Standard contact diametersare 0.020" (0.508 mm) and 0.040" (1.016 mm).The basic CIN::APSE contact configurationconsists of a contact installed into acustomized plastic insulator with thepatented Cinch hourglass hole design. Oncein place, the contact extends on both sidesof the insulator.
Quick, SolderlessInstallation
CIN::APSE is easily installed in two basicsteps, without soldering. First, usingalignment features, the CIN::APSEinterconnect is positioned between twocomponents with matching connectionfootprints. Next, the two components arecompressed and fastened together. It's assimple as that.
Low CompressionForce, Low Contact
ResistanceThe CIN::APSE contact offers one of the bestforce/deflection ratios in the industry. Anaverage compression force of only 2.5ounces will yield a typical contact resistanceof less than 20 mOhms. This means high I/Ocount applications can achieve excellentelectrical performance with only minimalcompression force.

Microminiature-DConnectors: Dura-
ConThe Cinch Microminiature Dura-Con line ofconnectors qualified (QPL) to MIL-DTL-83513is one of the most widely used .050 inch(1.27mm) pitch connectors for military andhigh-end commercial applications. Dura-Conis ideal where packaging requires a small sizeand low weight, as well as a highly reliableand rugged connector that has electrical andmechanical integrity under extreme vibrationand shock conditions. The heart of the Dura-Con System is the unique wire form pin thatprovides seven points of contact whenmated to the socket. Applications includeelectronics in missiles, aircraft, launchvehicles, satellites and computers.
Dura-Con connectors are available as allplastic in 9, 15, 21, 25, 31, 37 and 51 positionsand metal shell versions in 9, 15, 21, 25, 31, 37,51 and 100 positions. In addition, Cinch alsooffers Metal Shell Micro Edge Dura-ConConnectors in 128 and 184 positions, stripconnectors up to 60 positions andconnector savers. Termination can be soldercup, wired leads or PC mount.

Mobility System(MGMS)
FAUN produces two complete portableroadways solutions: Heavy GroundMobility System (HGMS) and MediumGround Mobility System (MGMS)
HGMS can withstand repeated vehicleloads of up to 70 tonnes and 50m can bedeployed in under 10 minutes.
HGMS allows vehicles to move with easeover difficult terrain conditions such assand, snow, mud, swamp and ice helping tospeed mobility and protect assets.
HGMS can also carry an additional 50mTRACKWAY, towed behind the chassis ona trailer. This enables longer roadways tobe laid quickly and connected easily.
FAUN’s Medium Ground Mobility System(MGMS) consists of the same key elementsas HGMS. MGMS comprises 32-metrelengths and can be deployed in under 6minutes by two people.
Like all FAUN products, MGMS is unbeatenin all trials and can withstand repeated

loads of up to 30 tonnes. It is mostappropriate for vehicles with pneumatictyres and can also be used with JCB andspecialist dispenser for beach landings.
Temporary Runwaysand Helipads
FAUN has three aluminium panellingdesigns suitable to create ForwardOperating Pads for Vertical Take Off andLanding (VTOL) aircraft – the HelicopterLanding Mat.
They are designed to alleviate brown outwhile marking out a clear landing area.
Aircraft Landing Mat(ALM)
FAUN’s Aircraft Landing Mat (ALM) is arapidly deployable expedient runway forlonger term temporary installations.
Rapid Runway Repair(RRR)
FAUN’s Rapid Runway Repair (RRR) matsenable critical sections of an airfield to berepaired in order for flying operations tobe resumed following an enemy attack.

Our LSI 155 insulation and sheathingmaterial has been fully tested to thedemands of airframe use and can be foundon a wide range of helicopters as well asother aircraft. Rated for applications up to+150oC it has also been tested for use inconditions as high as +200o C (commonlyrequired by customers in the USA).

