Surgical Education Qualifications and Activities
1. MEd Masters of Education (in Surgical Education) Imperial College London,
November 2016
This masters degree provided me with a sound theoretical background in the
principles of surgical education and educational research methods. The
modules were based on policy and the context of surgical education, learning
and teaching, assessment and appraisal, simulation and technology
enhanced learning. I also completed an additional healthcare management
module at the Imperial Business School. My research dissertation was based
on developing and qualitatively validating the concept of shared haptic
guidance in a virtual reality surgical simulator.
2. I completed Training the Orthopaedic Supervisors (TOES) Course, British
Orthopaedic Association, London, 2014.
Recent educational activity:
1. Appointed as The Royal College Surgeons of England Surgical Tutor for
Hywel Dda NHS Healthboard, May 2017
2. I co-conceived and I lead the cross specialty teaching program at Glangwilli
Hospital. This is a formal teaching program held at the postgraduate center
for all the surgical specialty FY's and CT's. I teach here weekly. This program
is in response to the Deanery's concerns about the quality of support for the
cross specialty emergency junior doctor cover as well as in response to the
challenges associated with junior staff recruitment and retention. The formal
feedback by the junior staff has been Good or Excellent in 94% and
attendances remain high.
3. I am an accredited educational supervisor. I am the representative for Hywel
Dda on the Wales Deanery Trauma and Orthopaedic training committee. As
such I sit on the ARCP’s and higher surgical training interview panels.
4. Locally at Hywel Dda, I am closely involved in the training of ST3-8 in elective
and trauma surgery. I also hold practice viva sessions for those sitting the

FRCS (Tr&Orth) examination.
5. I supervise intercalating anatomy iBSc medical students from St. Georges
Medical School medical students in osteological projects with orthopaedic
clinical relevance.
6. I have been successful in applying for an Academic FY2 who will join my
team in August 2017.
7. I teach post-graduate medical students from Swansea University Medical
School both formally and informally on ward rounds, clinics and in theatre.
Leadership, Management, Risk Management
My formal leadership and management qualifications that help inform my current
practice are:
1. Post Graduate Certificate (PgCert) in Leading Clinical Innovation and
Improving Performance, Tees University.
2. Level 7 Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Certificate in Strategic
Management and Leadership, 2016.
3. I successfully completed the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Clinical
Leadership Program, Newcastle, 2013-14.
My leadership, management and risk management experience includes:
1. Treasurer Welsh Orthopaedic Society (WOS), May 2017 to date
2. I conceived and Chair the local monthly National Hip Fracture Database
(NHFD) Taskforce at Hywel Dda in response to challenging annual report
figures. I have led improvement in live and retrospective data collection and
also improved collaboration between multidisciplinary team members.

3. I co-conceived and co-direct the weekly cross cover FY and CT speciality
teaching program as a response to a Deanery risk report.
Audit
Examples of recent audit activity include:
1. Audit of consent form documentation and introduction of procedure-specific
labels for trauma and orthopedics
Role: Conceived project and co-lead. Loop Closed
Aim & measure of the change: To improve to consent form documentation.
Legibility, adequacy of procedure specific complications monitored in two
loops of an audit cycle
Conclusions/Actions: Departmental education as well as introduction of
simple procedure-specific complication stickers has resulted in significant
improvements in practice
BMJ Quality Reports
2. Prevalence of fractures during of periods of snow and ice
Role: Audit Lead of Second Cycle. Loop closed.
Results presented Locally, Nationally and Internationally.
BMJ Open, Vol 6, Issue 9, 14th September 2016
Team Working
I was the 1st XV and Club rugby captain of St Bartholomew’s and the Royal
London Medical Colleges. This involved overseeing the merger of two old rival
rugby clubs as well as the day to day running of the club. This required
managing, motivating and rebuilding a brand new club from two historic rugby
clubs.

Outside Interests
Apart from family life with my wife and three very young daughters, aged three, one
and zero years, my interests are mainly sporting. I played rugby for Cardiff Under 21
as well as my medical college 1st XV for five years. I also played for Cardiff 1st XV on
one occasion. I have toured with various XV and VII rugby sides around the world. I
still try to keep fit.
Miscellaneous
I am currently the Treasurer of the Welsh Orthopaedic Society.
I have been a reviewer of the Bone and Joint Journal (BJJ) since 2014.
