Welcome to Spring everybody, i believe it’s finally here. rain, mud, dust and warm temps, we’ve had a little bit of everything so far, it seems like spring to me. the best part is, we’re racing every weekend and it’s not 30 degrees outside.

the racing action has been superb so far this season. the expert gates have been full and i’ve seen some of the best b class racing that i’ve seen in years. that’s good news for the future of our sport, lot’s of participation and lot’s of great competition.

there are many choices for todays racer. no matter what your discipline, our region is chocked full of great series that you can compete in. the northeast, especially PA, MD and the surrounding areas has always been a hotbed of racing activity and has been well known for producing some of the best talent out there.

Stay tuned to the pages of MrA each and every month to keep up to date on upcoming events, race results and coverages and where to get all the stuff you need to have a successful racing season. We strive to bring you the best information in the area.

this year all District 6 MX card holders in addition to all MDrA members will receive a copy of MrA in the mail each month. Please take advantage of this, that’s a lot of great information at your fingertips and

it’s also a great way to “reach the racers” if you have products or services they need to know about.

new to MrA this issue is a classified marketplace. Where else can you directly reach all of the racers from our region of the country? if you have bikes, parts, gear or anything moto that you desire to sell, why not put it where the racers are? the prices are resonable and the exposure is great. email us or give us a call with your classified needs.

Also, please remember to check out our photo site each week as well. We can only fit so many pictures in the paper, but the web is unlimited. Log on every Monday evening to catch all the great racing action from the weekend. You can also purchase photos as well. MrA photos are great for gifts and awards and they’re great for thanking or attracting new sponsors.

As always i would like to thank everyone for their support. Without all of you there would be no need for what we do. thanks for reading and if you could, thank an advertiser the next time you see them. they’re the ones that really make it happen.

Until next time.Jim Bull, MRA

timmy Hunter and the whole Hunter family are great examples of our fine sport. When searching for a Hotshot this month (and there are so many qualified) i was stumbling thru the pits at the Flying Dutchmen at round # 2 of the PA State HS Series thinking “who do i want to feature this month” and there he was. “Hi Jim” said # 45 timmy Hunter and i instantly had my answer. now don’t confuse this # 45 with the # 45 of tim’s father chris, who is a Senior A class racer, or the # 45 of Matt his older brother, who is an open A class racer. All of which ride KtM’s so they are easy to tell apart. i bet Mrs. Hunter, who by the way is always by her guy’s side at the track, probably drives an orange car with the # 45 on it somewhere. no, all jokes aside this whole family is a true example of what our sport is and should be. So much so that the whole family won the award for “Sportsman of the Year” at last years PA State Harescramble banquet.

now on to timmy. i first met tim at a harescramble banquet i believe two years ago. He came up to me and asked me to take a picture of him the next day at the race. He would be the guy on the # 45 KtM wearing a tie. that was the day i learned that there were several # 45 KtM’s and if it wasn’t for the tie, i never would have known him. timmy did well that day, i don’t remember his exact finish, but i know it was good enough for me to want to keep my eye on him. that race started the season ponts for the Dutchmen and until the end of the year timmy had managed to ride away on his # 45 orange KtM with a track championship at the Dutchmen, a second place finish in the district and a fourth overall in the PA State Series.

that brings us to 2006. timmy still rides that # 45 KtM but i haven’t seen the tie for a while. Maybe his mom got tired of washing the mud out of them. Anyhow, to date this year, timmy has two wins under his belt and a second place finish with the second place coming at round #1 of the PA States to the top guy from the eceA. it sounds like tim may well be on his way to reaching his goal for this year.

i would like to thank the whole Hunter family for being a great example of what our sport should be, and i would like to wish them all the best in their racing endeavors. i recommend keeping an eye or three on the # 45 KtM’s this year and watch out next month, who knows you just might end up being the next MrA Hotshot.

OMS-1 is a independent shop who have a racing support program in order to cut down the cost of racing for local racers …..

this is 2 of our best up and coming quad riders, Andy Zimmerman, 19, and Drew gilbert, 16…

how long have you been riding?Andy: 3 years riding and 1 year

racing. Drew: 6 years riding 1 year racing.

Who is favorite rider and how did you get started?

Andy: My favorite pro is travis Spader. Frenchie helped me with my 440 eX senior project and inspired me to go racing…. My hero is a local D6 rider tony Lucarelli.

Drew: Joe byrd for the pro class and Andy was

What was your first ride and what are you racing today?

Andy: i had a blaster, a 400 eX with a 440cc kit. i restored it as my senior project. now i race a blacked-out YFZ 450. Look for the oMS-1 #333

Drew: my first bike was a KX 80 then a tricked out blaster (i must have $25,000 in it on parts alone). i still have it. i’ll sell it when i retire and move to the bahamas with the money or something... My new trX 450r is a lot faster and more fun to race!

Where is your favorite place to ride

or race?Drew: irish Valley for practice, great

variety and it never gets boring, and

Atco raceway for racing, it’s cool to race under the lights and lots of lines to pass.

Andy: Same

Were do you guys live?Andy: Myerstown, 10 miles from

Lebanon, PADrew: We live about 10 minutes from

each other so we train together a lot.

Who is the faster of the two?Andy: Me, i’ll never let him beat me!Drew: He’s gay! i just miss the

monster power of my blaster! Seriously, i’m working on catching up to him really

soon. i just a little more experience on my new quad it’s only my 5th race on it this year.

What are your goals for the season?

Andy: to turn A by the end of the season, qualify for the nationals i attend, and to make sure Drew doesn’t beat me!

Drew: race as much as possible to build up experience and to do well in track points.

Both: to beat our friend Dunkle for the remainder of the season

What’s your favorite thing to do when you don’t race?

Andy: i guess ride and just hang out with friends

Drew: Pretty much the same, i like working out. racing take a lot of my time!

Whats the stupidest thing you have done lately?

