3 years.

3 painful years. The 3 years that made my life a living hell. I just wanted to die. I wanted to give up but I wanted to get well. I don't want to leave the people I love. So I fought. I lived a new life. A life full of hope. A life full ofopportunities. Even with only about a year left to live, I'm living life to thefullest. Making a mark in this world.

My new life. New friends. New place. But something's missing..

Keith.

CHAPTER 1

I saw myself walking to a guy at the end of the bridge but another guy is pulling my arm from behind. I couldn't not see the person who's pulling my arm neitherthe person at the end of the bridge, all because of the fog.

"Please I need to get to him."

I said to the guy behind me.

"No you can't. I need you more than he needs you."

He said. I shrugged off his hand and eventually, he lets go of it. I walked towa

rds the end of the bridge. When I'm already in the middle of the bridge, the fogdisappears to reveal the guy at the end of the bridge.

*Beep* *Beep*

I had that dream again. For the past 3 years, I always have that dream every single day but I always wake up when the fog disappears.

6:00 am. Monday.Monday already? Argh. I just hate Mondays like Garfield does. I had no choice but to stand up and fix myself.

Beige: Dad, I need to go. Still have an early class.Dad: How about breakfast?Beige: No thanks. I'll just grab a bagel on my way to the university.Dad: Ok. Don't forget your medicines.

He always say that. He never gets tired.

Beige: Ok Dad.

I rode my bike on my way to the university. I'm living in the dorm of the univer

sity almost a year already. But I visit Dad one weekend of every month because Ipromised my Dad to do that.

Many things have changed since I left the Philippines about 3 year ago. I had gone through painful treatments, lonely days and even was in a coma for two days once. But I'm still thankful that God is still giving about 6 months to live.

Beige & Maine

It says on the door of the room.

Beige: Maine! Open the door. I forgot my key. It's already morning. We'll be late for our class.Maine: Wait! I'm right there.

Maine opened the door. She looked like she just woke up.Pupungas pungas pa. Hehe. Maine is my roommate, also a Filipino. We're both taking up BS major in EarlyChildhood Education.

Maine: You're early.Beige: I'm always early and F.Y.I, our next class is in 20 minutes.Maine: Sh!t. I forgot.

Maine rushed to the bathroom while I changed into a dress and put on some heels.

I also wore a dark blue trench coat. We get to wear anything we like here but in our first subject we need to dress a bit formal and that means wearing heels.

Beige: Hurry up Maine.Maine: I'm right there. I'm just fixing my hair.

She went out of the closet and got her things.

Maine: Let's go.

We walked to our class. While we were walking, there suddenly a guy that passedby us. He's new.

Beige Who was that?Maine: Who?Beige: The guy that passed by us. I've seen almost all of the students here in the university and I've only seen him now.Maine: Oh. Him? He's not exactly new. He went here for awhile, took off and now,he's here again. He took off when you were a sophomore.

It's so happens that I only went to this school in my junior year. I was so sickthat I need to study online for my freshman year of college.

Beige: Oh.

When I was walking to my next class, someone called me.

"Beige!"

It was Anna, the president of the photography organization in the university.

Beige: Anna! What is it?Anna: I would just like to talk to you about the upcoming exhibit. I would justask if you can contribute.Beige: Sure.Anna: Thank you very much. Just pass it when you have time.

Beige: Ok sure.Anna: Got to go. Thank you so much. Meeting tomorrow at 5. Ok?Beige: Ok.

Later that afternoon, with my polaroid camera I decided to look for inspirationfor the photo thingy Anna was talking about. When I got here in the states, I was always in the hospital with nothing to do so my Dad gave me a polaroid camerahe got from a thrift store. I took pictures and got addicted to it ever since.Now, I take pictures once in a while and I even joined the photography org. to learn more about photography. Recently, I bought a vintage camera from the thriftstore. It so cool that it still works. I don't know I just have these thing forvintage things.

I was walking and taking pictures when I saw the exact same guy that passed by Maine and I. He was at the end of the garden about to slash his wrist. I was so absorbed in looking at him that I accidentally pressed the button of my camera, taking a picture of him. He suddenly heard the click of my camera.

"Is anyone there?"

My first instinct was to run and so I did.CHAPTER 2

I woke up having the same dream but at the same time I can't forget that guy yes

terday. I looked at the clock 5 am. It's too early but I can't sleep so I stoodand fixed my things. I was fixing when that guy's picture fell. The picture wasoddly a nice one. It was a picture of the guy but because of the sun, his face was covered by the shadow of a tree.

I suddenly had an idea for the photo exhibit. I started taking pictures of my scars, the scars I got from my treatments with my polaroid camera. After that, I took them with the picture of the guy and placed in a paper as big a sketch pad.

Death is inevitable but it is not in our hands to take our life away. There arepeople who struggle just to live. They will do everything just to live. Yet, there are people who takes their own life like taking a candy from a baby.

I wrote below the pictures. Without me knowing it, I fell asleep. It is woke upat around 7 am.

Before going to class, I went to the photography room in the university to dropoff my project.

Beige: James! I'm putting my project in your desk okay? Give to Anna. It's forthe exhibit.James: Okay. Sure.

Meanwhile..

"Carl, there you are. When did you come back?"

Carl: Just yesterday.

"James, is that Carl that I heard come in?"

