MOTORCYCLE RACING ACTION CONTRIBUTORS

Hey everybody – I’ve got some BIG NEWS to share.

I felt that I had taken MRA as far as I could on my own and it was time to get some help. So, I went looking for a leader in the publishing and printing industry to join forces with and Engle Printing and Publishing emerged as the company that I felt could take MRA to the next level. So ... after six great years of bringing you MRA with the help of some great contributors, I chose to add some bench strength and enter into a partnership with Engle Printing and Publishing Company to take this publication to the next level.

In the future, I’ll be guiding the race coverage and Engle will handle the printing, publishing and distribution efforts. By the way, they are the one’s that have been putting MRA in your

can be.

I’d like to thank each and every one of you for reading, contributing to, advertising in and just plain supporting my efforts over the last six years.

With your continued help, and support of Engle, MRA can truly grow to be the best amateur race pub in the industry.

I would ask if you can to help them continue to publish this most necessary publication by supporting it in any way possible. If you have an extra $15.00, please buy a subscription for home delivery. If you visit one of our advertisers, let them know you saw their ad. If you see a photographer spending hours on the track to get a picture of you racing, thank them for their efforts. Anything you do will help secure the future of the newspaper that we all have come to love.

Remember, being in MRA can not only make you famous with your friends but it can also help you attract those much needed sponsors. It helps the advertisers continue to support our sport and it helps the track owners continue to offer you a place to race. But best of all it creates those memories that can last a lifetime. One day you may be able to look back and have proof for your 12 year old that you really were cool - once.

All kidding aside - thank you for the great years, please support the new guy and we’ll keep seeing you on the track.

Round two of the PAMX Regional Championship Series presented by Suzuki and Fly Racing came to Doublin Gap in Shippensburg, Pa. The opener at Sleepy Hollow was cancelled due to the potential severe weather, but this round would be run come heck or high water. Well….the high water definitely came down in buckets.

Saturday’s practice couldn’t have been any better with temp’s in the 80’s and blue skies. From the riders I talked to, they were really enjoying the long and technical track. Doublin Gap’s track crew prepped the track for the first quad race ever held there by widening some sections of the course.

Sunday proved to be the total opposite. The weather man predicted three inches of rain and it made me think we might have our own Daytona Supercross right here in Central Pa. Now you would think with the weather and track conditions, everyone would just pack up and head home. Only a handful did. Over 200 racers took to the gate for the valuable points

which they knew they will need to contend for the championship in their respective classes.

At the rider’s meeting, Jeff Cernic had made the call to make it a one moto format running 5 laps for the

bigger quads and 3 laps for the youth racers. First on the gate was Pro/Am; as it was proven all day, a good start would be the best way to survive. Kyle Dammon on his Cernic’s Suzuki would take the holeshot and never look back. He would back up this finish also with a win in the “A” class. In the Women’s class Michelle Suciu would also use this strategy to win and start her defense of her championship in the inaugural year.

In two weeks, the series will be heading to Maple Shade. By then, the riders who gutted it out should have the mud cleaned off. My hats off to all of you who raced, congrats to the winners and I’ll see you at the next round!!

Keep the throttle pinned!!Michael SalernoRoxstarImages.com

Mountaineer Raceway April 27, 2008

By Jim Bull

The weekend of April 25-26, round # 2 of the MDRA Race Series headed back to the great state of West Virginia. As usual, Saturday brought a practice day and with it some great spring time riding weather. Overnight Saturday was when the real action began, three inches of raining action, rather than racing action came and of course left the new Mountaineer course setting full of puddles and ankle deep in mud.

Just prior to this event, the folks from Mountaineer did a revamp of their track and everyone was excited to race the new course. They moved their starting area over to where the old supercross track used to be and they changed the direction that you ride the track. The killer whoop section that had once plagued many of the amateur level racers was removed and changes were made to jump configurations, etc. making the course safe yet challenging. In talking to a number of racers, many liked the new design while a few said they liked it better the old way. I believe that the rain may have had an impact on some people’s decisions and hopefully for the next round the weather will shape up.

After a brief practice session was run, the crew went out and scraped the mounds of mud from the track. After more practice and several motos of racing, the course actually started to take shape. The starting

area remained sloppy but the racers seemed to get thru it ok.

In racing action, expert racer Greg “Frency” Pamart is back from his winter trip south and made his presence known winning three classes on the day. In other expert action, Jeremy Cook is also getting back into form after a season long injury in 2007 winning two divisions

on the day.The gates were full despite the

torrential conditions as racers stuck it out to compete for those valuable year end points. On top of that, positions are crucial as racers attempt to qualify for the big year end shoot out between the MDRA, the Ultimate MX and the PAMX Series racers.

Please check the results here to see how your favorite racer did. You can check out point standings and important shoot out updates at: www.mdramxracing.com and to view and purchase event photos, go to: www.mcracingaction.com.

Hurd, Fox Fantastic at Hurricane Hills MX Opener

AMA District 34 Championship Series/District Six Points Race

By Jim Sanderson

Hurricane Hills, in its 26th year of operation, opened the 2008 season on Sunday, April 20th. Mother Nature provided a beautiful spring day and track conditions were excellent.

Marshal Hurd and Charles Fox III topped their respective podiums, 250 B and Collegeboy, respectively, each carding perfect 1-1’s. Hurd won the opening moto with a three second lead and then topped that by winning the final moto by ten seconds. Fox did exactly the same thing in the Collegeboy division, winning the first moto by three seconds and the final moto by ten.

