The Dental profession is increasingly being drawn into a role of diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. With the growing number of “Dental Sleep Medicine” courses on offer, there is a need to evaluate which of these gives the widest and most clinically orientated educational program. Furthermore, TMJ disorder remains a subject of great confusion among dentists, with the newly qualified practitioners having less knowledge of this subject than even their basic orthodontic skills.

The inaugural TMJ Sleep Dentistry Symposium by MRC will be the first to put the complete picture together.

From treating a clicking joint, to evaluating and treating sleep disorders in adults and children, this symposium will cover diagnostic and treatment procedures for TMJ disorder and sleep disorders as well as show you how to seamlessly integrate it all with Myofunctional Orthodontic procedures.

Why? Because sleep disorders, TMJ disorders and malocclusion are integrated and, in most patients, require seamless diagnosis and treatment procedures to prevent inadequate and incomplete outcomes.

This symposium will define a new syndrome known as TMJBDS – Teeth Muscles Jaw Breathing Disordered Sleep Syndrome.

LECTURERS

Vanee Ganesaratnam - B Oral H (Dent Ther), O.M. (Orofacial Myologist) Ms. Vanee Ganesaratnam is a foundation member of the Myobrace Pre-Orthodontic Center®, and has worked alongside Dr. Chris Farrell (MRC CEO and Founder) since 2005 to develop its philosophy and novel approach to early Myofunctional Orthodontic treatment.

Vanee’s myofunctional education began in the USA, where her eyes were opened to the benefits and potential of myofunctional therapy. Ms. Ganesaratnam gained her qualifications as an orofacial myologist in 2009, which was approved by the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). She has since completed myofunctional training in a number

of other countries worldwide.

Vanee learned how simple exercises for the orofacial muscles produced significant improvements in not only a child’s malocclusion, but also facial development and overall health. She has now dedicated her efforts to training other professionals around the world in this field, based on her experiences from the Myobrace Pre-Orthodontic Center®. Vanee is also currently completing the prestigious Sydney University Masters in Sleep Medicine program, and has been pivotal in bridging the gap between myofunctional sciences and orthodontic, TMD and sleep treatment.

Dr. Chris Farrell - MRC Founder & CEO, BDS Dr. Farrell founded Myofunctional Research Co. (MRC) in 1989 to develop myofunctional appliances that would prove effective in early orthodontic treatment.

Through clinical experience, Dr. Farrell took an interest in TMJ disorder and after further research, discovered the aetiology of malocclusion, airway dysfunction and TMJ disorder was myofunctional, which contradicted the established views of his profession.

As a result, he founded MRC with the intent to develop Myofunctional Orthodontic treatment systems targeted at treating mouth breathing as a primary cause of malocclusion as well as myofunctional habits.

In more recent years, Dr. Farrell’s focus has widened to include the emerging field of Sleep Dentistry and has developed simpler treatment techniques for sleep disorders and TMJ disorder with the Myosa® system.

Dr. Rohan Wijey - Clinical Director, B Oral H (Dent Sci), Grad. Dip. Dent., O.M.Dr. Rohan Wijey is the Clinical Director and Senior Lecturer of Myofunctional Research Co. (MRC) and CEO of the Myobrace Pre-Orthodontic Centers®.

His Myofunctional Orthodontic journey began with MRC in 2007 under Dr. Chris Farrell’s tutelage, and he has since lectured across five continents and has had numerous articles published in orthodontic and paediatric journals around the world.

During his time at MRC, Dr. Wijey has seen

the worldwide acceptance of Myofunctional Orthodontics grow rapidly, to the point where the Myobrace® and Trainer appliance systems are now some of the most widely used early intervention orthodontic treatments in the world.

Despite his heavy lecturing schedule, he remains very much involved in clinical practice, dividing his time between Myobrace® and Myosa® Centers owned and operated by MRC in Australia.

Dr. Derek Mahony - BDS, MScOrth, DOrthRCS, MDOrthRCPS, MOrthRCS, FRCD, MOrth RCS, FICD, IBO, FACD, FICCDE, FADFEDr. Derek Mahony is a graduate of the University of Sydney, Faculty of Dentistry, and an Alumnus of the University of London, Masters Program in Orthodontics. He is also a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.

Dr. Mahony has been actively involved in research that links constricted maxillary arch forms to nasal breathing problems, adverse facial growth and systemic health problems such as nocturnal enuresis. He has presented over 400 lectures on orthodontic topics, in more

than 30 countries. As a practicing clinician, his research interests are in the aetiology of malocclusion and guidance of facial growth.

He is also a member of the editorial board of five international dental journals, and a visiting lecturer at the City of London Dental School. Dr. Mahony practices the full remit of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, including functional appliances, treatment of TMD and the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive airway problems such as snoring and sleep apnoea.

Dr. David McIntosh - MBBS FRACS PhD Dr. David McIntosh is an adjunct Associate Professor of ENT in Queensland. He specialises in paediatric ENT, nose and sinus disease, and snoring and sleep apnoea.

He is the only ENT surgeon working north of Brisbane that holds a PhD, paediatric subspecialty qualifications, and has been a recipient of a NHMRC scholarship.

From a surgical point of view, he is one of the most experienced ENT surgeons in Australia in terms of day stay tonsillectomy, an avid proponent of adenoidectomy under vision, an advocate for the use of grommets suitable for swimming (so that in most cases plugs and wraps are not required), synthetic grafts for ear drum perforations for children as young as 3 years old, as well as advanced and modern nasal/sinus surgery techniques (as opposed to traditional surgery).

Dr. Steven Lin - BbiomedSc, BDentDr. Steven Lin is a board accredited dentist trained at the University of Sydney; with a background in biomedical science, nutrition and fitness serving as a platform to help people to understand the relationship between their mouth, how to eat healthy and their lives.

As a clinical dentist, Dr. Lin became increasingly troubled at the levels of tooth decay in developing children's mouths across all parts of society and the lifelong consequences that would follow as a result. Today, Dr. Lin focuses

on helping his patients prevent dental disease and avoid treatment. He looks for the root cause of disease, crediting the mouth-body connection as the best way to monitor our health and strongly believes the oral-systemic link means our mouths affect our body and our bodies affect our mouths.

Dr. Lin’s commitment to delivering revolutionary health messages that drive real change has included lectures with TEDx Talks and a #1 Amazon International Best Selling book outlining the nutritional basis of dental disease.