Carl: Yup. Anna, It's me.Anna: Welcome back. We missed you.James: Sorry for your loss.

James: That one? It was made by Beige. Oh I forgot. Anna, Beige submitted her piece for the exhibit.Carl: Beige?Anna: She's a novice here in the org. She joined when you left. Let me see that.

Anna took the photo from Carl.

Anna: Wow. That girl really is good and to think she's not taking photography.Carl: What is she taking?

Anna: BS major in Early Childhood Education, so far from photography isn't it? She's said she just likes taking pictures. What's with the interest in her all ofa sudden? Don't tell me..Carl: It's nothing. Mind your own business.Anna: Chill. Anyways, sorry about your Mom.Carl: It's okay.Anna: Are you really back?Carl: Yup. For good.

Back to Beige..

Later that afternoon, I went to the hospital to have a check-up. Sometimes, I get tired if these check-ups, I'm going to die anyways. But I have no choice, so I

still go.

Beige: Hello Nurse Jen! Is Baby Justin awake? I have a stuff toy for him.Nurse Jen: He's here. Come in.

Before going to Dr. Jeff's office, I go to Baby Justin's room. Baby Justin is abandoned by his mother but more unfortunate is that, he has leukemia. He's here in the hospital, sponsored by the government to get cured. I hope he'll get cured. It's okay for me to die if he'll live until he's 90 or something.

Beige Baby Justin! Beige has a cute stuff toy for you.Baby Justin: Beige! Hug!

I hugged him and carried him to the window to get some sunlight.

Nurse Jen: Some interns came today.Beige: Really?Nurse Jen: One even looked like Baby Justin. He also likes Baby Justin so much like you do.Beige: Well, who wouldn't like this cute baby? Right Baby Justin? Nurse Jen, take Baby Justin. I still need to go to Dr. Jeff for a check up.Nurse Jen: Okay.

After that, I went to Dr. Jeff's office.

Beige: Dr. Jeff..

I knocked at the door.

Dr. Jeff: Come in.Beige: Hello Dr. Jeff. Everything alright?Dr. Jeff: I should ask you that.Beige: I'm alright. I feel that I'm getting better. My life is slowly going backto normal.Dr. Jeff: That's good.Beige: With about 2 years of hell. It is.Dr. Jeff: Don't say that.Beige: You're just like your older brother, Dr. Jeff. We need to accept everything as it is. If it's like hell then it is like hell.Dr. Jeff: What I'm doing is called reassuring. My brother is right. You are stubborn.Beige: You got that right.

I winked.

Dr. Lee: So, let's start the tests.

After taking the test..

Dr. Jeff: Just go back tomorrow for the test results. We'll schedule your last chemo also tomorrow. Okay?Beige: Okay. Thanks Dr. Jeff.

I was walking in the hallway out of the hospital when I suddenly bumped into someone.

"Beige.."

It was Keith. He's in a doctor's attire and with a girl in the same attire. It is as if my past suddenly pushed me and said 'You'll never escape me.'

Beige: Keith! It's been awhile. You're a doctor now?

I faked a smile.

Keith: It is. Soon. I'm just an intern. How are you?Beige: Fine.Keith: Glad to here that. What do you do?Beige: I'm also studying. BS major in Early Childhood Education.

Then there was awkward silence. Keith saw that I was looking at the girl besidehim.

Keith: Beige, this is Xandra, my girlfriend. Xandra, this is Beige, my classmatein high school.

I don't know what hurt me more. The fact that Keith has a girlfriend now or thathe now considers me as just a classmate in high school and no longer a best friend or even a just a friend.

Xandra extended her hand for me to shake it. I took her hand.

Xandra: Nice to meet you.

I left the hospital with tears on my face.CHAPTER 3

Maine: So happy you could join us. I though you had a meeting today?Beige: It was moved tomorrow. James had an emergency.

After the hospital incident, I wiped my tears and decided to go to the bistro tosee Maine and her boyfriend.

Beige: I saw Keith in the hospital. He's studying to be a doctor and he has nowa girlfriend.

I took the glass of water and drink all of it's contents.

"Did I hear that right? He now has a girlfriend?"

I nodded.

"And things get more complicated. If only.."

Beige: Please Ian. You're doing it again.

"Putting salt in your wound again for the nth time. Fine. I'll shut up."

Did I mention Ian is Maine's boyfriend? They met when Ian visited me a year ago.He also stayed here in the states for Maine. I'm happy for him because he already found the perfect girl for him. I was afraid he'll never forget what happenedbetween us but he moved on and we're still best friends.

Ian: Order now.Beige: Caesar salad, baby back ribs with mash potato and a slice of apple pie.

I said to the waiter.

Maine: Woah. That's a lot. Can she finish all of that?Ian: She sure can. She eats a lot when she's mad or frustrated.

The next day..

With a painful headache, I really a have huge feeling today would be a crappy day. I wanted to just rest but I still need to do lots of things.

Before going to my first class I first went to the store to get a can of soda. Itook the soda and paid for it but when I was paying for it. Ian called me so Iwent outside to take the call.

Ian: I'm here at the garden of the university. I just need to talk to you about

something.Beige: Ok. I'll be there.