Andy: i broke my hand punching my quad because i was mad… i’m in a cast for 2 more weeks! Also i crashed at about 70 mph getting pulled downhill by a bicycle while i was wearing rollerblades… my eyes were watering i never saw the turn coming!

Drew: Last year we ganged up in a car and paintballed the neighborhood

then got chased by the entire county police squad and pulled over. they made us wash the carnage we left behind. i was reloading and Andy was the sniper. not good. our parents decided that racing is not that bad after all…i’m usually a good kid when Andy is not around!

What’s the smartest thing you’ve done lately?

Andy: let me think… i guess getting a decent job and pay my way to the races.

Drew: i just saved a bunch of money on car insurance by switching to geico and i was picked student of the month. i am studying machine technology.

Anybody you would like to thank?Andy: off road Motorsports, regina

chain, burgard, gibson, PowerMadd, ASV, Scott, tekbolt, FLY, Maxima, Pro taper and my parents and friends.

Drew: off road Motorsports, Fly, Maxima, Scott, Four, o’neal, burgard, and of course my family and friends.

Thanks and good luck this season!

the new District 6 ultimate MX Series made its 2006 debut at the Atco MX Park in Atco, nJ on a rainy Saturday afternoon in late March. the ultimate MX Series was born in 2005 and included tracks in three different AMA districts. the series was intertangled with last years D6 championship Points series. it was a great series with great sponsors but it seemed to be to “spread out” geographically and it lacked in rider participation.

For 2006 the promoters of AMA District 6 have shortened the series and limited it to D6 tracks only. this allows competitors to have one great racing series to follow while keeping it more affordable as far as time and money are concerned. the series

still has the same great sponsors in MSr / Answer and Pro taper and Manufacturers contingencies are offered at many rounds. rounds not offering contingency are double points earning rounds for all racers carrying a District 6 membership card. each race facility in District 6 has been awarded two rounds and racers must compete at least once at each facility to be eligible for year end awards.

the 2006 kickoff brought a record crowd to Atco MX Park with close to 440 racers coming out on a damp and dreary day. the expert classes were loaded with the best racers District 6 has to offer. Phil nicoletti, barry carsten, team PDL, team rrP and many more including local Pro racer Jason Lawrence were on hand. the amateur and mini gates were full and there were a large number of AtV participants for round # 1 of the D6 AtV championship Points Series.

near the end of the first set of motos the skies opened up and the rain began to fall. by the time the first moto of the 250 A division took the gate we were experiencing a near monsoon and the fine folks from Atco decided it was time to call it a day. Visibility was near zero and the track was getting very slick. they finished out the first motos and scored it accordingly, manufacturer’s money was still honored and everyone headed home to higher ground.

For 2006 the motocross promoters of District 6 have formed a motocross committee to better serve the motocross racers of their district. the new 18 round ultimate MX Series has been born for motorcycles and a 14 round AtV MX Series has been formed for the quad racers of the district. their goal is to provide a better racing environment with better year end awards and racer satisfaction. Stay tuned to the D6 website at amadistrict6.com and be sure to check out wet event photos at mcracingaction.com.

the year of the track, thanks in part to Kinsley construction from York, PA. Sunday March 26, 2006 took us to the Happy ramblers Motorcycle club and another brand new race track built by the team at Kinsley construction.

i’ve seen a lot of changes over the years at Happy ramblers, and not just since we’ve been doing MrA. Happy was one of tracks i frequented way back in the day when there were still dinosaurs and they let guys like me race motocross. there wasn’t even a starting gate the first year i raced there, my how things change. the club members at Happy have been making a consistent effort year after year to improve their facility and what a shot in the arm this off season brought to their facility located between Hanover and gettysburg on PA route 116.

there is a new starting gate location, there is new fencing, and there are multiple spectator towers and bleachers for seating. there are new rhythm sections and jumps, the track is longer and i believe competitive but safer. there is a new uphill section and improved parking area, and there is every other reason in the world why you need to check out this new facility if you haven’t already done so.

Happy’s opener came under clear skies and decent temperatures. the racing up to this point had been quite brutal in the region which left this day even more desirable. the crowd was good and the racing was intense. everyone i spoke with seemed to like the new track design after riding it and said that they would be back for more at Happy this year.

in the expert divisions the battle

of the day came between chad Wages and Stephen Stella. the two would swap positions and plastic all day long with Stella coming out on top in the 125 A class. in 250 A racing action, West Shore Suzuki’s Willy toth would get in the mix and come out victorious. Jon boser was back in action in the Vet divisions winning 25 + and 30 + A.

in novice action two gates were needed in the ever popular 125 c division. A great battle ensued in group one with ian Heller sweeping the class over Devin Manahan, these two guys went at it tooth and nail on the new Happy course. in group two carter Luck took the overall win moving up from the mini divisions from last year.

ShIPPenSBURg, PA. APRIL 2, 2006by Len & ben breech

Shippensburg Speedway opened the District 6 & 7 short track season on a surprisingly beautiful warm and sunny April afternoon. John Long was the only rider to take two class wins on different machines in the 125 and 250 b classes. cassidy Heiser also took a pair of wins on the same machine; his Action Motorsports sponsored Honda in the 85 (12-15) and Youth Sportsman. in the 250 final, Mitch Harvat took the lead from Long, James Wiggins and brett Pugh. As they entered the third turn on the second lap Long slipped under for the lead. For several laps, Pugh and then tristan Avery pressured Harvat for second, both getting by off two on the sixth lap. on the final lap, Jesse Long took over fifth spot.

in the 125, Long took the lead right away from Avery, with Dalton Winkler, Jesse Long and Jacob Shoemaker gradually following back. While Avery kept on Long’s rear the entire distance, Jesse took over a distant third on lap four.

the majority of the almost 200 riders signing up seemed to be in the A classes. in the Sportsman and open Modified frame A, each ran four heats, with the winner going to the final and the rest going to two semis to determine the finalists. Quite often, one rider will emerge with at least two wins out of the three major finals; open Modified frame A, open Stock frame A, and Sportsman. Factory Suzuki rider, Jake Johnson, looked like the rider to beat as he won the open Stock-framed A. He used his team Suzuki/Parts unlimited Flat track practice bike to jump into the lead over roy Miller, Shawn baer, brandon robinson and Joey Parks. Johnson started to pull away, while Miller, baer and robinson ran nose to tail the entire distance.

the basic ‘cast of characters’ returned for the Sportsman final.

this time baer grabbed the lead from robinson, Johnson, brian Phillips and chris Klinefelter. baer kept his Patriot H-D/Lucas oil/Lancaster H-D sponsored Honda in front, while Johnson and Phillips battled with Phillips bumping Johnson off the groove in turn one. With Johnson out, the order

stayed the same, although Phillips did get closer to robinson in the late laps.