Hurd, Alex Hildebrand, and Kyle Endriss led the pack out of the second turn in the opening 250 B moto. Hurd quickly pulled away and started lap two with a four second lead. Hildebrand, William Bleich, Endriss and Gary Peechatka rounded out the top five. The top four were unchanged at the start of the following lap. Robbie Zahuak passed Peechatka taking fifth. Hurd increased his lead to five seconds at the start of lap three while the battle for second ensued for a lap before Bleich finally got around Hildebrand taking second. Hurd started the last lap with a five second advantage that Bleich reduced to three seconds at the checkered flag. Hildebrand, Endriss and Zahuak closed out the top five.

Zahuak, Hurd, Tyler Golding, Endriss and Billy Gallagher led the start of the final 250 B moto. Hurd had the lead by the third turn and quickly pulled away to start lap two with a three second advantage. Zahuak, Golding, Endriss and Bleich rounded out the top five. Bleich passed Endriss for fourth half way into lap two. Endriss was displaced to fifth. Golding battled with Zahuak for most of the lap and finally made the pass for second upon exiting the rhythm section just before the start of lap three. Zahuak was relegated to third. Hurd started the third lap with a seven second

lead. Bleich passed Zahuak taking third in the big sweeper by the start area half way into the lap. Hurd took the checkered flag with a 10-second lead. Golding, Bleich, Zahuak, and Endriss closed out the top five.

Hurd topped the box with a perfect 1-1. Bleich took runner-up with a 2-3 and Zahuak’s 5-4 tally was good enough for the final spot on the box.

Michael Eichler, John Buchanan, Fox, Nick Johnson and Jon Hercik led the start of the opening College Boy moto. Eichler

continued to hold the point at the start of lap two. Fox passed Buchanan at the Hurricane Dinner Table taking second. Buchanan was relegated to third. Fox quickly closed the gap on Eichler and made the pass for the lead at the infield tabletop. Fox started the third lap with a three second lead and kept it to the checkered flag. Johnson, Eichler, Buchanan and RJ Reynolds rounded out the top five.

Reynolds, Fox, Eichler, Buchanan and Johnson led the start of the final College Boy moto. Fox took over the point just before the start of lap two. Fox quickly pulled away, starting lap three with an eight second advantage and increased it to 10-seconds at the checkers. Eichler, Johnson, Buchanan and Reynolds closed out the top five.Fox (1-1) topped the podium. Eichler (3-2) took second and Johnson (2-3) third.

Mulcahy, Dougherty Dominate Northeast Classic at Broome-Tioga 2008 MSR/ANSWER RACING Northeast Classic Motocross SeriesRound 4: Broome-Tioga Sports CenterBy Jim Sanderson

The fourth round of the Northeast Classic Motocross Series had another huge turnout of riders with more than 600 slated for battle. The 250 and Open Pro/Expert and Amateur class divisions ran the former National track layout while the balance of the Amateur divisions ran the abbreviated course layout.

Brian Mulcahy topped the 250 Pro/Expert podium with a perfect 1-1 score. Mulcahy gated second off the start of the opening moto behind early leader, Mitch Dougherty. Mulcahy kept Dougherty within striking distance for four and a half laps and took the lead with a lap and a half to go after Dougherty made a mistake on the National hill. Mulcahy got the win with a seven second lead. Mulcahy led the start of the final moto and kept a consistent three second lead throughout taking the checkers just ahead of eventual second overall finisher, Dougherty.

Dougherty, Mulcahy, Bryan Ricci, Tyler Medaglia and Ronnie Stewart led the 34-strong pack out of the first turn in the opening moto. Dougherty started lap two two-seconds ahead of Mulcahy. Halfway into the lap, Clark passed Stewart at the base of the National hill taking fifth. By the start of lap three, Dougherty and Mulcahy were pulling away from the rest of the pack and by the start of lap four the gap back to Medaglia, in third, had grown to nine seconds. Mulcahy took the lead half way into lap four on the hill. Dougherty finally came off the hill seven seconds later. Mulcahy got the win followed by Dougherty, Clark, Medaglia and Ricci.

Mulcahy, Clark, Henry Rojas and Stewart

led the start of the final moto. After a half lap, the top five were; Mulcahy, Clark, Rojas, Dougherty and Stewart.

Dougherty quickly moved through the pack after a poor start and took third on lap two then second on lap three, displacing Clark to third. Mulcahy had a four second lead by the start of lap four that Dougherty reduced to three by the checkered flag. Mulcahy got the win followed by Dougherty, Clark, Tyler and Jeremy Medaglia.

Mulcahy (1-1) topped the podium, Dougherty (2-2) took second and Clark (3-3) third. Michael Stryker leads the 250 Pro/Expert series points with 25. Jay Weller trails Stryker with 20 and Casey Clark trails Weller by two with one round remaining.

Dougherty topped the podium of the Open Pro/Expert division with a perfect 1-1 score. Dougherty led the start of both moto’s and battled with Tyler Medaglia all the way to the checkered flag in each, taking the first moto win with a four second lead and the second by only two. Medaglia took second overall via consistent 2-2 rides and Barry Carsten closed out the podium with a 6-3 performance.

Dougherty, Clark, Medaglia and Stewart led the start of the opening moto. Medaglia moved to second before the start of lap two. Dougherty stayed just ahead of Medaglia to finish the moto with a four second lead. Clark, Jack Carpenter and Stewart closed out the top five.