I was about to go the garden when I realized I forgot my wallet and the soda I bought, so I went back. I was about to come in of the store when someone bumped me. He was opening a soda can. I looked over the counter of the store where I left my wallet and soda. This guy stole my drink. Little old mean me kicked in andfollowed the guy who bumped into me. Took the soda from his hand, drank it in one gulp and left. After that, I went to the university's garden.

So I sat down on the bench where he was sitting.

Beige: What's the matter? Are you okay? Did Maine and you have fight?Ian: I should ask you the same thing.Beige: Huh?Ian: Beige, Maine and I didn't have a fight. I just wanted to talk to you aboutKeith. I know deep inside you are hurting. I'm your best friend remember? I maynot be with you that much anymore but I'm still here.Beige: I know that Ian.

Ian looked at the sky.

Ian: I was a wreck after you left the Philippines. I spend my day sulking over what happened if you didn't left and just accepted me.Beige: But Ian you know..Ian: I know, I know you did that to save your life and you can't love me no matter what I do. I will just forever be the best friend. So I fixed myself. Did everything to make everything alright and it did. Fate even cooperated with me whenmy Dad told me that I'd be studying here in the states. When I got here, I immediately visited you. When we met again, I wanted to hug you right there and thenbut I stopped myself. I realized if I did, my feelings for you will grow intense again. Then I met Maine. At first, she was just the rebound girl but I never k

new she was easy to fall in love with. So I did, I found my perfect girl in her.Don't worry, Maine knows about this. Why am I telling you this exactly? Becausemaybe you should do to. Live your life and just be happy.Beige: I know. We cannot do anything with Keith. He already found someone else and I'm happy. I've been praying he finds the perfect girl for him, the one he really loves and he did. It's painful for me. But you know me Ian, it will pass eventually. And with about a few months to live, I can manage. Surviving and evenwaiting for a miracle for me to get cured is what I'm doing right now.

I smiled at Ian.

Ian: Just remember, I'm always here.Beige: I will.

I stood up.

Beige: Let's take a walk.

We were walking when I saw Keith walking towards us. I suddenly stopped.

Beige: It's Keith.Keith: I didn't know you too ended up together.Ian: We didn't.

Then the was silence. Suddenly, Maine appeared.

Maine: Hi Beige! Hi Hon! Kanina ko pa kayo hinahanap.

He kissed Ian on the cheek.

Ian: Hello Hon.Maine: Uhm.. Hello!Beige: Maine, this is Keith. Keith, this is Maine. Ian's girlfriend.Maine: Oh. So you are Keith.Keith: Nice to meet you.Maine: Nice to meet you too.

Ian and Maine left.

Keith: Is there a coffee shop near here? Let's talk there.Beige: Follow me.

We went to the coffee shop.

Keith: The results were okay. You're last chemo would be three weeks from now.

He handed me the envelop with the results.

Keith: I got it from Dr. Jeff to see you personally.Beige: Oh. Thank you.

I smiled.

Keith: Let's order.Beige: Sure.

The waiter approached us.

Keith: Ladies first.Beige: Cafe mocha, make it decaf and a slice of blueberry cheesecake.Waiter: How about you sir?Keith: Caff Americano and a slice of lemon sponge cake.

The waiter repeated our order.

Keith: Yup. That's all. Thank you.

The waiter left.

Keith: Nothing has changed. You still look beautiful.

I smiled.

Beige: Marunong ka pa lang mambola. Hehe. You too Keith, you're looking better now a days.

He laughed. He then notices that I'm still wearing the music box necklace he gave me.

Keith: That necklace..

He pointed to the necklace.

Beige: This one?

I touched the necklace.

Beige: It's from my best friend. You may know him. His name is Keith Ramos.

He laughed.

Beige: Did you receive the gift I left you?

Keith: Yup. Thank you. So.. how are you? How's your Dad?Beige: Fine. Living a happy life. Still studying though like you and still hoping God will extend His deadline. Dad's okay. Since I'm living in dorm of the university he's always alone but once in a while I visit him. How about Ate Angela and your parents?Keith: Ate Angela got married last year and now staying in the Philippines. My parents are still here in the states. I also visit them once in a while.

The waiter arrived with our orders.

Beige: You and Xandra, I'm very happy for you two. How long have you two been together?

This conversation keeps getting more awkward.

Keith: About a year already.Beige: Oh. How long have you been here?Keith: About three years. I decided to go back here and study medicine.Beige: Oh. I see.

I took a sip of my coffee.

Keith: Heard from Dr. Jeff that you're getting better.Beige: That's right. I may have only a few months to live but the chance of me g

etting cured is increasing. If God is good I may live even until I'm 80 or 90. We'll never know. All I need now is a miracle.Keith: What happened to Ian? I thought he loved you.

'I should say the same thing to you. I thought you loved me.' I wanted to say but instead I said..

Beige: He still does but as a friend. You know as much as he loves me but I can't repay that the way he wanted me to. I only think of him as a friend. But I'm happy he didn't dwell on that and found somebody else worthy of his love. Like you do, I'm happy that you've found your perfect girl.

The emotion on his face changed.

Keith: I did. Thank you.Beige: I forgot to ask you why you wanted to talk to me.Keith: Nothing. I just want to talk to you again. It's been awhile right?Beige: It is. Many things has changed.Keith: Many things has also stayed the same.Beige: I agree.

I took a sip again of my coffee and he does too.

