valley Rotaract club is hosting the Australian Rotaract Games in Melbourne. This is a fantastic weekend for rotaractors from around the country to come together for some fun, networking and to raise some money for charity. I'm putting out an 11th hour call for help as some of our volunteers have become unavailable and due to lower than projected numbers our budget is looking quite tight. I have attached some information about the games and possible ways the Rotary Club of Mount Waverley could help us out. They include: - volunteers on Sunday 9th, 9am-11am for a BBQ - volunteers during the weekend - sponsoring of a food item for the BBQ (approx. $50-80) - contributing a small financial donation ($100-200) - loan us a BBQ for use I will be following up with a phone call some time tomorrow (Friday 24/1) but feel free to call me before then if you have any questions on 0408 882 080. MEMBERS ANNOUNCEMENTS I did a make-up at the Rotary Club of Boronia last week along with several other members of the Rotary Bike Ride team. The Guest Speaker was Jeremy Scott, a 32 year old New Zealander who has ridden his bike from London to Melbourne as part of a 50,000 km charity ride for the Heart Foundation. Jeremy was born with a hole in the heart and was a sickly child until he had a life changing heart transplant in New Zealand when he was 4 years old. He is now fulfilling his dream to raise $50,000 for the Heart Foundation. His presentation was most inspiring and photos of his journey were amazing. You can donate and also view his blog at www.quinsadventure.wordpress.com . Thanks Geoff Taylor - International Chair
