MONTANAMontana Wilderness – Service Trip with the Bob

July

Area Description: Considered by many to be the “crown jewel” of the wilderness preservation system, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is comprised of over 1.5 million acres of untrammeled, wild vastness that stretches from Glacier National Park in the north, to Rogers Pass to the south in the northern Rockies of Montana. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is named after the early day forester and conservationist who started his career for the forest service in Montana and is credited with single-handedly adding 5.4 million acres to the nation’s wilderness system. In 1941, after Bob Marshall’s death this primitive area was commemorated with his name and later additions of the Great Bear and Scapegoat Wildernesses in the 1970’s preserved this continuous tract of primeval land.

Straddling the continental divide, the “Bob” as it’s known locally, is comprised of towering limestone reefs (including the famous Chinese Wall), range after range of majestic mountains, lush forests, broad basins and valleys, and two “wild and scenic” designated rivers. It also contains some of the best wildlife habitat in the lower 48 for elk, deer, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, black bear, and the “threatened” grizzly bear.

Page 8: MT. HOOD Dobbins/Outdoor Adventur… · These programs would offer basic fundamentals of outdoor trip preparation, awareness, planning, leave-no-trace principles, respect for nature

Project: Since you are a Forest Service volunteer, expect to put in an 5 hour workday, and 40 hours per week on the longer trips. Trail maintenance projects involve use of primitive tools such as cross-cut saws, axes, pulaskis, hand saws, shovels and loppers, which you will be trained for and supervised by a BMWF project crew-leader. Trail work can involve strenuous lifting, bending, and hiking to and from work site each day. There are a variety of tasks on each trip and we encourage volunteers to take turns and try all of them. The BMWF crew-leader will assign appropriate tasks to fit your comfort and skill level as well (i.e.- you won't be expected to saw tree's out of the trail all day if you would rather cut brush with loppers instead). On the longer trips, you will also be expected to help out with camp chores such as cooking, cleaning, and general camp duties.

Pack Support: We will arrange to have a volunteer packer to haul tools, food and some personal gear. The first priorities for packing are crew food and tools. If there is space, larger items such sleeping bags and tents may also be packed. Please be prepared to carry in ALL of your personal backpacking gear. We do our best to arrange for pack support but volunteer packers are not always available.

Food: Food and menu planning are provided by our crew leader. Please limit personal snacks to avoid over packing food. Please alert us to any food allergies or preferences. BMWF also provides bear hang supplies as the crew will be practicing proper backcountry food storage. You will be expected to pitch in and help prepare meals, and other campsite chores during the project.

Gear: BMWF will bring group gear such as cooking stove, pots & pans, water filter, etc. However, each volunteer should bring a personal kitchen kit (with plate/bowl, spoon/fork, hot mug, water bottle, etc). Please see the attached list for other personal gear needs. Note: participants will need to bring long pants (no shorts for trail work), long sleeved shirt (when sawing), work gloves and sturdy pair of hiking boots (tennis shoes ARE NOT recommended) to work in. Please wear hiking boots with ankle support. Volunteers are also responsible for bringing their own personal camping gear including a sleeping bag, tent, and backpack. Dressing in layers is the best approach. One work “outfit” will be sufficient; everyone will stink as much as you do (unless they are not working very hard).

Leave No Trace: We will be practicing Leave No Trace camping principles in the backcountry, some projects will be near a Forest Service cabin, there is a primitive outhouse at the Forest Service Cabin. The BMWF crew-leader will be training you in these principles and what needs to be followed during the week. We will try and leave as little an impact as we can to keep the campsite and this area beautiful.

June, July, August

Rising high above the magnificent canyons carved by the Colorado River, the Kaibab Plateau offers outstanding mountain biking combined with spectacular scenery. Pedal through Ponderosa Pine and Aspen forests, with rolling terrain between 8,000 and 9,000 feet, and ride on flowing singletrack and untraveled forest roads. Enjoy views of magnificent canyons carved by the Colorado River.

Dine on healthy, fresh, delicious meals, kick back around the campfire in good company, and camp under the stars on this unforgettable adventure.

Grand Canyon – Mountain Biking

Day 1: Arizona Rim Trail- 14 miles. Meet your guides at 8 a.m. on the morning of your departure at the Lexington Inn in St. George, Utah. Your guides will take care of any last minute logistics and load the support vehicle, before you make the three-hour drive to the trailhead. Unload your bike and gear and ride a section of the Arizona Trail, which eventually runs north to south across the entire state of Arizona. The trail consists of mostly smooth, rolling singletrack with several steep climbs and descents. Meet up with the truck mid-day for a tasty buffet lunch before heading towards the East Rim Overlook, with your first views of the magnificent canyons below. Help set up camp while your guides prepare meals, head out for a hike, or lounge around the forested campsite with a book.

Day 2: Upper Tater Canyon to North Rim - 30 miles. Begin the day with three miles of rolling singletrack, and then alternate to forest service roads. The terrain is moderate, with a good amount of downhill in addition to several climbs you must conquer before reaching camp at Locust Point. Here, you’ll camp for two nights right on the magnificent North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The views are amazing, and the sunrises, sunsets, and stars are sublime.

