“Caught in the Act”!

CAUGHT IN THE ACTSponsored by:

Happy June everybody, i believe summer has finally arrived. it’s typical, the temps usually do that radical change but this year it seems like it was the precipitation gap. We went from mud to dust in an instant. i was at the race in mid May and i had both muddy bikes and a dust storm in the same picture, go figure. Anyhow the important part is that it’s race season and it’s going strong.

June is always a big month for racing and this year leaves no exceptions. For all of you motocross racers out there we have three rounds of the D6 ultimate MX Series and two rounds of the MDrA race Series this month. in addition Doublin gap will be hosting their Yamaha All Star national and the Loretta

Lynn Youth regional Qualifier late in the month. You can also attend the outdoor national at budds creek over Fathers Day Weekend.

if you are a harescramble racer, back Mountain is running their first event of the year. this is always a favorite on the tour for the PA State Series. And welcome to the racers and promoters from the eceA Harescramble Series. You can now find their event schedules and ads in MrA along with expanded race coverage for their series. they have three events lined up for the month of June so get the bikes ready to go.

in flat track racing action you’ll find 6 events on your schedule for the month including a tt Scramble at Piston Poppers and the double header at clinton county Fairgrounds over Fathers Day Weekend. this event offers two days of racing along with live music, burn out contests and vendor displays. Please remember, visit any flat track race as a spectator in 2007 and earn a chance to win a free swimming pool.

As always we will post all of your weekly race images on our website at www.mcracingaction.com and please visit and thank our advertisers when you can. it is very important to solicit as many businesses that support our sport as possible, it’s what keeps us strong.

until next time.Jim bull, MrA

this month race fans we add yet another twist to our Hotshot column. not only have we changed disciplines to motocross, but we have two hotshots that compete in the same class. not only do they compete in the same class but they are friends off the track as well. How do we end up with two hotshots in the same month, racing the same series in the same class you ask? it’s simple, jusy go watch these two young racers compete and you’ll have your answer.the Supermini division is the showcase class for the mini class riders of today. the competition has always been fierce, but in 2007 there are several racers that can win on any given day. i know the season is young but our two hotshots for this

month have battled tooth and nail from the beginning. the have battled for 1st and 2nd and they have battled for 5th and 6th, but believe me when i tell you, on pretty much any given weekend it’s sometimes tough to slide a number plate background between these two when they are out there competing on the track. in mid May at the new DMX these two guys were bouncing off of each other and using any line possible to make a pass. it was some of the best racing i have seen in i don’t know how many years, it was like motocross heaven. they go out there and get it done, then come off the track and hang out until its time to do it again. Zach and tyler met at the track a few years ago

and have been friends ever since. both have been racing about the same amount of time but Zach is a little older than tyler. one is from Pennsylvania and one is from Maryland. one is pretty outgoing off the track, the other is a little reserved. one rides red and the other rides green, one on the four stroke and the other on two strokes. one said in his first race he finished second, the other said it was pretty bad and i wrecked a lot. one has already been a district champion and the others best season finish is a second. the one said he was going to come out on top at the end of the series and the other said he wasn’t sure. one thing is for sure, they’re both very fast and they both have a great racing future ahead of them.

i would like to thank both of them and their families for the time they gave me at the track. i would also like to wish them the best and thank them for putting on a great show out there on the track. i would also like to make a recommendation to all you supermini riders out there. Keep an eye on these two, they are very fast and they are on a mission. if you aren’t careful you just might get left behind.everybody elso watch out too, who knows where are Hotshot rider or riders may come from next month. until then. round # 2 of the 2007 MDrA Series found us at Mountaineer raceway in the beautiful foot hills of inwood, WV. it was a bright warm day as once again over 600 racers came to compete in this continually growing series. this round brought Yamaha and Suzuki factory contingencies to the newly redesigned track along with race sponsorship from blalock cycle co. and capitol Meats, inc.the School boy and college boy classes would be the first off the gate at this round with the wins going to garret toth and curtis baker respectively.

toth continues to dominate locally as he prepares for a stab at a Loretta Lynns title this year with baker being a

consistent top finisher in both college boy and 125 b racing action. Some of the best racing of the day came in the 50cc 4-6 divisions. the future of our sport looks bright when you consider the talent that continues to develop at the local

levels. Four riders,

Leitzel, randanella, Hammaker and Lahman put on a heck of a battle at today’s round in several motos. if you left the fences while the pee wee classes were on the track you missed some great racing action.in the expert ranks William Duffy dominated the Lites division for the overall while finishing second to Derrick Wile in the Motocross class. Wile was on a mission sweeping both motos for the top spot in the premier class. in the expert age divisions Jeff grove and Jon boser put on a tight race in the newly formed 35+ class with grove getting the win. Here’s a little item i’d like to bring to everyone’s attention. Al carr from reactive Suspension has touched on this in the past and i’d just like to reinforce how important this device can be. it’s a simple hour meter for keeping track of your engine’s running time. in today’s 4-stroke dominated world, this little gadget is

well worth its price tag (usually $40-50.00). it provides an accurate way of knowing the exact running time of your engine. it is very crucial to perform oil changes in the recommended time. if you don’t have one of these on your bike or quad you’re only guessing on the amount of time your motor is actually running.

