The calling of the birdThe whistling of a cricketA song that cannot be stoppedNature’s calls
The sounds are everlastingIt does not matter where you go
The bell like churchTelling us to come into our learning place
The trees that surround us like a community of people that love usThat is an image of natureNature is everlasting
A place
It feels pure
You feel safe.
You can 2ind it anywhere.
No matter where you may be it’s there.
Sometimes it’s hard to 2ind–
Other times you won’t even have to search for it.
You can 2ind that place whenever you choose.
Here or there–

Superhero by Jaylan Watson Joe was a wimp but this story is not about some kid being wimp, it
is about a super hero. Joe was the biggest wimp in the school. He was not hated, but no one liked him because he liked different things than the popular crew. Joe had no friends; nobody liked to talk to him. So his lunches where lonely for him, but there was one girl that made keep him coming back, Maggie Griffin. She was the nicest to Joe. Then there was Rick Mitchel. He hated Joe just because Maggie liked to say HI to Joe and not Rick. This story starts on a normal Monday. Rick was always meaner to Joe on Mondays, I guess because he did not get enough sleep. Joe has to ride the bus to school, because his mom always had to go to work early in the morning. Every time he would get on the bus, Rick would be standing there waiting for him. When Joe got to school he would go to his locker and wait for Maggie to pass by. She would always have to go that way to get to her class. That was what made him happy each day. He had to be careful about what time he got there because Rick had the same class. This time he got the timing way off. Then it happened, Rick saw Joe. Joe did not see him right behind him. Rick said, " What you doing looking at girls, you know that is my girl." Then Rick and his friends beat him up. Maggie heard all the noise and turned around and said, "STOP!! Why are you beating him up? She stopped Rick from beating up Joe any more. Then she said, " What is your reason for beating up Joe?” Joe was stunned, He did not think that Maggie knew his name, and that she would stand up for him. Then Rick said, " He was staring at you, I want to protect my girl". Then Maggie said" I am not your girl for the last time". Then she said, ”Come on Joe." She walked Joe to class; Joe was speechless. Then Joe heard, Rick say, " She still wants me.” After Maggie walk him to class Joe had a grin on his face for the rest of the day. When he went home he was still smiling. He even went to sleep smiling. The next day he missed the bus so he walked. The thing was that Rick missed the bus too, but Joe did not know that. Then he heard Rick behind him. Saying, "Hey you wimp, you better run. You made me look bad in front of my girl. Get ready for another beat down". He started running after Joe. Joe started running as fast as he could, down the sidewalk and all though the neighborhood. He ran all the way to school and hid in the nearest locker. So after he was done hiding from Rick he went to class. He was two minutes late. He was never late so when he got to class there was only one seat left. It was right next to Maggie. Joe sat down, and said nothing. She said hi but he did not say any thing back. He just looked at her and waved. His heart was beating a mile a minute. After school he missed the bus on purpose because he did not want to have to deal with Rick and friends. The thing was that Rick and
friends where waiting for him on the sidewalk. He saw them and went the other way away from them. But they saw him. They started chasing after him saying, “you’re going to get it so bad, you are not getting away this time.” Joe knew of one safe place, the junkyard. There were dogs there and he was faster than them so he could get away from the dogs. He was running so hard that he did not know where he was going. He ran in to the toxic plant. Rick and friends were not paying attention ether, so they ran right in to the toxic plant too. So Joe realized that was in a toxic plant that said DO NOT ENTER. Then he came to a long walkway with toxic waste on the sides. He kept on running till he saw that he was cornered. He looked and there were people in front and people in the back. Then Rick came up to him and said nothing, he just pushed him in to the waste. As Joe was falling all he could think about is being in his bed. Then Rick and friends walked away from the site. When they walked away they did not see him come out. Joe woke up and he was in his bed thinking, “How did I get here and was it a dream?” Then when he gets up he goes to the bathroom and splashed some cold water on his face and looked in the mirror had Red dark skin, black and red eyes, sharp teeth and a tail. One thought of one thing getting pay back on Rick. He takes a step forward and he ends up in his bed. How did this happen? What ever he thinks, he teleports there. Joe had super powers. He never thought that it would happen to him, he thought that it only happened in comic books. He knew where he got it; it was from the toxic waste. He just went sleep. When he woke up in the morning he flashed in to the kitchen. His mom was gone, so she did not know what was going on. He ate some food then flashed at school. Everyone was amazed by his red skin and tail. Even Maggie came up to him and said, “What happened to you?” He said, “I got super powers.” Then Rick and friends walked in and said, “I thought you were dead.” Joe flashed over to him and punched him in the face. All people heard were some flashes and then boom! All of them were down on the ground. Rick and his friends were out cold. Some weeks later Joe started talking to Maggie, and soon they where dating. Rick got over her and stopped messing with Joe, and he lived the rest of his life being a super hero. !