Phillips was first out of two in the open Modified frame A over Klinefelter, baer and Shawn’s little brother, evan. but coming out of four, Phillips got slightly out of shape, letting Klinefelter past. With Phillips bearing down, he and Klinefelter pulled several lengths on Shawn while evan had Johnson breathing on his neck. Phillips put his Schaeffer’s H-D rotax back in the lead into turn one on the fifth lap. in the late laps, Johnson tried an outside line pass but on the final turn he drifted high, letting tim eades past for fifth.

Vince bower took the 30+ lead over roy Miller, Dallas baer, rick reynolds and rich Mellinger. but on the second lap, he succumbed to Miller’s pressure, and started dropping back. baer stayed close to Miller till the end. in the 40 +, Mark Stambaugh pulled out in front and kept his Yamaha tt in front of Dave Smith, Jim chapman and Mike Keane. r. J. Hart won the 750 while Shayna texter took the 250 A.

Kyle Mcgrane topped tristan Avery for the

50 oil injected win, while cameron Smith took the 50cc 4 Stroke. Devin owens won the 50 (4-6), with ryan Varnes getting by Dustin Healey for the 50

(7-8) win. Joey Schmidt battled his buddy Jeremiah Snow for the 65 win. With last year’s dominate rider, cassidy Heiser, moving up to the 85(12-15) class, tyler Stacey had no problem winning the 85 (7-11). Heiser easily topped the 85 (12-15) and the Youth Sportsman, open to all 85 riders.

Jarrett rhodes won the open Stock framed b, with casey Mccammon winning the open Modified b final. ryan connelly took his first win in the 100 final.

round # 2 of the bP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series found itself at the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle club in early April under fair skies and yes you guessed it, just a little of that famous Dutchmen mud. the rains had fallen hard again in the days prior to the event but all in all the entire course was much better than what i had expected.

round # 2 brought another huge turnout to the Dutchmen with 485 riders showing up for the event, with 170 being quads alone. they stretched it seemed like for miles while waiting for staging. this backed up i believe a record turnout for the State Series where round # 1 saw 496 riders show up, again at the Flying Dutchmen.

in youth racing action, cody Mummert was once again the rider to beat. cody chased Lancaster HD’s cory texter for most of the race after texter went off in the stage prior to his. i believe on lap three Mummert was able to make the pass in the woods section and was able to race on to the checkers. in the youth AtV classes, which now runs separate from the bikes there was a three way race going on for the overall between Joe bromley, Kenton Heinbaugh and series newcomer brandon Hess. Hess just started competing in the PA Series late last fall. today would be brandons day racing to the overall and the 90cc Production win.

in the motorcycle race, Jed Haines would run in the front of the pack until the last lap when he had

some trouble and ended up with a hole in his radiator. Haines would hold on for second behind race winner ben bouwens. in the open c class we saw gncc AtV racer chris borich show up on a Honda crF250 and win the race. Word around the pits was that two weeks prior to the race was borichs first ride ever on a motorcycle. Just moments later, after a two hour ride on the bike, borich jumped on his quad and led the race from start to finish against local mx pro Pat brown.

the Pa State Harescramble Series is i believe in its fifth season here in AMA District 6. the 12 race series is backed by industry giant MSr and Answer racing along with many other local companies. the action is always good and the year end awards are second to none. Stay posted in MrA for series updates, results and photos and make sure you get signed up for the MSr contingency program before its too late. the rewards are great so give bromleys Mc a call at 215-357-1534 and ask them how you can be a part of it all.

Action Motorsports or AMS as it may better be known at the track is located in York, PA right along route 30 across from caterpillar tractor. AMS opened for business in 1994 and has been providing their customers and race team members with excellent customer service ever since. their roots go way beyond that with many decades of motorcycle experience within their walls. Mike bear a racer himself is the general manager at AMS and his family has owned motorcycle dealerships since the day he was born. Actions service manager, John Yurejefcic who has many years of race experience worked at the same location for previous owners thru the 1970’s. John then went on to be a national Service Manager with Yamaha, and has returned to partner with the bear family since Action opened their doors in the mid 1990’s. Actions Parts Manager, Amy Paules also has deep roots with the company as her family owned the dealership during the 1980’s and Amy has stayed on with Action since the beginning to help contribute to their success.

Late last year, tragedy struck the folks at Action Motorsports. in the early AM hours on a Saturday morning an electrical fire started in the roof of their main showroom and it destroyed the building and a good majority of their inventory. it was a setback indeed, but not enough to keep them down. they immediately went to work and within a few short weeks they were open for business. they set up shop in a satellite store in a building they had used for mainly storage. to the best of my knowledge none of their customers went without their rides and Action was able to function if only on a limited basis.

Just a few short months later they are still working out of that same small building but the attitudes and determination has brought them right back to where they were before the fire. Action currently has over 500 units in stock and available for purchase and they have a fully stocked parts and accessories department. their service department continues to function and if no one would tell you, you would probably never know there was a fire.

the best part about the whole experience is their decision to

rebuild. by the end of this year AMS is anticipating their brand new 22,000 square foot dealership to be open for business at their current location. this will mean more inventories and a better facility to serve you better. if you’re already an Action customer you know what i mean. if not, it may be a good time to give them a call.

