QUESTION
With reference to the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland Program—
Will the Minister outline in 2019-20 and 2020-21 to date (reported separately) (a) the total number of applications lodged, (b) the total number of applications approved, (c) the total number of applications declined and (d) details of the successful events and projects delivered?
ANSWER
Multiculturalism is one of our state’s greatest strengths and we remain committed to fostering an inclusive, harmonious and united Queensland.
Under the 2019-20 Celebrating Multicultural Queensland (CMQ) program, the former Department of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs received a total of 251 applications for funding. Of that total, 152 applications were received under the Multicultural Events round for events to be delivered in the 2020 calendar year; and 99 applications were received under the Multicultural Projects round for projects to be delivered in the 2020-21 financial year.
Of the 152 applications under the 2019-20 Multicultural Events round, 117 applications were approved (Attachment 1), and 35 applications declined.
Considering the deep impacts of COVID-19, the 2019-20 Multicultural Projects funding round was suspended and its allocated budget of $300,000 was reallocated towards funding initiatives that supported community response and recovery activities.
This year, the CMQ Projects funding round is divided into two categories, with the new Youth and Community Connection Projects category aimed at funding projects that will help break down barriers young people face and increase their access to, and inclusion within, the community.
The second category, Economic and Social Participation Projects, is designed for projects that create pathways to participation in the economic, social and cultural life of Queensland for people of all ages from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Under the 2020-21 CMQ program, the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs received a total of 309 applications for funding. Of that total, 130 applications were received under the Multicultural Events round for events to be delivered in the 2021 calendar year; 76 applications were received under the Economic and Social Participation Projects round for projects to be delivered in the 2021-22 financial year; and 103 applications were received under the Youth and Community Connection Projects round for projects to be delivered from 1 July 2021 for up to two years.
75 applications under the Multicultural Events round were approved (Attachment 2) and 55 applications declined. Nine applications under the Economic and Social Participation Projects round were approved and 67 applications were declined or ineligible. Eight applications under the Youth and Community Connection Projects round were approved and 95 applications were declined or ineligible. Successful projects will commence from 1 July 2021.

Due to COVID-19, a significant number of organisations have either cancelled or postponed events that were scheduled in the 2020 and 2021 calendar years. The Queensland Government is continuing to support organisations to host these events under COVID-safe measures later in 2021 or in 2022.