Beige: Nothing will change between us, Keith. Remember that, so if you need me,you know where to find me. I'll be always here. You're my first best friend right?

Keith: Yes and I thank you for that.

I took the last sip of my coffee and the last bite of my cake.

Beige: I need to go. I still have a org. meeting this afternoon. Hope you understand. Here's the payment for what I ordered.

Keith gave me my money back.

I turned around and a motorcycle is coming my way. My reaction time is bad so the motorcycle bumped me.

I fell and busted my knee.

The one riding the motorcycle approached me.

Beige: Do you think with a busted knee I'm okay?

I looked up and it was Carl again. What's with this guy that I always bumped into him? He carried me and sat me on the bench nearby. He got a handkerchief fromhis pocket and wiped the blood on my knee. I blushed. Wait. Why am I blushing?

He took something from his motorcycle and tended my busted knee.

Beige: You always carry a first aid kit with you?Carl: Just today. The clinic asked me to buy something for the clinic.Beige: Oh.

He put some medicine on my busted knee.

Beige: Ouch!Carl: Sorry and sorry too. My motorcycle suddenly acted funny.Beige: It's okay. It's somewhat my fault too. I have a slow reaction time.Carl: Wait. The one in the garden, the one in store, the one in the photographymeeting and now this. We always bump into each other.Beige: I remember the photography meeting and this one but not the store or thegarden thing.Carl: The one in the picture and the one whom you took the soda from.Beige: You're the guy in the garden and the soda you were drinking wasn't mine?

Dad dropped me at the university 'cause I still have a class in the afternoon. Before leaving, he said he'll be gone for a while since he has a project in New York. I kissed him on the cheeks goodbye and went to my class.

Tutoring services starts again. Yours is Room 845.

During the class, Maine passed me a note regarding the tutoring services. It's atutoring service for students. The students teach other students in subject they need help on. It's voluntary. I joined the services to help other students. Doing good deeds wouldn't hurt right?

Later that day, I went for an early dinner and went to Room 845 for my tutee. Iarrived in Room 845 and knocked at the door.

Beige: Uhm. It's for the tutoring service of the university. Are you..?

A guy opened the door.

"No. It's my roommate. Wait. Carl, the tutor is here. I'll get going. Come inside. It's okay."

The guy left and I went inside. Inside, I saw a guy reading a book while lying on his bed.

"That was my roommate, Michel. By the way, I'm.."

When he puts down the book..

Carl: You again.

Beige: I should say the same thing.

It's that Carl guy again.

Carl: Fate is playing a trick on us.Beige: I don't like fate's trick.

He laughed.

Carl: How's is it?

He pointed to my knee. After that, he sat on the chair facing his study table.

Beige: It's still a bit painful but I can manage.Carl: Sit down. We only got 2 hours.

He motioned me to sit down on the chair beside him. So I did.

Beige: So.. what do you want me to teach you?Carl: Uhm. How about analytical geometry?Beige: Ok. Analytical geometry, it is.

I got the book and started the lesson. I was discussing to him somethings when Inotice he wasn't listening and just staring at me smiling.

Beige: Do you know you have a freaky smile?Carl: Really? It's the first time someone said that to me.Beige: Focus on the lesson okay?

We went back to the lesson.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

Beige: Excuse me. I'll just take this call.

I went outside the room.

Beige: Hello?Nurse Jen: Come here quickly.Beige: Nurse Jen? Why?

I suddenly heard male voices in the background fighting.

Nurse Jen: Your friend, Ian and the intern, the one named Keith are fighting.Beige: What? Ian and Keith are fighting? Okay, Nurse Jen. Thank you. I'll be there as soon as possible.

I went back inside Carl's room.

Beige: I think we need to continue this tomorrow. Something happened.Carl: What is it?Beige: I explain it to you later. I need to get to Pellegrino hospital. ASAP.

I got my things and when I was about to get out of the door, Carl took his jacket and pulled my hand.

Carl: I'll take you to the hospital.CHAPTER 6

"Xandra!"

Xandra: Dana, what is it?Dana: Come quick. It's Keith..Xandra: Why?

I was studying something in the laboratory when Dana called me. I immediately followed her. I was stunned when I saw Keith fighting with a guy.

Xandra: Stop it! Keith! Stop it!

People, including myself tried to stop them but they can't be stopped.

"Why are you doing this to her? A girlfriend? Are you nuts Keith?"

The guy said to Keith then punched Keith on the face.

Keith: How dare you say that to me Ian? She pushed me away. I told her I love her. I'm even willing to take care of her.

Who are they talking about? Suddenly, I just saw Keith punching the Ian guy back.

Ian: Have ever thought when she pushes you away, she means the opposite? That she wants you to be beside her. She only have a few months to live Keith. She needs you. What are you doing now? You know I love her but I love her very much thatI gave her to you because I know she loves only you very much and you'll take care of her very well.Keith: How can I do that if she left me to go here. I tried to stop her but it was too late. She wanted me to move on and find the perfect girl. So I did.

Then suddenly a girl the I met a few days ago, Beige was I think her name, arrived.

Beige: Stop it! Ian! Keith! Stop it! For Pete's sake!

Beige shouted so loudly that all of the people in the hallway looked at her. Keith and Ian stopped fighting.

Ian: Beige..Beige: Para kayong mga hayop ah. Tinalo ninyo pa yung mga manok na naglalaban sasabungan.