Dougherty, Medaglia, Ricci, Patrick Wastler and Andy King led the start of the final moto. Again, Dougherty was able to stay just out of the reach of Medaglia, taking the final moto win with a two second lead. Carsten, Ricci and Jay Weller rounded out the top five.

Carsten leads the Open Pro/Expert division points with 34 to Clark’s 23. Weller trails Clark with 19 with one round to go.

Texter Terrific at Path ValleyBy Len & Ben Breech

Lancaster H-D/Bromley’s/Chris Carr Racing sponsored Cory Texter took a pair of hard won winds in the two largest take-no-prisoners classes at Path Valley’s bi-monthly short track. He topped Brandon Robinson in both the Open A and Open Sportsman finals. In the Open A, Rick Winsett took the lead from Robinson, Chris Klinefelter and Texter. On the second lap, Texter shot to the front of the closely bunched pack, while Mike Poe used the low line to get into fifth by the end of the second lap. The first four were very close until the late laps when Klinefelter drifted into a battle with Poe for fourth that Poe took on the final lap.

Kevin Varnes led the Open Sportsman out of two, with Cory, Robinson, Shayna Texter and Evan Baer close behind. The race was stopped on the third lap when Shayna tapped Varnes’ rear tire and hit the ground hard. She made the restart in a slightly detuned status. On the restart, Cory retained the lead with Robinson, Cory Strickler and Klinefelter. Klinefelter battled with Strickler, but Baer came charging up, taking fourth from Klinefelter on the final lap.

Derek Hersh also took a pair of wins in the 250 and Open B finals. In the Open final, he took the lead from Beau Woodrick, Haden Avery and Travis Diem. While the Lancaster H-D/Don’s Kawasaki sponsored Hersh pulled away, Avery slipped under Woodrick for second off the fourth turn at the halfway point.

The 250 B final had Hersh leading Ryan Connelly, Jimmy Carr, Erin Kissinger and Rebecca Zafia. Carr took second off two on the second lap, and Kissinger fell in turn two on the fourth lap. After another lap was completed, Carr fell on the back stretch. Off the restart, Tyler Stacey took second from Connelly, while Carr recovered slicing his way up to third by the white flag lap.

Charlie Houck led Stacey, Carr, Evan Houston and Jeremiah Snow as the 125 final started. Stacey took the lead off four on lap two. Snow and Connelly got by Houston in the next two laps.

Lew Woods’ lead in the 40+ was short-lived as he dropped out on the second lap, giving John Winsett the lead over Mike Mester, Jim Chapman and Mike Klopp. Mester’s pressure of Winsett ended at halfway when he also dropped out.

Roy Miller was 30 + leader over Varnes, Nick Arment, Woods and Klopp. Miller and Varnes gapped the field, while Woods recovered from a penalty line start to claim third by the third lap. Miller and Varnes rode side by side for the remainder of the race, with Varnes getting a slightly better drive off four and edged Miller by inches for the win.

Ryan Varnes took the 85 (7-11) lead from Cameron Smith, Dustin Healey and Colin Cunningham. Dylan Winsett took fourth on the

fifth lap, while Smith cut into Varnes’ lead in the late laps, but came up short.

Healey led Vanes, Tristan Avery and Cunningham in the 65 final. The front three stayed close, while Smith took fourth on the sixth lap. Coming off the final turn, Varnes bobbled slightly and Avery took second by inches.

Jake Shoemaker held off Jonathan Jordan for

the 250 Sportsman win, while Robinson got by Chapman at the end of the first lap to go on to win the 750 class.

Strickler Steals Pair at Path ValleyBy Len & Ben Breech

Second year Expert, Cory Strickler, picked a great time to get his first Expert win. In fact he took two wins; Open A and Open Sportsman, at Path Valley’s semi-monthly short track. With the start of big money races and the threat of strong thunderstorms, rider turnout was down. And some riders were still coming in as practice was underway. With the forecast, officials went into speedup mode, quick two practice sessions and heats almost immediately after.

Riders knew to ride their heat like a final, and for the four double heat classes, hope your time was better. In the Open A, Evan Baer took the lead on the third lap from Roy Miller, with R. J. Hart holding third. Strickler took the lead immediately while rookie Jordan Harris took second from Chris Klinefelter on the third lap.

The first heat of the Open Sportsman had Ken Yoder leading Strickler, Hart and Garrett Wilson. After battling for most of the race, Strickler used a very low line to take the lead off four on the fifth lap Wilson just edged Hart for third on the final lap. The second heat had Klinefelter, Mike Poe, Baer and Harris at the front. The first three stayed very close throughout. After crashing in the Open A final, Poe made the most of this opportunity, taking the lead off two on lap four.

The Open and 250 B classes also had a pair of heats. Haden Avery battled Brad Phillips for the fastest heat win, while Jesse Long ran away from the other heat. The 250s first heat had Team Phillips, Charlie Houck, Jimmy Carr and Phillips, running close the entire distance. In the fastest heat Derek Hersh and Avery battling for the lead the entire distance.

Hersh held off Jake Shoemaker in the late stages of the 250 Sportsman after Shoemaker had gotten by Dalton Winkler for second on the fourth lap.

Tristan Avery and Colton Smith traded spots in the 65 and 85 (7-11) races. In the 85, Avery got off to a good start and pulled away while Dylan Almony and Smith battled for second. Smith took second on the third lap, but Avery was in a groove. In the 65, Smith got the good start and checked out, while Avery was a little slow off the line, having to fight his way past Almony and Ken Kolsovsky to take second by the fourth lap. Brandon Price worked his way into third the following lap.