i get one with every new bike and install it before i ride. installation is super easy. All you have to do is wrap a single wire around your spark plug wire and secure it with a small zip tie (provided with most meters). the actual meter is then attached anywhere you’d like. i like to “glue” mine to the frame with a good silicone based adhesive. i use “goop”, it’s worked very well. After applying the adhesive, use a piece of duct tape to hold it in place overnight. i leave the hour meter on the bike when it’s sold, so you don’t have to worry about removing it. install the meter so you can read it easily. Some bikes allow the frame to be seen through the shrouds, while others are solid (see photos).Although some models include a tachometer, the hour function is used most. i like to keep a tablet to document oil changes, piston or ring replacement, and valve adjustments. i change the engine oil every 3-5 hours. i would not recommend going past 10 hours without changing oil. today’s 4-stroke machines put an enormous amount of stress on the engine oil. they don’t have a large capacity and they produce an extreme amount of heat which breaks down the oil very easily. i’d recommend a semi synthetic for most models with manual clutches. A full synthetic oil is actually too slippery for a friction clutch. of course, this does not apply to the Hondas that separate the engine oil from the transmission oil. Many riders don’t change their oil often enough. Sure, you could be looking at anywhere from $15 to $30 for oil and a filter, but when you grenade your thumper you’ll be wishing you would have spent that compared to the $1,500.00 you’ll now be spending on repairs. Most of the blown engines we repair come in with oil that’s way beyond it’s time. Any service shop will tell you, its pay me now or pay me later. And the later is always a whole lot more! Here’s a quick tip too. if you’re using any of the oxygenated fuels such as VP’s u4, don’t use those short vent hoses on your gas cap. Stick with the full length hose preferably without a one-way valve. these fuels have very heavy vapors. the short vent hoses don’t allow the vapors to escape freely enough. this could actually lead to vapor lock. And don’t store your oxygenated fuel in a plastic gas jug. the vapors breathe through the plastic just like they do in your bikes gas tank. this is why all graphics on fuel tanks are perforated, to allow the vapors to pass through. otherwise the vapors get trapped behind the vinyl of your graphics and cause them to bubble. it’s also why some top riders like ricky carmichael use an aluminum gas tank.

rounds # 3 and # 4 of the bP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series took place at the scenic Ft. of Mountain race course in neelyton, PA. We attended round # 3 and i don’t believe that you could have asked for a better day to hold a race. the sky was bright and the temps warm but bearable to go out and chase the close to 300 riders that showed up to run the Ft. course. Matter of fact there was over 120 adult quad racers and the divisions had to be split into two groups just to accommodate everyone that came to race. cumberland cycle center and roxys Kawasaki were your race sponsors.the Pee Wee bikes hit the track first followed by the Youth AtV’s. in AtV action Kenton Heinbaugh would get out to the early lead but mechanical problems put him to the back of the pack. this opened the door for ethan Worden and brandon Hess to battle for the balance of the race. At round # 3 Worden would be the victor and the two would battle again at round # 4 with the victory going to Hess this time. next up were the youth motorcycles with last years 85 (12-15) PA State champion cody Mummert on hand to get some hot laps in on an off weekend from the gncc Series. Mummert would cruise to the win followed by evan Huston in the Supermini division. Zack Smith would get the win in 85cc (12-15) action with taylor Pecika grabbing the win in the 100/150 Four Stroke class.in big bike racing action Jed Haines would get out in front and race to the win at round # 3 with Jerod Stoner getting the win at round # 4. other winners included thomas cichon in Super Senior and ross graham in open c. in afternoon AtV action ted barrick went home your winner at round # 3 with Andy Lagzdins edging out barrick at round # 4.Ft. of Mountains next event comes in late August with a Saturday evening chicken bbQ on the 25th followed by round # 10 of the PA State Series sponsored by grumbines rV on Sunday August 26th. check out results here and view race images at www.mcracingaction.com.

Pagoda Youth Harescramble & TTPagoda Motorcycle Club - April 21, 2007

By Jace Wade

When you think of Pagoda Mc you think of a natural terrain motocross track with little more than 10 trees on site. A harescramble is the last type of race you would think Pagoda of having, but ten years ago it was a different story when they would have harescrambles on a regular basis. this past April 21st they brought back their harescrambles race for the first time in over a decade. the track consisted of a best time ten minute lap course that zigzagged its way up and down the sides of Pagoda’s natural hills, through the trees that outline the edge of Pagodas property and through the mini track.the rider turnout was a little smaller than expected due to a big harescramble point’s race scheduled elsewhere that drew away those who didn’t make it to Pagoda. the youth riders had a great time racing along with their parents who had big smiles on their faces. Some were watching their kid’s race for the first time and the tight course sure gave these kids a taste of what racing is like. After the youth harescramble there was a “fun run”, free for all adults that wanted to test their skills on Pagodas harescramble course. Lenny Fleischman, retired D6 racer and Pagoda club member and race announcer came out riding his

son bryan’s bike. i believe Lenny just wanted to show everyone that he still had it in him finishing 5th in front of the Pagoda club President randy Kastle who finished 7th. Along with Jason Smith Sr., father of ‘b’ class racer Jason Smith, who raced to a second place finish behind Douglas Vanhorn in the c division. it was a fun event that Pagoda Mc put on and as Lenny Fleischman told me they are hoping to do more harescrambles in the future.the tt flat track event was a great time with a good amount of contenders; the track was fun and even had a small table top on the course that seemed to be an odd obstacle in these races as a few riders seemed to have a hard time hitting the jump.Savion terry on the number 120 KtM 50cc in 7-8 50cc took off on the start and kept on pulling away from the competition in his first heat and was consistent all night in his first ever flat track race winning the class.in the expert class 16 year old Shayna texter on the number 25 Kawasaki gave the guys in the 251+ open A class a run finishing tenth place and an even better second place finish in the 250 Sportsman A&b class close behind Jacob

Shoemaker, number 5j on his Suzuki finishing first.the 4 Wheel Sportsman class also provided some good entertainment throughout the night as the three riders Arthur Matthews # 53,

Austin Willard # 74, and Vincent Snyder # 64, traded positions back and forth in their class with Arthur Matthews finishing first followed by Austin Willard and Vincent Snyder close behind.

Racers line up for Pagodas first harescramble in 10 years.