Beige stormed off. I immediately went to Keith to check on him.

Back to Beige..

I was shocked with what I saw. Are they nuts? This is why I sometimes don't getguys. Violence is not the answer. I'm really ashamed and mad with what Ian did.I went out of the hospital to blow the steam off. I was sitting on the bench when my head suddenly hurts badly. The intense emotions I've been experiencing lately makes my attacks frequent.

It hurt so bad. Carl must have heard my scream when suddenly came to me.

Carl: Beige, what's wrong? Help! Anybody!

Then suddenly everything went black. The last thing I remember was that Carl wascarrying me into the emergency room.

I suddenly woke up with Carl, Ian and Dr. Jeff by my side.

Dr. Jeff: Feeling better?

I nodded.

Dr. Jeff: I know you seldomly get attacks for the past few months already but because of the stress you are encountering now, you're getting attacks often thanusual.Beige: I know and more severe attacks too than usual.

I saw Carl sitting in a chair beside Ian looking all worried.

After our visit to the museum, we decided to stop by the beach. It is just weirdbecause I was wearing a dress with a blazer and some heels. So I took off my heels and blazer.

It was starting to get dark so we decided to eat dinner before coming back to the university.

and left me here with Carl. Since it's too late to go back to the university, Idecided we just stay the night at our house. It's just a few blocks from here.I wish I had my bicycle with me but I don't so we walked to our house. I got there but no one's home. I forgot Dad has work in Ohio.

I placed him in the guest room bed, took of his shoes and covered him the blanket. Man! He is heavy. Good thing I take vitamins. I would have collapsed if I didn't. Hehe. But because of the tiredness I'm feeling, I got headache. I got waterfrom the refrigerator and drank my medicine. The next day..

Beige: I'm in my Dad's house. Don't worry. I'll be back later for my afternoon class.

I was talking on the phone with Maine when I saw Carl walking to my direction.

Carl: Where am I?Beige: You're in our house. You got drunk last night so I took you here. Good thing my class would be in the afternoon. Your motorcycle is still in front of therestaurant. I informed them that we'll get it later. Good thing the owner was kind enough take it inside.

Carl: Our house? You and..?Beige: My Dad. He actually is the one living here since I'm already living in the university. He's an architect but he's in Ohio for a project. Set the table. We'll be eating breakfast. It's in the cabinet to your left.Carl: Ok.

He did what I said.

After eating..

Beige: You may take a shower in your room. There's a bathroom there if you noticed. I'll just get some clothes from my Dad's closet that he's no longer using and fits you.

He laughed a little. I looked for some clothes in Dad's closet while Carl took ashower. When I found some clothes, I knocked on the door of the room where Carlis in.

I was packing for my stay in the hospital and Maine is helping me pack. Few weeks have already past and it's time for my last chemo.

Maine: What if the chemo and the procedure you said wouldn't work?Beige: Let's just hope for the best but if doesn't then bye-bye world.Maine: You make death sound so easy. It's not easy to lose a love one okay. Paano na kami ni Ian, Dad mo at pati na rin si Keith?Beige: Stop it, Maine. I don't want to talk about this. Remember, you'll tutor Carl later. You know him right?Maine: Yeah. What's with that Carl anyway? Not that I'm jealous or what but you're spending a lot of time with him now a days.Beige: I just like spending time with him and we're just friends and friends, hangout.Maine: How showbiz.

I threw a pillow at her. We both laughed.

Maine: Seriously, is he just a rebound guy or you are starting to have feelingswith him.

I just had my chemo. I'm still weak and still have no appetite. I woke up laterthat night with three figures by my side.

Dr. Jeff: Sorry to wake you up. I was just checking on you.

I saw Dr. Jeff with Keith and Xandra by his side.

Dr. Jeff: I know you're still weak but as of the tests, your body responded wellto the chemotherapy. Your schedule for the Neurolaser procedure would be next month. I know a month waiting is already too much since I know you only have a few months to live but we're still waiting for the machine.

I sat up and fixed my bandana.

Beige: It's okay.

I said weakly.

Dr. Jeff: We'll just be checking on you from time to time. We, being Dr. Ramos,

Dr. Vega and I.Xandra: Keith and I will really take care of you. Keith did you know about this?That she has cancer and she's dying? Sorry. I didn't know.Beige: No. It's okay. He doesn't know anything about this.

I lied.

Beige: Keith is just as shocked as you are.Dr. Jeff: You know each other?Xandra: Yes. Keith and Beige went to the same school in the Philippines.Dr. Jeff: Well, you never told me that one. Oh well. Let's go. The patient is still weak.

The next day..

I woke up the next day and carefully placed my wig on. For the past 3 years, I'mjust wearing a wig, only Maine, Ian and Dad new that. I have my real hair underneath it but it's just 1 to 3 inches.

I put on my trench coat and with my IV, I decided to take a walk after breakfast.

Keith: Where do you think you're going? You're still weak.

Keith took both of my arms and lead me back to my room.

Beige: Don't touch me. I'm not that weak anymore. I can manage it.

He took of his hands and I continued my walking. I was walking when I came intoKnight and Serena.

Serena: Beige! I haven't seen you in ages.Beige: Serena, Knight, how are you?