Do they cater to racers you ask? Action is into racing, they currently have 24 members on their motocross team of which close to half are attempting to qualify for the Amateur nationals at Loretta Lynns. they also run a very successful flat track team out of the dealership and they are always looking for new talent to add to their ranks. Mike bear asked that we thank all of their loyal customers, race team members and sponsors that make what they do possible.

if you would like to learn more about this great dealership, you can check them out on the web at www.actionmotorsportsyork.com or give them a call at (717) 757-2688.

name: Kameron PageAge: 11 yearsexperience: racing 5 yearshometown: Denver, PARacing #: 83Classes: 65 (10-11) 85 (7-11)Rides: KtM 65SX Yamaha YZ85Sponsors: Yamaha Motor corp, Action Motorsports, Matto cycle, PDL racing, Pr2 Motors, tbt / Keeney Motosports, Motographx, Kenda tires, FMF, 909, e3 Apparel, Liquid Performance, Scott, tri Star.Special Thanks: to Jeff Yentzer for his Motocross Schools and PDL racing for their support.

Local mini racer Kameron Page has been winning races for a long time now. Kameron has been the young man to beat both locally and nationally the last couple of seasons with this year being no exception. Kameron’s best finish to date nationally was a sixth place on his 65cc machine a few years ago. not to shabby if you ask me.

Kameron got his start 5 years ago on a Yamaha PW 50. i asked him if he remembers that race and all he knows is that it was at Sleepy Hollow and he doesn’t even think he finished that day. My, how things have changed.

Kameron is a four time Loretta Lynn’s competitor, he has been a top 10 olympian

at the Mini o’s and you can usually find him atop a podium each and every weekend on the local circuit. Kameron’s goal is a top three finish this year at the nationals.

Kameron has raced all over the country and on many different machines in his young lifetime. Kameron has gone back to his roots and once again he finds himself on a Yamaha. the same brand that helped him launch his career. this time things are a little different though. this time Kameron has a factory support ride for team Yamaha out of Action Motorsports. this year Kameron has a chance, at a very young age to prove he’s the real deal. this year if Kameron continues to ride like he currently is, and if he can put up a solid finish at the nationals, there’s a good chance that he’ll land a factory Yamaha ride for 2007. Mike bear is working with Mike guerra, Yamaha’s race team Manager to help secure that ride for Kameron.

Kameron is also competing his last year on the 65cc machine. bud Matto of Matto cycles in Pottsville, PA is helping with that ride. Yamaha encouraged the relationship and they hope that he succeeds to help boost his confidence and to farther his riding skills.

We wish Kameron and the whole AMS race team the best in their 2006 racing season.

Watch for that familiar AMS front fender sticker to be atop the results list many times this year and watch for the AMS race team at a track near you.

Happy birthday MDrA! the Mason Dixon riding Association just celebrated its first birthday. they opened their second season of racing on April 2, 2006 at the Sleepy Hollow MX Park. the MDrA was born in 2005 by a group of racers / race promoters for the purpose of giving the racers a competitive environment to race in while providing great awards and year end payouts. they had a successful inaugural season in 05 averaging close to 500 racers per event with year end awards totaling close to

$ 20, 000.00 in cash and contingencies. i believe the MDrA race Series is in for

a whale of a year judging from the turn out of their first event in 2006. the MDrA came to Sleepy Hollow for the first time ever and set not only a record for attendance for their series but Sleepy Hollow had their biggest day ever at the big track entering over 660 riders for the day. Parking was tight and the day was long but that’s to be expected with a turn out like that.

on the bright side, the day went off without a hitch, the gates were full making for some great racing action and over $4000.00 was paid out to the expert divisions with close to $3400.00 of that going to bike racers alone thanks to the great payout structure that the MDrA offers at all of their events.

2006 promises to be even bigger than last year with a 40% increase in year end payouts across the board. MSr, Answer and Pro taper have stepped up and became

major sponsors of this years series offering contingencies for all riders that wear MSr and Answer gear (you must register for this program, please contact the MDrA for more details), and the top three racers in 22 different classes will earn FRee MSr / Answer gear at the year end awards banquet in october.

racing you ask? Yes, that was good too. b & b Yamaha of Lancaster, PA sponsored the event with MSr Sponsored ty Wallace winning three expert classes on the day.

Wallace took the checkers in 25+ A, 30+ A and 250A with his MSr teammate Jeremy cook taking the win in the 125 expert division. the amateur divisions were hot as well with

D-6 pilot Dennis Johns and MDrA ace gary radford mixing it up all afternoon. Johns edged out the win in the 125 b division with radford going on to win 250 b.

in the mini ranks Andrew Johns showed everyone that his older brother wasn’t

the only family member that carried a lot of speed. Johns was launching the bonsai on his 85 class machine grabbing the win in

Supermini while finishing a strong second behind brandon Seibold in the 85cc (12-15) A division. Derek Miller took the win in the 85cc (7-11) c class and Derek Miller took a second in the 85cc (12-15) b class (no relation) but both ride Suzuki’s. And in the

Women’s division nicki Lingle riding for race sponsor b & b Yamaha took the win while wearing Answer apparel.

by Matt WozneyAs you are reading this article, you would

expect to see what racers did well on the day and all the factual things that go along with it. but today’s race was more than who won what class and how the race day went. it was all about the support of fallen top local racer named Mark garvey, who sustained spinal injuries at the Lake Whitney Spring national in early March.

now this year has been a rough start for our sport. From that day we saw that frightening endo of Privateer James Marshall seen across the country from the San Diego SX in February to Honda factory rider ernesto Fonseca also suffering from similar injuries sustained in a practice crash, the list of racers getting spinal injuries is way more noticed than ever before. it just comes to show you how much this sport has turned up the notch in racing in general. but at the same time, it shows how close everyone is in the motocross community and how willing they are to help out their fellow competitors in their time of desperate need. it also comes to show how tight we all are like a family, but much bigger. today’s intermission between the first and second motos at blue Diamond proved to be a prime example of this “family” we are all a part of.