Suzuki Regional ATV Championship SeriesRD #1 Pleasure Valley Raceway - April 22, 2007

By Shane Hartman

round one of the newly formed Suzuki regional AtV championship Series presented by Fly racing was held at the Pleasure Valley race track located in Armagh, PA. With the weather bursting in the 80’s, nearly 200 AtV racers traveled from six different states. For many D6 and D5 riders, this would be the first weekend of fair weather at the race track. this weekend would prove to be a true testament to the growth of AtV racing and their capabilities with the top runners in the Pro-Am classes throwing down some of the fastest lap times the track has ever endured. Winter preparation is becoming a must on the national level and those who came prepared this weekend would reign superior. While the track consisted mostly of table tops, the multiple whoop sections and whooped out straight-aways would unleash fury on

unprepared riders. on the other hand, even riders into the 90 mod class were able to conquer nearly every jump on the track. the Pro-Am class was one of the largest classes of the weekend with 24 riders, causing qualifiers to be run. in the first moto, it was, Factory Honda, John natalie snagging the holeshot. Hetrick racing’s trent Kandel was hot on the heels as they snaked their way through the first few corners. A scary get off through the whoops for Kandel would open the door for Justin bres to take command of second. Applying pressure to bres was D6 riders, randy Lehr aboard his YFZ. Shane Hitt, a well recognized AtV Pro rider, suffered problems off the gate, but would charge his way into a qualifying position. claiming the holeshot in the second moto would be cernic’s Suzuki rider, Kyle Dammann. While his fast pace would allow him to pull away from the pack, it was not enough to hold Paul gregg who would go onto take the win in moto two. Dammann would hold onto second place with Jr Hinds

wrapping up third place, regardless of his mechanical issues as his head pipe would work itself loose by the second lap. After two motos and a LcQ, the gate was narrowed down to the 20 fastest Pro-Am riders. With spectators filling the infield, the 20 riders charged towards the first turn. John natalie would once again claim the holeshot with Shane Hitt and trent Kandel knocking on his back door. natalie and Kandel would hold a steady pace out front and would remain unchallenged. randy Lehr would once again get a good holeshot and slip into a third place position when Shane Hitt would pull off the track with mechanical issues. easy math put natalie on top with the overall win. Lehr’s consistency slipped him up into the second place overall with Justin bres making a hard charge in the second moto to secure the third overall

position. Kyle Dammann would hold off Paul gregg in the final heat to finish fourth while gregg would round out the top five.

unlimed A class saw a handful of D6 riders hovering in the top ten in both motos. unfortunately, tommy Fink would go down hard in the first moto on the uphill triple. Fink would be able to recover and put together an 8th place run in the second moto. Kale Witmers 9-10 moto

finishes marked him up an 8th overall. randy Lehr put an impressive

second place run in the second moto, but his DnF in the first moto pulled him back into the 9th place overall placement. Josh Walton made the switch to a Honda this year and ran two solid motos finishing just outside of the top ten. the unlimted b class witnessed D6 racer, Drew gilbert snagging the holeshot and opening up a sizable lead to take a moto one win. in the second group, it was Matt Shapaka aboard his #22 machine taking the win. in the final, it was, ohio native, Matt Shapaka taking another holeshot. gilbert would come out with a mid-pack start and begin picking riders off to finish 7th and take the 4th overall position. Shapaka would remain uncontested and take the overall win with Samuel Henderson and gregory Loucks rounding out the top three. A battle would be fought for the overall in the unlimted c class. Shane Hull would go toe to toe with Adam blackburn in the final. Hull would edge out blackburn on his stock Suzuki and take the overall win. While blackburn would claim

second, it was Honda mounted Jamen Davidovich taking the third and final podium position. the Women’s class would prove to be nothing short of the top classes as hard battles would ensue throughout the race. Michelle Suciu would put up two moto wins to take the overall while Kelly Winters would claim second after an impressive run for second place in the final moto. Kristy Laurine took home third place followed by Michelle natalie. Myka carpenter put her Yamaha to the test as she jumped her way into the top five After a great weekend of racing, the Suzuki AtV championship series will continue to build excitement as the points start collecting and championships are on the line.

Ultimate Fan

Years after years, season after season, you get familiar with the people from our local motocross community. the light node from the head you get from the regular people you run into the first few times quick become a handshake and a friendly bench racing conversation. then most of those peoples feel like old friends from your “motocross parallel life”.Phill burton, from Mecanicsburg, PA, is one of those cool guys. We’ve meet threw a common friend and i’d run into him at the races all the time, but didn’t know much about him. Quiet and soft-spoken, he always carries a camping chair and a cooler with him. Most of the time, he show up at the races by himself and unlike most of the people there, he doesn’t wrench for anybody, doesn’t have family member or friend that raced. So why does he goes to so many local races, for the last 30 years? to WAtcH! Let me tell you, this is one passionate D6 fan…

Hi Phill, I know you for a bunch of years know, and I never realize that you come to the races “just” to watch. Did you ever raced?Yea, i’ve raced MX from 75 to 78 when i broke my leg.

So you still going to the races to watch?!Yea, it’s great entertainment, cool peoples. to me it’s the best form of racing there is. i go almost every Sunday. its so much better that any race on tV. nobody [in the local community] realize what they’re missing by not going to the local races. You’ll see plenty of spectators at the local truck pull, monster truck show or demolition derby, but nobody knows about the D6 racing series.

How far do you travel?i go up to Hurricane hills and down to tomahawk. i try to go to a few nationals every year but you’re not as close to the action, to many peoples, you can’t really hang out in the pits.. My favorite types

of events are any Lorreta Lynn qualifier. Always good racing and low key enough to have a good time.

