FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora koutou Last night we hosted a guest speaker from Attitude, who talked with parents and students about puberty, a topic which is particularly relevant and important for our emerging adolescents. We would be interested in any feedback from parents who attended the evening session. The students particularly enjoyed the school session, which was both entertaining and informative. Teachers will also continue discussions and lessons about the emotional, social and physical changes that do occur throughout this time, as part of their classroom programmes. Uniform We have given out a considerable amount of uniform this week. We are not sure whether students which are deliberately choosing to wear incorrect items or whether there is genuine hardship out there. We assume that it is a combination of both. To support our students and families we have leather shoes available in the office for $15.00 a pair. We also have a small stock of second hand items available for purchase or loan. There is a considerable amount of unnamed lost property in Room 8. In fact, there are about 30 fleeces that need to be worn! So, if you need one, come and get one! (picture of the lost property trolley below).

Congratulations to our Young Innovators Award Teams who took 1st place and 2nd place in this year’s competition, last night. Well done teams. This is an outstanding academic achievement. Also, to our Year 7A Netball team who won the WBOPPB Winter Tournament, last Friday. A big thank you to all of the students, staff, coaches and parents who supported our students competing in Football, Hockey, Netball and Rugby 7’s, last Friday. I was very proud to be out and about watching you all competing so well. Today, our students are competing in the WBOPPB Elite Cross Country and a number of our rugby boys are playing their club finals tomorrow. Good luck to you all. Have a wonderful weekend. Ma te wa Ms M/Whaea Lisa

SPORTS INFORMATION [email protected]

NETBALL MMI Year 7A Netball team won the BOP/PB tournament last Friday. In our pool games we played Te Puke and won 16 - 9, then Gisborne and won 18 – 8 and the last pool game was against Otumoetai and we won 21 -2. Semi-finals cross over was against Tauranga. At full time it was 9-9. In extra time, it was the first team to lead by 2 goals who would advance to the finals. With the whole team playing a defensive game, and winning a vital turnover, MMI scored the winning 2 goal lead, to move into the finals. Our finals was against Te Puke, where the MMI girls won 18 - 4 - Gold Medal winners.

HOCKEY 6 A SIDE TOURNAMENT Last Friday, we had 3 teams enter the 6 a side tournament, Mt Yellow, Mt Orange and Mt Black. Well done to the teams, who played really well, with MMI Black going all the way through to the finals (the quarter final was very exciting against Tauranga Intermediate – which we won, and finished 4th overall)! The Orange and Black teams both came together on the night and with no substitutes, played outstanding. Thanks to those supporters who stepped in and helped the teams on the night. Thanks to Cooper and Sam, who also stepped in to help with umpiring. They are a great bunch of kids and are a credit to themselves, their parents and the school.

!!URGENT!!

Please return any tracksuits or sports uniforms to school as soon as possible. These need to

be re-issued to new players.

Many thanks!

ELITE GIRLS BASKETBALL COMPETITION

On the first Friday of this term (28th July), the MMI Girls A Basketball Team competed the Intermediate Elite Basketball competition. The team had an early 7am start, travelling down in the school van, to the Rotorua Event Centre. They had a great start to the day, winning the first 2 of their pool games and narrowly losing the 3rd game by 1 basket This meant they played off for 3rd and 4th, where they lost to Tauranga Intermediate, but again, only by a small margin of 2 baskets. The girls teamwork and defence were the strong points of their game and they were really proud of their day.

BOYS FOOTBALL Last Friday, the MMIS Boys’ Football Team went to Gordon Spratt Reserve, to take part in the Winter Tournament, with 9 other intermediate schools, from the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay regions. After warming up, we went into our first group game against Whakatane. Initially, we struggled with their physicality, but by moving the ball quicker, we dominated later on without scoring. It ended in a frustrating 0-0 draw. Next were Tauranga, one of the favourites (and the eventual winner). We worked hard and were reasonably well organised, but conceded 2 goals in the first half. We improved as the match went on and created a couple of good chances later in the game. Again we didn’t convert, so lost this one 0-2. Everything came together in the next game though, as we scored, freely and frequently, to beat a weak Kaitao side 11-0. The impressive goal haul came in handy later in the day. We played well again against Taupo in our final group match, dominating and scoring 2 goals in each half to end as 4-1 winners. We finished second in our group to Tauranga and progressed to a semi-final. We faced a strong Otumoetai team, that had won their group. Although we started well, we conceded a goal against the run of play early on. Again we faced physical opponents and although we acquitted ourself well, this time they scored another in the second half and we bowed out 0-2. Otumoetai went on to lose the final to Tauranga and with no 3rd/4th playoff, we were awarded 3rd place, due to our superior goal difference. It was a solid start for us, as a relatively young team. We’ll be training hard over the coming weeks, as we look forward to doing our best for MMIS when the AIMS tournament starts, later this term.