before intermission, Alan Decarlo and the hard working crew at blue Diamond

set up a large tent near the tower to display the impressive line of accessories and memorabilia that were part of a huge silent auction throughout the day. Such

items included autographed pro jerseys that included ricky carmichael, James Stewart, thomas Hahn, and much more. there was also a Yamaha ttr-50e, which was displayed in front of the tower that was being raffled off and a winner would be drawn at intermission. by intermission, every single raffle ticket was purchased (2000 total) and all proceeds went to Mark. the winner of the ttr graciously donated the bike back to Mark and was later auctioned off to raise more money for the injured rider.

right after the bike raffle, announcer Jake ostrom had his mic in one hand and a “bleeping” nextel in the other. on the other end was Mark garvey. With his dad and mom showing true emotion and love for their son, Mark thanked everyone for being there and showing overwhelming support of him. As family, friends, and other racers surrounded the voice coming out of that nextel, it just goes to show how much of a family we all really are in this sport we all love.

now back to that dirt bike racing stuff…..today’s racing was just as awesome

as the heart felt intermission everyone experienced today. blue Diamond held their second race of 2006 under perfect conditions with a new first turn, which was a

sharp, hairpin corner extending after the original sweeping left turn which was the first turn at blue Diamond since its existence. the racers also experienced a new timing section before the huge step up jump that blue Diamond is known for. it featured a series of four doubles leading up to a small tabletop, which was the original landing to the huge plateau jump that was originally there. Lots of racers enjoyed that section throughout the day.

Since today was a District 7 gold Series race, with a nice size purse for the A classes, there were lots of top racers making their appearance

on this revamped blue Diamond track. in the A classes, the roster of racers included familiar names like nicoletti, carsten, evennou, Duffy, Wages, Wilcom, Welch, and many others.

in the 125 A class, American Honda’s Phil nicoletti kept his momentum in his first month in the A class with a 1-1 dominating sweep. His starts were flawless and at times when he was in the midst of the top five, nicoletti tore it up big time and made his passes when he needed to. but of course, it wasn’t easy with all the big names he had to make passes by. nick evennou, riding a Yamaha today, took the second overall spot with a solid 2-2 score. evennou, like nicoletti, had great starts all day but was sick in the beginning of the day. then, he dislocated his shoulder in the middle of the day in a corner in the first 250 A moto. He was sore and had to deal with some pain for the rest of the day. He wasn’t 100%, but he gave it 110% out there on the track. unfortunately it wasn’t enough to

beat the super fast nicoletti. rounding out the top three was bromley Suzuki’s notable rider barry carsten with a 4-3 finish.

the 250 A class proved to be a different story as nicoletti had many problems during both motos, includeding a huge get off on the second double in the new timing section in the first moto. carsten, with good starts and smart racing skills, proved to be the key to the win with a 2-1 finish. Like nicoletti, Honda rider Zach Miller is in his first full year in the A class and he took a huge holeshot in the first moto and went away with a big moto win. He would finish third in the second moto, which would get him second overall on the day. Suzuki rider gregg Duffy, also another A class rookie, rode very fast and finished up with 3-2 finish, good enough for third overall.

in the mini classes, Yamaha rider tony Archer and Kawasaki rider Michael Anderson were the big duel of the day swapping moto wins in 85cc (12-13) and Supermini (12-15)

classes. Archer ended up taking home two overall wins in those classes with Anderson on his tail most of the time. in the 85cc (7-11) class, Suzuki pilot cody Meekins is showing lots of speed so far this year and he snagged a consistent 2-2 finish today. the Junior Mini class, which featured the same racers as the (7-11) class, was swept by greg Sidebothom on his Suzuki. He is another rider stepping up to another level this year in the (7-11) class. in the 65cc (7-9) class, no one can stop KtM rider robert Allen at blue Diamond. His starts are so amazing, he even has A riders stunned. His out of this world starts and his quick riding proved to be a 1-1 sweep the 65cc (7-9) class.

it is never a dull moment at blue Diamond. the outstanding racing. the new exciting track changes. the overwhelming support for a top local racer. it doesn’t get any better than this.

caveat emptor, sounds like a villain in a John Landis space epic, actually its latin for “buyer beware” something every potential buyer of a used dirt bike should have printed on their wallets.

i can’t count the number of bikes and AtV’s that have come into the shop for

repairs that were a recently purchased used machine. A few look like they should have been sound purchases but the rest had obvious red flags that at the very least should have been used as bargaining tools.

When you go to look at a used

machine first impressions are important but you need to go further. the first thing i would do is pull the seat and check the air filter, is it filthy dirty? is it bone dry? or is it clean and oiled.

if the filter maintenance looks questionable you can be sure you will

experience costly engine repairs very shortly. either walk away or negotiate the price down based on the cost of a rebuild.

check wheel bearings for play, loose bearings $20. worn hub $200. check the rear suspension by bouncing hard on the seat, does it move freely through its travel or does it go up solid after moving a few inches? Linkage bearings $80. plus labor. Does the shock have damping or does it feel like a pogo stick? blown shock $125. Push on the forks and look for any sign of oil on the fork legs. Fork rebuild $125. try starting the bike, does it start easily, does the engine compression feel correct? top end rebuild $200. - $1500. depending on the bike.

generally used race bikes owned by experts are usually in better shape than those owned by novices because an expert has been in the sport longer and has learned the necessity of maintenance, but there are always exceptions so use caution.

one of the best dead give aways is missing fasteners that either have not been replaced or have been replaced with the wrong type of fastener (i.e. not metric) or simply zip tied. if the owner can’t take the time to replace something that simple with the correct part you can be sure he isn’t big on maintenance.

i don’t care if a bike is one year old or five, always ask when the last engine rebuild was performed and you want to see documentation, never take their word for it. if they don’t have receipts then assume nothing has been done and it will be up to you to do it. todays 250 cc 4 stroke race bikes should have a serious engine rebuild once a year, so buying a bike with only one season on it might not be the deal it seems.

if you have a knowledgeable friend that you trust then take them with you and let them be the voice of reason. too many times people go out to look at a bike and end up buying a bike so it wasn’t a wasted trip. this is the time when two heads are better than one.