Knight was a former patient here in the hospital. He was diagnosed with a rare heart condition and his girlfriend Serena took care of him all throughout the pro

Later that afternoon, I decided to sit in the garden to just relax. Drink a cupof tea and take pictures with my polariod camera. Suddenly, I heard a familiar v

He suddenly took my arm. He held it tightly.

Keith: You wanted this right? Then why are you acting like this?

Then suddenly, Xandra appeared. He immediately let go my of arm.

Xandra: I didn't realize you were talking about something serious. Sorry to bother you but Dr. Jeff are calling us already.Beige: We're not. It's okay. You may take Keith. We're already done talking.

Keith wasn't able to do answer so he just went with Xandra and left.CHAPTER 12

"Do you have time? Haraboji is looking for you."

I was already okay and I'm already bored so I decided to go. I got dressed and fixed myself. I was taking my bandana off to put my wig when Keith suddenly wentin my room.

I saw Lolo Jeong looking at the picture.

I saw on the best beside Lolo Jeong while Keith sat on chair in the room not far from the bed.

Beige: Really? You never told me that one. Let me see.

I looked at the picture. It was Lolo Jeong's mother in a wedding gown with his father beside her.

Keith: Wow. She really looks like you. How did that happened?

Keith got curious and went to look at the picture.

Beige: Well, that's weird. I'm not Korean or Japanese so we can't be related. Hehe. Here you go.

I gave back the photo to Lolo Jeong.

Beige: Have you already taken your medicine?Lolo Jeong: Yeh.

I fixed Lolo Jeong's bed and got a book inside his bed side drawer.

Beige: Let's start okay?

He nodded. I started reading a sonnet from his book:

I stood up.

Beige: Go ahead. I know you lied to Xandra just to visit me. I know she doesn'tknow anything about us and let's just leave it that way. Don't worry. I'll go back to the hospital.

I saw that Keith didn't want to leave but he did. He must have felt guilty lyingto Xandra.

Later that afternoon..

After taking care of Lolo Jeong for a while, I decided to spend sometime by thebeach. I layed in the sand and closed my eyes.

"Please, I need to get to him. I love you but.."

"You love him more. But, I need you more than he needs you."

It seems so real but turns out it was just a dream. It was a girl and a guy in the dark room. I can't see their faces but I can clearly hear what they're saying.

I stood up and fixed myself. I decided to go back to the hospital after that.

Aicca: Thanks. Beige, can I ask you a favor?Beige: Sure. What is it?Aicca: I know it's all of sudden but, can you sing our wedding march song? We Are Man And Wife by Michelle Featherstone. I know you're a One Tree Hill fan and I'm sure you know it. Please Beige. It's your wedding gift to me.

We Are Man And Wife by Michelle Featherstone, the song Keith and I sang in Ria and Nate's wedding. Memories with Keith suddenly flashed inside my head.

Aicca: Beige..Beige: Sure. No prob. But my singing's a little rusty already. It's been a whilesince I sang in front of other people.Aicca: It's okay. Thank you.

The wedding is about to start. I sat on end of the second row and then waited for the wedding to start. I looked behind and saw Keith sitting with Xandra at 3 rows behind me. I forgot how handsome he looked in a white suit. His face looks abit mature already but I can still see the cute teenage guy that I had learn tolove. Suddenly, our eyes met but I immediately looked away. I stood up and wentto the right side of the gazebo where I will sing the song.

All the things you are to me, darling you have set me free. I'll always give you

what you need and what you deserve. All the joy and all this love. I know thatit is from above and now together there's enough to fill this world. 'Cause youare the love of my life. You are the love of my life, and now we're man and wife.

While I was singing, I saw Keith's expression changed as if he remembered something painful. Did the things that happened to us came back to his head like whathappened to me?

After the wedding, I looked for my table and realized I was sitting in a table with Keith and Xandra. Xandra saw me first.

Xandra: Beige, I didn't know you're also invited.

Beige: Aicca's a good friend.

Keith pulled Xandra's chair so that she can sit. He was about to sit when..

Xandra: Pull Beige's chair too.

So he did.

Beige: Thanks.Xandra: Are you feeling okay now?Beige: Yeah. It only takes a while for me to recover.Xandra: Oh. By the way, you have a nice voice. Your song brought tears in my eyes.

Beige: Thank you. I guess.Xandra: You should also sing in our wedding.Beige: You two are already getting married?Xandra: No. Not yet. Maybe 2 years from now but it would be nice if you did singin our wedding. So make sure you get well so that you'll be able to sing in ourwedding.

I just smiled. Suddenly the program started then the guys did the tossing of thewedding garter. After that, it's now our turn to catch the bouquet.

Xandra suddenly took my arm.

Xandra: Let's go.

As much as I don't want to, I can no longer disagree because Xandra kept pullingmy arm. You can really see she's excited for this one since it's Keith who caught the garter.

Aicca: Okay Girls. Ready?

I went to the very end of the crowd so that I would have a lesser chance to getthe bouquet. But as usual, fate played a tricked on me. The bouquet landed on myhands.

It was Aicca this time that pulled my arm and made me sit in a chair in the middle. Keith and I didn't really have a choice.

Aicca: Lift your dress a little.

So I did. Keith approached me and then crouched down to put the garter. We bothblushed.

Keith: Sorry.