Chapter I Getting Home By Jake Taylor “Emily, I’m not your mother. She is. ” The news fell hard on Emily’s chest. Like a rock, a mental rock-‐
crushing everything she knew and believed in. It ate her up inside. Consuming her. Her whole life… It hadn’t really started yet. She looked up at her mother-‐ desperate to see some glint of mischief in her eye-‐for her to say just kidding! -‐ For it to be some kind of crazy prank-‐and this was just a really distant relative whom she had never seen before. She looked up at her supposed mother, Amy. She looked at her and saw nothing at all in her eyes that was fake; or joking with her; she was smiling down at her-‐a smile full of love and warmth. Love and warmth that she knew she would never be able to return. She started to sob.
“Oh Emily,” her ‘Mother’ said. She tried to hug her, but Emily backed away-‐turned and ran to her room. Not sure if this was real or just a terrible nightmare-‐she hoped it was a nightmare. That way she could wake up and tell her mother all about it. And she would laugh at how silly it was and they would sip hot cocoa and watch as the snow came down in its heaps. And all of her 12 years of life actually matter at all. If only. That was the phrase that kept circling around in her head all night. If only… if only… if only… she drifted into sleep as her time as a member of the Casey family expired.
“Oh Rosa, I am not sure she really loves me!” Amy cried as a kind of
emptiness filled her. It replaced her guiltiness and made her feel worse. She hadn’t seen her daughter since birth and Emily hadn’t even pretended to like her when she finally had. Those 12 years could never be replaced. 12 years of days at the park, sleepovers, birthday parties, ice cream cones, snow days, scraped knees and swimming in lakes.
“You just have to give her time, Amy. She is a child and is very attached to who she thinks is her mother. Imagine if you realized who your real mother was when you were 12 years old. Wouldn’t you feel the same way?”
“ Yes, I suppose.” Amy’s mind now was like that huge storm on Jupiter. Thoughts swirling in her brain-‐which had become a warzone for a battle of emotions. If only Emily could love her. And realize who she was.
“Well I must go now. I will see you in the morning!” As she drove through the blizzard back to her home that one phrase
kept circling through her head. If only… if only… if only…
Brotherhood by Katie Golding
I heard Doug and Joe scream at each other in the background, while I checked the fences in the wood of our properties. Dad always made us do this once a month to make sure the animals don’t get out of our farm.
Doug caught up to me saying "Why do we have to bring him along?"
I looked at him with a stern look “Dad is never around to take care of him, which means we take care of him."
I turned around making sure Johnny was keeping up, but of course he was staring off into space.
He noticed me staring at him, and turned around to say "Why is there a girl laying on the ground?"
Doug took a quick glance at me with an expression on his face that said Johnny had finally lost it. We both ran to him and looked at the blond girl laying on the ground. Thoughts raced through my head. Seeing that dead girl on the ground made me feel dizzy. Doug took a step forward and picked up a crumpled note that layed next to her body. He opened the folded note and took a deep breath in before reading. His look on his face said it all; I knew it was something bad.
He said to me "This note is in Dad’s handwriting."
I snatched the note from Doug’s hands not believing in what he said. I looked at it not believing what my eyes saw in the bottom right corner. It even had his signature. I knew Doug was thinking the same questions that I was. Did dad help kill this girl? How does she know him?
All three of us got back to the house safe and sound, but all of us were a little shaken up. We decided to go up to my room to discuss the situation.
When we all got into the room Doug shut the door and said “If Dad did have something to do with that girl being dead we can’t confront him about it, all he would do is deny it.”
None of us could argue with that. He would ground us for even thinking of the thought but for asking him he would punish us.
Johnny hadn’t said anything since seeing the girl, but finally he spoke “Dad is never around and we don’t see him much. We don’t know what he does in that time we don’t see him.”
That was also true. He never talked much about his past or our family tree.