Whether you are a buyer or a seller this common sense information can help make you more money on a sale or save you on a purchase so choose wisely.

2006 event schedule

this Is why they Call It Practice

Lets start with the true definition of the word practice – straight from Webster’s dictionary.

prac·tice (prak´tis) , v.t. 1. to do or perform frequently; make a habit of. 2. to do repeatedly so as to become proficient. 3. to work at, especially as a profession.

oK, now that we have that out of the way, i will get to the point of this article. Why does a track run practice the morning of race day? i would also like you to keep the word race in mind. the first reason they run practice is to give you the opportunity to ride any changes that may have occurred in the track since the last race. the second reason is to allow you to get your body warmed up and dialed in before you go race speed. third is to allow you to try to do the triple, double or whoop section over and over if needed, so you don’t crash your brains out in the race.

oK, i know what you guys are already thinking…all the tracks are always the same week after week. this may be true to some degree, but you never really know unless you walk or ride that practice lap to check it out. it would be ideal if tracks could make several small changes each time they ran a race to keep the competition level. but remember Mother nature is constantly altering the conditions of the track. You know the old saying – never assume… what if your favorite double is now a triple. You jump into the face of the triple and well; you will be lucky if all that you hurt is your pride. i also know we feel we don’t get enough laps in practice to just go ride around and check out the track. but remember it is for your own safety before you go out and race through practice. they also run a late practice when you can go out and let it rip.

Will it kill you to go out for the first lap and ride around looking for changes in conditions, new lines in the track, and allowing your body to warm-up? remember it is better to roll a double and check out the landing before you go out and bonsai it. Most of the time the track is wet and muddy for practice providing time for conditions to be good when racing starts. i see so many unnecessary crashes during the practice laps. guys stuffing and taking each other out – for what? the race didn’t start yet. Practice

is not the time to show each other everything you’ve got. Save it for the race. We all came there that day to race not practice.

i’ve also noticed the young guys that just follow each other around the track in the same old ruts rather than going out on their own to look for alternate lines. So, remember practice is just that. it is a time to check out conditions, look for new lines, and turn around and try a section over if you need to. You won’t be able to do this during the race. ride with the correct group for your practice. if you are a “b” rider go out with the “b’s”. remember the “A” riders got there by winning races and earned that “A” practice to themselves and someday you will be there too.

When the start gates drop and the adrenaline is pumping, that is

the time to push each other and mainly our self. competition brings it out in all of us. We find ourselves not backing off in the corners, taking chances we don’t usually take, pushing our bikes and bodies to the limit. there is no reward for winning the practice and taking the chance of getting hurt in practice and not even being able to race that day. it is during the race when your results count and you see the checkered flag fly.

So, take advise from the pros. James Stewart: fastest practice lap time – 00:58.071 compared to his fastest race lap time – 00:56.741. chad reed: fastest practice lap time – 00:59.336 and his fastest race lap time – 00:56.595. i asked you in the beginning to remember that word race. Well, according to Webster…

race (rās), n. 1. a competition of speed, as in running. 2. any contest. v.i. 3. to go or move swiftly.

See the difference? Just keep those two definitions in mind on your next race day. Let practice be practice and let the fastest man or woman win the race.

good luck this season and keep it safe.

Saturday April 8th brought some of the best racers on the east coast to the newly designed Doublin gap MX Park for a Loretta Lynn north east area qualifier. unfortunately it also brought some of the heaviest rainfalls the morning of the event that this area has seen in quite some time.

the rains started early Saturday morning and did not let up until early afternoon. the crew at Doublin waited for the rains to stop before getting out on the course to work their magic. they delayed the start of the race to get the track in the best shape possible for the next two days of qualifying. Stock classes on Saturday and Mods on Sunday.

At approximately 3:00pm the Yentzers determined that the track was ready and it was time to go racing. the race was reduced to a five lap one moto format but

they got the job done. After the amount of rain that fell it was amazing that any races went off on this day.

the biggest highlight of the day was young Malcolm Stewart from Haines city, Fla. Yes, you’ve heard the name before. James Stewarts’ younger brother Malcolm traveled to Doublin gap to get qualified in the norheast. Malcolm pulled off a win on Saturday after chasing West Shore Suzuki’s Levi toth for most of the moto. Stewart got around toth with two laps to go and raced for the win.

MrA was not able to be there on Sunday for the balance of the qualifiers. check our website for photos of Saturdays racing action at www.mcracingaction.com . For Sundays results check out www.doublingap.com .

engLIShToWn, nJ, APR. 9Sunny weather finally greeted the racers

at raceway Park on April 9th. With rain before and during the last couple of events the showers that preceded Sunday’s race may have scared away some racers but those who did attend were treated to excellent racing conditions. After a sloppy practice Mickey Kessler and the track crew got to work and after a short delay created a top notch track for the racers.

in the first collegeboy moto Honda rider Jason Hess grabbed the holeshot and jumped out to an early lead followed by Jeremy Weniger and Pete Devlin. Suzuki mounted Devlin battled briefly with the Kawasaki of Weniger eventually going by just past the big double in the center of the track. Monmouth cycles sponsored Devlin set his sights for Hess and tried to run the leader down but he would have to wait for the second moto as he ran out of time in the first moto. Hess took the win, followed by Devlin in second and Weniger in third. the second moto again saw Hess grab the early lead followed by Devlin and Weniger. this time Devlin ran the leader down and got by him going up the staircase section of the track but then got caught up behind a lapped rider and Hess got back around. but Devlin wasn’t about to let the moto and overall slip away as he got by the Honda rider at the bottom of the “Plunge” and made

the pass stick. Devlin went on to take the moto and overall win followed by Hess and Weniger.