As he placed the garter in the thigh, I just turn around to not meet his gaze. It was so awkward for both me and Keith but I know it is more awkward for Xandra.

After a while, I realized it was nearing sun down already so I decided to walk by the beach while the others are busy dancing and eating.

Keith: Beige..

I didn't know he followed me.

Keith: Beige, wait.Beige: Don't follow me. Bumalik na dun. Baka hinahanap ka na ni Xandra.

I was so surprised when Keith suddenly hugged me. I remained motionless and juststared at Xandra's expression. She saw everything.

Beige: Stop it.

I pushed him away from me.

Beige: Don't let Xandra's love go to waste. Love her not hurt her.

I turn around and went to the direction of the gazebo. Beige, don't cry. Don't e

ver cry. I immediately went back to the university after that. When I went back,I saw Carl was waiting outside the door of my room.

Beige: It's already late. What are you doing here?Carl: Waiting for you.Beige: Why are you waiting for me?Carl: It's because.. I just.. I just needed to talk to someone.Beige: Sorry Carl but I'm really tired. I need to rest. I still have a morning class tomorrow.Carl: Please..

We went inside. Maine was not there apparently, she stayed with Ian. At least the note that's placed in my bed side table says so.

Beige: Start. I'd be all ears.

I changed my clothes and washed my face to take off the make-up.

Carl: Remember that day you found me about to slash my wrist?

I sat on top of my bed while he sat on top of Maine bed which is just parallel to mine.

Beige: The day your taking a candy from a baby. I very much remember that.Carl: I did it because I just got tired of everything. I just don't want to feelpain anymore. Pain from the death of my mom and Nadine. My Mom died of a heartfailure and Nadine left me to be with Clark.Beige: Nadine was your ex-girlfriend and you're own step-brother took her from you?

He nodded.

Beige: Honestly, I feel your pain. I lost my mom to cancer when I was little. I

lived with my Dad after that. And I too got the same sickness she had when I wasyounger. But I still don't think taking one's life is the answer. We kept looking everywhere for something special yet we get surprised that the special thingsand even people is just around the corner or is just in front of us. You'll meet someone greater than Nadine and if Nadine is already happy with Clark. Let's just leave it at that.

He wasn't able to answer.

Beige: Dream, dream big. Follow that dream. Turn struggle into motivation. Love,love yourself and the one you love equally. Live, live life to the fullest. Don't ever think of taking your own life.

When I looked at him, he was already asleep in Maine bed. I just couldn't helpbut smile on how he sleeps so peacefully.

Carl is like this frustrated kid in an adult's body. He keeps on struggling anddwelling on the past that he no longer see the beauty of tomorrow. He was just blinded. But aren't I like that too? Struggling and dwelling on the past that I can't seem to forget or get rid off?

I sat beside Carl. It was 5 in the afternoon and the photography club is havinga meeting for the Spectrum exhibit 3 days from now.

Beige: Hi.Carl: Hello. How's your day?Beige: Fine but a bit tiring. You?Carl: Tiring too.Anna: Let's start. Guys, I know we're all busy but the Spectrum exhibit is veryimportant. I need your cooperation. This is a big thing since lots of big peoplewould go to this exhibit and these people can help you launch yourself in the photography field. Okay guys, this is the list of the members per committee. I'd

be the head of everything but still Carl is in charge of the decorations committee, Beige is in charge of the logistics committee and James is in charge of thePR committee. Beige, can you check if our reservation for the venue is already okay?Beige: Sure. I'll go to the venue later to check.Anna: Thank you. So I'll run through the plans for the exhibit.

The meeting went through for about 2 hours and after that I went to the venue tocheck our reservation. Carl offered a ride to the venue but I know he still has a late evening class so I declined. I was walking and waiting for a taxi to gohome when it suddenly rained. I immediately looked in my bag to find an umbrella but I realized I left it in my room.

Beige: Kapag minamalas ka naman oh. Wala ka na ngang payong. Kailangang mo pangtumakbo ng nakaheels.

I was brisk walking, since running was very painful when I heard a car honking it's horn. When I turned around, it was Keith's car.

Keith: Get in. It's raining. You might get sick. We both know you get sick easily.

He said as he lowered the window but I just continued walking and ignored him.

Keith: Please Beige. Get in. I don't want you to get sick.

I still ignored him and started to run. The heel of shoe suddenly broke so I fell and sprained my ankle. It was too painful I couldn't stand up. He suddenly stops the car and got out. Even though it was raining, he went to me and carried meinside his car.

Keith: Don't be stubborn Beige. For some reason I don't know, you're still mad at me but in some way I still consider you as my best friend and I still care foryou deeply.

That was all that he said while we're on the road. I was surprised where we stop

As we went inside, I saw how nice the house was. My anger was turned to awe. Itwas simple yet nice. It was a bachelor's pad and everything was in white with touches of black here in there. Just like how I wish my dream house would look like.

Keith: You liked my house, isn't it? I designed it myself.

I looked away.

Beige: Hmp. Where's Xandra? She lives here right?Keith: No. I'm the only one living here. Xandra lives in a house with her friend

Keisha.Beige: Oh.

He sat me on his bed.

Keith: Wait here.

He got a polo of his and gave it me.

Keith: Better change. Sorry I only have this. Most of my clothes are in the laundry. I don't have time to wash them. I'll just get the ice pack. Don't worry I won't look.