Day 3: Rainbow Rim Trail - 18 miles. Explore Rainbow Rim trail, an incredibly scenic trail designed by the Kaibab Ranger District with mountain bikers in mind. The fast carving singletrack winds right along the rim of the Kaibab Plateau with outstanding views into the Grand Canyon. Carry lunch on the out and back ride to Timp Point, or make it a loop by adding 10 miles of jeep roads.

Day 4 Rainbow Rim Trail - 9 – 18 miles. Continue riding the rest of the Rainbow Rim trail, nine miles to its end at Parissawampitts Point. Finish riding by noon, enjoy a delicious lunch, and shuttle back to St. George. You’ll arrive between 5 and 6 p.m., so its best to make lodging arrangements in advance.

SAN JUAN ISLANDSKayak in search of Orca whales. (Washington)

Summer Months

During this 4 day trip, you’ll have opportunities to search for Orca whales and other large marine mammals as you paddle among numerous small, uninhabited islands.

This four-day San Juan Islands kayak tour will give you a chance to camp and kayak amongst the many islands that encircle San Juan Island. Featuring incredible views and great wildlife, this trip is a Northwest classic. To top off the great kayaking and wildlife viewing, you'll enjoy an all-inclusive camping experience featuring delicious camp cuisine and bottled wines.

Paddle your kayak through the favored habitat of the Southern Resident Orca Whales, currently protected under the Endangered Species Act. There are currently 80 known resident whales in this area. Orcas are also known as "killer whales," but don't let that frighten you. Orcas are actually oceanic dolphins, and the beautiful and intelligent creatures you may encounter on this trip feed exclusively on salmon.

Intensity: This trip is moderate to strenuous

San Juan Islands – Kayaking for Orcas

$700 per person

Price Includes:• Accommodations (camping)• All meals• Kayaking equipment• Camping tent• Ground transportation to launch point• equipment and safety talks.

Price Does Not Include:• Travel to and from Friday Harbor, Washington• Sleeping bag and pad (available for rent)• Gratuities

Common Questions:1. How do I get to Friday Harbor from Seattle? You have a number of different travel options. Most people take a shuttle van that leaves right from Sea Tac

airport 8-9 times a day and transports you to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, which is about a two and a half hour drive. At the terminal, purchase a round trip walk-on ticket to Friday Harbor, which will cost around $12 per person. When you sign up for the trip, we will e-mail you all the travel details you’ll need to arrange your transportation.

2. I've never kayaked before, is that going to be a problem? No experience is necessary! Your safety is their number one priority, so Outdoor Odysseys uses very stable double kayaks that tend to be wider and much more stable than single kayaks. They employ mature, seasoned guides who will give you a very thorough on-land orientation before you start your trip. You'll learn the basics of kayak paddling, including how to steer and fit the boat. Throughout your kayak trip, your guide will be there to give you pointers and assist you with your paddling skills.

3. How far do we kayak each day? It varies, but the average ranges from 7–10 miles a day, with 12 miles maximum. The tours are geared towards novice and intermediate paddlers, and there's a lot of flexibility built in to give participants the option of going for a hike, an evening paddle, or simply lounging around in camp.

Page 18: MT. HOOD Dobbins/Outdoor Adventur… · These programs would offer basic fundamentals of outdoor trip preparation, awareness, planning, leave-no-trace principles, respect for nature

San Juan Islands – Kayaking for Orcas

Day 1: Arrival. On day one you'll meet your guides at 8:30 am in downtown Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. Your guides will walk you through a thorough on-land orientation and paddle talk. Once you feel completely comfortable in the kayak, you'll depart from San Juan County Park. Paddle through prime orca whale habitat as you head north towards the campsite on Stuart Island. After setting up your tent at the waters’ edge, take a break while your guides prepare delicious cuisine.

Day 2: Circumnavigate Stuart Island. Enjoy waking up to the smell of freshly brewed gourmet coffee, teas, and famous cinnamon swirl French toast. After you've filled up with delicious breakfast, circumnavigate Stuart Island keeping a sharp eye peeled for orca whales, bald eagles, and osprey.

Day 3: Speiden and Sentinel Islands. Break camp and point the nose of your kayak towards Jones Island, one of the jewels of the San Juan Islands. Paddle along Spieden and Sentinel Islands and stop for lunch at a beautiful little cove on the east side of San Juan Island. Set up camp at one of the numerous delightful waterfront sites that ring the island. While the guides prepare your last night’s dinner, you'll have the opportunity to explore the island.

Day 4: Paddle the San Juan Channel. Depart from Jones Island and kayak past picturesque Yellow Island, which is owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy. Work your way down San Juan Channel, taking a break at Turn Island for lunch and take out. Arrive back into Friday Harbor between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.

*Trip includes Starport team building activities (pre-trip) such as trip planning, equipment and safety talks.