A pair of former national number holders, Ken Yoder and Roy Miller, traded first for most of the 30 + final; Miller controlled off two while Yoder led off four. With two laps to go, Miller took the lead off four and held it to the end.

As the final heat, the 125, came to the line, the winds picked up and it started spitting rain.

Carr took the lead from Rebecca Zafia and Houck. Riders spread out, whether rain drops on face shields had anything to do with it? The order stayed the same. Right after the flag, they announced that the two heat classes would be moved to the beginning of the finals. A minute later the skies opened up, making it irrelevant.

The way I saw it:By Jim Mucklin

It poured Saturday night so it didn’t look good for Sunday, what was this like four weekends in a row? As I tooled up 81 the fog burnt off and by practice the sun way out, by the first gate it was drying. Finally a nice day, DMX is always a good day. Seventeen in the gate for 250B what a show. Over in 250 Mr. Holton came to ride and Nick Finelli was right behind him. In open A, an old friend Dustin Kendall stopped by to sport a wild looking Velocity City Honda, done up by Motographx of course. By the second moto the sun was working and the track was fast. In open C Daniel Buckley continues to pound away, great hole shot and he was gone. Over in my favorite group the 85’s Papp and Perry, Papp, Perry and Tyler Conner. While I’m on this is there any class Conner didn’t run? Thanks Tyler and everyone else for a great day of racing.

Raceway Park MotocrossMay 3-4, 2008

Kids Can Make a DifferenceBy Scott Lukaitis photo by Vito Lukaitis

The third annual MX Kids Racing for Hope Fundraising event took place at Raceway Park on Saturday May 3rd. Racing was secondary on this day as the riders were there for a cause. To raise money for the Embrace Kids Foundation.

The MX Kids Racing for Hope charity event was started by local mini bike racer Rocco Cagno and his family three years ago with the goal of raising money for The Embrace Kids Foundation who help children with cancer and blood disorders. This year’s event was once again held with Raceway Park’s Youth Day. A full schedule of races were held for kids from 4-15 years of age.

Local dealers Freehold Honda and Central Jersey Motorsports donated motorcycles and other motocross and local business donated prizes to be raffled off to raise money for the cause and a couple of local expert riders even put on a special intermission riding exhibition. T shirts and special wrist bands were also sold in order to raise money. Former Monster Kawasaki Team Rider Travis Preston even got in the act donating two sets of signed gear to help the cause.

In racing action Ryan Trevelise was a double class winner taking both his class victories in the 7-8 50 Oil Injected and Open 50 classes. KTM rider Christopher Mowery was the Schoolboy 2-stroke and Super Mini class winner.

Other double class winners included Joseph Mancini in the 7-8 50 stock and XR/CRF/TTR classes

and Wilson Fleming won both the 85cc 9-11 and 65cc 10-11 classes.

Local Suzuki rider Kevin Tompkins was the dominant 85cc rider taking victories in both the 85cc 12-15 and Junior Mini classes.

At the end of the day $20,000. 00 was raised on behalf of MX Kids Racing for Hope and donated to the Embrace Kids Foundation. To find out more about the organization and how you can help check out their website at www.embracekids.com

Round # 3 of the 2008 MDRA Race Series moved into Pennsylvania on the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. Again a Saturday practice but this time a sunny Sunday race day. Again, another good turnout of racers as this series now in its third year already proves to be one of the series in our region that draws a crowd to every round. The MDRA is title sponsored by MSR / Answer Racing and offers generous year end gear allowances, great paybacks at every round and some sort of factory contingency at most rounds. The competition is always good as gates are loaded in most classes. And this year they are the brainchild of the big year end shoot out between three of the biggest race series the northeast has to offer. Stay tuned for more details on this as the year progresses. You’re going to find over 20 classes of full gates to determine who the fastest racers in each class really are. On top of that the factory support is going to be huge and I’m sure their will be a ton of sponsors with their eyes glued to this one to see who comes out on top in each racing division.Today’s racing action found a great battle between two young Suzuki pilots in both the 85cc (7-9) and Junior Mini divisions. Both racers chase the

national scene and either is capable of and has won national titles in the past. Jarek Balkovic from Camp Hill, PA and Darian Robinson from Little Falls, NJ swapped a bunch of moto wins with Balkovic coming out on top on both occasions. Watch both these young men as the season continues on and I’m sure you’ll find them both at the top of the class no matter where they compete. Many of the names are the same at the top of many divisions, Toth, Schmelyun, Pamart and Harris

stuck to their usual winning ways. Keep watch of the youngsters as Seth Hammaker has moved up to the 65cc class and took a win today in the C divison with young Gauge Keith grabbing both 50cc (4-6) wins after a knarley get off in the start of the 50 Stock division. Other results are listed here and to check out race

Hendersonville, NC January 23, 2008 – Cruiser Stainless Accessories offers the White Night Rear Lighting System to improve safety and provide peace of mind when backing up a tow vehicle in the dark, or anytime a pickup or SUV is backed at night. White Night utilizes two very powerful 55-watt halogen lamps, enclosed in a high impact black plastic case, to automatically throw an 80-foot spread of white light behind the vehicle when in reverse gear. Terrifically increases rearward visibility. Toggle switch on unit also allows manual operation. White Night is compact

and mounts to the hitch receiver tube of most class 1-4 trailer hitches. Fixed mount units allow full use of hitch for towing. No drilling required and unique Plug-N-Go feature makes White Night the easiest lighting product on the market to install. Learn more at www.whitenight.com. About Cruiser Stainless AccessoriesIn 1942, Paul Byers opened a general sheet metal shop in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Byers Sheet Metal Works quickly became one of the largest ductwork and roofing contractors in the state. Today, the company has been renamed Byers Precision Fabricators, and is headed by Paul’s son, Roger Byers. Byers Precision continues to grow and evolve as a premier industrial precision metal fabricating job shop. The new ultra-modern plant serves a variety of industries including aviation and aerospace, computers and electronics, consumer goods, transportation, military, medical, and robotics.

