![Page 18: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Remember:
Ancient Greece, which was close to Egypt, had myths too.
![Page 19: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Echo and Narcissus
Echo loved to be the first person to know everything that happened to everybody. She was a gossip and busybody.
![Page 20: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
One time, Echo saw Zeus cheating on his wife, Hera, with a nymph.
![Page 21: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
As Hera was about to discover this, Echo distracted her with pointless talk. She
tried to keep Hera from learning the truth.
![Page 22: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Hera discovered that Echo was more concerned
about getting involved in other people’s business instead of taking care of
her own. Therefore, Hera cursed Echo as a
punishment.
![Page 23: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Hera’s curse was that Echo couldn’t say any of her own words, instead
she could only repeat the last words others spoke to
her.
![Page 24: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
“You were trying to trick the queen of the gods. This serves you right!” said Hera
![Page 25: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
“You right,” repeated Echo.
![Page 26: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
“Of course I’m right; I’m a goddess,” responded
Hera.
![Page 27: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Echo was sad and distraught. She
wandered through the woods alone crying.
![Page 28: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
As she wandered, she saw the most beautiful man she had ever seen before. He was perfect
in every way.
![Page 29: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Narcissus was resting by a pool of water,
staring at his reflection.
![Page 30: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Narcissus was so impressed with his own
beauty.
He refused to pay any attention to Echo .
![Page 31: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Narcissus remarked, “Please don’t tell me you’re one of those maidens who thinks they love me!”
“Love me,” answered Echo.
![Page 32: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
“No, I won’t love you. I haven’t found anyone worthy of my love,” Narcissus rudely corrected Echo.
![Page 33: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Echo’s spirit was crushed and
her heart withered. She climbed into a cave and began to weep and weep.
![Page 34: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Echo’s body withered in her
sadness, and all that was left
was her voice—an echo.
![Page 35: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
And Narcissus sat by a stream staring at his own reflection. He
suddenly feel in love with his own reflection
realizing he would never find anyone as perfect
as himself.
![Page 36: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
As he gazed at his own reflection, in love with himself, his body turned into
a golden flower—the narcissus.
![Page 37: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)

Echo—repeating a sound, a sound that’s heard again
Narcissistic—too much self-love, fascination or obsession with one’s self

List out four traits for each character
Echo Narcissus
![Page 43: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
Now, let’s write a summary
explaining the story Echo and
Narcissus.
![Page 44: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
We’re going to use a special
formula to help us write our
summary:
SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO
![Page 45: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
You put a name or event for
each word. Somebody=whoWanted=a goal or desireBut=problemSo=solution
![Page 46: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
Now, try to fill in each space
using the story about Hades
and Persephone.
![Page 47: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Here is my summary:
Echo, who lost her ability to speak, fell in love with Narcissus, who only could love himself, so she died of a broken heart.
![Page 48: Ms. Kidwell English 6 Lesson #9: prefix/suffix Mythology: “Echo and Narcissus” Writing Process: proofread](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062408/56649ec05503460f94bcb6ed/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