So let me ask you, from the top of 30 years of spectator experience in D6:Biggest changes in MX? -number of classes, sized of the jumps and younger kids racing.Your favorite track? -Doublin gap because you can see everything and the track is design for good racing action.Less favorite track? -Dutchman, not good for spectator. need to see the new track layout, i heard it’s good. Favorite rider? -Any rider that’s competitive, push hard and give 100% on the trackDo you see an upcoming National Star in D6? -Definitely garret toth. great young rider. He’s going to make it for sure.Best moto you ever watch? -05’ LL qualifier at binghampton, 250A class. Jason Lawrence couldn’t get his bike started or stall on the gate, some thing like that... Anyway the starter wouldn’t wait for him and drop the gate! Lawrence got going 30 seconds behind the pack only to pass everybody back and take the win! every lap he rode by the start, he look down at the gate men and flip him the bird!

Cool story! Are you going to the MXDN?Yea, i need to get my ticket, it’s going to be great.

Well phill, thanks for your time and i hope you are going to inspire the D6 tracks to promote their races to the general public to attract some real spectator like you so they won’t have to charge a spectator fee to the racers. See you at the next race!

the state of new Jersey has a rich history in motocross racing. From the early days of Micky Kessler to today’s stars like Jason Lawrence and barry carsten, new Jersey riders have always had that something special. My new website www.njmotocross.com was designed to explore that history and the riders who made it. below is the next in a series of interviews with some of new Jersey’s most well known racers.this month’s nJ Motocross.com new Jersey rider Spotlight is:

Jerry SeipYou are a long time competitor at Raceway Park. Tell us a little bit about yourself. i live in east Windsor, nJ with my beautiful wife and 4 year old daughter, ruth and Jamie.

What do you do for a living?i just recently started working at cooper’s Honda in Hamilton, nJ.

How long have you been racing?i started racing in 1981 at new egypt. this is my 27th year.

What got you started in racing motocross? Some of my friends raced (terry tucker) and told m e to give it a try.

Back in the day you used to travel all over the area racing every weekend. Do you still do that or is it mostly local races now?i still try to race every weekend, mainly just the bigger events. i love the workout and the competition.

Since it is such a large part of your life. What does your family think of racing?ruth and Jamie really enjoy it. the rest of my family never really got involved.

We have known each other for a long time. One of the things that I always remember about you is how organized and factory your set up has always been. Has your organization been a key to your success?it helps. i race three classes and i usually come to the races by myself.

As a veteran racer do you have to train harder than the young up and coming kids?Yeah, which is one of the things that motivates me most.

Many guys you raced against have since retired. Who was you biggest rival? How about now? Micky Kessler and i had some great races when he rode the Vet classes. there are so many different riders from different tracks and different classes.

What is your best racing memory?Winning a national 500 Qualifier and finishing 17th at binghamton, nY Winning the 1st bruce Zimmemann Memorial race at englishtown.

How about your worst? 1996 was a bad yearJanuary – “orlando SX” i crashed in practice, in my heat and in my LcQ.March “englishtown” i crashed during a moto and broke some bones.September i crashed during practice breaking more bones.

Who are your sponsors this season?cooper’s Honda, Kessler Pro Suspension, MSr, Scott, boyesen, one, regina, belray, twin Air & Motographx

Correction:Last months NJ Rider spotlight was on Joel Dengler, not “Denlinger” as printed in the issue.

the 2007 racing season is now well underway and round 3 of the District 6 Quad MX Series was held at Atco Motocross Park on the first weekend of May. clear and sunny skies were

present for most of the day and finally an event would occur at Atco this season were the weather was not an issue. Like many of the two-wheeled riders who raced at Atco for the first time this year at the District 6 race a few weeks earlier, many of the quad racers rode the new layout at Atco for the first time during pre-race practice on race day. First up on the gate was the Quad Veteran 25 Plus class. Honda rider Michael Munn was the first to arrive at turn one, but he spun out at the apex of turn one and most of the riders maneuvered around him before he got going again. Honda riders chris butter and Michael Victor came out of the first turn in first and second, respectively. At the end of the first lap butter and Victor held onto their positions, but Munn was charging towards the front and was now in fifth place. After the second lap was completed Munn had passed two more riders and was now in third place. Munn’s charge to the front ended there as butter earned the win, crossing the finish line ahead of Victor and Munn. the three would battle it out again in the second moto with butter racing to the checkered flag first to earn the overall win, while Munn and Victor swapped positions to finish the race, and the overall, in second and third place, respectively.

in the Quad 71-125cc, Production (8-15) class, eton riders trevor Davis and tyler turner

competed for the overall win. Davis finished 1-1 to earn the overall win, while turner finished 2-3 to claim second place overall.

other impressive performances included Zionsville, PA native travis Wotring dominating the Quad 50cc Stock (4-8) class with a 1-1 finish, and cody Kubinak and Lillo Paxia battling it out in both motos to finish first and second, respectively, in the Quad 51-70cc Production (6-11) class.

Lancaster Harley Davidson/Arai/

Saddleman cory texter took two of his three expert finals as Shippensburg Speedway got its 07 season underway a month late. texter took the open A and 750 finals, and finished a close second to Jason isennock in the open Sportsman final.the large entry list was divided into four heats and two semis for the twelve finalists. on a bright sunny day as today, this quarter mile oval is rather difficult to pass on. texter grabbed the lead from veteran Ken Yoder, chris Klinefelter and isennock. texter kept Yoder a few lengths back while isennock caught and passed Klinefelter entering turn three on the ninth lap.

