HowanMRIscanworksDuringamagneticresonanceimaging(MRI)scan,youlieinastrongmagneticfieldandradiofrequencywavesaredirectedatyourbody.Thisproducesdetailedimagesoftheinsideofyourbody.
Mostofthehumanbodyismadeupofwatermolecules,whichconsistofhydrogenandoxygenatoms.Atthecentreofeachhydrogenatomthereisanevensmallerparticlecalledaproton.Protonsareliketinymagnetsandareverysensitivetomagneticfields.
Whenyoulieunderthepowerfulscannermagnets,theprotonsinyourbodylineupinthesamedirection,inthesamewaythatamagnetcanpulltheneedleofacompass.
Shortburstsofradiowavesarethensenttocertainareasofthebody,knockingtheprotonsoutofalignment.Whentheradiowavesareturnedoff,theprotonsrealignandindoingsosendoutradiosignals,whicharepickedupbyreceivers.
Thesesignalsprovideinformationabouttheexactlocationoftheprotonsinthebody.Theyalsohelptodistinguishbetweenthevarioustypesoftissueinthebody,becausetheprotonsindifferenttypesoftissuerealignatdifferentspeedsandproducedistinctsignals.
Inthesamewaythatmillionsofpixelsonacomputerscreencancreatecomplexpictures,thesignalsfromthemillionsofprotonsinthebodyarecombinedtocreateadetailedimageoftheinsideofthebody.
