Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to First Grade! We are looking forward to an exciting and fun school year! This year your child will have multiple opportunities to read, be read to and write. We are excited to be a part of your child’s learning and looking forward to seeing them grow and succeed!

First grade is an exciting year for your child because they will become our future readers and writers. In reading, they will learn various good reader strategies and build their fluency. They will also read fiction and nonfiction texts to learn more about the characters in books and the world.

Students are expected to read each night independently, to someone else, and be read to. Remember to record all reading in your child’s reading log. The more children read, the better reader they will become! In writing, we will be exploring a variety of genres and practice building our stamina by writing across several pages in those areas. Please encourage your child to write at home about their childhood experiences by keeping a small journal or diary. Children become better writers by writing!

In math, the children will become great mathematicians! The students will work with base ten blocks to create numbers and will learn to count from any given number to 120 as well as count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We will continue to build fluency in addition and subtraction facts up to 20. We will also create and solve story problems. Students will begin to measure, learn to tell time to the hour and half hour and count money.

If you would like to help out with a project, discuss a holiday celebration your family celebrates or you would like to help in any way, we would love to have you! Just send in a note, or call 1 week in advance to schedule a time. For birthdays please only send in individual juices and 1 healthy snack for each child.

We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year. Remember the more the children interact with language at home, the easier it will be for him/her to read and write in the classroom. It is important that teachers and parents work together so that the children can be successful!

¡Bienvenidos al primer grado! ¡Estamos ansiosos de comenzar un nuevo año escolar! Este año, su hijo/a tendrá muchas oportunidades de leer, escribir y escuchar cuentos leidos a voz alta. ¡Estamos emocionados de ser parte del proceso de aprendizaje de su hijo/a y ganas de verlos crecer y tener éxito!

Primer grado es un año muy emocionante para su hijo/a ya que se convertirán en nuestros futuros lectores y escritores. En la lectura, van aprender varias estrategias de ser buen lector y mejorar su fluidez. También van a leer textos de ficción y no ficción para aprender más acerca de los personajes en los libros y el mundo. Se espera que los estudiantes leen cada noche independientemente, a otra persona, y que alguien le lea a ellos. Recuerde grabar todo tipo de lectura en la lista de lectura de su niño. ¡Lo más que leen los niños, mejor lector será! En escritura, se explorará una variedad de géneros y los niños practicarán a escribir más cada vez en varias páginas en estas areas. Por favor, anime a su niño escribir en casa acerca de sus experiencias de infancia en una pequeña libreta o diario. ¡Lo más que escriben, mejores autores serán!

En matemáticas, los niños se convertirán en gran matemáticos. We hope that you are having an enjoyable and relaxing summer and will soon be ready to begin an event-filled school year. We would like to give you the opportunity to prepare for your child’s upcoming First Grade Year at Pine Grove Manor. Below are the school supplies that every first grade class at PGM will be using. Please note that individual teachers may have other supplies that they will need you to purchase.

Your child will need the following items for school. Please make sure your child’s supplies are labeled with his or her name.

• 1- bookbag • 4- glue sticks • 1- pencil box/pouch • 2- boxes of 24 count crayons • 2- pink block erasers • 2- 12 pack of pencils • 4- dry erase markers • 2- plastic pocket folders (They must be the following colors, 1-red and 1-yellow) • 4- marble composition notebooks (no wire-bound notebooks)

out for notes home from the teacher. Here are some of the basic required items that your child will need to bring with them during the first week of school.