After losing the 750 heat to a quicker starting r. J. Hart, texter grabbed the final lead with Hart right behind. Jim chapman, Mike Keane and Joe reynolds stayed several lengths behind. Hart stayed close to the flag, but couldn’t make a pass. isennock grabbed the Sportsman final lead from texter with Klinefelter third. isennock and texter left Klinefelter a lonely third, while roy Miller held down fourth. brandon robinson got by Miller for fourth with four laps left. behind Miller, things were happening. Shayna texter followed fellow semi qualifier, Kevin Varnes through the pack, slipping into fifth off four as they took the white flag. A few of the finals did have some movement at the front. in the 30 +, Miller took the lead over Yoder,

rick reynolds and Jim

Haas. With Miller poleputtin’, Yoder used the outside line to get by him in the third turn on lap three. once in front, Yoder put a few lengths on his buddy. the 250 Sportsman was started this year to give the hotshot b riders a shot at a few A 250 riders. evan baer grabbed the lead from robinson, Jacob Shoemaker, Shayna texter and Jesse Long. robinson took first entering three on lap three and gradually put a few lengths on the others. the next three swapped places several times over the remainder of the race, with Shoemaker getting forced to the outside with a lap to go, but used that to his advantage to take second from the outside off the final turn. John Long pulled out to a several length margin over Jordan Harris, chip Lengle, Shoemaker and Dalton Winkler in the open b final, only to have it wiped out by two back markers crashing on the third lap. on the seventh lap, Harris took the lead into one, with Shoemaker taking second on the following lap. Haden Avery led Sam Wiggins, Jesse Long, Shoemaker and John Long jumped to the front of the 250 b final. Wiggins used the outside line to take the lead in turns three and four on lap four. Wiggins stayed a few lengths ahead, while the next three stayed close for second. the 65s saw colton Smith take the lead from Dustin Healey, tristan Avery and ryan Varnes. Varnes took third on lap four, with Healey taking the lead into three on lap five. the front three

stayed nose to tail, with Varnes almost taking second at the line.

Hey everyone,

Hope everyone had a good May. the weather is great and the racing is even better. our professional season has been on hold for a couple weeks but not for long as we start into the heart of the season with our next race in Springfield, illinois on May 26. the AMA Singles Series races the famous Springfield tt and then the next day the AMA twins Series races on the famous Springfield Mile. Since this is only my first year expert, i will only be tackling the tt this year because i have not obtained all of my gnc twins points as of now to run the mile. i am prepared more then ever and i am really looking forward to going to Springfield to get my professional career started and to run up front with these guys.Although we haven’t had any pro races, that doesn’t mean that we haven’t been keeping ourselves busy. We have had a couple local races every weekend testing our new bikes and supporting all the district six tracks that got us all too where we are. our local races are usually pretty stacked with national caliber riders and it’s always good to stay fresh. When i am not racing on the weekends, i am working hard over at my practice track on the weekdays. i have been trying to get my fitness level to where it needs to be to run 25 hard laps at a national. i will usually do 3 hard 10 lap “heat races” and then a 25 lap “final”. i have been doing this for a good bit now to make sure i’m ready to run hard with these guys. besides that, i have just been spending my time at the gym and spending time with my sister Shayna.before we head to Springfield, we are traveling to guthrie, oK for a big stock frame race they are having. Stock frames or “DtX” style frames in dirt track are your typical motocross style frames but lowered and with different wheels and all of the works added to them to have them set up for dirt track. Sometimes you might hear someone say a “framer”. Framers are custom made frames designed specifically for dirt track. A lot of dirt tracks favor the “framers” because of the way they are designed and work at each specific track. Although there are some tracks that favor the “stock frame”, so it’s good to have both types of bikes in your truck. i like both types of bikes depending on

the track, so it doesn’t matter to me. it will be good to race at this event as most of my top competitors will be there so it will be a good little warm-up to see what i have to work on next week before we leave for Springfield.in other big news, my first Junior 750 national will now be June 23rd in Joliet, illinois. it could change again, but as of right now that looks to be my first big race on the Xr 750. i will be mentored this season by chris carr, and Kenny tolbert will be building my motors and wrenching for me this season. it is a huge honor for me and i am more then excited to get the season underway. i really want to thank chris and Kenny for giving me this opportunity. i will continue to work hard and even harder to achieve my goals. the AMA has been working really hard on this new class and i think it’s a great idea to give new riders on the twins some extra seat time on these national caliber tracks before stepping into the deep end of the gnc twins class.on a personal note a young racer from owensboro, Kentucky named ethan gilliam was killed in a motorcycle accident May 5 in Paducah, Kentucky. He was 10 years old and a very fast and awesome kid. i met ethan a couple times at the Amateur nationals and he was always smiling and ALWAYS on the gas! ethan is a cousin of the 2006 MotogP champion nicky Hayden and also AMA Superbike riders tommy and roger Lee Hayden. He will be greatly missed and i’m sure he is up in the heavens racing around, feet on the pegs and sideways! god Speed ethan #95!

until the next issue, ride smart and see ya at the track!cory texter #65a

Dirt TalkBy Bryan Bitzer

the torrential rains that canceled almost every race in District 6 on April 15th reminded me of an event i raced years ago. this was not your typical Hare Scramble at the Flying Dutchman. We were caught in the outskirts of a hurricane that crept into the northeast states. it rained so hard and so long that i swear that some folks probably c o n t e m p l a t e d building another ark. but the race still went on.

the parking area was saturated. the eZ-up’s offered little protection to the wind swept rain and most weren’t even staked; making for some of the most expensive kites i have ever seen. use of inside facilities was limited in attempt to keep the outside weather where it belonged - outside. i changed into my riding gear while remaining inside my small gMc pickup truck, by twisting and bending in ways that would make Houdini proud. i remained in the truck until the last possible minute before lineup, to keep dry as long as possible.

After 10 minutes of waiting at the start, the flaggers and scorers all marched out of the club house in hooded ponchos while keeping their heads down to avoid the rain. it looked as if they were on there way to some initiation to a secret society. in that short time, the rain was so relentless that it had already soaked through my jacket and killed any hope i had of keeping anything dry. i thought to myself “it was going to be a very long ride”.