in 250 novice racing Parlin nJ Honda rider greg Ziola grabbed the holeshot in both motos on his way to two moto victories and the overall as well. He was followed across the line in both motos by KtM rider DJ Mowery and Suzuki rider george Dennis.

bel-ray Lubricants sponsored curt beloy grabbed the early lead in the first 25+ expert but was eventually passed by rrP Honda rider ty Wallace and greg Pamart. Wallace held on for the victory with Pamart settling for second and beloy taking third. Holeshot specialist Frankie eckel grabbed another holeshot in the second moto with Wallace and Mcilvaine in tow. MSr/Scott backed Wallace went on for the victory followed by Pamart and Dragon optical sponsored richie Zupko in third. beloy went down in the first turn and would not finish the moto.

the next event at raceway Park is Saturday April 22 with round #2 of the Parts unlimited northeast classic Series being held on Sunday.

engLIShToWn, nJ, APR 8For the first time in the history of

motocross racing at raceway Park, the youngest motocrossers have been allowed to race. For many years the minimum age requirement was seven years old but after petitioning the state to allow younger racers for the past year rich Schmidt and the staff of raceway Park were allowed to hold their first Pee Wee Mx series event for racers as young as four years old. opening day for the series was held under rainy skies on the eighth of April and features seven different

classes for the nearly 50 riders that braved the sloppy conditions. the series, sponsored by local Honda dealer Freehold Honda, consists of six rounds with a brand new crF50 going to one lucky participant at the end of the series. in addition to the seven bike classes there are also three different Quad classes for youth participants.

the track which was a shortened version of the famous Mickey

Kessler prepared race track started wet in the morning and continued to get worse throughout the days events. Due to the worsening conditions it was decided to run only one moto in each class.

Devin Kusmider and Dean Marinis were the big winners of the day. Kusmider finished second place in the 4-6 Xr/crF/ttr 50 class and first in the 4-6 50 oil injected class and Marinis was second in the 7-8 50 stock class and first in the 4-8 open class.

in the end a fun day of racing was had by all and the great sport of motocross has been introduced to another generation. Stop by for the next round of racing on Saturday May 27th.

We have all heard it before. “So-and-so’s opening up a track” or “So-and-so’s turning their practice track into a real race track”. i know i’ve heard it a handful of times. About four years ago my riding buddies and i used to say “We’re riding at elkland today”, but now…it’s more like “We’re going to Miles Mountain today”.

i’ve seen Miles Mountain in all its glory and i’ve ridden there before 99.9% of District 6 has. it has been my pleasure to see this track evolve as District 6’s newest and biggest track. not only does Miles Mountain have a gigantic outdoor track, but a Supercross and Mini-track as well. First, some brief history.

Miles Mountain started as a small practice track. it was built by Mike egleston for his son Phil to practice on, and for the most part it was only a narrow path through a large pasture. it served as

a great place to ride for a few locals and i was lucky enough to meet some guys and get up there myself. i can vividly remember running through huge piles of cow poop on the track. the large downhill triple was some grass and sod that was shoveled into a big pile and the step up was a little hairy, plus the whole place was riddled with big rim bending goonies. in 2003, the eglestons decided to open the track up to the public and try and have a couple of races. Little did they know how much work and how much dedication the track would need to be in race form.

A 40 man gate was added, a concession stand was built as well as the pride and joy of the track; the announcers tower, which also doubles as the sign-in stand and paramedic station. the tower is 3 stories high and from the top, you can see the whole track. Like i said earlier the track was

a little rocky so they hauled in 200 loads of topsoil to make the track pristine, also access roads were built and 250 loads of gravel were dropped in for the parking area. one of Miles’ best features is that they hold open practice very often on non-racing weekends.

i asked Phil about what makes Miles Mountain stand out from the other tracks and he said “Well, it’s been a work in progress ever since we’ve started and we still haven’t finished it yet. With changing sections and making everything raceable it’s tough to get to everything that needs to be done, but we’re getting there. other track promoters have helped out tremendously in getting us ready to race, so a big thanks goes out to all of those guys, they know who they are”

For some that don’t know, Miles Mountain introduced c class and b class race for free days

last year. i asked Phil about his thought on those events. “those days were huge for us. With the price of gas skyrocketing and racing becoming more and more of a money issue we thought it’d be a great idea to have a race for free weekend. Last year both race for free days had people packed up on the gate, i think we may have even had to have a qualifier. We just thought it’d be something different too, how many chances do you ever get to race for free? We’re doing it again this year too, hopefully with the same successful turnouts.”

Since i’ve ridden at Miles Mountain i’ve seen some sections added, some taken away and some put back. the township took out part of the track near the road to start construction on a new bridge. that section of the track was closed and has since been re-opened. As well there is a newer woods section that has a switchback and a wall jump step-up. Also, a new hill loop has been added to throw some more technicality into the track and lengthen the lap times a little more. “We really want to make some changes this year. i’d like to have a section of the track that is going to be different every month. Just not the same old, same old. We’re listening to our riders and many of them want a more technical track, so we’re going to make it happen this year.”

Miles Mountain has also put some great weekend family and racing packages together, something other tracks aren’t doing. “We figured if you’re bringing your whole family up to race or even just coming up by yourself and racing both the Supercross and the Motocross tracks, you’re spending enough money already, so we started putting packages together that save families money. We just want everyone that comes up here to have a great time riding and go away with a smile on their faces.”

