TITLE: Eleanor Worley Collection

INCLUSIVE DATES: 1860s - 1994

BULK DATES: July 1980 – September 1994

DESCRIPTION: This collection includes 15.8 feet of files. There are thirty seven (37) boxes with 644 files

of genealogical information and 57 sleeves of photographs and two unsleeved photographs related to

families of Eleanor Russell McCauley Worley and her husband David P. Worley but there are also files on

collateral lines to these families. In addition to the above listed files, there is also 4.33 feet of index

cards that are stored at a separate location (currently in Crawford Room at OGS).

This collection was extremely well organized by Mrs. Worley. She obviously had a respect for detail.

Sources of materials are listed on the copies that are included in the collection. Most historical

photographs include detailed information indicating those in the photo. Mrs. Worley was very thorough

and the collection is a testament to many years of work by her.

Eleanor Russell McCauley was born in Greensboro North Carolina on 10 April 1921. She married David

Perry Worley (b. 8 August 1921, East Aurora, New York) on 6 February 1922. She lived in many locations

around the United States. They adopted a son David William Worley and a daughter Catherine Ann

Worley. In later years (stated to be prior to 1982), they settled near Sunbury, Delaware County, Ohio.

While living in Sunbury, Mrs. Worley became active with the Delaware County Chapter of the Ohio

Genealogical Society and was one of the founding members. She served in many capacities in the

organization.

Several members of the Delaware Chapter shared these recollections with the processor of this

collection:

• Eleanor was one of the first officers of Delaware Chapter.1

• Eleanor was kind of a shy lady.3

• She was terribly dedicated to her research. 3

• When she filled out charts, she made sure that all information was added. 3

• She was a very nice lady; very personable. 3

• She was a mainstay in our organization. 3

• I traveled with her for research and conferences several times.2

• She did not talk much about herself. 1

• She was very faithful and loyal; always was working at the library. 1

• She was raised in North Carolina so much of her research is from that area. 2

• Eleanor was really into genealogical research. 2

• She helped many members of the chapter do research because she did not have much local

research that she could do. 1

ORGANIZATION:

Notes: Mrs. Worley cataloged her collection so well that the processor decided to use her organization

and maintain her organizational structure. For each surname that she researched, she developed a

Calendar of Research detailing the location of information, date, what she located, and a code for the

surname (see list in FILE 9). This calendar was maintained for each surname and a master Calendar of

Research includes all surnames (see FILES 3-5) chronologically. For each surname, she gathered

information and filed it under the surname. She referred to this information as “manuscripts”. The

processor continued to use this term to classify the collections of family surname information. The

pertinent Calendar of Research will be found at the front of the folder for the manuscripts or in a

separate folder (if this is the case, a notation is included in the finding aid below). Manuscripts are

numbered with the family code and then numerically. Pages are also numbered within the system. This

was maintained.

The collection includes general information first, then family research, collaterals and family group

sheets.

Please note that if searching this finding aid electronically, names should be searched surname first

(example Doe, John) and also surname last (John Doe).

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Eleanor Worley Collection at the Ohio Genealogical Society includes many letters related to family

research as well as supporting documentation including ancestor charts, newspaper clippings,

photographs, deeds, census records, war records and wills. It is not clear when Mrs. Worley began

doing research, but it appears that most of her work was completed in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. She

researched her lines as well as those of her husband. The families lived in the Greensboro, North

Carolina area; Orange Co., North Carolina; Alleghany Co., Pennsylvania; Scioto County, Ohio; Fairfax,

Stafford, Nanseomond and Loudoun Co., Virginia; and Bullitt and Bracken Co., Kentucky. The collection

also includes many collateral charts.

ACCESS – No restrictions. However, some pieces of the collection should be handled with extreme care

due to their fragile nature.

PROVENANCE- This collection was donated by the Delaware County, Ohio Genealogical Society. Mrs.

Worley was a member and her husband donated her records to the chapter after her death in 1998 (22

October). But the chapter felt that since most of the records were not local Delaware County, Ohio

MSS 310 Page 26

records, the collection would be better housed at the Ohio Genealogical Society. The collection was

assembled by Eleanor Russell McCauley Worley.