EMCWe are able to offer a number of differentscreen options on all cables to meet theEMC requirements of the system. Indesigning the screen type, otherrequirements will be taken intoconsideration such as cable size, weight,flexibility and the screen terminationmethod. Cost may also be a factor that

Harnesses are designed to berepaired in the field or easily replaceable.Maintainability will therefore determinehow the harness is manufactured and whatcomponents are used, eg over-moulding orheatshrink boots.

Target (MRST)The low cost Sprite system has beendesigned to provide the worlds Navalforces with a simple system that may bedeployed from ships on deployment toprovide them with a realistic live firetraining system. The fully inflatable hullsallow the vessel to be packed away into asmall volume of approximately 2m x 1m x1m. To improve survivability the hulls may
be (optionally) foam filled and ballisticprotection may be installed to reduce therisk of premature damage to the engine orvessels command and control system.

In recent years, forwell understoodreasons, armouredand protected vehicledesign has focusedheavily on defeatingthe threat posed byIEDs and the othermethods of attackwhich tend tocharacteriseasymmetric warfare.
This design path has reached its apotheosis insuch vehicles as Mastiff, MATV and Foxhound,all of which are driven by the need to counterthe most prevalent operational threat.
As the focus moves away from counter-insurgency to contingency operations with theimpending withdrawal of forces fromAfghanistan, vehicle designers face a newchallenge: how can they best design a vehiclewhich incorporates the lessons learnt soexpensively in Iraq and Afghanistan, but whichcan still meet the demands of conventionaloperations. Furthermore, how can they achievethis against a background of ever shrinkingdefence budgets?
One way in which a vehicle manufacturer cansignificantly reduce the up-front costsassociated with vehicle development is tomaximise the use of existing assemblies whendesigning a vehicle and, indeed, in many casesparticular major assemblies are mandated eitherby the customer (for reasons of commonality)or by the manufacturer (to reduce developmentcosts and speed the process). Although there is
no doubt that this reuse of assemblies can bebeneficial, it can also constrain designers suchthat they have to compromise their assigneddesign objectives in order to accommodate theuse of the assemblies in question. In order toovercome any such issues, the most beneficialapproach is for the development team toembrace the features of the mandatedassemblies and, through innovative designs,incorporate these into the prototype.
The design of the SUPERAV, Iveco’s class leadingamphibious 8 x 8 demonstrates this approachin practice. In this case, the design team waspresented with a series of design goals which
had been driven by a comprehensiverequirements capture process, identifying boththe best performance of comparable vehicles,which were to be matched or exceeded, andthe performance requirements sought by theuser. In programme terms, one of the keyrequirements was a short and cost effectivedevelopment programme in order to matchanticipated customer timescales. In order toachieve this, the design team was mandated touse the chassis, transmission and running gearof Iveco’s highly successful 8 x 8 Centaurofamily, and the Cursor 13, a COTS Iveco enginedrawn from range of commercial heavy truckengines. One of the great benefits of each of