I finally said “Before we make any conclusions let’s check it out more. Doug can go to the library while Johnny and I look around here for more clues.”
Everyone nodded at the idea and we were off doing our own thing, but before we left Doug said “We need to stick together even if we don’t get along well.”
He was looking right at Johnny when saying it. That afternoon we met back at my room.
I said “There is not a single clue that Dad met the dead girl or ever had something to do with the killing.”
Johnny searched through the stacked papers, bookcases, and even father’s computer but nothing was there.
Doug took out a yellow folder and opened it he said “I found these two articles that you might want to take a look at.” He picked up them both up and passed one to me first.

A Fractured Fairy Tale by Peter Johnson
Yakky arranged for a substitute teacher to come on the day she left to
work out the deal at their restaurant. The sub’s name was “Wicked Witch.” Wicked said she came all the way from her gingerbread house in the Dark Woods. “Can’t do evenin’’s though. I’m ‘spectin’ two kids fo dinna named Hansel and Gretel,” croaked Wicked, as Yakky remembered. “That’s fine. Preschool ends at 1:00 anyway.” Yakky had said. Yakky packed a bag full of grass, for a snack along the way. She also brought her Poisoned Apple Pad. Yakky had purchased Google maps on her computer incase she got lost. She had tried the breadcrumb thing, but technology was way better. She put all of it into a leather satchel. Yakky said bye to all the children in her daycare and then set off into the Dark Woods. Soon she came along to a huge wolf sniffing a rabbit’s hole. Now, Yakky was a smart Yak and knew that wolfs actually ATE Yaks. Yakky was trying to sneak around the great beast when one of her hooves broke a twig. “CRACK!” The wolf suddenly jerked its head towards Yakky at the sound of the noise. “Well, well, what do we have here?” growled the wolf. “A nice juicy yak, wandering in the woods.” Yakky’s throat closed up; no words came out. The wolf grinned a toothy grin, green braces glinting in the sun. “That little girl in the red hoodie escaped me, but YOU won’t!” The wolf lunged, those horrible braces speeding towards her. Yakky did the only thing that came to her; she smacked him in the snout with her satchel. The wolf yelped and limped off, whimpering, with a few less teeth, only the metal wire. “Good Riddance!” Scolded Yakky as he disappeared into the gloomy forest. Yakky checked her computer. It had a crack through the middle, with a fang sticking out of it. Yakky sighed. It wouldn’t turn on. “I bought that for 800 gold coins!” she muttered. Yakky trotted along, continuing her journey.

acharBook Review
Holes is a great book about a boy named S tan l ey Ye lna t s . He mysteriously ends up at a place called Camp Green Lake which isn’t green, nor does it have a lake. He meets new people there, teaches a kid to read, and tries to find out why
he is always at the wrong place at the wrong time. His father is struggling to change the world, and his mother is avoiding a song that makes her unhappy all the time. Will Stanley get a second chance, or will he stay at Camp Green Lake forever?
Holes by Louis Sachar
Holes is written to make you feel like you were at Camp Green Lake with Stanley Yelnats. It is part realistic-fiction and part mystery. Sanley’s father is trying to make and sell a product, and his mom is trying to forget about a song that annoys her so much. Stanley, on the other hand, is just a regular boy who goes to school but doesn’t have many friends--until he goes to Camp Green Lake. There he meets friends, gets a nickname, and teaches his friend how to read. If you buy Holes it is worth every penny, and you will end up reading it multiple times. It is a very good book that makes you feel what it’s like to be taken away from your family for a long period of time and not be able to have a life of your own, except for digging holes.
I would rate Holes a four-star, because it’s so sad at some times and so happy at others. It makes you wonder a lot of things you wouldn’t wonder if you didn’t read Holes. I would recommend it to anybody who is 9 and up. I also would recommend it to anybody who is looking for a mystery novel and is willing to sit on the edge of their seat while they read. Scenes From The Movie Holes
To Read Holes
Mama Dip’s Restaurant in Carrboro: This restaurant will definitely satisfy your need for southern. Founded in 1976 by Mildred Edna Cotton Council, she only had $64. 40 of that was used for food, and 24 was used to make change. She used the money from breakfast for lunch, and lunch for dinner, and took home $135 her first day in business. The reason her name is Mama Dip is because she had long arms so she could reach down in the water barrel. That’s some good stuff!