At the line, we were told that the 2 hour race was being cut down to an hour and a half, for obvious reasons. i figured, hey, if i lose the fight to stay dry within 10 minutes, 30 minutes less of racing was already a huge win. As the race went on, it didn’t take long before everyone looked the same. We were all wearing brown gear and were racing a brown bike. the dense clay soil on the track kept the rain from draining; making us all amateur meteorologists’, as we were able to gauge exactly how much rain fell per hour.

navigation through a course that you could not see was extremely difficult. there was no way to read lines and ruts that were submersed under several inches of brown water. i ended up falling victim to this situation in a bad way. i came around a corner, straightened out, and gave it some gas right into a nasty underwater cross rut predicament. the front end broke loose and continued on its exit path toward the side of the track. in a desperate attempt not to go swimming, i saw a split second opportunity to jump off cleanly, and i took it. As the bike went down i leaped and ran forward.

on any other day, this would have been a great save that would have worked. However, i misjudged three things; my momentum, my water filled boots and the physics of running in six inches of water combined with the previous two conditions. So there i was running faster than my legs could keep up and after about 4 giant heavy strides, i went face down into the deep murky slop, with my arms stretched out as if i were sliding into home plate. What made it worse was the fact that there were spectators right there taking video and pictures; it turned out to be a prime spot for entertainment!

As it turned out, i did finish the race, but was then faced with the next challenge. i now had to figure

out what to do with myself; soaked and muddy. there was not one thread of clothing on me that was not mud soaked. My hair was muddy, my feet were muddy. even my teeth were muddy.

n o w the trick was to figure out how to clean up and load up without painting the inside of my truck with mud. With only two towels, some plastic garbage bags, and a spare pair of shorts to work with, all those years of watching Macgyver would finally pay off. i took the plastic bag and placed it on my seat so i can change into the spare shorts without actually sitting in the truck yet. i did not put on pants, shirt or socks just yet, only the shorts and sneakers.

needless to say, it was a bit chilly dressed like that, but i wanted to use the weather to my advantage and let the rain shower most of the mud off of me as i loaded everything else up. once that was done, i dried myself off as best as i could, put on the warm clothes and threw all of the muddy gear into the plastic bag to deal with later. it was still a damp ride home, but at least it wasn’t a damp and muddy ride.

Later in the week i pulled the bike apart to clean and grease everything. the neck, the swing arm, the wheel bearings, the linkage, the carburetor, the air filter and anything else that offered a place for mud to hide. not my favorite thing to do, but especially after an event like that, it had to be done.

So this brings me to this month’s topic. give me some feedback on anything you do to manage extreme wet and muddy conditions. What do you do to prepare yourself and/or the bike before the race? What about for cleanup afterward? Share some tips that work for you or tell me what tips you have tried that never lived up to their promise.

If you would like to respond to these questions, share a story of your own, or simply want to add a comment, here’s what you do:1. Send an email to [email protected]. Put the title of the article in the subject line.3. indicate if you want your name (class and riding

number if desired) credited or if you want to remain anonymous, that’s cool too.

4. Don’t wait. if you’d like your comment included in my next article send me something right quick.

until next time, ride safe and have fun.bryan bitzer #41

Our warm summer days haven’t arrived yet, but members of ATV Traction have been in full swing for some time. The first thing on our agenda this year was our Youth Safety Training.

In the spring of 2006, 13 members of ATV Traction received training from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources – Bureau of Forestry division, to become ATV Youth Safety Trainers. Volunteers from 4 of our 6 club chapters came to the training classes prepared to learn the skills needed to become certified youth safety instructors. They hit the books for a 2 day training session that involved safety manuals as well as hands-on training with their own ATVs. They were taught everything from basic machine operation to outdoor survival skills. They found that the classes melded well with the Tread Lightly training the ATV Traction members received the previous year. The classes were much more involved than many of the volunteers had expected. Some of the trainees found that there was much to learn.

Our Club instructors have been busy almost every weekend since April with our new Youth Safety Training. I recently attended one of the classes in Venango County where I was surprised to see not only the kids having a good time, but the instructors seemed to be having a ball too.

When setting up an area for the classes, the trainers look for a place where there is generally flat terrain with a small mounded area adjacent to the course where the riders can practice off camber riding. Traffic cones define the course for easy changes between lessons. It generally takes 30 to 40 minutes to set up the course.

The classes begin with the kids lining up in formation. Safety equipment, safety of the machine, and maintenance are all discussed in length. The kids are then shown several maneuverability tasks and asked to copy the instructors as they demonstrate the

proper technique for each test. Among many other things, the kids are taught to go up and down hills and ride over obstacles in a safe manner.

The classes that took place in the Venango chapter of the club took a much needed break about half way through the training. A lunch of hotdogs, pasta salad and soda was provided by the Venango members. The adults had a good gab session going on, while the kids waited impatiently to get back to business.

We at ATV Traction Inc. feel that a big part of our job as an organized club is not only gaining access to land for trail procurement, but to make sure that people are riding on our trails safely. We read about accidents involving ATV’s all too frequently in local newspapers. We feel that by training our children how to ride safely, and how to handle dangerous situations when they arise, we can begin to see less of these unnecessary accidents.

In Pennsylvania a child can not ride his ATV off family owned property unless he carries with him a certificate of Safety Training. Currently the Erie, Venango and Butler Chapters of the club are offering training sessions to all kids with an ATV. Youth Safety Training is provided to kids from ages 8 to 15. All children must wear helmets, protective clothing, and drive a machine that “fits” them. The classes take 3 to 4 hours to complete. In many cases, some of the instructors have to drive a considerable distance, so donations are appreciated, but not a must. We make an effort to train children, donations or not. If you are interested in bringing your children to a class, you can contact any one of the chapter presidents off our web page at: http://www.atvtraction.org They will connect you with the instructors. Be sure to check our club web site for the summer’s up coming events.