these assemblies was the fact that the reliabilityof each element had been proven over millionsof kilometres of running.
Use of the Centauro chassis had, at first sight,both advantages and disadvantages. On the plusside, the H transmission configuration allowedany resultant vehicle a lower centre of gravitythan other 8 x 8s which used a single centraldrive shaft. Similarly, the H transmission allowsa degree of redundancy if wheel stations on the3rd and 4th positions on either side are put outof action. On the negative side, the verycharacteristics which made the H configurationsuch an effective choice for an 8 x 8 mountinga full pressure tank main armament – Centaurois the only 8 x 8 capable of firing both a 105 mmand 120mm through a 360 degree arc – militatedagainst its ability to counter under vehicle blast.This was because, whilst the original designaimed at maintaining a low silhouette by placingthe drive shafts outside the crew compartmentrather than, as with more conventional designs,underneath it, countering the effects of blast isbest achieved by increasing the distance fromthe centre of the blast: the effect of blast isreduced by the cube of the distance from theexplosion.
Rather than seeing this as a hindrance, Iveco’sengineers worked to make a virtue of necessity.
As a first principle, they focused their designwork on the crew, as their position in the vehiclewas key to the survivability which the vehiclecould afford them. Accordingly, each crewposition was equipped with a seat mountedfrom the roof of the vehicle. This contrast withthe more common practice which is to mountmine blast seats from the hull sidewall, which,whilst easier technically, provides significantlyless blast attenuation.
The next step was to configure the hull tomitigate the effects of blast. Standard practiseto achieve this is to construct a V shape hull,something which, at first sight, appears easier todo with a standard drive train than the Htransmission. In fact, with intelligent designwork, this proved not to be the case. By raisingthe hull slightly using a sub-frame,
and by providing clear blast escape channels tothe side of the vehicle, blast effects aremitigated dramatically.
The crew also benefits from the absence of anytransmission components under the centrelineof the vehicle which can, in the event of a mineattack, act as secondary projectiles.
Having vented as much blast as possible to theside of the vehicle, the next step was to manage
the remaining blast. This is achieved by the
installation of blast absorbing materials
between the outer and inner floors, presenting
blast from being transmitted through the floor.
This approach to countering the effects of blast
accorded particularly well with the need to
provide levels of amphibiosity sufficient to
allow the vehicle to swim fully protected and
with a full crew and necessary mission
equipment. Where a traditional amphibious
design will tend to be quite large, to ensure it
has adequate volume to float, and relatively
lightly protected, to reduce weight, the
SUPERAV design focuses protection only on the
areas around the crew, with flotation being
provided by the fitting of very lightly protected
compartments around this protected citadel.
These also enable the carriage of mission
equipment, with personal kit being carried
inside the vehicle. Careful configuration of the
flotation tanks ensures that these fit within the
same envelope as comparable vehicles but,
because the protection is focused on the areas
which matter, class leading protection can
provided but with a 20% weight saving. In
consequence, SUPERAV can deploy on
amphibious operations fully protected and
crewed and fitted with a remote weapon
station, swimming in conditions up to Sea
State 3.
The achievement of Iveco’s engineers has
therefore been to avoid many of the critical
compromises inherent in developing a well
protected amphibious vehicle. The end product
is a vehicle whose protection matches or
exceeds even non-amphibious 8 x 8s, a result
which owes everything to a well managed,
closely focused and highly innovative
engineering approach.

The ship’s crew detected leakinghydrogen from the container and removedit from the ship. Fire fighters decided toattempt to move the contents and spreadthem among three separate containers.While performing this operation, thecontents burst into flames.

Flameless ration heaters [FRH] are devicesused for the heating of Meals, Ready-to-Eat [MRE], which are used extensively inthe military as a method of providingmeals to soldiers while in the field. MREswith FRH are well known to pose certainfire, explosion, and health-related safetyissues while in shipment, where typicallyhundreds of these meals are packagedtogether in a single shipping container.They are considered to be a hazardousmaterial under the United Nationspublication Recommendations on theTransport of Dangerous Goods and in thatpublication are listed as “dangerous whenwet.”

L-3 WESCAM announced today thesuccessful in-service demonstrations of itsMX™-Series of designator systems at the U.S.Army’s Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona.Demonstrations of the MX-10D, MX-15D, MX-25D and MX-RSTA systems were conductedover a 30-day period on over four differentaircraft and one ground vehicle. Operationalhours spent on the trials totalled 100.

DeployableCT ScannersThe Innovation Award also includes theCompany’s pioneering work designing adeployable forensic laboratory fitted into oneshelter to conduct DNA and clean roomforensic analysis. The facility and process startedlife housed in a permanent building, LandSystems then developed a three shelter systemwhich then led to the development of thesingle shelter capability.

The deployable forensic laboratory, which canbe up and running within minutes of arrival, hastaken all the critical elements to enable forensicagencies to rapidly carryout DNA investigationof buccal swab, blood, hair, tissue and contacttrace material to provide investigating officersand intelligence services with information tocarry out their roles more quickly and whilst thescene is still “live”. Integral to the design of theunit is maintaining the internal environment toensure that none of the collected evidence iscontaminated.