In 1997, Byers Precision Fabricators added a new division, Cruiser Stainless Accessories. Utilizing Byers existing production facilities and expertise, Cruiser Stainless began by manufacturing polished stainless steel parts for the street rod and hot rod market. The company evolved in 2000, eliminating the street rod and hot rod part line to make way for production of polished stainless steel door sill entry guards for pick ups and SUV’s. Polished stainless steel light bars for the Jeep Liberty were subsequently added to the product line.

In 2003 Cruiser Stainless Accessories saw need for a high performance rear lighting system to better light the area behind vehicles when reversing. To fill this need Roger Byers invented the White Night Rear Lighting System, and resources of Cruiser Stainless Accessories were redirected to it’s production and marketing. The product line has proven to deliver high customer satisfaction, and continues to grow.

Getting Sidewayswith Cory Texter

Hey All,

Not a whole heck of a lot has been going since my last article. No nationals at least. Every year for us we have our first national down south at Daytona, and then we usually have a two month break til Springfield. Some people like it but I hate it. However, it’s good for me because I still get to race at some of the local district 6 races. A lot of the other pro guys poke fun at me because I try to go to a lot of these races and I take them kinda serious. It doesn’t matter if I’m racing a national, a local race, or a play race at our practice track against Shayna. I want to win! These races help me stay on top of my game. We had a couple of TT’s since the last article at Pagoda and Piston Poppers. Pagoda was a pretty fun track. It was pretty dry though. A lot of good riders came out to race. Factory riders Jake Johnson and

Kevin Varnes, Don Mullen, Brandon Robinson, Raun Wood, Yoder, Miller, etc. I was getting pretty unusual crummy holeshots. I worked my way up through to finish two close 2nd place finishes. I felt like I was the fastest one at the event, but just had some bad luck. Piston Poppers was different. My dad and Doug Hersh along with many others who run Piston Poppers put a crazy effort in to build a race track in 4 days. The track was fun, but it was super dry and rough. I couldn’t get off the starting line because of all the layers of dust and I could only work my way up to two more second place finishes. I can’t say I was the fastest rider on this day because Don Mullen seemed to have the place dialed in. The last main event, I felt I was making up a lot of ground on him once I got past a couple of guys, but I just couldn’t

put together a good holeshot/good race package to win. He rode very well, but I’ll be back. A Harley dealer down in North Carolina put up a crazy $11,000 purse race at the end of April. Every one of the top pro riders around the country showed up for this race. It was like a mini-national. Me and my good buddy Weasel made the trip along with the Varnes’s and Raun Wood. They only took 12 to the final. My framer blew up before we even got on the track, so Babe DeMay and Clayton from the Memphis Shades/Factory Yamaha team asked me if I wanted to ride one of their bikes. I thought they were joking at first! We had a mechanical problem in qualifying which put me on the back row in my heat and outside front row in my semi. I won my semi and made the show. I felt awesome on the bike. I came from last place in the main event to finish 8th place and moving front. It was a freight-train. First place was only 7 bike lengths in front of me and I finished 8th. Crazy, huh? I reeled in Coolbeth, Mees, and Varnes at the finish and I honestly think we could of snuck by them with a couple more laps, but we just ran out of time. It was a great experience and hopefully I get the opportunity to ride for them again sometime soon.

I just got a new RM-Z 450, so I have been riding that almost every day at my practice track. I love the power of it and it just handles super good. I’ve been real busy seeing a trainer at the gym now. Brian Beddow is his name and he has been doing an awesome job of getting me in shape for the season. I have never been in better shape then I am now and we can only continue to move forward with it. Non racing related news was I got to go to my first ever Flyers playoff game where they won against the Montreal Canadians. Wow. What a crazy event. I thought the whole building was going to fall down. Philadelphia fans go through a lot, but man are they devoted. I also got to meet Holly Cote, who is the wife of Philadelphia Flyer Bruiser Riley Cote. We still chat and they have plans to come to a race this year. Next up on the national schedule is Springfield, Illinois on May 24 and May 25. My sister will be racing the Friday night pro-sport TT and I will be racing the national TT on Saturday and the mile on Sunday. Then we have a national in Vernon, NY the next weekend after that. We have a couple of local races the next couple weekends after that and then we have national races in Tennessee, Ohio and right at home here in Bedford, PA. Busy is the only word to describe it. Thanks to everyone who supports me and my sister and hopefully we see you all at a race soon. Continue to check out CoryTexter.com for weekly updates on what’s going on and say hi.

Cumberland County FairgroundsMillville NJwww.cumberlandcofair.com WHEW!! We did it.464 Riders and 2500+ Spectators. Weather ended up being perfect, just enough rain Saturday night to keep the dust down on Sunday. Smiling faces everywhere you looked.....most had ice cream on their chins or rib sauce in the corners. We are so proud of AA Champ #356 Ryan Rodgers for giving back to the youngins with some schooling on Saturday night. We had vendors, games, music...or

should I say “some Kick A$$ Rock n Roll Sound!”, bouncy, contingencies, prizes, cool displays, MEGA MEGA Spectator Haven and lots of bench racing everywhere you looked. We hope to be able to come back....the future and time will tell.

