A quick history on how mRNA science works and how it’s used in a vaccine.

What is mRNA?Messenger RNA (mRNA) is a molecule that plays an integral role in human biology. Without mRNA, our bodies couldn’t perform their everyday functions. mRNA’s main job is to instruct our cells how to make proteins.

mRNA as a New Category of MedicineUsing mRNA as a medicine is built on the foundation that our bodies can create their own defense mechanism. COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are designed to deliver the instructions our bodies need to create the proteins that help activate the immune response against the virus.

How So Fast?Moderna has been pioneering mRNA science for more than 10 years. By accelerating the review of data and a large interest for volunteer enrollment, we were able to condense our COVID-19 vaccine development timeline. We did this with the help of regulatory bodies, such as the FDA and Health Canada, all while maintaining study design standards and accuracy. Our mRNA platform has given us the ability to develop an efficient response that keeps our patients’ safety top of mind.

Safety FirstThe benefits of the COVID-19 vaccines authorized in Canada continue to outweigh the risks. To date, over 138 million doses of SPIKEVAX have been administered in the U.S. and over 7.4 million in Canada. SPIKEVAX went through rigorous testing, with the help of 30,000 volunteers, to get authorization under Interim Order from Health Canada. Moderna continues to review all safety and efficacy data as it becomes available.

COVID-19 Vaccine’s Journey in the Body The journey begins once the COVID-19 vaccine is administered in the upper arm and starts delivering mRNA to our muscle cells. These cells will then use the blueprint provided by the mRNA that teaches our immune system to recognize and be ready to produce antibodies against COVID-19. Soon after administration, the mRNA will have broken down within our body. After the mRNA leaves our system, it will have taught our body how to properly defend itself against COVID-19.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

SPIKEVAX™ (elasomeran mRNA vaccine) is a vaccine used to prevent the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It can be given to individuals aged 12 years and older. As with any vaccine, SPIKEVAX may not fully protect all those who recieve it. Even after you have had both doses of the vaccine, continue to follow reccommendations of local public health officials to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Individuals may not be optimally protected until after recieving the second dose of the vaccine.

The most common or very common side effects of SPIKEVAX are pain at the Injection site, tiredness, headache, muscle ache and stiffness, chills, fever, swelling or redness at the injection site, nausea and/or vomiting and enlarged lymph nodes. Allergic reactions may also occur.

Vaccination may not be suitable for everyone, so ask your healthcare professional if SPIKEVAX is right for you. Full product information can be found on https://www.modernacovid19global.com/ca/. To report an adverse event, please call 1-866-MODERNA(1-866-663-3762).