ATTENTION RECREATIONAl

RIDERs Please Read:

Here we are into our fourth edition of Rec Rider within the pages of MRA. If you notice this month our Recreational section is smaller than it has been in the first few editions. No worries, at this time we still intend to continue to pursue this new endeavor. There are a few reasons for this months shortages, number one being that race season is in full swing and my attentions have been focused there due to the large demand. Number two, we are still on the lookout for reporters to help us cover the expanse of the recreational marketplace. Different from racing where the bulk of our events take place within a certain region, recreational riding carries no geographical boundaries and draws us to all ends of the state and beyond. The bottom line is that I am short on the time that I can give to Rec Rider and for that I apologize.

One of our biggest needs in making this publication a reality is contributions from you, the recreational rider and your clubs. There are many outstanding clubs and events going on all over the state of Pennsylvania. We would like to give you a place to compile information and keep up to date on what’s happening in your sport on the local scene, not what’s going on elsewhere. We want to give you a central place where you can find valuable information on where to ride and what type of products work best. Where you can find safety training for your youth and how to keep your rides maintained.

We need your help; we would like to offer every club out there a free column each month to help keep your members in tuned to what’s going on in your neck of the woods. We want to hear about your past rides and where you are heading in the future. We want to give you the most informative publication available to help make your recreational riding experiences more fun and rewarding.

I would like to thank those that have been contributing, you have no idea how much you are appreciated. It’s because of people like you that allow the rest of us a place to ride. Times are changing and we need a voice, Rec Rider just might be that voice to take us well into the future. If you have an interest in being a part of what we are doing or even a story to contribute, please contact me at: [email protected].

Thanks for your time and interest, I look forward to the next 1,236.348 issues of Rec Rider, coming to a trail near you.

How bout’ that exhaust?By: Tommy Pickup, General Manager, TNT Cycles

www.tntcycles-atv.com

I hear the question more often than not … “what exhaust pipe should I run,” and “do I need a jet kit with that?” The answer to those questions is not one that can be rattled off. There are many factors that go into what pipe you should run, which manufacture to choose and whether or not a jet kit is needed. The first question you have to ask yourself is how much do I want to spend. This can really narrow your choices in a hurry and usually answers the next … do you go with just a slip on muffler or full system.

The next question, regarding the jet kit, is not as simple. First off, there is no such thing as a “drop in” jet kit that cures all your carburetion problems. That is not to say that a jet kit is a bad thing. It does give you (depending on manufacture) a nice selection of jets that you can use to properly jet your unit. If you never jetted a bike/quad, then I would definitely leave this to a technician with some experience. I would speak to the tech and see if he recommends a jet kit for your particular application.

Moving on, if you decide that money is a factor and you are simply looking to pick up a little more power and quicker throttle response then a slip on will probably do the trick. Cobra makes some nice stuff for ATV’s that is under $200 bucks. Usually, if this is the only mod, you do not have to re-jet the unit. However, if you are uncertain or the manufacture does not say, let the tech install the pipe and make the call.

Now if you decide to go the distance and budget is not the major consideration, then I would recommend a full system. These systems are really complemented with some air filter mods, like a higher flowing filter, air box modifications or both. This will require re-jetting, but the performance gains are usually worth it.

Now for the tough question, what pipe should I run? This is one that I cannot answer, as it depends on what your looking to do and what type of riding your gonna do (i.e., motos, GNCC, harescrambles, trail etc.). I would talk to your tech and see what he recommends. Also with new noise requirements in AMA events, make sure your legal. See what the pipe maker says about his pipe and what type of riding they build it for. But don’t fall victim to the hype and do some homework. Check out some forums and see what others are saying about a pipe they have. Don’t just throw money at performance parts and expect results. It is best to work with a good tuner and let him set a plan for your mods. A lot of times you can do things in stages so each stage compliments the previous and you can do it in steps so as not to break the bank. Keep it fun and enjoy the sport.

If you guys and gals have any thing you’d like to read about in future shoot me some emails and I’ll do my best to put it together. Email me at [email protected].

ATV Park Debuts Ahead of schedule

BY JUlIE BENAMATI

The Tribune-DemocratPATTON — Christmas came early near the

village of St. Lawrence. After four years of patience and perseverance, Rock Run Recreation Area quietly opened Thursday to ATV and other off-road enthusiasts – two weeks ahead of its scheduled May 17 grand opening.“We finally cracked the gates open,” said state Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Patton, who chairs Rock Run’s board of directors. “We’ve been waiting for years to do this.”The trails are expected to provide a tremendous boost to northern Cambria County’s economy as one of the region’s top recreational attractions. The Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority purchased the 6,000-acre tract, formerly a strip mine, with a $2 million grant from the state in March 2004.Almost $6 million has been spent to get the park ready for the thousands of visitors expected to roll through the gates and over its 50 miles of trails by fall. Snowmobiles will be the vehicles of choice come winter. Haluska said Rock Run’s board decided after a Tuesday meeting to open the park early.“We wanted to let the word drift out there, and be low-key,” Haluska said of the spur-of-the-moment decision. He said the only announcement made about the early opening was a blurb on the park’s Web site: http://rockrunrecreation.com.Not only did park employees sell the first season pass on opening day, the first Internet transaction for a season pass was made.“Everything’s set up, and we’re ready to go,” Haluska said. Visitors can buy passes on the site. Required waivers can be downloaded and printed to save time upon arrival.Haluska and the park’s four seasonal, part-time workers are eager to see whether this weekend, with good weather, will bring a caravan of ATV trailers.“I think we’ll be busy,” the representative said.