We had so many great battles in just about every class, from the PW’s to the AA big guys! You guys just remember too, that those AA fast guys were once youngins just like you!! We have pictures to prove it!

Vince Furlong won the Pit bike.

We find it very hard to be able to ever out do this event but we will try our best to at least come close and if the racing gods allow us...we will some day out do ourselves again! It’s a win-win for everyone involved!

We want to give a huge THANKS to all the incredible and generous sponsors that gave to all the riders. You guys made the weekend COMPLETE! MOOSE RACING, SCOTT USA, OFFROAD CYCLES, RIDERS CHOICE, FAIRWAY CYCLE, RIZZON CYCLES, RACERS EDGE, B&B OF BRIDGETON, TOWN & COUNTRY, FACTORY CONNECTION, TEXAS ROAD HOUSE, WATER GAP COFFEE CO.,CAT COUNTRY, Tim Dennis, Ryan Rodgers. The list of people that gave just goes on and on....

TimDPhoto Imaging has his pictures of EVERYONE up....OMG You are gonna flip when you see them! We can not say enough about this man. He is true blue and all about you!

The Daily Journal put us in the paper with some cool pics they took. Check it out

The Cumberland County Fairgrounds NEOC Event was a success due to

one thing....Dedication from all the volunteers that gave up their time and hard labor to work this event. You can not put on a show like that with out total commitment. All the weeks of physical labor creating and building, the months of planning and prepping, from the smallest detail to the biggest, it was covered by someone that loves this sport and wanted to be a part of making something special for everyone. This race, no doubt, will go down in the history books as one of the best ever races that came to town....at least that’s what I’m claimin’.

From the bottom of our extremely grateful and happy hearts we thank

each and every single person that helped make this event happen! With out YOU it could not and would not have happened!

To the riders and families that came out to support us...This was all for you and we sincerely Thank You for coming out and taking part in something that was so special to all of us.

Special thanks to Cumberland County Fairgrounds for allowing us to use their facility and bring the sport of Offroad Racing back to Millville and allowing us to show everyone just what our motorcycle world is about!

Hey guys, what’s up? On April 26-27 I went to New Jersey for the N.E.O.C.race at Cumberland County Fairgrounds. This track had a little of everything; woods, grass, mud, jumps and enduro cross complete with logs, jumps, balance beams and a few other crazy things. The track was a little slippery from Saturday night’s rain but that only added to the challenge. My favorite part was the half mile flat track section. It made you feel like Chris Carr for a couple of seconds. There was a grand stand area which is unusual for hare scrambles , but it was full of spectators all weekend. The NEOC staff did another incredible job! Keep up the good work! On May 10-11 I took a trip up to Irish Valley MX (what a beautiful area) for the second round of the 2008 ECEA series. I arrived on Saturday afternoon hoping to get an hour or two of practice. The track offered riding for all levels from beginners to expert motocross. I did get a few laps in before they closed the track down to prepare for Sundays event. It’s kind of cool

to wake up the next morning and have a completely new track...magic!! The Ridge Riders crew put many hours in to make for an awesome hare scrambles course with lots of elevation change, field sections, woods and motocross. The weather was great and so was the racing! Congratulations to Ryan Hall who took the pee-wee overall, leading all six laps and to Jesse Groemm who won the youth overall! Be prepared...you might be on my list for an interview at the upcoming races!

NJ Rider SpotlightBy Scott Lukaitis

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name’s Frankie Lettieri I’m 16 years old from Brick, New Jersey and I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 4 years old.

You started 2007 on minis and finished up on the big bikes. Was that the plan coming in or did you just get too big for the minis?

Well I wanted to move onto big bikes because I felt that the 85’s were doing nothing but holding me back. I got a little big for them but still managed to win on them and do good at nationals, but I felt it was time for big bikes.

You won a couple of National Championships at Ponca City last summer and finished well at Loretta Lynn’s as well, did you expect to do so well coming into the season ?

2007 started off at Lake Whitney and I was nervous, it was my first national on big bikes so I didn’t exactly know what to expect. At Whitney I kind of choked up, got nervous, arm pump, the whole 9 yards and then at Oak Hill I just came out swinging I guess. I ripped a lot of good starts, few holeshots, won motos, top 3 qualifiers and it was good. When the mains came around I got a 1st a 2nd, a 6th, a 8th, and a 10th so I was super pumped after that. When I went back to Jersey I knew for sure I had to train and get ready for Loretta’s.

What type of training and practice program do you have?

My training program is nothing gnarley. I wake up at 8:00 everyday go riding until 1, come home eat lunch, go to the gym for 2 hours and just hang out with some buddies after I get all the work out stuff done.

Suzuki stepped up this season to help out more with your program. How did that come about?

Suzuki definitely stepped up my program this year for sure! I’ve always got help from them throughout 80’s but they stepped it up

which is dealer support, Cole Gress the American Suzuki rep told me that I have to be consistent, so I came out to Ponca and showed him I could do it. I got a 4th in schoolboy and 2 championships then went into Loretta’s and got a top 10 every moto except 1 and then we talked and talked and talked and next thing you know I have a contract and everything is starting to brighten up.

What is it like to be one of the next big guys for Suzuki?

Is that a lot of pressure on you for this season?

