Ms. Ware- Earth Science-

• ? L.T.: I can explain the phases of the moon

• W.O.T.D.: Waning: less of the moons surface can be seen.

• Waxing: More of the moons surface can be seen

• DO NOW: Why do you think we have phases of the moon

Ms. Ware- Earth Science- L.T.: I can explain the phases of the moon.

I can name various moon phases.

W.O.T.D.: Cyclic events: a repetition of events, events that occur in a cycle.

DO NOW:

1.) Why do we have phases of the moon?

2.) What are the phases of the moon?

*REMINDER: ALL HW DUE TOMORROW

ESRTs p15

because as the Earthrotates, the moon

revolves

How many hours is the moon visible each day?

Approximate Times of Moonrise and Moonset

Ms. Ware- 10/27/09- Earth ScienceWOTD: Geo-centric: Earth centered

Helio-centric: Sun centered

L.T. I can tell the difference between heliocentric and geocentric solar systems

Do Now: Draw or write about the life cycle of a star (use terms such as

nebula, protostar, main sequence, red giant, super nova, or white dwarf)

http://aspire.cosmic-ray.org/labs/star_life/hr_interactive.htmlH.R. interact diagram!!!

The Geocentric Theory

• The earth is located at the center of the universe and all the planets revolve around the earth.

Geocentric Cont (Aristotle (384-322 B.C.))…..

• The Geocentric theory was believed by the Catholic church especially because the church taught that God put earth as the center of the universe which made earth special and powerful.

• The idea of the Earth actually moving was widely felt as a foolish suggestion because, as they saw it, if the Earth was moving they would be able to feel it.

The Heliocentric Theory

• The Sun is the center of our solar system

Group Work: Work on the worksheet answer questions about the H.R. Diagram and

the theories….help each other out!!

• 1.) YOU ARE A MAIN SEQUENCE STAR…• a.) List the color, surface temperature, and luminosity of your star

• 2.) Name at least 1 star that is a main sequence star

• 3.) What does the graph tell you about star A?

• 4.) Plot the stars below on the graph. List what color each of those stars would be• Star D (Temperature 5000, Luminosity 50), Color:___________• Star E (Temperature 15000, Luminosity 25), Color:___________• Star F (Temperature 9000, Luminosity 1), Color:___________• Star G (Temperature 17000, Luminosity 99), Color:___________

• 5.) Draw the heliocentric and geocentric pictures below

• Prep for asessment:• Extra credit- work as a group to solve these answers • 1.) I run 10 miles per hour. How long would it take me to run 50 miles. • 2.) 50 ml to L (1000 mL= 1 L)• 3.)My car gets10 miles per gallon, if I drove 100 miles then how many galloons did I use up?

• Do Now- 5-10

• Review HR with interactive diagram- 5

• Helio vs Geo- 10

• Other solar systems have other suns….lead back to HR…answer questions 15

• If time- conversions

Ms. WareEarth ScienceL.T. I can understand the relationship between the distanceBetween foci and the eccentricity.10/20/09

W.O.T.D.: Ellipse- the shape the planet makes when it orbits around the sun

Do now: 1.) If a planet has a mostly oval orbit,Where do you think the planet would be fastest? Why?

2.) Which letter wouldit be winter? A

BC

D

Sun

Calculate the eccentricity of the ellipse below:

Formula:eccentricity = distance between foci length of major axis

length of major axis

4 miles8 miles

Lets try a problem!

Distance between foci: 4Length of major axis: 6

Distance between foci: 1Length of major axis: 8

4/6= .67….MORE ELLIPTICAL!!!

1/8= .125 MORE CIRCULAR!!!

STAR

FOCI DISTANCE= 60 mmMajor Axis= 90 mm

A

B

C

D

Questions: 1.) What is the approximate eccentricity?2.) As the planet moves from A to C, what happen to the gravitational attraction?3.) At which position does planet Q have the greatest velocity?