Pre-Race Preparation For many people the correct diet, exercise routine, stretching and mindset may play a very important role in how you will perform on the motocross track. if you develop a routine of good habits that reinforce the skills needed on the motocross track it will certainly help you to succeed. Most experienced riders have probably developed a routine to prepare for an upcoming race because they know they perform better when they can concentrate. these routines are an integral part of racing because they not only determine your body’s readiness to endure a high amount of physical stress, but they also determine the type of mindset you enter the race with depending on the type of interactions you have prior to the event. understanding this concept and how things affect you is key

to proper preparation and success on the motocross track. Physically preparing your-self is much easier then mental preparation so we discuss these concepts first. if you are on a training program you should not do any activity two days before racing and get plenty of rest. As a general rule your current perfor-mance is usually a manifestation of what you did two days ago. the day before the race should either include practicing for a bit or some type of medium training exercise. this will keep your body ready for the following day, instead without

exercise your muscles will tight-en. be sure to stretch very well before every race, this is not to “loosen you up” but to ready your muscles and joints for upcoming work. Stretching and yoga is proven to improve dexterity, flexibility, endurance, and reaction speed. the right diet is another key part of success to motocross racing. Water is probably the most impor-tant part of a healthy diet. considering are bodies are composed of 90% water we should always be properly hydrated to function properly. (i personally drink almost only water) Fruit derived carbohy-drates are know to speed up your metabolism so the correct combination of fruits and vegetables is one of best choices on race day. (actually before or during any physical activity) Another important part of your diet should be protein intake. this should be done in higher amounts the days before the race and then in very small amounts the day of the race. the best sources of proteins are soybeans, nuts and granola. these foods contain elements that are not only exactly what your body needs but also provide more protein with a smaller portion. eggs, chicken, turkey and fish are all excellent animal sources of protein but should be eaten in moderation in the days of preparation. Personally i like to stay away from red meats during preparation because they contain little quickly digest able nutrients that will be utilized during exercise. Since red meats are difficult to digest they also slow your metabolism and reaction speed. For the day of a race i like to eat eggs, granola, fruit, tofu, and veggies. beta-carotene in carrots, onions, wild rice and beets is also a strong endurance and strength enhancer, coupled with the potas-sium of bananas to help prevent lactic acid build up is an ideal pre-race combo. Mental preparation for a race is really something everyone must figure out by himself or herself. this is because everybody is unique and everybody will have their own preference of how to ready their mind and guide their intentions. the best advice i can give is to always strive to find balance. if you have any questions please feel free to email me at: [email protected]

Welcome to the new DMX, now known as the Dutchmen MX Park. rob Papp and his family took over as new owners last fall and t h e y h e l p e d the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle club run their last motocross race ever. it was the end of a 40+ year run and an end to an era of commitment to motorcycle racing here in D6 on the clubs part. Since then the Papps have invested much time and money into their new and exciting endeavor. they ran their Fall 06 and Spring 07 Harescramble Series races and the first weekend of May they promoted their first motocross race on the newly designed track. this past spring while covering a harescramble race there i watched as the heavy machinery sat sifting the rock from the dirt, even as the race was taking place. Since then there has been a new main track layout designed for motorcycles only. A new starting location and gate were added along with fencing and other facility improvements. At the location of the old mini track, again changes. the course has been enlarged and redesigned and both quads and mini bike classes will compete there.there have been some small bumps along the way, but each time DMX seems to respond and to make changes. it is a learning experience and like the harescramble races went i am sure that each motocross event will show changes and improvements. in talking to the racers at this event, most liked the new track layout and were hoping for a great year here. A good crowd showed for DMX’s first motocross race ever and i would recommend checking it out for yourself. coming up in June they have a Saturday night Pit bike race followed by a Sunday motocross event. You can get all the details at their new website: www.dutchmenmxpark.com. check out results here to see how you favorite racer did and be sure to check out event pictures at www.mcracingaction.com .

round # 2 of the ultimate MX Series landed at the Pagoda Motorcycle club in mid May. Actually this event was scheduled as round # 3 but with the reschedule of the first round to early June due to inclement weather, you get the picture. Anyhow there was a huge crowd on hand to chase the factory contingency money being offered on the day. Lebanon Valley cycles was your race sponsor and as usual the Pagoda club members kept things moving right along.First off the line was the 125 A split gate with the Vet A riders. Jeremy cook would go 1-1 to win the 125 group with the crazy Frenchman greg Pamart taking the Vet A win. After that we saw two, almost full gates of 125 c riders take to the track to set up the final main event to spar for the factory contingency money. in the end it would be Zach Klaptosky taking the win followed by ritchie Kastle then Anton Kotulski. Daryn thompson would finish fourth in his debut on the big bike with Damian Krause rounding out the top five.the racing was intense in many classes and we saw over 35 racers in classes like 250 c, 125 b and 85cc (7-11). the Supermini action was hot as usual with Dylan brajkovich taking home the win on this weekend. Watch this class folks as the year progresses, some of these young racers are just flying as they prepare themselves to move onto the bigger bikes. As always the mini warriors took to Pagodas kids track that sits down over the hill, this is a great program for future racers to get a feel for competition. if you have a young one and would like to get them started racing motocross give this track a look.the D6 ultimate MX Series picks up steam as it moves into the month of June, the first three weekends offer a series race with two of them hosting factory contingency. For more information on this great series log onto www.amadistrict6.com or contact a District 6 track promoter to see how you can get in on the action. Pagoda offers a Saturday night SX followed by a Sunday MX the

first weekend in June. to stay up to date on everything happening at Pagoda got to their website at www.pagodamotorcycleclub.com and to view event pictures from today’s race check out www.mcracingaction.com.