Ya know being on Suzuki to me it takes off pressure. I know I have good support behind me and the best bikes I could ask for.

How do you fit the travel into your everyday life?

Well I used to go to school but this year I traveled a whole lot more so my parents worked out something with my school. I can miss how many days I need for riding as long as I make up the work when I get back. ( haha which probably wont happen anyway) still it’s awesome for me because I get to live my dream! I train and ride every single day I couldn’t ask for more.

Plans for 2008?

For 2008 I’m going to all the big nationals and just doing the best I can. I know if I ride the way I know how to ride that I’ll do good and come up with good results

Who are some of your sponsors?

I have to thank my mom and dad and my mechanic, I definitely couldn’t do anything without them. Cole Gress at American Suzuki & Mt Holly Suzuki, Thor, Parts Unlimited, Kessler Pro Suspension, Scott, Pirelli, One Industries, MGX, Alpinestars, Moto Masters, Ogio, Rockstar Energy, Bel-Ray, FMF, Pro Taper, Playground/Pickel, Lukaitis Photos, Ready Filters, E Fitness Academy, Wiseco, CTi2, Cometic, DC, Acerbis

Any closing words? Everyone that’s behind me I can’t do it

without them!!!!!!

The weekend of May 10-11 brought a little bit of a preview of what is to come in late October for the Big Three Shoot Out. Unfortunately it also brought an intense rainy, stormy, hail ridden, windy day to the racers of the PAMX and the MDRA at Pleasure Valley Raceway just outside of Johnstown, PA.Round # 4 of the MDRA Race Series headed North West along with the faithful racers of the MDRA. Another good turnout combined with the racers from the western part of the state brought great competition but also great challenges. There was

a hail storm, we lost electricity, the tunnel jump had to be declared a “no jump zone” because of high winds and there were mini tornadoes touching down around the area.No matter, the race continued on. The crew from Cernics Racing and Pleasure Valley Raceway pushed on and provided a great show. The racers from both series stuck it out

and kept the throttles pinned to race thru the adverse conditions. And in the end, the day was completed and the winners were crowned. It’s hard to judge the results from this day given the weather conditions. Even though today’s event was a round in the MDRA Series, there were many competitors present from the PAMX group. They won a few, we won a few. It’s early in the year and we were on their home turf. Come shoot out time, they’ll have to travel to our home turf. Either way the racing was great, I’d like to give props to both the racers

and the track crew. Everyone hung in there and did a great job on a day that you’d rather be home on the couch watching the Steelers play the Ravens. It just goes to show that our sport is strong, no matter the weather, no matter the economy, no matter who we put in the White House, we still love to race and race we will.

Check out the days results here to see how your favorite racer faired. You can log onto our website at: www.mcracingaction.com to see images from most classes and stay tuned to the pages of MRA to see how this is all going to work out in the end. My prediction is, well I can’t really go there for right now. See you at the shoot out!!

Horner, Kibler and Azadi battle in College Boy racing action.

Some of D-5’s best were on hand at PVR.

Oil truly is the life blood of our engines but most racers know very little about an oils makeup and its capabilities. Oil does more than just lubricate it also helps dissipate heat. Air cooled engines have relied on oil to aid in cooling from their very inception, does anyone remember the fi rst GSXR Suzuki’s, they used oil jets to direct streams of oil onto the hottest components where it gathered heat and carried it away. Oil manufacturers like to see a maximum oil temperature of around 180 degrees hence the advent of liquid cooled engines which are more effi cient at keeping engine temperatures down compared to air cooled engines. Oils other job is to keep our engines clean by carrying carbon, acids, sludge and wear particles to the fi lter.

Oils most important characteristic is viscosity. Viscosity is actually a form of friction believe it or not. If oil were perfectly frictionless it would get squeezed out allowing metal to metal contact. Did you know that as much as 15% of an engines power is used to overcome the friction caused by oil in the moving parts of an engine? The oils viscosity is a compromise, it has to be high enough to protect engine parts yet not so high as to cause excessive friction which robs power. This is why multi viscosity oils were created.

10W40, 20W50 these are multi grade oils. Mono grade oils are described as 20W 30W etc. When you see a multi grade identifi cation on an oil container like say 10W40 for example it means that the oil behaves as a 10 weight at 0 degrees F. Like in

winter which incidentally is what the W stands for, and as a 40 weight at 210 degrees F. This is not to say that the oil becomes a 40 weight at 210 degrees but rather it becomes as viscous as a mono-grade 40 weight oil heated to 210 degrees. The advantage here is that we have an oil thin enough to allow us to easily start our engines when cold but still retain the protective viscosity of a 40 weight oil when our engines are up to operating temperature.

Another item you will see on an oil container is its API rating. API stands for American Petroleum Institute. Familiar API ratings are SG SH SJ etc. The S stands for spark as in spark engine and the second letter is an arbitrary designation meant to describe the oils capabilities. The higher the letter the more current is the oils formulation. Every time the engine manufacturers redesign their engines and they require an oil with new capabilities the oil companies oblige and a new designation is born. A good rule is never use an oil with a rating below what the engine manufacturer recommends.

Oil between moving parts protects them by forming a wedge, the parts literally “surf” on this oil wedge. Oil comes into the wedge at the low pressure end, the wider part of the wedge (when I say wide we’re talking .0018”) and is then squeezed down to as little as 50 millionths of an inch (.000050”). The thicker and more viscous the oil the greater the frictional loss, that is why newer engines are designed to run on thinner oils than ever before but the downside to this is that the thin end of the oil wedge can become so thin that high spots on the metal surfaces can actually touch. To counteract this, engine manufacturers must achieve fi ner and fi ner fi nishes on bearing surfaces. This also shows the importance of keeping dirt out of your engine, that 50 millionths thick wedge is all that keeps your engine from an expensive failure.