Miles Mountain added a Supercross track in the Spring of 05’ and has been running night races on Saturdays. “if you are the type that likes to ride ALL weekend long, then you can come up, practice on the MX track on the day on Saturday, then race SX track on Saturday night, and then race the MX track on Sunday, plus you get a discount when you do all of that”

Last year, i was lucky enough to see the Alessi’s as well as Paul carpenter, tedesco and bobby Kiniry ride at Miles Mountain before the national weekend at broome. they had nothing but great feedback about the track. And they flew up there.

i’m not giving any secrets away, but there will be big things going on at Miles Mountain within the next year. the track will be seeing serious changes and serious editions. i urge everyone to jump on route 15 and get up there, i can almost guarantee that you will have a great time. if you need any information you can find it on their website at www.milesmountainmx.com if you have suggestions or comments, you can find Phil prepping the track with the tractor or dozing something. if he’s not doing that, then he’s out riding. get to Miles Mountain and have some fun!

Saturday April 15th brought round # 2 of the District 6 AtV Points Series to Sleepy Hollows brand new for 2006 quad track. close to 200 AtV racers showed up to try out the new Sleepy course and to chase the valuable D6 points being offered on the day. this year the promoters from the district elected to run a 14 race point series with 4 rounds each being held at Sleepy Hollow,

the Flying Dutchmen and Atco with the two remaining rounds being hosted by raceway Park. there will be a separate motocross only banquet this fall with the members of the motocross committee promising better awards and payouts than ever before.

the racing was intense and the gates were full at this event. there is talk of a new c class forming in the near future partly due to the huge turnouts in the b class. three heats plus a LcQ were necessary to determine a final gate for the 231 – open b division. Many people also believe that the spread of talent is too large and their needs to be a class where the beginner can get his feet wet. i’m sure the folks from the district are looking for rider input, so please contact a district representative or one of the quad promoters to voice your opinion. by the way, Luke Deatrick from ickesburg, PA rode off

with the victory in the open b final.the heavy hitters made their way to

Sleepy for this event as well. American Suzuki’s Jason Dunkelberger was present campaigning the new Suzuki 450 along with Pro racers Pat brown and randy Lehr. Local favorite ernie ehrenzeller was on hand as well to make things interesting along with 16 other A riders to offer a full

gate for the expert racing action. in the end it was Dunkelberger with the win followed by brown and Lehr. the quad Anything class was almost a repeat of the open A race with randy Lehr going 2-1 for the overall.

And let’s not forget the youth of the sport, some of these young guns have a very promising career ahead of them if they continue on their current paths. Many of the shifter youth classes are turning as fast a lap times as some of their bigger counterparts. check the results on the opposite page to see who finished where.

there was also a motorcycle race at Sleepy on this day as well. need i repeat my self or even write about another A class race. You got it, Phil nicoletti wins 125 and 250 A. if you get a chance, watch this young man from new York race a motorcycle. Again, if the cards fall right, Phil

definitely has a bright future in the sport of motocross racing. other exciting action on the big track found a three way battle in the 125 b

T’s Tech Tips

tis the season…….for mud that is! Let’s face it, not many of us like to ride in the mud, or to clean everything up after the race. but if you’re serious about results you gotta get out there and git er done. Heck, some of us even like the mud. Here’s some tips that might help your day and your day after:

- Spray your bike with some type of mud release. this will make cleanup sooo much easier and will also help some of the mud to fall off during the race. My pick is silkolene pro prep both for dry and wet conditions. it gives your bike that “factory” look and works great for helping dirt wash off easily. Many other products work well too from mudoff to WD-40 and even Pam.

- if you’re getting a parade lap, try putting a strip or two of duct tape (or clear shipping tape) on the underside of your fenders. Your can pull the tape off after the parade lap along with a pound or two of mud. You’ll need to install the tape before any mud release products or the tape won’t stick.

- Some well placed foam in any open areas between your frame and motor will help mud from building up. try putting some on your brake calipers too to keep mud out of your brake pads. You may easily collect 15-20 lbs of mud on your bike during a race. Skid plate foam works best and is available at most dealers. if you’re riding a Loretta Lynn’s stock class, check with the referee first. There was some

controversy with Austin Stroupe a few years ago over foam placed on his brake caliper.

- tire choice is critical. Sure it’s a chore changing your tires, but if you want to win this is a must do task. of course, the ideal setup would be to have a spare set of rims with mud tires installed, but not all of us can afford that luxury. Just grin and bear it and get them mud tires on. Just about

every manufacturer makes a mud or sand tire. My two picks for the most extreme conditions are the Pirelli MXS for the rear and a bridgestone M101 for the front.. both have a radical mud/sand only design only and won’t work on other surfaces. because you’re only going to use them occasionally and tires don’t wear much in mud, you can get several seasons out of a pair.

- Keep a pair of handguards in your trailer (if you don’t already have them on your bike). this will make a big difference in keeping your grips dry and your hands on the bars. if you didn’t safety wire your grips, now would be a good time.

- remove your chain guard over your countershaft sprocket. this part only allows mud to build up. You shouldn’t have to worry about getting your blue jeans caught in the sprocket, right? Make sure you re-intall the case saver. You’ll most likely need some shorter bolts, and don’t forget the loctite.

- A visor extension on your helmet is a must. An old goggle lense is the most common choice. there are some extra long clear visors available too. it’s a good idea to have your number on the side of your helmet. this might be the only clean area on you or your bike. Keep your goggles wrapped in paper towels and in a ziplock bag on your way to the line. Your mechanic (race dad/mom) might want to carry an extra pair too. if you use rolloffs, try some first turn tearoffs too. If you use regular tearoffs, try Scott’s pro stack. they’re a laminated tearoff that helps keep water from collecting in between the tearoffs.

- And finally comes cleanup time. If you don’t have one of those trick mud scrapers from Acerbis or uFo, a plastic putty knife works well. After you pressure wash most of the mud, use a good spray on cleaner and rinse again. i like Liquid Performance cycle wash , castrol’s super clean or purple power both available at Walmart. it’s a good idea to remove your seat, side panels, and gas tank while washing. use an airbox filter cover to pressure wash your airbox.

the most important thing you can do is to keep it on two wheels! good luck.