So I did. He went back with a towel and an ice pack.

Keith: Here. Dry your hair with the towel.

I got the towel and started drying my hair. Suddenly, he got down on his knees and started massaging my foot.

Keith: Is it still painful?

I nodded. He massaged it some more. My heart suddenly beats fast. As I look at him, it is as if I just want us to stay like this forever. Just be with him forever. But I can't. It's not possible.

He suddenly twisted my foot a bit too strong.

Beige: Ouch! Gusto mo yata akong lumpohin eh.Keith: No. I don't. There. We'll just put the ice pack and then you'll be okay tomorrow.

He suddenly stands up and sat behind my back.

Keith: Para ka namang bata. Give me the towel.

He got the towel from me and started drying my hair with it.

Beige: I can do this by myself. Magpalit ka na ng damit. Baka ako pa sisihin mokapag nilagnat ka diyan.

But he still continued drying my hair. Then suddenly I felt his lips at the backof my neck. I immediately turned around.

Keith: Tell me you still love me. 'Cause I still love you Beige. My love for younever changed in the past 3 years that we're apart.

He started kissing me and I was surprised that I was kissing him back.

Beige: Keith, no.

I pushed him. I tried to stand up even though it's still hard for me but he suddenly hugged me tight.

Keith: Please Beige, even just for one night.. stay.

He started kissing me as he also started unbuttoning the polo of his that I'm wearing. My mind is saying no you can't do this with him now and that he has girlfriend but my heart is saying the opposite. I still love him. I really do and I miss him so much. I miss the times when we were happy and together.

The next morning..

I woke up with my head resting on Keith's bare chest. I looked at his face and it was so peaceful. I didn't expect it would be nice to watch him sleep. Beige! What are you thinking? This is a mistake. I shouldn't think about how nice he looks while he's sleeping. I should think about what happened last night. I shouldn't let my feelings control me.

I slowly stood up not to wake him up. I realized my ankle was now okay so I immediately got dressed and took the first taxi I saw to go home.

Maine: Where were you last night? I was worried. It was raining so hard.

I went inside our room as Maine opened the door.

Maine: Beige? Are you listening?Beige: Sorry. What were you saying?Maine: I said, where were you last night?Beige: I was in our house. Inabutan ako ng ulan eh kaya doon na lang ako sa bahay namin nagpalipas ng gabi.CHAPTER 15

I was eating lunch with Carl the day after the incident. We decided to have lunch to discuss about the Spectrum exhibit. I decided to make myself busy so that Iwon't think about what happened last night but it just kept coming back in my head.

Carl: Never mind. Are you okay? Are you sick?Beige: Sorry. No. Don't mind me. I'm just tired.

The days passed and the day of the Spectrum exhibit came.

Beige: Hurry up Maine. We'll be late for the opening of the exhibit. Ian's already there waiting for us.

I got dressed and fixed myself a little. I know I'd be very busy tonight.

Maine: You're done?Beige: Yup. Let's go already.

We took a cab to the venue of the exhibit.

Beige: James, are there many people already?James: No. Just some faculty members. It's still 30 minutes before the exhibit so there still not a lot of people.Beige: Whew. I thought we're already late. Maine here can't seem to decide whatto wear.Maine: I know. I know. It's my fault.Beige: I'll just leave you two there. Still need to fix somethings and talk to the staff.

So I did and I was checking if everything was okay and the curtains were in place (the photos were covered with curtains and would be unveiled in about 5 minutes to the public) when something unexpected happened.

Xandra: Beige!

I saw Xandra and Keith walking towards my direction.

Beige: Hello. What are you doing here?Xandra: A high school friend invited me here, Anna Riego. You may know here she's the president of the photography org in your university. You what are you doing here? Someone invited you too?Beige: I'm actually a part of the photography org. I'm somewhat in charge of theexhibit tonight with Anna, James and Carl.

I saw Keith was looking at me so I immediately faced Xandra.

Xandra: Oh. Okay.

Beige: Sorry but I have to leave you for a while. The photos are about to be unveiled so just wait.Xandra: Okay.There are already lots of people. I immediately went to Anna to assure everything before the unveiling.

Beige: Everything's good to go Anna.Anna: Ok. Thanks.

Anna stood on the platform and got everybody's attention.

Anna: Ladies and gentlemen, may I get your attention please. Tonight we welcome

you to the annual Spectrum exhibit. Tonight is a special night because we have lots of wonderful works from the best young photographers of our generation. So with no further a due, in 5, 4, 3, 2.. 1.

The curtains of every photo fell and the photographs were revealed. I checked everything again to make sure if the waiters were doing their job and if the exhibit was going okay. It was going okay so I decided to tour the exhibit myself. Iwas looking through the framed photographs when I particular photographstoppedme. It was a picture of me but I don't remember someone taking it.

Carl: Surprise! You liked it? I made it especially for you.

Carl handed me flowers and kissed my cheek.

Beige: When did you take this picture?Carl: Secret. Hehe. Just tell me that you like it.Beige: I don't like it.

The emotion on his face suddenly changed from happy to sad.

Beige: I love it. It is so nice and beautiful. Thank you.

Carl smiled.

Carl: I'm happy that you like it.Xandra: Wow. Nice picture. That's you Beige right? Oh. Sorry to bo