There is much more to oil than just its standard long chain molecular makeup. Modern oils have a large number of additives that help them do their job like never before. In the next article I will cover these additives, so stay tuned so you’ll understand what you’re paying nearly $10. a liter for.

CHAIN AND SPROCKETS

By: Tommy PickupGeneral Manager/Service TechnicianTNT Cycles www.tntcycles-atv.com

This week we are going to cover chain and sprocket replacement. This is a pretty straight forward job, but does require some tools that the novice might not have. A tool list is as follows:

Basic Hand toolsGrinderChain Breaker (Approx. $25 bucks)Chain Press (Approx. $25 bucks)You will need to pick-up some supplies as well:Contact Cleaner (One that does not leave a residue)Thread Locking Compound (Non-permanent or the Blue stuff)

Shop Towels

Now before we get started, take some time and clean an area to work. And, as usual, remember that all work described should be performed by a professional. Working on your quad can be and is dangerous and should not be attempted by the inexperienced or beginner. Always refer to you shop manual and follow its procedures. With that stated, and your work area cleaned, the next thing to do is get the quad in the air with the rear tires slightly off the ground. An old crate usually works pretty well

if you don’t have a frame jack. I personally have an old scissor jack out of a Cadillac that works great.

Now, we want to remove the rear wheel assembly (rim and hub) on the chain side of the quad by removing the center cotter pin and nut. REMEMBER to reinstall a new cotter pin. Losing a wheel because you forgot, or re-used an old one, can be a very costly mistake. If you remember last months article on rear axle bearings, I stated the importance of greasing the hub splines on the axle. As you can see by the photo, someone did not perform that here, as this one was frozen solid. What we had to do was to place a two jaw puller on the hub and tighten it down. (Picture 1) Now,

I did not use a lot of torque here because of where the jaws gripped the hub (on the outside). Apply too much pressure, and you could bend or break an ear off the hub. I simply sprayed some penetrating fluid in it, applied some torque, and then heated it with a torch. (Picture 2) Remember that when working with penetrating fluid and a torch, that the penetrating fluid is flammable. So don’t use

the two at the same time, and always be careful when using one after the other. After the hub got hot it popped off and away we went.

With the wheel out of our way we can next remove the front chain guard. This will be followed by removing the chain. As you can see in the photo, someone install this masterlink clip incorrectly. (Picture3)

Now if this is the first chain and sprocket replacement, it is likely that your chain does not have a masterlink. Simply take a grinder and grind the heads off two pins on the same link and use the chain breaker to press the chain apart. Now you can remove the chain. With that out of the way, you can remove the front sprocket, in this case two 6mm hex bolts and an offset retainer. Some use a single 8mm hex bolt in the center others use a circlip. Whatever the case your shop manual will describe proper removal. Next, we can remove the rear sprocket; in this case, four 8mm bolts.

Now with the job half done, take a moment and clean up. Move the old parts out of your way taking care not to lose nuts and bolts needed for the re-assembly.

Moving on, we can now install the front sprocket. In this case, I sprayed the 6mm hex bolts with the contact cleaner, as well as their respective holes in the front sprocket, to clean them of any oily residue. If you plan on using a thread locking compound, you must clean all parts of any oily/dirty residue. If not, you might as well shoot the lock-tight on the wall, as it will do the same amount of good on a dirty/oily part. I used the blue, or non-permanent, so as those little buggers don’t vibrate loose and throw a chain through the engine cases causing hundreds of dollars of damage. With that said, on to the rear. Now I did not use any thread locking compound here, as these bolts have a self-locking nut (which are re-usable a limited amount of times). After inspection these were re-installed.

This now brings use to the part of the job where some of us get into a little trouble … installing the chain. It is very hard for shops to carry chain sizes for all the different quads out there. So a lot carry a couple sizes. This particular chain called for 98 links. I had a 110 link chain (which costs basically the same) that I cut to fit. Now I do not

count the links and cut it. I have seen many people ruin chains this way by cutting them two short and having to use two masterlinks. (A masterlink is the weakest

part of the chain, so putting in two is a no no). What I do is to take all the adjustment out of the chain adjusters (rear sprocket closest to the front) and install the chain. With the chain on the sprockets, you can see where you need to cut it by overlapping as such. (Picture 4) Now

you can only cut whole links out. If it lands on a half link, simply move it to the next whole link. (A whole link is a single plate with two pins; picture 5).

Once that is established, grind the two pins and

press it apart. (Picture 6) Install the chain and masterlink. Now a lot of new heavy duty chains require a chain press to press the masterlink plate onto the pins. (Picture 7) This interference fit

is designed so if the retaining clip does come off, the plate will have a better chance of staying on for the race. It is still always important to check this often. Also, take care not to press the plate on too tight, as this will cause chain bind and eventually failure. With this on, we can finally install the retaining clip. Always remember to install this opposite of the forward direction of the quad. Adjust the chain according to manufactures r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s , usually between _ to 1 _” freeplay at the tightest spot. (You can find the tight spot on a chain by spinning the wheel and checking as you go. There will be a point in the chain that is tighter than the rest.)

Good luck and remember

to have fun.PICTURE 6
