Recordings 2013
The Faculty Book Collection was established by the MSU Libraries in 1998 to recognize and honor the scholarly work of MSU faculty members who have written, edited, or translated a book or musical score; contributed to a multimedia work; or participated in a professionally recorded musical performance.
Wherever possible, the library acquires two copies of each work: one for the Main Library or appropriate branch library, and the other for the MSU Faculty Book Collection, located on the fi rst fl oor of the Main Library near the Director’s Offi ce.
Titles for the collection are identifi ed by the subject librarians who serve as liaisons to MSU colleges and departments, and through extensive database searches using current lists of MSU faculty provided by the Provost’s offi ce. Works by retired faculty and by academic staff are included whenever they are identifi ed.
Authors with new works published in 2013 are listed in this program, and are our honored guests at the MSU Faculty Authors Reception for 2014.

Digital humanities
fl owering@ MSU
The digital humanities are gaining momentum at MSU—among researchers, and in the library.
The fi eld has long been represented here by MATRIX: The Center for Digital Humanities and Social Sciences, and a well-established undergraduate specialization in the College of Arts and Letters.
Since January 2013, these have been joined by CAL’s Digital Humanities and Literary Cognition Lab, CAL’s new graduate certifi cate in Digital Humanities, and the Libraries’ new Digital Text Services team.
Led by Dr. Michael Rodriguez, collection coordinator for the humanities, the team includes Devin Higgins, digital library programmer; Thomas Padilla, digital humanities librarian; and Bobby Smiley, digital humanities and American history librarian.
A representative project of Devin’s is the development of a Google Dataset Subset Generator. It allows users to select among 2.8 million scanned volumes, identifying titles by language, publication date, literary form, and other characteristics, to build a dataset for text analysis.
The recent addition of Thomas and Bobby allows the library to expand its range of activities in support of digital humanities research. Within the fi rst few months of their arrival, the team has partnered with faculty on a grant proposal to the HathiTrust Research Center; worked with researchers on text mining projects; and given guest lectures
on topics as diverse as digital publishing, information visualization, network analysis, and moving image analysis.
In addition to instruction, consultation, and collaboration, the Digital Text Services team is investigating the research potential for digital collections created at MSU, such as the holdings of the Vincent Voice Library and the historic cookbooks in the Feeding America project.
“We anticipate a greater embrace of digital humanities scholarship at MSU in the next few years, and more vibrant and disciplinarily-diverse conversation about DH,” says Rodriguez. “We hope to

Digital Text Services partners with the library’s Research Data Management Group to form the Digital Scholarship Collaborative (DSC) —a team of librarians ready to work with researchers across all the disciplines on the creation, curation, and navigation of data and digital text.
